Should my DNS server be talking to the internet?
I have the DNS service running on my OSX server in order to use Open Directory and server-based home folders. To use these server-based home folders I have to put the IP address of the server in the "DNS Server" entry on all the machines in Network Preferences.
Because the workstations here would seem to be going to the file server for DNS, do I need to open ports on my router or something so that the server can provide this info? I'm having some weird email issues with emails not arriving in a timely manner (inter-office via the internet, some arrive days late) and slow response times in Safari (page takes a while to start loading, and then loads very quickly once server found) so I'm wondering if this is what's causing it.
Any hints appreciated. Thanks!
If you only use your own DNS on both server and LAN clients (you should with your setup of using the same domainname internally - a bit "ugly" but it works) you need to also setup any external services IP numbers such as any mail and web servers (and others).
It wasn't me who set it up like this, but I'm stuck with it! What do you mean when you say to "setup any external services IP numbers"? DO you mean I need to tell the server where to find the mail server so that it finds it more easily? Where do I put them? And would it just be the mail server address, i.e. I assume I don't need to put in every website we want to access? No, that would be silly... but then... who knows.
I would add forwarders (your ISP DNSes) to /etc/named.conf and turn off IPv6.
In theory I know about these unix style text files, but do I need to be logged in as root to see them? I can't see the /etc directory and searching for named.conf brings up nothing. Also, I turned off IPv6 on the server and shortly after someone with a server based home folder got a message sayiing that they'd lost connection to all the mounted volumes on that server with "disconnect all". Turning IPv6 back on made that message go away so I don't want to play with that again for the time being!
Is there a way to set these things up without resorting to editing text files? I'm an old-skool mac user and so it's a bit scary. I should have made that clear from the beginning. Thanks!

Modem AEBS Laptop. Which of those should have DNS server details set?
Hi,
I have a modem which is connected to an AEBS. And the AEBS connects via air to my laptop. Which of these three things should have the DNS server IP addresses, supplied by my ISP, set in them, and which shouldn't?
The modem has a web page based set up, which has a DNS set up available. It seems to have a mind of its own and ignore my settings -- resets to what it was before (which isn't the case of other settings for the modem)
The base station in its set up has DNS server IP address fields, which was already filled in (automatically possibly -- I can't remember) with my ISP's DNS addresses.
And there's the places for DNS addresses in the Network in System Preferences. This was empty but I've now put in my ISPs settings there. Either way, with or without, doesn't seem to make any difference.
Can anyone tell me where there is info online about where to put DNS info correctly for a modem > AEBS > computer set up please? Or maybe someone knows?
TIA,
John.I never set the DNS servers on any client computer, Mac or Windoze. Note that in the DNS Servers: section of the Network Preferences it says (Optional). I suggest you leave that space blank.
Similarly, if you are using your AEBS as your gateway router and your Internet connection to your is configured Using DHCP there is no need (and no benefit) to predefining the DNS servers.
If you have a situation where you must pre-set the DNS servers IP addresses, then I would do it only in the AEBS.
BTW, I assume this is in conjunction with your other thread about the AEBS crapping out every few hours while downloading files. Remember that DNS is used only to resolve names to IP addresses as in each time you call up a different URL. DNS doesn't enter the picture in the middle of any other kind of transaction. I suspect that DNS is not your problem in this case. -
What DNS server is that in the window.. 65.254.254.102
So. I have 1 DNS server, 1 DC, 1 GC etc. One.
It essentially is a lightweight network only serving a few PCs. Strangely it is getting these events for a DNS that doesn't exist.
The dynamic registration of the DNS record '_ldap._tcp.pdc._msdcs.araroprinting.com. 600 IN SRV 0 100 389 AGPYYC-SVR-003.araroprinting.com.' failed on the following DNS server:
DNS server IP address: 65.254.254.102
Returned Response Code (RCODE): 5
Returned Status Code: 9017
For computers and users to locate this domain controller, this record must be registered in DNS.
USER ACTION
Determine what might have caused this failure, resolve the problem, and initiate registration of the DNS records by the domain controller. To determine what might have caused this failure, run DCDiag.exe. To learn more about DCDiag.exe, see Help and Support
Center. To initiate registration of the DNS records by this domain controller, run 'nltest.exe /dsregdns' from the command prompt on the domain controller or restart Net Logon service.
Or, you can manually add this record to DNS, but it is not recommended.
ADDITIONAL DATA
Error Value: DNS bad key.
I have looked this up and down all over and can't seem to find a) an answer that work and b) the DNS entry anywhere in the server. So what gives? I read through this conversation and it's almost identical. There is no old domains anywhere and I have run
through all the suggestions. Anyone have some insight?
-JakeHi,
You may try to restart NetLogon service on DC, in order to re-register related DNS record. Open CMD and type each line and end with Enter:
Net stop netlogon
Net start netlogon
Check your DNS server and to see if the record is listed.

