Should I use Sub-Equipment Hierarchy for sub-systems (first post)?

I am 2 months into the maintenance manager role for a fleet of Locomotives and it has been decided to use SAP PM by senior management based on a separate business arm requirements.
I believe for this to be successful the first step is to get the structure right so that data is collected in the most logical manner.
I intend to use SAP to schedule all maintenance tasks based on measuring points and dates of previous work orders, capture system and sub-system failure history, capture costs and parts usage and trend performance of subsystems based on their own and system level measuring points.
I have been told that all locomotives are assigned to a single functional location within the business model. The individual locomotives themselves are assigned as separate pieces of equipment in this functional location.
Within the individual locomotives there are a series of subsystems that have associated maintenance requirements based on time and usage and they are serial number tracked. These items are exchanged between the locomotives and the warehouse upon failure, upgrade or overhaul and include:
AC traction Motors
Wheelsets
Diesel Engine
Main Generator
Auxiliary Generator
Dynostarter
Gearbox
Compressors
Traction motor blowers (Fans)
Radiator fans and AC radiator fan motors
Is it logical to put these as sub-equipment within an Equipment Hierarchy with the Locomotive being the superior equipment?
Should notifications regarding their failure be assigned to the Superior Equipment (Locomotive) or the Sub-Equipment and what are the implications of each? If assigned to sub-systems can I still report on system reliability by "rolling up" the failures?
Do the measuring points (e.g. kilometres) assigned to the Superior Equipment (Locomotive) accumulate to the Sub-Equipment automatically and does installation and removal from different Locomotives with different kilometres affect this? For example a traction motor in Locomotive 001 is installed from 100,000 to 360,000 locomotive kilometres and then it is installed in Locomotive 002 from 300,000 to the current 340,000 locomotive kilometres. Does SAP accumulate 300,000 kilometres of life to the traction motor sub system based on its superior equipment's measuring points?
I have many more questions to come that I will most likely solve through experimentation and future questions, but in order to hit the ground running I would appreciate your feedback if any of you have similar experiences.

In SAP, you can define "N" no. of hierarchies for Functional Location & Equipment.
But in the reporting, you can get the costs at Functional Location level & Equipment level at next. Its not possible to have Sub Functional Location level or Sub Equipment Level.
Also, you have mentioned that you will interchange the Sub components between Locomotives. Also, you want to maintain those using Serial Numbers. You can define these Sub Components as Assemblies with Serial Numbers so that Equipment can be created for those combinations.
To maintain Measuring Point for Sub Components, Equipment should be created. In SAP, you have the option to transfer the Measuring Points from One Equipment (Superior Equipment) to another Equipment (Sub Equipment).
While interchanging the Sub Component from One Locomotive to another Locomotive, without Measurement Reading Transfer, you can dismantle & install the same.

One possible use for separate Apple IDs is to have a separate ID associated with a particular device. This could be important with iMessage or Facetime, because if you associate all your devices with one ID, you will receive iMessages or Facetime calls on all your devices simultaneously. If you only want to do iMessage on your iPhone, for example, people could use the Apple ID associated with your iPhone, and the messages would not show up on your iPad. Should i use a separate HDD for Logic?

I've read some info that using a separate drive for Logic improves performance, so it is an option I am thinking of taking. BUT does having an external drive connected via firewire800 actually outperform the internal drive (performing all tasks) connected by SATAII?
Should I keep Logic Pro and all it's loops etc on the main/os drive with just the projects on an external one?
or, install Logic on the external drive?
Also, I'm wondering if my 2008 2.4GHz 20' iMac can have 2 internal drives installed, possibly small SSDs?

Hi,
it is most convenient to have an external 7.200 RPM firewire 800 drive for recording audio (or even better a second internal within a Mac Pro ), while keeping Logic installed on the System drive (you won't be able to install Logic elsewhere, anyhow). You could, however, install some of Logic's additional content on an external drive if HD space is an issue, but that has nothing to do with recording performance.
For heavy audio recording, keep the drive you want to record to a dedicated drive.
SSD is nice, but expensive. Think twice if you really, really need it.

We have some DML performance issue on cf contention over the tables that also include LOB segments. In this case, should we define LOGGING on tables, lob segments, and/or INDEXES?
Based on the metalink note < Performance Degradation as a Result of 'enq: CF - contention' [ID 1072417.1]> It looks we need to turn on logging for at least table and lob segment. What about the indexes?

