Should I use a VGA or DVI connector?

I have recently bought a Samsung 22" LCD SyncMaster 2232BW to add as a second display to my macbook.
I have the choice to hook it up through the VGA or DVI connector. At present im using the apple mini DVI to VGA connector and the quality looks good. I was wondering if I were to swap it over to DVI whether or not I would see an marked improvement.
I would like to know the pro's and cons of both VGA and DVI and whether it's worth swapping my apple VGA connector for the apple mini DVI to DVI and using the DVI cables also supplied with the monitor.

I just replaced my 19 inch dead lcd with a 22-inch Westinghouse L2210NW. ok, not the most recognizable name in the industry, but specs are good, and price at Best Buy ($229.), I couldn't resist. I am using the Mac DVI ->VGA adapter/connector. A few reviews I have read about this monitor stated changing to DVI even more impressionable-I can't hardly imagine. SO: Please advise or confirm: I need only replace the cable/vga came with the monitor: out the box it readily plugs into the white adapter at the back of my Mac Mini. So my new DVI cable should plug directly into my Mac, not needing the converter? Can you give me a ball-park figure on what this new cable should cost. And finally, it is worth it?

I've just purchased a NEC 232WMI display. This is a 23" display with 1980 by 1020 resolutions, and has displayport, DVI and VGA inputs, as well as USB and audio. It supports Displayport v1.1a.
I've got a 2006 MacBook with mini-DVI output, and a mid 2009 MacBook pro with mini-displayport out.
The display came with a DVI cable. I've ordered a mini-DVI to DVI adapter for my macbook - the question is do I order a mini-Displayport to Displayport cable (or do I need an adapter and cable), or do I order a mini-displayport to DVI adapter to connect the MacBook Pro?
Will there be any difference in image quality / use of other cables etc?
Any suggestions as to what to do and why would be appreciated!

Diffferences are not remarkable but DVI is indeed better. I wuold then choose DVI.

Mini DVI to DVI connector not right for my PC disply with 15pin input.

Since you say it's a 15pin connector, it sounds like you need the Mini-DVI to VGA.

HP Pro 3130 MT Windows 7 How to use onboard VGA

There's got to be a simple solution to this. Our company recently took over another office and acquired several used PC's from them. Three of them are HP Pro 3130 MT workstations with Windows 7. These units have a built in VGA port and a DVI port. In addition they all have a separate video card installed, the HP 584217-001 ATI Radeon 4550.
I need these PC's to talk to "normal" VGA monitors, but since the onboard VGA will not work I presumed this was due to the ATI Radeon being installed and overriding the onboard VGA adapter. So, I removed the ATI Radeon card. Now the PC just beeps when it is booted. Still no VGA output. The HP 584217-001 also has a cable that converts it into two VGA ports. No luck when using this cable to connect with a VGA monitor, either.
How do I re-enable the onboard VGA adapter? I cannot see the BIOS as the display (VGA) will not work, so I can't make any BIOS setting changes. At this location there are no DVI capable monitors so I haven't tested whether or not the onboard DVI adapter is working.

Please take note of the specific processor which is included with your HP Pro 3130 MT.
HP Pro 3130 MT motherboards with specific processors do not have any onboard (integrated) graphics, although they still have the VGA and DVI connectors. This means that although you may remove the PCIe Graphics Card, you will not be able to be able to use a monitor with the onboard VGA or DVI (because there is no integrated graphics). This also means that you will not be able change your bios to onboard graphics (because there is no integrated graphics).

VGA to DVI ??

Just bought a brand new Apple Cinema Display 20".
I have a G4 Quickslilver and it doesn't have a DVI port.
Will the monitor work with a cheap VGA to DVI connector.
Apple support told me it wouldn't then told me it will. Everywhere else I look there doesn't seem to be any clear answers.

Can I use a VGA/DVI-D monitor to a new 2014 Mac Mini?

My wife's PC just died (it was a cheap 300 pc that lasted probably 5 years.
She basically emails, web surfs, looks at pictures and plays candy crush on Facebook so she doesn't need anything too high end.
I was thinking of getting her the basic 2014 mac mini but I have a VGA/DVI-D monitor (an older Dell) and it fits perfectly on her desk.
Can I somehow hook up a new mac mini to either the DVI-D or VGA input?
If not, what is the best monitor to get HDMI or should I look into a thunderbolt monitor?

Yes. You will have to purchase one of the following adopter:
- HDMI to DVI and use the Minis HDMI output
- Mini displayport to DVI adopter and use one of the Minis Thunderbolt ports
- Mini displayport to VGA adopter and use one of the Minis Thunderbolt ports

Using 23" Cinema Display and VGA to DVI adapter??

I have 4 computers (2 deskop PCs, 1 IBM thinkpad laptop and 1 MAC). I have a DVI switcher. 3 of my PCs work great. My IBM thinkpad (T23) has an old style DVI connector on it that I cannot use (I thought I could until I got the Apple Monitor). I have tried a passive (no power) VGA to DVI adapter...but the monitor just ignores the signal. Do I need to purchase a $299 powered VGA to DVI adapter? I was thinking of looking for a PCMCIA (PC Card) video card with DVI out for my laptop, but havn't found anything when searching via google. Any information would be helpful. Thank you!

