Should InDesign be used for an academic journal?

Hi,
As an editor, I have been looking into the possibility of using InDesign as a layout program for an academic journal at our university. We currently use Word. I was wondering what the experts think of using InDesign for this function, in light of the nature of our journal. It is a 150-250 page volume put out twice a year. Besides the cover (which does not change), there are no graphics or images used, nor is there any special use of text or borders. It is simply a chaptered book with each chapter containing a new article, using only single column text, footnotes, and headers.
As I work through the tutorials, I am getting the idea that InDesign may not be that useful for our purposes because we are doing fairly basic word processing. What do others think of this? Is it unnecessary? What would be the advantages to using InDesign for production of a text-only book such as ours?
Thanks very much for any input you could provide!

With a little practice, you can format long runs of text in ID at an astounding rate. Just this week, I formatted a book of 58 chapters, no images (well, only two), and the odd heading and sub-heading here and there. It took me 22 hours for 650 pages. Halfway, I had to revisit the chapters I already had done to do a few last-minute changes, so for the next volume I think it'll take, oh, 16 hours maybe.
(My two main speed-tricks are:
1. Use templates. Each of the chapters of that big book was a separate file, tacked together using the Book function. For a journal consisting of articles of about 20 pages each, you might want to do that as well. Always keep your templates clean and up-to-date -- if you change a global text style, use the Synchronize Book option to update all files, but don't forget to update the template as well.
2. Set hotkeys for all major paragraph and character styles. Don't bother about this for low-frequency stuff like chapter titles, as there are precious few 'comfortable' shortcut combo's. Assign them to body text, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level headings, indenting quotes; in other words, all stuff that comprised about 90% of your typical body text.
I've been using the same style hierarchy and names for years now (something over a decade), and I can apply the top 10 at a stroke of my fingertips; others get the Quick Apply treatment. No mouseing around required.)

  • The server farm account should not be used for other services

I have created a new SharePoint Foundation 2013 Farm. I only used the Farm Configuration Wizard to create the Search Service Application, all other aspects of the Farm was created using PowerShell.
The SharePoint Health Analyzer is reporting the following error:
Title: The server farm account should not be used for other services.
    Severity: 1 - Error
    Category: Security
Explanation: DOMAIN\FARM_ACCOUNT, the account used for the SharePoint timer service and the central administration site, is highly privileged and should not be used for any other services on any machines in the server farm.  The following services were
found to use this account: Distributed Cache Service(Windows Service)
    Remedy: Browse to
http://centraladminsite:port/_admin/FarmCredentialManagement.aspx and change the account used for the services listed in the explanation. For more information about this rule, see "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=142685".
Now I understand how to change the account used to run the Distributed Cache Service, but my query is what account should I use in the least privelage model? I have setup the following 6 accounts as per TechNet guidelines (Link)
and am not sure if one of these accounts should be used or if another account is required:
    SQL Server service account
    Setup user account
    Server farm account
    SharePoint Server Search service account
    Default content access account
    Application pool identity
After reviewing the TechNet article again, I don't fully understand the section titled "Service application accounts". Is the article advising me to create a seperate account for each row in the table? e.g. 1 account for Business Data Connectivity
Service, a different account for "Application Discovery and Load Balancer Service", another account for "App management" and another account for "Distributed Cache", so 4 extra accounts if I choose to install all of these services
    within the Farm?
Also, what does the article mean when it says "Plan one set of an application pool and proxy group for each service application that you plan to implement."? How do I go about doing this?

Inder: Yes, It is suggested to have multiple service account for each service application. This increases security and dependencyof 1 account on multiple Service applications. Like below
    SQL Server service
    Local System account (default)
    Setup user
Member of the Administrators group on the local computer
    Server farm
    Network Service (default)
    No manual configuration is necessary.
    SharePoint Server Search Service
By default, this account runs as the Local System account.
If you want to crawl remote content by changing the default content access account or by using crawl rules, change this to a domain user account. If you do not change this account to a domain user account, you cannot change the default content access account
to a domain user account or add crawl rules to crawl this content. This restriction is designed to prevent elevation of privilege for any other process running as the Local System account.
    Default Content Access
No manual configuration is necessary if this account is only crawling local farm content. If you want to crawl remote content by using crawl rules, change this to a domain user account, and apply the requirements listed for a server farm.
    Content Access
Same requirement as the default content access account.
    Profile import Default Access
    Same requirements as server farm.
    Excel Services Unattended Service
Must be a domain user account.

