Should I use a temp buffer to gunzip bytes to bytes?

Folks,
I need a method to gunzip (uncompress) a zipped-byte-array into a plain-byte-array ... The below method (based on that used for file-i/o-streams) works, but I can't figure out if using the buf  "interveening temporary buffer" is good, bad, or indifferent.
As I understand things... There's really no memory saving in reading/writing-by-the-temporary-buffer because the input gzippedByteArray is allready wholey in memory, and we (by definition) need the whole output plain-byte-array in memory concurrently... so it'd probably be more memory efficient to NOT use temporary-buffer and just zip the WHOLE input straight into the ByteArrayOutputStream with one call to output.write
BUT I'm not really sure of myself here... so please can anyone offer an informed opinion?
Memory efficiency is important (I think) because we're handling XML responses, and "the odd one" might be upto maybe 200 Mb (unzipped), though "the norm" is under a meg, and 99% are under 5 meg... So I guess I need to engineer this instead of just slapping it in and seeing if it pops.
      * Returns the g-unzipped (uncompressed) version of the given
      * gzippedByteArray.
      * @param gzippedByteArray byte[] - the bytes to uncompress
      * @return byte[] - the uncompressed bytes
      * @throws IOException
     public static byte[] getUnzippedBytes(byte[] gzippedByteArray)
          throws IOException
          ByteArrayInputStream input = null;
          GZIPInputStream unzipper = null;
          ByteArrayOutputStream output = null;
          byte[] bytes = null;
          try {
               input = new ByteArrayInputStream(gzippedByteArray);
               unzipper = new GZIPInputStream(input);
               output = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
               // unzip bytes onto the output stream
               int len;
               byte[] buf = new byte[BUFFER_SIZE];
               while ( (len=unzipper.read(buf)) > 0 ) {
                    output.write(buf, 0, len);
               // return the contents
               bytes = output.toByteArray();
          } finally {
               IOException x = null;
               if(unzipper!=null) try{unzipper.close();}catch(IOException e){x = e;}
               if(output!=null) try{output.close();}catch(IOException e){x = e;}
               if(x!=null) throw x;
          return bytes;
     }Thanking you all. Keith.

OutputStreams aren't 'exposed by routers... Our bluddy router "encapsulates" the servlet request. It exposes a swag of setters, one of which is setExtractXml(byte[])... the upside is that you don't have to worry about content types, and request headers and all that carp... the downside is the loss of flexibility.
What I meant was that I'll need to customise the session model (which lives in our funky router) to expose the servlet-output-stream to the action class... Then we're laughing.
Or not... My mad tech manager reckons "it's been working that way for years"... he didn't like it when I reminded him of our "odd "unexplained" out of memory" incidents... Nope... His code... His way... Gotta luv the managment, and why do I care anyway... Do I care? Naaah. I just work here.

  • What setting should I use for Abbey Road drums?  Getting a cpu overload issue

    What setting should I use for Abbey Road drums (i.e. multi-output, stereo, etc)?  Getting a cpu overload issue.  I have a macbook pro, 4 gb ram, running Logic Pro 9.  Just 3 tracks of drums and a few real instrument tracks.  Can't find a guide in the manual for either Kontakt or Logic.  Thanks in advance!

    Hi
    AR drums are complete resource (CPU) hogs. They work better if you turn off as many of the AR internal plugins as you can.
    See section 4 (?) of the AR manual, which you can find within Kontakt (In the library area of Kontakt click hold the small "i" on the right of the "AR drummer" Library).
    Alternatively, your only solution is to increase the I/O buffer in Preferences:Audio, with the associated increase in latency

  • Best options to use in Temp Table

    Hello,
    I was just trying to figure out the best options we can choose with when we come across a scenario where we need to use a  Temp Table/Table Variable/Create
    a Temp Table on the fly.
    However, I could not see any big difference in using those options. As per my understanding using a table variable is more convenient if the query logic is
    small and the result set also will be comparatively small.Creating a temp table is also an easy option but it takes much time and we can not create any indexes on it. I am working on a query optimization task where in plenty of temp tables are used
    and the query takes more than five minutes to execute. We have created few indexes and all in few tables and reduced the query execution time up to 2 mnts.Can anyone give me more suggestions on it. I have gone through various articles about it and came to
    know that there is no one solution for this and I am aware of the basic criteria like  use Set No count on, Order the table in which the indexes are created, Do not use Select * instead use only columns which are really required, Create Indexes
    and all. Other than these I am stuck with the usage of temp tables. There are some limitations where I can convert all the Temp table logic to CTE (I am not saying its not possible, I really dont have time to spend for the conversion). Any suggestions are
    welcome.