Thank in advance.Hi Dave,
Any luck on this thread? Where you able to find a work around on this problem? I am encountering also the same problem thou my OCR and Voting Disk are on raw partition.
I have done clean-up using the "dd" command and re-install CRS a couple of times and still with no luck...
Hope RAC gurus can help us on this.
Any help would be much appreciated.

How to access the local server host website in the internet
I set up the server and host on local website, I wonder how I could use other mac to access this local website via the internet?
Thanks! The following should give you enough to search for discussions, as well as some general details of IP network gizmos and boxes: You'll need an ISP tier of service that allows remote access and preferably with a static IP address (static versus dynamic IP). This as various ISPs prohibit server-oriented protocols such as HTTP TCP port 80 traffic, and some firewall server-oriented ports. You'll then either need to use either dynamic DNS with your public dynamic IP — this is the hacking-around and not-really-for-production approach — or static IP with traditional DNS, and you'll also need to enable what's called port forwarding (sometimes also called virtual server) through your gateway-firewall-NAT device and into your server for TCP port 80 and possibly also TCP port 443. This port forwarding gets the incoming connections from the 'net into your public IP address (static or dynamic) mapped through to your NAT'd IP address space and your private IP address for your server.
As the first part of getting any of this to work with OS X Server, launch Terminal.app on the server and issue the following harmless diagnostic command:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
This checks for common errors in the local DNS setup, and broken networking and broken DNS tends to cause other errors elsewhere in the environment. You'll need to enter an administrative password for the sudo, you might get a one-time informational message from the sudo, and you'll then get some configuration details and then an indication that DNS and local networking needs no changes, or that there are configuration issues. -
If I want to talk to someone over the internet. I am guessing that my three options
are skype and yahoo or microsoft messenger. How do I set up yahoo or microsoft
messengerso that I can talk online.
I have downloaded yahoo messenger and skype.
And I can send typing messages with yahoo or microsoft messenger already. I
purchased a usb headset - do i just contact the person now with their email
and talk?
martiniHello martini
Skype should work for you. See their great Help web pages for all your questions on making Skype work or work better. Skype even offers dedicated Skype discussions and free technical support for your Skype-specific questions.
Yahoo! Messenger for Mac doesn't do audio. That is just how Yahoo writes the software. We cannot change that.
Mac-to-Mac, iChat AV (part of your Mac OS X software) is usually best, whether for text, audio, video, or all. If you are concerned about connecting with PC friends, iChat can connect via Jabber applications for text chat and with any PC that is using an AIM server client application for video and audio. For help getting started with iChat and for suggestions about headsets, see this current thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5442877#5442877
A USB headset that work with your Mac should be fine, but, if you already have added speakers and a mic to your system, they should work for iChat AV and Skype. With either application, I almost never need to resort to headphones to limit echo or feedback on my G5 tower Mac.
If you are looking for other chat alternative software applications, you can consider the apps in the Chatting and Conferencing section of this page:
http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/EZJim/EZJimpage7.html
Skype and the other apps identified as "Cross Platform" will be easiest to use for contacts that use PCs.
Microsoft Messenger (MSM) (and the older MSN Messenger) for Mac (MSMM) are text only apps. You cannot use iSight (or any camera) with MSMM for Mac. MSMM (for Mac) will connect with MSM whether on PCs or on other Macs, but for text ONLY.
There are two alternative clients of the MSMM server that allow Mac video chat (but no audio) with PC Microsoft/MSN Messenger users:
• Mercury Messenger for Mac and
• aMSN for Mac OS X
Either offers the same functions. Use whichever you find more reliable or easier to use.