Inder: Each service account has a application pool and you can plan to use same application pool for multiple
service accounts if required. These application pool are then consumed by proxy connection
of each service application. On service application pool, you can see all the service applications and its proxy connection.

  • Should Java be used for this type of application

I am building a knowledgebase that is going to be searchable in web browser. Lucene is good search engine and it's in Java so would use JSP pages. However everyone has Win 2000 machines and it's going to be annoyin to install that on everyone's machine. Is there a way to put it on a shared drive and make it work ? I'm confused.

Java should be used for everything... :)
You could write an application for a central server, and then make a web interface for it that your users could use. You could write a process that would index your data into a database table, which would be easier to search, and then have your web frontend search the database based on whatever requirements the user specifies.
I'm not really familiar with lucene, but I'm sure you could run it on a server, and make a web interface with java to interact with it.

  • Should EntryProcessors be used for long-running operations?

    Hi Gene and All,
a couple of other questions come from the seemingly unexhaustible list :-)
         - what happens if the caller of an InvocableMap.invokeAll or invoke method dies?
         - all entryProcessors complete regardless of the client being there or not
         - all already started process method calls complete, the unprocessed entries will not get processed
         - something else happens
         - what happens if the caller of an InvocableMap.aggregate method with a parallel-aggregator dies
         - all aggregate methods in the parallel-aggregator complete
         - the aggregate methods in the parallel-aggregator stop during processing
         - something else happens
         - should an entryprocessor or a parallel-aware entryaggregator implement a comparably long-running operation (e.g. jdbc access), or does that seriously affect performance of other concurrent operations within the cluster node or the entire cluster (e.g. becuase of blocking other events/requests)?
         - should the work manager be used instead for these kinds of things (e.g. jdbc access)?
         Thanks and best regards,
         Robert

    Robert,
As soon as an EntryProcessor or EntryAggregator get delivered to the server nodes, it will get executed regardless of the requestor's state.
In regard to long-running operations the only thing you have to be conscious about is a number of worker threads allocated for such a processing. Since there is a single client thread issuing a request, it would suggests allocation as many worker threads (across the cache server tier) as there are client thread (across the presentation/application tier).
         Regards,
         Gene

  • What should I be using for an embedded database?

I'm still learning C# in the .NET environment and I'm currently working on a Windows desktop app. I've read that LocalDB can be used as an embedded database if I want to let other people buy any apps I make in the future. But I've also read that SQL Server
Compact Edition is what I should be using and those sources say that LocalDB isn't suitable for an app that's made so that other people can buy it. Which is correct? Is SQL Server Compact Edition still being developed by Microsoft?
I've got a laptop with 64 bit Windows. If I install a 64 bit version of the either of the above database software can I still make 32 bit database files for use as embedded databases for C# apps?
I'm interested in learning to make Windows desktop apps as well as Windows Store apps and apps for Windows tablets.
I've read about SQLite but I'm thinking either LocalDB or SQL Server Compact Edition would be more compatible with C# code. Am I right? I'm using Visual Studio Community 2013 on Windows 8.1.
I've read about the SQL Server Compact/SQLite Toolbox by ErikEJ
    Thanks

You cannot use SQL for a mobile application.
I would suggest using SQLLite and it is not very complicated to use with c#.
If you select 32-bit version of the database, you will not have compatibility issues. It will work for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.
Even if you select SQL Lite you cannot use it both from mobile and desktop devices. You will face serious issues.
What I suggest is to have an online database and read from there to your local databases if you wanna use a database.
You can reach that database with web service(WEB API).

