Should i use progressive scan?

New to DVcam work, got a sony pd150 and filming an award ceremony.
Usually shoot in 16:9 but this doesn't work if you shoot progressive mode
I understand progressive gives better quality, but at the expense of lower frame rate, but this doesn't really bother me as its a static camera pointed at a stage
should i use progressive scan and 'scale up' to fill a 16:89 frame, or am i better off shooting interlaced at 16:9?

Ok, thanks.
Most of the footage will end on youtube but they want a dvd doing too.
It's static camera stuff, awards night, high contrast, dark room, spotlit stage.
Should I consider shooting this project in 4:3? Is progressive scan that much of an improvement?
Your FCE book rocks btw.

  • What should I use to scan for Trojans or Keyloggers?

I've heard conflicting conversations about not using anti-virus or that OS X has built in protection, but I wanted to know what the best way to check for Trojans or Keyloggers is so I can give my computer a looking-over before backing it up.
    I'm using OS X 10.6.8

Conversations?  There have been a few of those.
I'm not aware of a tool that's particularly reliable about detecting malware, nor one that might (for instance) catch hardware keyloggers.
The usual questions around your situation apply; I don't know how you use the system, nor what exposures or risks you might have or might face.  For instance, how sensitive is your information, who has had access, and what are the circumstances associated with the access, and what's been loaded onto the system?
If you're incautious or blasé about your computing practices and fond of downloading from torrents or acquiring cracked software or downloads from sketchy sites, then the anti-malwaretools generally won't save you.
In general: just back it up, back it up regularly, and keep various copies of the backups offline or remote, or both.  Backups and caution are among the best available anti-malware tools.
If you're fond of installing random stuff and particularly of entering your administrative password when prompted — that password is the proverbial keys to the security kingdom, to your address book, etc — or if your login passwords have been compromised (or have kids around that install all sorts of Free Stuff! and Free Games!), then change all your passwords, and install Little Snitch or equivalent, or implement and use network perimeter monitoring.  These monitoring tools catch (unexpected) outbound network connections, such as that Facebook watering hole attack.
Better still: upgrade to 10.7 or 10.8 as your hardware permits, as 10.6 is rather old and lacking some of the newer capabilities here, such as Gatekeeper.  Disable the Java web start plug-in to disable Java (and don't install Java after you upgrade to 10.7 or 10.8), and remove Adobe Flash Player, and disable the "open safe attachments" setting.  And if you're (necessarily, or otherwise) paranoid, install Little Snitch or network perimeter monitoring.
If you feel obligated to use a malware scanner (the hit rates on the malware-scanning tools are far from great, and the implementations of most aren't that much different from the malware itself in terms of how the scanning software can insinuate itself into the system and can sometimes then trigger issues with stability and operations), then ClamAV is the usual recommendation around the forums.  OS X Server includes that, and there are various discussions around getting ClamAV going on OS X client.
Once your operating system software has been compromised, the usual path is a wipe and reinstall, or a wipe and install of a backup prior to the breach, followed by steps to prevent a reoccurance.  Decontamination of a system is difficult, at best.  If your hardware has been compromised, you're in deep sneakers.
If you want to be or need to be paranoid due to the information involved or folks that have had unfettered access to your system hardware, then check for dongles or other unexpected external devices, and start replacing your equipment. The "better grade" keyloggers can be stored in USB devices, and can be mounted within your hardware.  The better-grade gear can be difficult to locate, short of disassembly.  Also check your local network, as it's feasible to monitor traffic there, whether within a modem, or within a device added to your network.
Again, how paranoid you wanr or need be here depends highly on what you've been up to, and who might be after you, and a whole host of other details...

  • Progressive scanning and Field Dominence questions

Beginning questions. I will be making simple video movies mostly for viewing on Macbook Pro, maybe on TV, but unlikely.
I have some settings questions. I will shoot with miniDV Sony DCR-VX2100, 16 bit, 48 khz, NTSC.
The camera has a setting: Progressive On/Off (normal). The (rather confusing) manual suggests Progressive for more stable stills, otherwise use normal for moving images.
Should I use Progressive Off? And what setting for Field Dominance, in FCE?
Hope that I have provided enough info.
    Thanks,
    Sonny

Should I use Progressive Off? And what setting for Field Dominance, in FCE?
For regular shooting I'd leave it off. A fast shutter and good lighting will give pretty good stills in off mode.
If you need (rarely) rock solid stills then switch it on if you like.
Lower field dominance for DV. When you select the correct Easy Setup in FCE all the leg work is done.
You should use Easy Setup>DV-NTSC. Set this and Save before capturing to your Sequence.

