Should iTunes be THIS RAM intensive?

Hey all,
I have a super-huge library, first of all (34,000 songs), and all of them are on external drives (should that have anything to do with it?). But, when a song is simply playing and iTunes is in the background, should it go really slowly and take up between 170-270mb of RAM? Is there any way to make it speed up?
Thanks!
Alec

No, it wasn't. iTunes froze on the "Preparing ..." step. I was just wondering whether I should give it more time or to disconnect, restart, and restore. I finally figured that if iTunes was still spinning and unresponsive after an hour and a half I should probably do the latter. I restored and everything is working. Next time, will it help to have no other applications running? I would rather this didn't happen again, but it could have just been a fluke.
And thanks for the quick response!

Bought a New Macbook Air and wanting to transfer only iTunes and iPhoto stuff to the new Macbook Air. How should I do this? Ive got and External HD acting as Time Machine but the Data on there is 143G worth and the New Macbook Air is a 128G HD. So i dont need all the extra Documents but want to keep them on the External HD which has been Partitioned.
Question is - How do I transfer the iTunes and iPhoto info into the New Macbook air and keep all its settings ect and also keep the Docs ect in the HD? Time Machine wont work as there is too much info for the New Macbook Air.
    What should I do?

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

ok, so i bought a imac 27 about 4 months ago, and now they release a new one!  ****... So my question is, should I sell this one (which by the way is the i5 2.8 with 1 gb 5750 and 4gb ram) and buy the new imac 27 i5,or keep the one i have and buy more ram. I mostly use my computer for photoshop cs5 and illustrator cs5 for graphics out put as well as surfing the web and music.
Please give me you thoughts on what I should do!!  Thanks  lot!

The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!

  • HT1725 Some songs that I paid for fully downloaded, but it is only playing the small sample piece from the Itunes store. How should I fix this?

I had a Wish List with about 7 or 8 songs on there and I purchased them today. They all downloaded fine, except for 2. These two songs completed the download from what the computer says, but it will only play the short sample avaliable from the Itunes store. How should I fix this?

Other people have been having similar problems with songs over the last few days, I assume that there has been a problem with Apple's servers.
Depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting them from your iTunes library and redownload them via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes : re-downloading.
If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music or if they re-download in the state then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find those songs and use the 'Report a Problem' link.

  • HT201210 I tried to update my ipa to OS7 and now it's stuck on an itunes screen.  I don't even use itunes on this ipad.  I hae tried restring and it doesn't work.  What should I do?

I tried updating my ipad to OS7.  Now it is frozen on an itunes screen.  I dont even use itunes on this devie.  I have tried restoring but nothing works.  Any suggestions?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • When I import a commercial CD itunes will create 2 identical albums and put all of the songs except one into one album and put the other song into the other album by it self. How can I combine them all into one album and why is itunes doing this?

When I import a commerical CD Itunes will create 2 identical albums and put all of the songs except one into one album and put the other song into the second album that it created.  Why is itunes doing this and what can I do to combine them into one album?

I found this to be somewhat helpful: Grouping Tracks into Albums
What I did was to put in the same name for Album Artist in every track.  That seemed to do the trick (previously all those fields were empty).  It seems like a lot of work for a simple thing.
iTunes knows (or should know) that these tracks were imported from one CD. So why is it relying on incomplete data from the gracenote database?

  • How can I convince iTunes that this is the same machine to avoid installing all my iPod Touch Apps?

I've had to rebuild my hard drive and reinstall all the software. What a pain. Now iTunes wants to tell me that I am re-syncing from a new machine and wants to reinstall all of my Apps. It is the same machine, and all the Apps show up in iTunes that are on my iPod Touch. I do not want to have to reinstall all of the iPod Apps and try to restore all of their data. How can I convince iTunes that this is NOT a different machine?

If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.

  • Hi , I would like to ask you about purchase item transfer to ipad from mac book Itunes, But This message will be notified on screen this ipad could not be synced because this computer is no longer authorized with that purchased item on this ipad.

    Hi ,
I would like to ask you about purchase item transfer to ipad from mac book Itunes, But This message will be notified on screen
"This ipad could not be synced because this computer is no longer authorized with that purchased item on this ipad"
I did authorized in the store, but still did not transfer to the mac. Could you please to tell me what should I do it? Please let me know that as soon as possible.
    Regards,
    Thank you

The iPad is fine.  But the computer you're syncing with needs to be authorised with the Apple ID that was used to buy the material on the iPad.  You do this by picking the 'Authorize' item from the menu in iTunes and entering the account name and password.

