Should I wait to buy a Macbook?

I have read so many great things about the Mac. I've read superb reviews from sites like Cnet and PCMag. Now that I looked into wireless networking with the Mac, I am thinking about waiting to buy one. I have read a few posts about crashes and kernels when running wireless on the Mac because of update 10.4.10. Has there been a patch for this problem? Also, I already have my wireless setup on my PC. I have a Linksys WRT54G router with a Motorola Surfboard SB5101. If I buy a Mac, would I have to reinstall the router software on it? Thanks for the help...

Like most things in life, it depends...
I bought a 1.83 GHz core2 duo Macbook in July 2007. For the most part, the Macbook is a very nicely designed and manufactured machine.
High points: nice keyboard, magsafe power connector, long battery life when running OSX, ability to run Windows XP or Vista natively, iLife software suite.
Low points: WiFi disconnects in OSX 10.4.10, lackluster LG/Philips LCD has a relatively narrow viewing angle and "only" 262,000 (18 bits) of color resolution. No PC-X or PCMCIA card slot.
I guess I'm biased because I bought a Macbook. I tend to run Vista on it more than OSX due to the WiFi issues in OSX (WiFi is OK in Vista). More importantly, I can run the current release of MS-Office in Vista. The Macbook is nice in that I can run either OS without 3rd party software or goofy emulators. I love tinkering with Garage Band in OSX for recreation. If you are planning to run Vista, upgrade to 2G of memory. The Macbook is nice for doing presentations, but you'll need a VGA or DVI pigtail adapter, each of which is a $20 accessory. Apple should've put a standard VGA socket on the Macbook, as VGA cords are the de facto video port in most every conference room.
The main reason you might want to delay purchase would be to have Leopard pre-installed or at least qualify for a low cost Leopard upgrade.

  • Should i wait with buying a macbook pro for the mac os x lion software?

    Hi there,
I've been saving up some money to buy myself a MacBook Pro 13", but I've been told to wait for the new lion upgrade.
It's not that I need the macbook right now, I mean, I can wait, but I don't want to wait for a system that's not refined yet.
I'm afraid the system might have bugs or issues or things...
So my question: should I wait till June/July with buying, or buy one now and have a good working system?
And do any of you guys know whether there'll be some kind of a grace period where they give you the new upgrade for free?
    Thanks in advance!

My take is to buy it when you need it. If that's now then buy it now. You can always upgrade to Lion when it comes out.

  • Little off-topic: Should I wait with buying new MacBook?

As U C I'm typing this on a PC. I would like to buy a MacBook, but I'm not sure if it's the right time.
A Leopard is expected to arrive in October and maybe an iLife '08 will be included with MacBooks. On other hand I can get a MacBook 10% cheaper now. Don't know what to choose...
I've heard rumors of a new MacBooks coming late '07. How sure is that? Is it worth to wait even longer?

Nobody here can answer that question for you, as your computing needs and budget are different than everyone else's. If you need a computer now then buy, otherwise if you keep waiting for the next best thing, you'll always be waiting.
*"I've heard rumors of a new MacBooks coming late '07. How sure is that? "*
Sorry, but nobody here can answer that question either as Apple does not discuss unannounced products, and discussion of such rumors is a violation of the terms of use of these forums.

  • Should i wait to buy a macbook or buy a 12" ibook g4?

im thinking about buying a new laptop and i have decided to make the swich to mac. ive been a pc user all my life. but im not sure if i should buy an ibook now or wait until the macbook comes out. what r ur thoughts about it?
    hp a1223w   Windows XP

Minor correction on last post, Bootcamp, to run Windows XP, is slated for the next release of OS X called Leopard, not 10.4.5 which is already released.
Since you asked for opinions....I'd tend to buy current technology (and I did with the last of the G4 mac minis). While the new Intel-based macbook will have super specs, it will be first generation on a new platform. While Apple is doing almost realtime revisions to their current Intel-based products, the fact is there are some growing pains (read through any of the Intel-based product discussions). I prefer the growing pains be with someone elses money.
If you buy a current iBook, it's a mature platform, and it will continue to be able to run existing software, as well as any universal software. You don't have to consider running non-universal programs under the emulator (Rosetta is a great tool, but there's a performance hit of up to 50% under emulation mode).
Use the iBook for awhile, and by then Apple will be on the nth generation of the Intel-based macbooks. In any event, you'll be thrilled with the switch to mac.

  • Should I wait to buy a MacBook Pro until Mountain Lion comes out?

I just don't want to lose any info I have if I buy now and then upgrade to Mountain Lion. Or mess something up, since I'd probably do that. (note: not the macbook pro with retina display, just a regular macbook pro).

Upgrading will not cause any data to be lost. If you are concerned about data loss, you may consider backing up to an external drive. You should probably be doing that anyway, since hard drives can fail at any time . In case you didn't already know, Macs purchased in between June 11th 2012 and the day of Mountain Lion's release qualify for a FREE Mountain Lion upgrade. Anyway, I would not worry about data loss.

  • Should I wait to buy a new Macbook?

Should I wait to buy a a new Macbook until the Mountain Lion Software comes out?

I wouldn't wait - you are eligible to get Mountain Lion download free if you buy a new MacBook now, and it'll tkae Apple a few days (longer if not purchased directly from the Apple Store) to update the image. You aren't missing anything placing the order now.

  • I'm running 10.6.8. Should I wait to buy Mountain Lion or buy 10.7 now? now?