    Actually, we want to avoid all of those things in a declarative/functional language. The goal is to write the solution in a single statement. What you are doing is mimicking a scratch tape in a 1950's tape file system.
    Another non-declarative technique is to use UDFs, to mimic 1950's procedural code or OO style methods. Your sample code is full of COBOL-isms! In RDBMS we follow ISO-11179 rules, so we have “<something in particular>_code” rather than just “code” like
    a field within a COBOL record. The hierarchical record structure provides context, but in RDBMS, data elements are global.  Or better, they are universal names.
    >> I am aware of the basic criteria like use SET NO COUNT ON, Order the table in which the indexes are created, Do not use SELECT * instead use only columns which are really required, CREATE INDEXes and all.<<
    All good, but you missed others. Never use the same name for a data element (scalars) and a table (sets). Think about what things like “ProductionResponse.production_response” means. A set with one element is a bit weird, but that is what you said. Also, what
    is this response? A code? A count? It lacks what we call an attribute property.
    This was one of the flaws we inherited when ANSI standardized SQL and we should have fixed it. Oh well, too late now.
    Never use NVARCHAR(MAX). Why do you need to put all of the Soto Zen sutras in Chinese Unicode? When you use over-sized data elements, you eventually get garbage data.

    Yes! This is how we do declarative/functional programming! Make the effort, so the optimizer can work, so you can use parallelism and so you can port your code out of T-SQL dialect.

  • Need experts opinion... Should I use smcFanControl?

    I've recently purchased a MacBook Pro 13" with an i7 processor and 8GB of RAM and have been watching flash player videos on the internet and playing pretty basic games that use programs such as Java and have experienced temps topping at 101 degrees Celsius. I'm not an expert with laptops, but I have done a TON and I mean HOURS of reading online for the past several days and have read posts where people have encouraged the use of smcFanControl when needed and read the opposite side where people say to not mess with it and trust in Apple's engineering. From my basic understanding, it seems like more acceptable temperatures should be around 80-90 degrees Celsius for these tasks. Am I correct in this thinking to protect my laptop? This is my 1st laptop and I want to make sure I can make it last as long as possible, so what's the truth? Should I use smcFanControl just when I plan to play games or watch flash player videos? If you've used smcFanControl for years, please speak up along with anyone else who knows a lot on this issue. Thanks!!

    </ATO>
    <FIX>
    <somefiled="Y" type=String value=50 />
    <FIX>
    </Message>
    Now first i have to parse this xml ..then my java program is going to accept value from user ..and depending on user specified value i've to use either ATO or FIX fields...e.g if user value is 35 then my program should use fields within ATO node.
    You will read the XML structure into some kind of memory model. When the user supplies a value you will search for a matching value (likely from a collection such as a map or list) and return the value in that object that you locate.
    what should be done for this ..
    See above.
    and what if i change values in my xml file..will i have to restart my application to load xml again ?
    If you change the file on the filesystem, you should simply be able to re-parse the XML file and update your in-memory model. If you instead update your in memory-model, you can serialize the model back to XML on the filesystem. Neither needs to necessarily have anything to do with application start-up (other than the fact that you would normally read in the XML model then, but updating is a separate concern, as would re-reading it).

  • How should i increase over all buffer hit ratio.....

