Should I worry about power management load cycle destruction?

I can't say I know much about this, except that I've heard from multiple people that there's a problem involving HDD load cycles and laptop power management destroying the HDD, specifically on Ubuntu. is this something I should worry about? Thanks.

OK, I did some looking into this problem, and here's what I found...my load cycles were increasing by ~120/hour, and it seemed like that was a result of the APM setting on my hard drive being at 128. So I changed it to 254, and it seems to have stopped.
So I added "hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda" to /etc/rc.local. Will that workaround be sufficient? Will the increase in temperature be a problem?
Am I being specific enough? I'm kind of unsure if what I'm saying makes any sense.

The imac 24 can't be used as a monitor over a DVI connection or the like, Suzanne, but you may be able to achieve what you want to using "Screen Sharing" by networking the two computers. This lets your MBP effectively control what is running on the iMac.
See HERE for the basic setup. For information about how to access the "shareable" screen from the MBP see HERE.
One possible problem may be actually getting this set-up on the iMac if it is not already enabled, however, unless you can borrow a keyboard from someone (your password may have to be entered to enable it). You may be able to get around this, if necessary, using the "keyboard viewer" (which you can place in the menubar using System preferences > Keyboard, if you don't already have it there).

You are not making use of the Class object that you're passing to
getValue. You could use it to get rid of the warning:

Wondering about power management with desktop computers

I use Arch on my desktop computer, so there's no need to worry about conserving energy.
But my computer has been much louder since installing Arch; I assume this is because it is running at max, and that is because I have no power management tools installed.
Is running my computer at max speed all the time beneficial to the system? Or should I install something to scale the power on demand?

That is unfortunate.
I disagree with some of the things being pushed by the greens; A lot of what they push are thermodynamically or ecologically wrong when you look at the big picture. But, that said...
We should take reasonable steps to conserve wherever we can. There is no reason for a desktop to scream along at full speed running "Screen savers" that require significant GPU effort. At the least, a desktop should be configured to reduce CPU speed, turn off the displays after a couple minutes of non-use, turn off the eye-candy screen savers and spin down disks after some reasonable amount of time.
Look for peripherals that have low-power modes (especially printers)

Should I worry about a swollen battery?

This MacBook has some age on it. Besides the fact that it is the black macbook and the finish is terrible the laptop is awesome. The one thing I have noticed however, is that the battery has started to swell, such that the laptop no longer sits properly on the desk. It also gets extemely hot. I know it is out to old for coverage, I am just wondering where I can find an affordable battery. The Apple store told me $250 which I think is crazy. Is that so I buy A new macbook pro?
I don't have $1200 to spend. UGGH It seems to hold a charge, just wondering if I should just not worry about it? Put a fan under it for the heat??

Not happy with Apple battieries
Any opinions on the most reliable 3rd party battieries? I'm not having the best luck with "official" apple batteries. For the added price of Apple hardware I would hope they'd be more discerning about the 3rd-party sources for components in their computers.
My battery is now swollen, and isn't charging. I'm also having issues with the trackpad button clicking everything un-intentionally. Now I can't use my machine without external power and the trackpad disabled. I think the warped battery also put too much pressure on other components in the machine (just a guess)
*edit* after removing the battery the trackpad functions normally. the excess pressure from the battery was causing the issue.
I made the mistake of leaving my MacBook Pro in my car with the near-freezing temperatures of my garage. Knowing my battery would probably be drained I left it plugged in and checked on it the next day.
I'm not sure if it was swollen before charging, or if I needed to let my machine warm to room temperature before charging. Anyway, let my mistake be a lesson to everyone... don't leave your machines anywhere that is too hot or cold, 'cuz chances are it will cause problems. I almost always use a USB-powered laptop mat w/ fan to prevent heat problems, but freezing seems to be just as bad if not worse.
In the past my Macbook Pro batteries have failed repeatedly, and if not for my apple care plan it would have cost plenty to replace those batteries.
Of course the apple genius answer is that I leave my laptop plugged in too long, thus damaging the battery. They recommend I regularly let the battery drain to 5 or 10% followed by fully recharging. Good advice I suppose, and I haven't had issues with this last battery for a few years. On the other hand, I have a very old powerbook G4 that I leave plugged in non-stop for many months at a time and that battery has been working well since 2004 (about 9 years now). So what changed with the newer macbook batteries?

If I delete music off of my friends computer that is now mine, will his iTunes still have all his music and apps linked to his account? Should I worry about him losing his music?

So, a while ago my friend gave me his laptop, which is filled with his apps and such. I want to add my music and backup my phone onto the computer with my own Apple ID. If I delete all his music and such off of this computer, will he still be able to access it from his other accounts? Will everything still be linked to him? He owns a mac now if that matters.
Also, how would I go about cleaning out all of his music from this single computer so that it won't get in the way of my stuff?

Also, If this music is on my Apple ID and my computer, should I have to worry about them seeing my music? I'm probably just being stupid, but I have some music I would rather hate to admit that I have.
And if they have a mac, shouldn't everything already be synced to their computer? It would seem like that to me, but I've never owned one..

okay thanks for the fast reply both of you ...i believe you guys have more experience in terms of mac use and even agree with the fact that the way i'm using it its not normal..
But again there are few things to be kept in mind..firstly i sensed this change after my second display replacement ...and secondly which is quite important in the video that i've compared this sort of behaviour to the same 13" retina mac ..why didnt the second one fall like that.
P.S My case is still open at the the apple service center and a senior adviser has said that at the most what they can offer me is a new display replacement( i.e. a display replacement for the third time) So guys should i take that thinking a new hinge may have a better firmness to my mac.?

Find out what packages you have the require it and work out from there what functionality they need from mysql:

I see a 1/4 inch scratch on the glass. It is hardly noticeable and does not interfere with the nice graphics. What do I do?

I want to install a nvidia quadro 4000 graphic card on Hp pavilion m9540ch desktop PC. I open the desktop chassis and I found that there is no 6 pin auxiliary power connector coming out from the power supply. I am going to buy this connector "Dual 4Pin Molex-8Pin PCI-E Adapter" to supply power to Quadro 4000 GPU. Now, I am wondering whether my power supply (300 W) can support GPU (80W). My question is, how can I observe or know the average power consumption of my Hp pavilion m 9540ch PC? Is there any document that can explain the total power consumption of this PC or is there any utility to monitor the total power consumption on windows 7?

Should i worry about calibrating my air

I just got the macbook air a few days ago and have only had to charge it twice. I kept reading that i should calibrate my macbook air... is it too late to do it? If not, how do i do it? And is it necessary?

Sometimes my hard disk makes a low crackling sound. Anything I should be worried about?

I have a Pavillion DV6 6121tx, with a 5400 RPM 640GB hard drive. I bought this laptop 3 months ago, and recently sometimes i notice a low crackling sound coming. I guess it would be coming from the hard drive only.

Firstly thank you for your reply.
Indeed, a hard disk noise is not normal and just mean the end of his life. But I know this sound well because my other computers also crack and for some of it, it's unbearable. Yet they make it since long, this has never been otherwise, and their hard disk always go good.
My problem is that the noise appeared suddenly, for an unknown reason, and according to all the software I've tested, he's always fine.
In your opinion, when I will format my hard disk to install Windows 7, it could have an effect?
Otherwise, as a last resort, I would see the service after sale of my store and then we'll see ...