  • Jittery Slo Mo: Deinterlace and Progressive Scan

Alrighty, I just finished a wedding video and the parts where I created slow motion are really jittery. The cameras I am using are 1080i. So, I've found that I should have deinterlaced. My first question is, since I've already edited everything is it ok to just right click each clip and set them to "always deinterlace" just the clip that I've cut? For example, the clip titled 107009 is about an hour long, but I've cut it up and the part of it where there is slo motion is only peice of that long clip.
My next question is, provided it's ok to just "always deinterlace" one part of a clip, do I render the whole project as "progressive scan"? I like starting off with rendering out as MPEG2-DVD and select the preset Match Source Attributes (highest quality) . But, in my mind, it seems weird to have a deinterlaced clip mixed in with interlaced clips. So, do I fix that by then changing the "Field Order" to "None: Progressive"?
Also, could I simply do just one of these things instead of both? Like, just change the field order to progressive scan instead of selecting each clip to always deinterlace?
    Thanks!

Thanks, but everything about "match source attributes" in the preset, not the check box above to the left of the preset, has been producing awesome results. This is just when I export out of premiere. Then in Encore it's transcoded I suppose to make it work on DVD, right? What's wrong with match source, what is the alternative?
I suppose "You can select Always Deinterlace for the slomo's" means I only need to select those particular clips that I've cut? Can you elaborate so I feel like I understand more what's happening. Does that result in a DVD with mixed results and effect anything?
And, as an alternative to just selecting the clips and always deinterlacing, can i simply just change the whole thing to no fields, will that fix all the slo motion clips without making them always deinterlace individually?

  • Reposting this - bringing dvd footage into FCP - progressive scan

I occasionally have clients that need me to bring footage into their projects from a dvd or vhs. I'm looking into getting something that can do both NTSC & PAL and I've come across this product:
    Sharp DV-NC80
    6-Head Hi-Fi Stereo VHS/S-VHS VCR & DVD, CD-R, V-CD Combo Player - Multi System, Multi Zone
My only dilemma is that the dvd player does not have progressive scan. Can anyone let me know if that should matter or not and what progressive scan is for? (I read the jagged edge article, but does progressive scan affect how FCP digitizes dvd material as well?) Thank you.

Unless you are bringing the material in via a capture card, you can't take advantage of the 480p scanrate anyway...

  • What sequence setting should I use for a High Quality Video Montage?

I am about to start a new project for a client using photographs only.  I have two questions:
    1.  What should I use for the sequence settings?  Should I edit with a HD sequence setting?
    2.  I am going to scan the pics myself.  What Pixel or resolution is appropriate to get the best quality?  I'm looking for wide screen 16 x 9, not 3 x 4.

First, decde how you are going to deliver this production to your client. Then tell us what that delivery medium will be. Then we'll have some advice for you.
See the section in the FCP manual on using still images. You need to understand that in video there are only pixels, no dots per inch or lines per inch. Those terms are meaningless in video. You wil sand at a size in raw pixels that is only slightly larger than your delivery format.

  • Progressive Scan: MacBook to TV FullHD. Help

    Good night.
I have several questions about connecting my MacBook on my TV.
    Gears:
    - MacBook completely updated, using the Snow Leopard 10.6.1
    - LG Scarlet LCD TV 42" FULL HD (1080p)
I will buy a MiniDVI to HDMI adapter and plug it in my Scarlet.
I have downloaded from Apple Movie Trailers videos:
    - New Moon HD 1080p
    - New Moon HD 720p
    - Dark Knight 1080p
    - Transformers 2 1080p
I ran the videos on the Mac itself and not getting the Progressive Scan effect that were described in
    videos.
    (1) - Is the MacBook Display Progressive Scan?
    (2) - When I connect my MacBook on TV I see the videos running on the Progressive Scan resolution 1920 x 1080 (1080p)?
    Thank you for your attention.

what exactly is your issue? any modern computer display (macbook too) & output (DVI or VGA) will be progressive scan, that's why interlaced video has a bunch of vertical lines in it, or the edges of subjects / objects in said video have "mice teeth" around them when played back on a Mac / PC.
The Mini DVI to S-video / composite video adapter does work with interlaced sets. I'm not sure if the adapter is producing interlaced or if it's the tv converting on the fly... I think it's the adapter...