The VGA to DVI adapter sounds like it's just an adapter that re-routes the pins to make the cables connect. The DVI connector can carry both analog and digital signals, so all the adapter would do is make a VGA cable with its analog signal go into a DVI cable that still carries the same analog signal. If that's the case, it won't work with the Apple display since the Apple display doesn't accept an analog VGA input even if you get the cables and adapters to hook it up. So yes, you would need the expensive VGA to DVI "converter" rather than just an "adapter".

Don't setup an XServe with a DVI monitor if you intend to use a VGA monitor

Hi Forum Folks.
A bit of a "gotcha" to warn others about, with XServes, and VGA vs DVI monitors.
We Recently re-setup (erase + install a fresh OS) on a 2008 XServe Xeon, with a DVI (Digital) monitor connected. All worked fine, and we went to move the server into the production environment.
However, when we moved + plugged the XServe into it's new home (a rack), it would not boot (flashing question mark).
Moving the Xserve out of the rack, and back to it's work-bench setup, made it work again.
We traced the problem to the monitor we used... If we hooked up a digital (DVI) monitor, the XServe worked fine (with the mini DVI to DVI connector). If we hooked up a VGA monitor (with a mini DVI to VGA connector) that's when the XServe wouldn't boot. We tried a variety of common techniques to solve the problem, including resetting various settings, re-installing Mac OS X 10.5.6 Server over the top etc.
The solution:
(Although I'm sure there are simpler solutions):
We setup the server again (from scratch) using the VGA monitor combination from the very start of the setup, and all worked fine (on VGA or DVI monitors). The server is happily in production now, with it's VGA output.
So the lesson here: Always set up your XServe using a VGA-based monitor in the first instance.

I don't think I've ever used a monitor when setting up a server - maybe used a KVM if I've re-installed or upgraded the OS, but for the main part every install I do is run remotely.
Still it's good to know, especially since it defies logic.

What type of vga cord should i use?

I just purchased a mac mini and it is on its way. I have a 22'' memorex lcd tv and it has a VGA plug in. What type of vga cord should i use? Theres male to male and theres male to female. Which cord should i use and does any1 know a site i can order it off of?

these cables would allow you to hook up the monitor without using the adapter... would just save a little bit of space if depth is at all an issue, or the visibility of the cable sticking out that far back.

Mac Mini: shall I use VGA or DVI?

I'm hopefully getting a new Mac Mini next week. My question is basically should I use DVI to VGA on my Samsung 32" LCD, or use DVI to DVI?
I can't use the HDMI port as it's being used by my Sky HD box (unless I can get a splitter??).

I would agree with Boece's thoughts. DVI is the better quality display option. Being digital it doesn't go through the process of converting the video stream to analog, only to have to convert it back to digital in the display. As a result, DVI generally gives a more crisp image quality with better color density and saturation and better contrast and brightness. However, VGA is far more universal, and while image quality is not as good in theory, often it works better in practice - particularly with TVs.
The problem with using a TV as display for a computer is that as yet it's early days for such things, and TV manufacturers are often not quite on the ball in terms of ensuring their products are entirely compatible. Thus even though yours has both DVI and VGA inputs, you might find that the output is better, or the screen more usable with VGA than DVI.
hence the advice to experiment - trying DVI first so see if you can get a good image that fills the screen. If so, stick with that. If not, go to VGA and see if that works better.

That adapter is for connecting a VGA display to a computer's DVI-I port. A DVI-I port has both digital and analog video pins. The adapter passes just the analog video to a VGA connector. It will not work in the reverse direction because a VGA computer does not provide digital video.
There are VGA to DVI converters that will connect a DVI display to a VGA computer.

Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
Some people shoot short movies with a digital stills camera, like a Sony Cybershot. (..These cameras can record a short movie onto a chip in the camera..)
You can connect these cameras to your Mac with a USB cable, and then manually copy a movie to your Mac, or the latest version of iPhoto should automatically copy movies from a stills camera, too.
These movies (..avi movies or .mpg movies..) may play OK using QuickTime player, but may not be playable - or editable - in iMovie, unless you convert them to a suitable system for iMovie, using a program like MPEG Streamclip.
Some proper video camcorders are not quite compatible with iMovie ..things like the 'Everio' camcorders which record onto an internal hard disc, or like camcorders which record onto a small internal DVD. Video from these will also need to be converted with 'Streamclip' or 'Handbrake'. The same applies to video recorded onto "microMV" tapes.
As Scalzmoney says, iMovie works just with "miniDV" and "Digital-8" tapes, and those camcorders need to be connected to a Mac, and iMovie, using a 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire cable, also called a DV cable or an "i.Link" cable.

Vga-dvi connector

Just installed a new graphics card that has a DVI port and a VGA port. I need to get two DVI Apple monitors into the computer. Can somebody point me to the correct adapter? I looked at some adapters on Newegg and some people were having problems with them - something about the discrepancy between DVI-A and DVI-D or something. Doesn't seem like it should be that difficult.

I'm sorry but VGA to DVI is actually quite a trick.
VGA is Analog and DVI is Digital.
It would be cheaper to get a different Graphics card than the adapter you are asking about.