I bought my MacBook Pro with 10.6.8 but it appears I need to buy the upgrade to 10.7 in order to use iCloud.  Can I upgrade to 10.7 for free? If not should I just wait to buy Mountain Lion this summer?

You cannot upgrade to Lion for free...the cost is low, though.  Only $30 (US).  That will get you more than just iCloud, there are other features as well.
Apple has announced some of the features of Mountain Lion on the website, are those features imporant to you?  If you can live without iCloud until ML is released, date of which has not been announced, then the decision to buy now or wait is up to you.  If you can make good use of iCloud now, then why wait?

  • Should I wait to buy ZEN Micro Ph

I am getting a part-time job soon and want to buy the ZEN Micro, but the ZEN Micro Photo is coming out in Summer 2005, and that looks good, so should I get the ZEN Micro or wait for the Colour screen version?
P.S I had my Muvo TX 256MB for 3 weeks and is great, though I should have waited and got the 52MB version it is only 70GBP at eBuyer now.

I was in the same situation as you, wanting a Zen Micro but wondered if I should wait till the Zen Micro Photo came out. I decided that I didn't need the colour screen to show people photos and just wanted a small portable music player so I went with a Black Zen Micro and I am very happy that I did

    DVD-Audio<
    DirectSound?-based EAX games<

The only thing in that list that will eventaully be resolved are the applications. There will be a new CD released that works in Vista. Decoding of Dolby Digital and DTS is no longer supported at the driver level by Vista. You will need to use software that has the capability to do so. DVD-Audio will not be supported. DirectSound was removed from Vista, DirectSound EAX games require ALchemy to function properly and only certain games are supported. 6. Speaker mode is not supported in Vista.

  • Should i wait to buy the 2015 retina macbook pro?

I've been wanting to buy the retina macbook for about a month. But im worried the new model will come out soon with better specs for the same price. Should i hold off on buying it? Or does it not really matter?

I am wondering this too, but usually no one says too much, because of policy on here.... I expect to see new Retina Macbook Pro's with the new 5th generation Intel processor's. I am waiting for now, because I don't need one right now today. My Late 2011 works flawlessly (knock on wood), so I'll probably keep it even with a new one. The price will probably be the same, or close.... Depends on if there will be a redesign of the Macbook Pro's, too. You never know, but the 12" Macbook Air and iPad Pro, may be taking priority, for redesigns, anyways. So, I would wait, as I am..... I'd like to here if there is any inside info from anyone on here....

  • Should I wait to buy MacBook Pro?

Hello, I am looking to buy a 13 inch MacBook Pro with retina display, but I have heard rumors that a new one will be released in later 2014. Is it worth the wait?

it is not worth the wait if you need a computer now;  if not,  sure why not wait.

  • HT5691 So should I wait to buy my applecare for my MacBook Pro until the one year warrantee is almost up?

Does it make a difference when you buy your applecare?

Thanks, I had forgotten that little but important detail!
I once considered Applecare for that specific reason and that is why it popped into my mind when I read the post.  I trust that my contrary answer was not meant in any way a criticism of your response.  Regarding its importance, that is to be determined by each individual.  For me it is now moot since I did not purchase Applecare.

  • Should i wait to buy applecare for my macbook pro until the one year warranty is almost up?

Would i benefit from waiting till the one year warranty  is almost up.  Because then i would maximize the time in which it is under warranty right??

If you get AppleCare before 90 days is up you also continue free phone tech support from Apple - so by getting it as early as possible you increase the time you can get free phone support. If you go past 90 days you won't be eligible for free phone support until you get AppleCare, but still get hardware warranty for the full one year from date of purchase.

  • Should I wait or get the Macbook?

    Hi!
I am currently shopping for a new laptop and i have narrowed my choices down to either the 13 in Macbook Air or the Pro Retina.
I'm a senior in high school and I need a new computer to replace my old macbook 2007. I plan to use most of the Microsoft Office applications on a daily basis, as well as, watching/downloading movies, listening to music, playing games such as COD or MMORPGS, and at times, light photo and video editing. I want a computer with enough power to get me through at least 4+ years.
Both of these products share the portability factor, but the Pro packs more power and ability to do the tasks i need.
Now, which one should I get, the Air or Pro (and if pro, which size and configurations) OR should I just wait for the release of the new Mac lineups at the WWDC 2013?
    Please help and thank you!

Apple doesn't have a set schedule for updating its hardware and anyone who has the information you need is bound by an NDA not to divulge it. My advice for these questions has been the same for well over 10 years. If you need a new computer waiting is just silly. If you want a new computer waiting makes sense.
The MBA and new retina models are not upgradeable and as such make it difficult to render any kind of reasonable assessment about how long they'll be usable for a particular user. I have a 2009 MBP that has given me 3 strong years and I fully expect to get at least another year of use - but had I been unable to upgrade its RAM and hard drive I'd have sold it in 2011. But I know lots of people who buy a computer and use it as is for 4-5 years.

  • Should I wait to buy an iSight?

So I really want to buy an iSight for my new mini and 23 in. apple cinema display. But from what i understand the current models are from 2004....Are these going to be updated any time soon with newer models? I'd hate to buy something at the end of it's product life... Does anybody have any recommendations as to what i should do?

    Hello Talkshowhost,
No one here knows about future Apple plans / products. If anyone here did know they would NEVER say anything.
Speculation about future Apple products is not allowed here.
If you want an iSight - Buy one. Waiting for the next update / upgrade is a very bad idea IMHO. If we all did that, we would all still be riding a horse to work.
    Regards
    Ian.