  • Progressive Scan mode (DVD on Sharp Aquos LCD)

I want to use the Mac Mini as a DVD player on my 32" Sharp Aquos. Does anyone know if the Mac Mini supports progressive scan mode?
Also, has anyone run into issues connecting to the 32" Sharp Aquos LCD TV?
    Thanks
    Curt

Along the lines of progressive scan vs. interlaced... I've noticed while playing video from Quicktime I can make a selection to pick which one I prefer. I've got a project that I created in iMovie and I notice that if I were to share (export) a clip using the expert settings I can chose whether it is interlaced or progressive. However, when accessing those same .mov files in iDVD I don't see any settings that indicate whether the final DVD will be interlaced or progressive. From the looks of the footage viewing it on my computer it looks like it is interlaced. How can I create a DVD with this iMovie footage that ends up displaying as progressive?
    thanks for any advice.

The line to the far right that you use to scan down is missing.  How do I put it back on the screen.

the scroll bars in 10.7 and later are optional, and do not appear unless you specify they should always be present. It is a checkbox in System Preferences.

  • What File Extension Should I Use

I'm new to websites.  I have been adding documents to our organizations website (thesoba.com).  Usually I will use pdf documents, but one of the documents (points) is taking a long time to load. That document keeps getting bigger and bigger each month.  I think that it's loading about 18 pages.   I know I have a lot of files on the website that I don't use and need to clean those up.  We have sponsor logo's and past history that we want to keep and possibly use in future years.  I need to those to a backup or another folder.  What is the best way to know what files are currently in use on the website.
    Thanks

The files are usually pdf which I have scanned.  I probably did not optimize for the web.  I do have Acrobat pro so I can do just about anything with these files.  Some of these files come from our bowling program.  I'm new to this so should I use another file type to post on the web.
First off ignore that other guy.  Looks to be a new spam bot.  They appear every so often on forums.
More than likely if they are just from a scanner they are not optimized.  I'm not sure if PDF is right or wrong.  Best way to tell is to look at the type of data you are trying to store.  If you show me one of the PDFs I would be willing to look at it for you and see whether it is something with optimization or if there is a better way to store the data.  If you are worried about publicly posting one of the documents, we could work through email (I would provide address through that).

  • Need help with easy setup - shot in progressive scan 29.98

i decided to shot this evening in progress scan on my sony vx2100.... i have two clients that are asking for progressive scan... i've had no luck capturing the video.... not sure of the setup settings
    thanks

you right... i learned last night it is 29.98 but i also got this response from my fcp users group.
If I understand your problem correctly, you can get the footage into FCP, but it looks like ****.
That's what happens when you use "progressive" mode on a VX2100 or a PD150. It's not really a true progressive image, and was never intended for professional production use. (I have no idea what it was intended for, frankly, other than a selling point -- i.e., to claim it does "progressive" when it actually doesn't.)
which isn't good news if it's true...

  • Using two scan progressive cameras with 1409?

I need to use two scan progressive cameras with the 1409. The two cameras are two sony XC-55 (30Hz). I have configured one as a Master and the other as Slave. I have connected the HD and VD of each camera between them.
I acquire a sequence of frames (normally I take five)of each camera every time that a triggeg ocurrs. Time to time I get some frames in the slave camera that the first line of the frame is not at the top. Not always in the same position. Sometimes I don't received the last or the two last frames.
In the past I used the same configuration with the 1408 and 1408 always tooks correctly all the frames from the two cameras.
    Please, help me?
    Thanks, in advance

I think the board isn't reading correctly the frames. I have some systems installed with the 1408 and they work correctly. I will send you some frames which show the problem and the vi that I use to capture them. The .icd file that I use with the 1409 is 30 Hz progressive and the .icd file that I use with the 1408 is scan area.
It is possible that I can solve the problem changing the parameters of the icd file? Do you have information about them?