Indexes only get modified when the underlying table is modified. When you need recovery you don't want to do things that can interfere with Oracle's ability to perform its normal recovery. For indexes there will never be loss of data that can't be recovered by rebuilding the index.
But use of NOLOGGING means that NO RECOVERY is possible. For production objects you should ALWAYS use LOGGING. And even for those use cases where use of NOLOGGING is appropriate for a table (loading a large amount of data into a staging table) the indexes are typically dropped (or at least disabled) before the load and then rebuilt afterward. When they are rebuilt NOLOGGING is used during the rebuild. Normal index operations will be logged anyway so for these 'offline' staging tables the setting for the indexes doesn't really matter. Still, as a rule of thumb you only use NOLOGGING during the specific load (for a table) or rebuild (for an index) and then you would ALTER the setting to LOGGING again.

Yes, yes, yes, always use ONLY ONE Apple ID. Multiple IDs will cause multiple problems.
Deleting from one device will not result in deletion from other devices.
It's best to manage your devices from iTunes on a computer. The iTunes will know which device is which but you might want to name them (in iTunes) for your own convenience. You can then decide which music, apps, movies, etc. belong on which device(s).

Always use client 000 as a template, and never client 001. (A known exception is the SAP Solution Manager.)
Do not copy any application data from client 000 because the consistency of data and the number ranges cannot be guaranteed.
Only client 000 is populated with upgrades, Legal Change Packages, Support Packages, language imports and so on with new Customizing so that it always contains the current sample Customizing. This is why it is also so important that the copy is only carried out after the system is updated. Client 001, on the other hand, is obsolete. It serves only as a sample client and may be deleted at any time.

Missing Application Component Hierarchy for source system

I have a problem I hope you can help me with.
We have created a sandbox as a copy of an existing APO/BW production system. On this system we have created 2 source systems: 1) R/3, 2) The system itself (EAX).
The R/3 source system seems to work fine, but there is a problem with EAX. First time i opened the system I was met with the message "Application component hierarchy does not exist, Create?". Nothing happened when choosing create.
After reading through similar topics on this forum, I went into RSA6. The view in here is similar to that on production, so I saved and tried again. Now it does come up with a tree, but it only has one node (NEW_HIER_ROOT(No Text Found)) and no datasources.
I then tried to transport the Application component hierarchy" from the production system. That didn't solve it either (still looks the same).
Does anyone know how to fix this? It would be much appreciated.

Using a field hierarchy for selecting checkboxes?

I have a bunch of checkboxes in a PDF that are dynamically added to the PDF during its creation process. Each checkbox is a cell in a table, and I do not know the number of rows or columns that will be in the PDF beforehand. What we are trying to do is add a header row to the table that allows the users to select/unselect all the check boxes in a column at once. I figured I could use the field name hierarchy approach to select/unselect all the checkboxes as long as I named them appropriately but I appear to be missing something.
Take for example this table (assume [] denotes where a checkbox will go):

Category 2

[check.global.category2]
Some Product
[check.category1.cell1]
[check.category2.cell1]
Another Product
[check.category1.cell2]
[check.category2.cell2]
What I would like to do is add a JavaScript call so that when check.global.category1 is clicked I could add something like this to the click event:

field.checkThisBox() //or checkThisBox(false);
And that would toggle all the check boxes in the Category 1 column. However, that does not appear to work. Is there another mechanism to do this, or some way I can loop over all the check boxes that belong to the same hierarchy? I know this approach works with buttons and text fields but checkboxes appear to be different.

I found the answer. To get all the checkboxes use getArray() after calling getField.

I have been using MANY passwords, actually about 3 pages of them I keep written down, but thought I was being paranoid! By the sounds of it I should keep up with what I am doing even though it is a bit cumbersome.
There is a program called 1Password but the cost is a bit prohibitive and I have found in the past that I pay and download some of these programs and then find I cant understand completely how to use them, so for the time being I will continue with what I am doing, thanks to your input.
I did read somewhere that a strong password would be a series of statements that meant something to you--for example 'Ilovetopasstimeonmymac' (I love to pass time on my mac). I have also read that putting a # sign in with the characters and numbers has merit.

What should you use a second SSD for?

I have a few SSD drives and want to maximise the speed my Mac boots up but also in the apps I use.
One of the drives is a Scratch Disk I use for FCPX. Should I keep my iTunes Library, Apps, Mail and Photos on a separate SSD to my boot
drive to maximise speed opening app and accessing files.
I did think, by doing this would make a clean install or upgrade in the future a much easier process too.