  • When I disconnect my iphone 3gs(iOS) from computer, the device disappears from my itunes. This prevents me from doing a wireless sync. how do i fix it so that my device stays on itunes without having to plug it in all the time?

When I disconnect my iphone 3gs(iOS) from computer, the device disappears from my itunes. This prevents me from doing a wireless sync. how do i fix it so that my device stays on itunes without having to plug it in all the time?
it worked the first few times i did it but the next day after i closed out of itunes once, the device only appears when i plug in my phone.

Whenever a menu choice is grayed out, that is because you have Restrictions turned on in Settings.  Be sure to turn it off.
You are confusing an itunes store account with an icloud account.  You two can continue using the same ID for itunes (thus sharing purchased music, apps, etc.), but you really should have separate accounts (different IDs) for icloud, since an account is intended for one user to keep his/her devices in sync.
To create a new icloud account, go to
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/
Then go to Settings>icloud and scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Delete Account.  (have restrictions turned off)  That will disconnect the device from the account but will not delete data in icloud or other devices.  Then sign in using the new ID.

  • Should I see this on startup? re: Two-SSL problems.

We're having some trouble getting two way ssl to work and I was wondering if when using democert.pem and ca.pem whether we should still see this message upon startup?
I have created a trusted keystore which basically is a copy of the cacerts file and contains the ca certificate from the client certificate.
<Mar 9, 2005 6:00:57 PM GMT> <Info> <Security> <090515> <The certificate chain could not be completely checked for issues which could cause it to be rejected by
a peer during SSL handshaking, no action is required unless peers are rejecting the certificate chain.>
We are using Axis as a client (JDK 1.4 with no weblogic jars) to a WL7sp4 homed webservice and I have one certificate in the client keystore and I can see that chooseClientAlias gets called on the client.
On the server we see the following SSL debug information
    <Mar 9, 2005 5:09:54 PM GMT> <Debug> <TLS> <000000> <validationCallback: validat
    eErr = 16>

    .record.alert.Alert@754e13 Severity: 2 Type: 40
Resulting in a hand shake failure on the client.
    I'm confused by the message
    "Required peer certificates
    not supplied by peer"
because if we use a web browser it explicitly will say NO_CERTIFICATE but when we use the Axis client that doesn't appear in the log so I don't know if this is a problem with the client not sending the client certificate or not. I do see that chooseClientAlias is called during the startHandshake of the SSLSocket.
Does CERT_CHAIN_INCOMPLETE CERT_CHAIN_UNTRUSTED appear even if the client didn't provide a client certificate in the first place is are the errors above indicative of a problem with the certificate chain of the client certificate itself?
    For completeness.

Now you know why it was $525.  Also realize you are getting a computer that isn't a warranty computer.  How much did you save?
Read the fine print on the Squaretrade warranty.  Make sure they won't turn it away for the same reason Apple does.
Can you live without the light?  Even if it got wet in the past it boots now.  If I buy a used car and the radio doesn't work but I get it for a really good price then I figure that's part of it if I can live with it and it doesn't interfer with day to day use.
It would be nice to know why the hard drive failed their test. Obviously if the computer boots it isn't total toast.  Clearly somebody has been inside the computer to add RAM and maybe change the drive?  That doesn't freak me in a used computer.
Maybe somebody can comment on non idential RAM but with some computers with RAM from a reputable upgrade source it doesn't matter.  Post the exact specs of the second chip.
My only question is, how up-front was the person from whom you bought the computer?  Did they tell you about the light?  It isn't a critical part but it is something you can assume to be working unless they tell you it isn't.  If they didn't, what else didn't they tell you?
Screws will freak Apple Service because they only look at stuff where they know 100% what's been done to it and nobody not-certified has messed with it.  I have done all kinds of things to my computer that would have voided the original warranty 20x over but it long ago went out of warranty.  It purrs.

Relax.  This is completely normal and is not unusual at all.
    It will be reversed.

You may need to try this More than Once...
Be sure to Follow ALL the Steps...
But... if the Device has been Modified... this will Not necessarily work.