    Hi all,
    As shown below if my DB2 databse buffer Qulaity is low .. How should i increase over all buffer hit ratio..
    Please advice on any sap standrd notes or procedures
    Number                                    1
    Total Size                           80,000  KB
    Physical Reads                         6.65  ms
    Physical Writes                        0.00  ms
    Overall Buffer Quality                86.05  %
    Data Hit Ratio                        85.79  %
    Index Hit Ratio                       87.50  %
    No Victim Buffers                259,079,295
    --rahul

    One of the options is to simply increase the bufferpool size using the following command
    db2 alter bufferpool immediate <bufferpool name> size <new bufferpool size>
    However, this will affect the hit ration for a particular bufferpool. If you have more than one bufferpool, you need to identify the bufferpool(s) with worst hit ratio. In the SAP DBA Cockpit, check using
    Performance -> Bufferpool
    The victim buffer information is only useful in case you use alternate page cleaning.
    Note that there are other options to fight bad bufferpool hit ratio - however, with your small bufferpool size (80MB) maybe increasing the size is the appropriate step.

  • What type of hard disk should I use if I want to use it on mac and windows?

    Hey Forum,
    I am using windows xp on my macbook (snow leopard). I came across some dealers who say that there are hard disks for mac only and for both mac and windows. So, I wanted to buy a hard disk so that I can use it both on mac and windows xp, so what type of hard disk should I use? Must I partition into 2?
    or are there any harddisk in the market which is compatible for both mac and windows xp without screwing up the format(NTFS/Mac OS X Journaled)? Pls look into this matter and help me with it.
    All of your replies and suggestions is much appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Once in a very long while Apple will have customized firmware on drives, and it is possible to find SCSI/SAS or drives that are destined to be used with high end storage controllers.
    But that is the exception that makes the rule.
    SATA is SATA. Though.... there are now SATA III drives that don't work in XP, or that need a jumper, and Seagate and some drives have managed to deliver firmware that has caused trouble... and Apple has had to issue firmware updates to help compatibility....

  • I feel I must move beyond iMovie, what program should I use ?

    I have been happily using iMovie and iDVD from versions 1 through 6.  iMovie 08 was so bad that Apple made iMovie 06 available as a free download for buyers of iMovie 08. The newer iMovies were better, but they seemed “dumbed down” (even for me).  Now, I am shocked and horrified to learn that the latest iMovie does not even set chapter markers!
    So, I have continued to use iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (they seem to work fine under OS 10.9.4).   iMovie 06 is now 8 years old!  I feel compelled to move forward. A lot of my work is DV.    In the past, most of my source material came out of S-Video.   I used a Canopus ADVC300 analog-to-digital converter that gave good results.   Going forward, I will have more video utilizing Component Video, or HDMI.
    I am looking into 2 possibilities,  Adobe Premiere elements 12, or.........Final Cut Pro X.
    The final result of my work is almost always a DVD.   It is hard for me to move from iMovie and iDVD.  I never read the manuals for either program, yet,  I was able to produce DVDs with nice menus and overall quality close to Hollywood.
    It looks like Final Cut Pro X 'can' make a DVD directly without other software.  However, from what I have seen on YouTube the result is primitive compared to what iDVD was doing 10 years ago.
    Adobe Premiere elements 12 can make nice DVDs and Blu-ray's directly.  I have no problem with using a separate program to make DVDs but I haven't got a clue how to do that with Final Cut Pro X.   I suppose I can still use iDVD, but now I'm back to using discontinued software.
    I do not need any of the high-powered affects capability that Final Cut Pro X  possesses.  My “movie-making” is mostly confined to simple editing (the old iMovie 06 did all I needed).
    Frankly, one motivation for choosing Final Cut Pro X, is the excellent, compassionate and understanding support that the kind people on this very forum provide.  So, what program should I use?

    to turn perspective for a second by 180°:
    Why do you want to switch to a new editor anyhow?
    • iM-a never did discs - that was iDVDs job = no big change in your workflow
    • iDVD is still working, and aside obsolete, complex and $$$$ DVDSP (part of obsolete FC/p) or Encore (part of Adobes CC rent package) your only option left to create disks on MacOS is indeed iDVD (...ok, there's Toast and Burn and some weird 'shareware'-stuff...)..
    • iMovie-b supports the new HDef formats (AVCHD) - you mentioned converters and DVDs = no HDef in use, in your habitat, correct?
    • if you don't need FCPX' bling-bling (I can't imagine that ) - why not using FCPX-lite = iMovie? 15$ ...
    • chapters could be done in iDVD - just to mention that ............
    • AP and FCPX are following very different concepts in usage - my personal preference is 200% on FCPX, … I was one of the loudest nay-sayers, when iM08 araised, meanwhile, FCPX is my dream!! AP (tested it) is way too complex, crowded, 'optionalized' and did I mention 'complex' for me. A bit like Windows vs. MacOS: 'everything goes' (incl. getting lost) vs. 'convenience' (incl. restrictions) ... After 2y of practice, I'm editing my weekly hobby-projects with 6-cam-Multicam, incl. tons of  custom graphics, slow-mow, effects (soccer games) in less than 2h ... awesome!
    summary:
    • why switching?
    • use iMovie10 + iDVD
    • Premiere (or Premiere Elements!) and FCPX are both avail as fee trial ... test  it - but you need iDVD anyhow
    • 'disks'  is a dwindling niché, for years!- consider to switch to 'other' distribution options
    ... what are 'chapters' anyhow??... (kid din'!)