According to KB Article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159 Mac OS X versions (builds) for computers, that model came w/Lion pre installed.  If the seller is not including the system DVDs that originally came w/the computer (per Apple's license agreement), I would not purchase.  You would be purchasing a glorified door stop.

  • What programming language should a beginner use for developing apps for mac and I phone etc

    Hi all
I have just made the transition from pc to mac, years a go I dabbled in visual basic and was going to give it another go but having made the move to mac, now owning an iMac/ iPhone and iPad I am now thinking I would be better off learning a programming language that would enable me to create program's /apps for apple products. Can someone please point me in the right direction.

If you want to develop apps natively, you'll have to go with Objective-C (language), Xcode (IDE), and the Cocoa Touch libraries. Objective-C is a super-set of C. So, if you've no background in C, start there. In fact, here are three books I recommend:
Dave Mark, Learn C on the Mac:
    http://www.amazon.com/Learn-C-Mac-Dave-Mark/dp/1430218096
Aaron Hillegass, Objective-C Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide:
    http://www.bignerdranch.com/book/objective-c_programming_the_big_nerd_ranch_guid e
Joe Conway & Aaron Hillegass, iOS Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide (3rd Edition):
    http://www.bignerdranch.com/book/ios_programming_the_big_nerd_ranch_guide_rd_edi tion_
Dave Mark's book covers C, and you probably don't need all of it. Once it gets to really elaborate storage issues (for which you'll end up using Core Data on iOS), you can skim. On the up side, you have some programming experience, which will make learning C easier. On the downside, it's in VB, which isn't as similar to C as most other languages are. But, it's a start.
Hillegass covers some basic C in his book on Objective C as well. So you might can start with that. The final book only touches on Objective-C lightly and is really about using the iOS frameworks to do real work. It's entirely project based and will get to you building things and testing them and really creating iOS apps.

  • What dpi should I be using for prints?

I usually print photos directly from within Aperture by using the Apple/Kodak 'order prints' system built in to Aperture. However, I have had a few problems with this and decided recently to try using a local vendor instead. I notice the vendor recommends .jpg files with a minimum dpi of 300. When I looked at the export settings in Aperture (under "jpg-original size"), the dpi is set at 72. My questions are:
    1) Will changing it to 300 dpi make a big difference?
    2) When I've been ordering from Apple/Kodak using Aperture's print service, what settings are being used there? 72, 300 or other?
    3) If I give digital files to someone on a CD, should I export at 300 dpi if they intend to make prints? I have, evidently, been exporting at 72 dpi all this time...
I should probably point out that I shoot in RAW, then convert to .jpg when I've done my adjustments and am ready to export to a CD.
    Many thanks.

    Jamie,
As iDave stated, the DPI number that your picture indicates is not necessarily relevant to your printing process. What is important is how many pixels you have to work with.
That 300 DPI is a somewhat magical number, dealing with physics and human anatomy. At normal reading distance (something like 16 inches?), the average human eye can tell differences if a picture is printed at less than 300 DPI. That is, your eye is can resolve up to 300 DPI at reading distance.
To find the DPI, there is no setting. Take the number of horizontal pixels in your picture (let's say 3000), and divide it by the horizontal size of your photo (Let's say 6 inches if you are printing 4x6). That photo can have 500 DPI, when printed, if the photo printer supports resolutions that high. 500 DPI is greater than 300 DPI, so your eyes will be happy. They will be just as happy as if you had printed with 1800 pixels wide, which is 300 DPI. If you print out a photo that is 1200 pixels wide to a 4x6 print, you will have 200 DPI, and your eye will tell that things aren't really quite crisp.
So, taking the math the other way, if you are printing 4x6 prints, you would want the long dimension to be at least 6x300=1800 pixels. In other words, don't crop a photo to less than 1800 pixels wide and expect it to print sharply. Also, don't use an Aperture export option that reduces the number of pixels ("TIFF - 50% of original size") if your original was less than 3600 pixels wide.
All this math of course has nothing to do with the quality of your original. If your original wasn't in focus, printing it as a 4x6 with 300 DPI will look out of focus. If you threw away a lot of pixels because it's a low quality JPEG, you won't get those pixels back and the photo may look blocky at any size.
This also says nothing about how good your eye really is, too, and how far away you will be when viewing your prints.
    Hope this makes sense,
    nathan

  • Which IP address should I be using for a socket?

