Should I use it as a 40gb external hard drive? Is it done?

Well, I have a 40gb Ipod classic 4th gen
that displayed the folder icon.
I performed a HDD scan and it passed, set it to discmode and itunes recognized it and begins the restore. This is where the problem occurs.
It says that i have to unplug the ipod and plug it in a power supply to complete the restore but my ipod still says do not disconnect. I found that I could get it to say "ok to disconnect" when i ejected the mounted ipod hdd or slightly loosed the usb chord.
After that, i remove the plug and plug it back in and itunes says it has detected an ipod in restore mode and restores it again! then it says to disconnect, and the cycle goes on forever.
I changed the drive letter to one i know is not in use...the letter 'y'.
I reformatted my hard drive and tried again but noting new happens!
i'd appreciate any help

oh and when i plug it in an external power supply after it tells me to, the ipod just says ok to disconnect

Apple has specific instructions on moving libraries.
    eg itunes.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
    You simply follow those instructions..
TC is a network drive.. nothing more.
To move individual files, just copy and paste to a new directory.. not inside a TM sparsebundle please.
BUT.. TC only worries me.. deeply.
It is relatively easy to corrupt a library when you copy to it.. library as a whole is then corrupted and will need to be restored from backup.. wops.. no backup. You are putting at risk all your files.. don't do it.. make sure you backup..
And here is the rub.. TC cannot back itself up.. TM cannot backup network drives.
And where are you going to backup.. to... an external drive on the computer.. in that case, that is where the library should be and the TC used as normal.. ie backup target for TM.
Please read Pondini on how to do it properly though.

  • Can the MacBook Air be backed up using Clone softward and an external hard drive?

I want to find the best way for a new college student to back up her MacBook Air files.  Can she use cloning software and an external hard drive?  I'm unclear if the Air supports attaching an external hard drive.

The computer should be cloned using Disk Utility, so no additional software is required. However, it's preferable to incrementally update the clone using backup software. I would recommend using one of the following. They each have different capabilities and features. Each can be used for a free trial period. My personal preference is Carbon Copy Cloner. All of them can make and maintain bootable clones.
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
An excellent source of external drives is OWC.

Format the external drive for your PC. Connect it to her computer after that but do not format it. It will appear on her desktop if you have selected that in preferences. Use Finder and drag the files you want to copy from her computer to the icon for the external drive.

  • "Time Machine" Backup Using Western Digital 160 GB External Hard Drive

I'm trying to use "Time Machine" to backup to a Western Digital Passport 160GB USB 2 external hard drive. The message that I continuously get after starting "Time Machine" is "Preparing...." and the backup process never begins. I've ejected the drive and plugged it back in. The drive is good, as I've been able to drag and drop files on the external drive icon, which is on my desktop. Has anyone else had a problem using a WD USB 2 external hard drive in conjunction with "Time Machine?" Thanks in advance for any insight into this problem!

  • Using an iPod with an external hard drive

Is it possible to use an ipod (ie update podcast and songs) in itunes without having to transfer the entire contents onto my mac book pro, and just use an external hard drive?

I don't think there is, because when you download podcasts, music, etc. it goes into you iTunes media folder. So I think the only way to get it on your external hard drive is to transfer. I might be wrong though.

  • Can you use your iPod as an external hard drive?

Sorry if this has been posted before . . .
I have a 160GB iPod and like with most people, my iPod is larger than my laptop and subsequently I am running out of free space on my laptop due to all the movies and music.
I’m not so worried about the music, but I would like to remove the burnt movies from my laptop, but leave them on my iPod. Is there any way of using the iPod like an external hard drive? If I delete the movies from my laptop – the iPod tries to Sync and I lose everything?
    Thanks in advance,

    Thanks Chris,
When I use iTunes through the normal sync window
    Devices > Ipod > movies
and select ‘Sync - selected movies’ and tick the ones to sync it removes the un-ticked items from my iPod. If I tick all of them and sync (and the movie has been removed from my hard-drive) it brings up an error message saying ‘the movie or data file cannot be found’.
I would be happy to use iTunes to store the movies, but I think I am missing a step.
    Appreciate the help,

  • HT1229 what is the best method for using a iphoto with an external hard drive for greater capacity?

what is the best method for using a iphoto with an external hard drive for greater capacity?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?
When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups.  It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up.  Instead, it took 30 minutes.  That can't be right.  I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that.  Please help.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

Plug your iPhone 5 into your Leopard Machine.
    Fire up iPhoto.
The phone should become available in iPhoto, and then you can import the camera roll.

I would like to freeze saving to icloud and perhaps transfer some of that data to my own external hard drive.  I don't want to lose anything already stored there, but don't want to purchase anymore cloud space.  How do i accomplish this?

It seems that saving to iCloud is a default.  My Pages documents automatically save there unless I change to save to destination.  I probably just need help in setting up the cloud.  When I tried to change the setting, though, it told me that if I made the change, all data on icloud would be eliminated and i don't want that.  I would ideally like to save everything on my external HD and not bother with iCloud.  Certainly don't want to buy more storage space.  Thanks for replying so promptly.

  • I want to use AirPlay and share an external hard drive, which AirPort should I use?

I am looking into buying an AirPort. I want to be able to share an external hard drive over it and use the AirPlay feature (by plugging in my speakers through an audio jack). It seems that the hard drive feature is only available on the extreme and the AirPlay feature is only available on the express. Are there any ways around this, and does anyone have suggestions on which AirPort to buy to achieve this?

If you import from iPhoto into Elements Organizer, the files will be copied to your hard disk and all the organization done in iPhoto09 will be carried forward to Organizer catalog. This can be done if you have enough space on your hard disk. However if you want to use Organizer solely + not create duplicate copies of your images, you can import photos directly from the Hard Disk. Ensure to write all metadata to files within iPhoto so that when the same photos are imported into Organizer, the tagging done is brought along.
    Thanks

  • Is it possible to use Time Machine with an external hard drive for two separate computers?

I'm looking to purchase an external hard drive to use as with time machine as a backup for two separate computers.  I'm not sure if I should buy 2 EHDs and dedicate one to each computer, or if Time Machine has the capacity to back up both computers separately.  Anyone have any experience with this?
    Thanks!

You can make two partitions on a single drive and dedicate one to each computer.
The pic is of a single external usb drive with three partitions( a Time Machine and two image backups) for two computers

  • Using a library in an external hard drive

Hi! I've got an iMac an a PC; and I want to use my iTunes Library (it's in an external hard drive) with both OS X and Win 7 without copying it in the hard drives. How can I do? I've tried to select the iTunes Media folder in WIndows, but the library (from a Mac) has an iTunes Music library... iTunes in Windows won't recognize the music in the library, but in OS X it works...

The folder on your internal drive, as viewed in LR, should read zero photos.
The new folder on your external drive, as viewed in LR, should contain the proper number of photos.
I don't know why the internal drive doesn't have extra space now