  • Which C# Adobe library should I use to open a PDF in Acrobat Reader 9, 10, and 11?

    Hi, all.
    I have a Visual Studio C# application that writes an Adobe PDF using iText. Does anyone know how to programmatically open the PDF on client's computer and ensure it works for Adobe Reader 9, 10, and 11?
    -I have Adobe Reader XI on my machine and "Adobe Pdf Reader" is NOT showing up in my COM references. This is the library that I've heard people use for this.
    -The "Adobe Reader File Preview Type Library" is showing up there, but does not add to my project because of the following error message: "A reference to 'Adobe Reader File Preview Type Library' could not be added. Could not register the ActiveX type library....adoberfp.dll'." But I haven't persued this further becuase I'm not even convinced I should be using this library, which brings me to my next point:
    -Please don't tell me to go read the Adobe SDK spec. In searching for this answer, I found posts on here with people asking this question and getting not great answers, or half-*** answers to go read the Adobe SDK spec. I have the Adobe SDK spec, it's terrible. The example source code is laughably poor and reads like it was written by someone with bad english, with poor naming, commenting, and documentation, and there is no separate document that explains what the source code does. I think the reason people say this is because they haven't read it themselves and they don't know the answer and hope to deal with the question by handwaving. Sorry for the rant if you weren't going to do that!
    Thanks in advance, if anyone knows.
    -Brandon

    It will be from a client-side application, and I will be reviewing this further and get back on it. At this time my assembly isn't the correct type of 32-bit, which may be a deal-breaker. But downgrading it to 32-bit, I wasn't able to find or include the appropriate library for AXAcroPDF.
    Just a word about my trying to read the SDK documentation. The documentation folder has 5 items, a folder called "Javascript", an html file caled "Acrobat_11_SDK_Help_Shortcut.html", a zip file called "...HTMLHelp.zip," pdf_reference.pdf, and U3DElements.pdf. I've never heard of U3DElements, so surely that isn't meant for me. The pdf_reference.pdf, when opened, has three PDF links to two supplements to ISO 32000-1 and a document titled Document management. These describe the PDF spec, so that's not for me. So I must have to use the HTML documentation shortcut. I open it, and my browser says the redirect URL can't be found. Ah, may be that stuff in the ZIP file it's referencing. After unzipping it, you have to move the file around so that it actually references the right index.html inside the unzipped folders, and then even after this it loads up as two blank frames in my browser. I will look into why the links are all dead, but holy lord, this is just not very helpful at all.
    Thanks for your help, Test Screen Name.

    Yes, otherwise you will have to pay for those apps again. If an app is purchased by one Apple ID, he/she will be able to redownload it again for no cost (note: this does apply to songs, but NOT to movies).

    i had bought a ipad, should i use the same Apple ID as per my iphone? or create a new one. if i use the same ID, howabout my i cloud storage will be remain 5GB or 10GB

    One possible use for separate Apple IDs is to have a separate ID associated with a particular device.  This could be important with iMessage or Facetime, because if you associate all your devices with one ID, you will receive iMessages or Facetime calls on all your devices simultaneously.  If you only want to do iMessage on your iPhone, for example, people could use the Apple ID associated with your iPhone, and the messages would not show up on your iPad.  Obviously, this could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you like to work.
    For me, I have a single Apple ID, mainly because it is easier to keep track of my purchases and downloads.  I also prefer to receive messages and facetime calls on all my devices, so I can choose which one to respond from.