If you don't need to frequently access data in your Home folder, then I would (and I do.) Or you can move folders to a slow drive and put aliases to them on the SSD (this is how I do it.)
How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu. You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed. When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

What setting should I use to save file for upload to youtube

Hi,
the link below is the video on youtube that I just saved using the first setting that I always use using Flash. Now because of the change over, as we have discussed I have to save the file then upload it for sites I upload to after the change. I know I can save it on the For Windows one but it is not HD. As you will see when you play this video it is all shakey (and not because I am shaking the camera ).

Should I just resign my self to using the work around and use the save for Windows and not the FLASH. or is there a setting I can use that gets rid of the shake. However, since most of what I post is for people trying to sell their horses I would like the best quality I can get up on YouTube.

Because YouTube is so unpredictable -- and always changing it encoding systems -- your best bet is to use the workaround and output as a WMV file.

How do I know "Roaming Network" is working with Airport Express and Airport Extreme and should I use extended wireless network for third Express?

Attempting to eliminate a dead spot in Wifi coverage [and implement AirPlay] have one Airport Extreme 802.11n and two Airport Express 802.11n's.

The Airport Extreme is of course connected to cable modem and Ethernet switch, and one Airport Express is connected to the Ethernet network. As per instructions for creating a "Roaming Network", Airport Express is set to same SSID, security type, and Password.
Questions:
1. How does the client device know which Airport to connect to? In other words, will it switch to the closer WiFi transmitter automatically? The WiFi reception problem is intermittent in the fringe areas so what I do not want it for it to stick with the more distant Airport Extreme in the basement when the Airport Express which is closer will work better.
2. How can I tell which of the Airports the attached client device is using?
The third Airport Express will be in a third location - I was planning on using it also for expanding coverage but after reading the warnings about performance suffering when purely using WiFi for the expansion in this location ("Wireless Extended Network" without an ethernet connection) I have figured that the single wired Airport Express will be adequate and will use the third Express to do Airplay only.

The Mac computer will automatically connect to the wireless access point with the strongest signal...which is probably the closest AirPort. An iPhone or iPad may not do this and will tend to stay connected to one AirPort.
2. How can I tell which of the Airports the attached client device is using?
On a Mac, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility. Click on one of AirPorts. In the area to the right, locate the AirPort ID and jot that down. Then do the same for your other AirPort.
Move your Mac near one of the AirPorts and log on to the wireless. Hold down the option key on the Mac while you click the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen. Look for the BSSID. That is the AirPort ID of the device to which you are connected.
If you are close to the "remote" AirPort, and you see the AIrPort ID of the "main" router when you are testing, then you know that the network is not configured correctly.

There will be a modest 10-15% bandwidth loss with the "extend" setup, assuming that the Express is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the AirPort to which it is associated. You can avoid the bandwidth loss if the Express is also connected via Ethernet as part of the roaming configuration.

Should I use the Audit_Warn Feature for what I need

Very new to Solaris. I'm currently using Solairs 10 (X86).
Can the audit_warn feature notify me via mail if the below would happen? Note: I have no hard or soft limit.
If someone (root maybe) stoped the auditd service or the audit dameon stoped working because someone pefromed an activity that had a negative impact on the auditd service.
As I understand the audit_warn can cause alot of mail traffic. It is recommended that mail not be sent every time as this could result in a the saturation of the file system that contains the mail spool directory.
Maybe the simple solution is a "if then" scenioro? Somthing like if the auditd service stops then notify root. Not sure if this is somthing you setup in the /etc/syslog.conf or is there another file?

I'm responding to the post indicated in the header of this post, though I beleive I am repeating semantics.
The auditd daemon calls the */../../audit_warn* 'script', under certain conditions... these conditions are defined for it via the audit_control file. Populating the audit_control file with the conditions which you desire the auditd daemon to consider, requires that you create "audit-flags" , and put them in a flags line like:
flags:_audit-flags_ .
Get familiar with man page format... it can be your friend.
If the page is too long then try this : [mo is the name of the file which is made in the local directory]
bash# man audit_control > mo
Reformating page...
bash#*cat -n mo*
this will number the lines
bash#*cat -n mo | grep flags*
this will give you numbered lines with the word patterns you are looking for.
Then scroll down to the line number and read around it.
you might want to make a numbered file of the man page for convenience :
bash#*cat -n mo > mor*
You might bump into the more command... if you are not wary.
You might want to peruse the audit_user man page at some point too, but conceptually I think my work is done.
As for the misleading someone , read "process". This auditing feature seems like a powerful way of identifying where the tentacles are meterialising... if not from who's grammar.

I read that the allhard option of */../../audit_warn* is used [by the auditd daemon, under default conditions] to mail only when the hard limit is exceeded for the first time [count = 1];BUT as the count increases, console messages are sent, but no mail. This prevents mail overload, but keeps the console flashing.