I'm trying to create a socket to connect to my IP address. The problem is that I have an "outside" IP address and an "inside" IP address.
According to http://whatismyipaddress.com/, my IP address is 97.100.76.196. But aside from that, my wireless internet router assigns different devices in my home different IP addresses. For example, on my computer, it is 10.0.0.9. So when I create a Socket, what would my parameters be since I essentially have 2 different IP addresses?
new Socket("which IP address???", int port); Thanks so much!

    REisinger1 wrote:
But if someone connects externally to THIS computer, how will only one IP address get them here?If someone outside your network (aka on the internet) is going to connect to your computer here is what will happen.
    1) They will connect to your routers public IP address. (the 97.x.x.x one you shouldn't have posted).
    2) You will set up the router to forward requests on port Y to port Y on your computer using it's internal addess (the 10.x.x.x one).
    Everything works.
To do (2) is not a Java question but a question related to your router. So you'll have to read the documentation and if you have follow up questions ask them on an appropriate forum (not this one).
There is another option as well but that requires you to have a second public IP address for your computer (which would make your computer on the Internet directly). I don't recommend this approach for you because you'd need a second IP from your ISP and there are a certain number of security considerations involved as well.

  • Latest version of Firefox incompatible with programs used for online academic studies 1) Blackboard and 2) Turnitn. Why does Firefox not know about this given number of students studying online? What can be done about it?

To solve problem I had to downgrade the version of Firefox from latest to an earlier version.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • Sales office not available and SHOULD not be used for determination

    Hi experts,
I am encounting an issue with the organizational model.
We do not want the sales office to be determined through the org model, we just want to be able to add it to the right sales areas in BPs or transactions.
I have build ang enhanced org model where the sales offices and groups are assigned to more sales areas. I have not marked the determination on the office and groups, since I do not want to determine this automatically and since if I mark this, my pop-ups for the transactional data determination becomes impossible to overview.
However, if I do not mark the determination in the sales offices and groups, they are not availeble in the drop downs for Bps and transactions.
Can someone please advise how to solve this?

  • What settings should I be using for importing?

I currently have 3 sources of music - my own CDs, iTunes, and eMusic.
I've left the settings in iTunes 7 at the default "AAC" but I just noticed there is an mp3 option in there. Which is better? What about Apple Lossless and the other options?
Interestingly, even though AAC seems to be set at 128, I've noticed that only my iTunes purchases and my personal CDs stick to this rate; the mp3s that I bring in from eMusic seem to import automatically at a VBR anywhere from 160 to 200.
Any help and advice is appreciated. I've already imported my entire personal CD collection, but I'd like to do the highest quality option for the future.

Thanks for your replies to this topic.  I just discovered the worm gear option yesterday while talking to a professor.  I think that is the route we are going to take because the DC motor won't be as expensive as a high-torque stepper or servo.  Also, I have three engineers that will be calculating the motor size based on gear reduction, spool size, cable length, and the load that we have to lift (which is about 120 lbs.).  If any of you would like to suggest a motor size, that would be great too.  I'm thinking something around 1HP should probably do it.  My goal is to stay cost-effective while making an easy apparatus.  I know that the worm gears may also be inefficient at times but it seems like the best solution for this application.  Not to mention it's not to hard for our mechanical engineers here to make the spool and bearings.  And I believe you can buy a DC motor that interfaces directly with a worm gear.  However, a follow up question is what computer hardware do I need to control the voltage of the motor so I have speed control?  Is this done through an RS232 board?  My output from the LabVIEW program will be voltages, from which device is that binary signal converted into physical voltage?  Thanks for your help so far.