Accessing a local server web service over the internet
Hello,
This is not the first time i will configure over the internet access to a local server but this particular one is giving me a major headache and i thought to share the config with anyone who can help ppoint where the problem may be. While my NAT transalations seem to be working, when i attempt to browse the public IP, i am supposed to be routed to the local server, but this doesnt happen and i just get a blank page on my web browser. FemiHi Alain,
Browsing the public IP from a remote location to the site, so its over the internet.
Not sure I understand what you refer to as SVI, could this be the VLAN? If it is, then I can say it is up because I can ping the server which is on this VLAN from within the router when I log into it. Also, when I am within the LAN, I am able to browse to the local IP on the server.
I suspect some firewall or access list issue may be preventing something...

Networked Macs see Windows server, but suddenly not the internet
My girlfriend works at a small business running about 10 PCs and a Windows server. Also on the network are about 15 VOIP telephones. She's had an emac on the network working fine for a few months. It was connecting to the server and the to the internet. Then one day, no more internet. (None of the PCs are experiencing this problem.) Coincidentally, the next day a new Mini arrived. We set it up (to 10.4.3) and it saw the server, it saw the internet. Everything was beautiful and then poof. No more internet. It was working when she left work, it even received POP mail between her leaving last night and coming in this morning.
(I don't think this is the culprit, but it's worth mentioning that first thing this morning, she installed Microsoft Office. After she installed Office, the internet no longer worked. She didn't check her internet connection before installing the new software, but I suspect this is not a related issue. The emac does not have Office installed at all.)
The macs have been restarted and put to sleep and then woken up. All of the PCs get their internet connection after routing through the VOIP phones and so do the macs. We've taken the phone out of the equation, but still no luck.
Sorry this is such a vague description of the problem, but I don't know so much about inter-platform networking, so I'm not sure what to look for. And I don't know anything about TCP/IP or other networking protocols, so if there are any clues in the packets, I wouldn't see them. The most puzzling thing here is that it was working fine, and after seemingly nothing has changed, now it's not.
Mac OS X (10.4.3) macs on a PC networkIt looks like your getting an address okay. Have you tried out a variety of applications to see if it only happens on certain ones? (eg, web browser but not iTunes) If it's okay to run that at work, anyway
Some explanations of the gibberish below:
en0: That's the short name for your network card. If you have multiple cards or other manufacturers this can be different but it's fairly standard. There will also be another device called lo0 displayed usually. This is called a loopback device and points to you machine. It will have the address 127.0.0.1 It's a good way to test servers or other things running on your machine, by connecting to that address. It's not really useful in this case, but knowledge is power
The flags indicate what the status of the network card is. It's up, and running normally for most networks. The mtu setting indicates the size of packets of data transmitted by your network card. 1500 is fairly common, but some networks or ISPs may note a smaller size in their support pages. If no one has been monkeying with your network recently, assume this is okay.
inet6 is support for the eventual switch to a better internet addressing standard. nothing to worry about here.
inet 192.168.50.54 is you address on the local network. So you're getting an IP at least. If a Windows machine on the network has taken that address as well, that can cause problems. It shouldn't happen, but it does occasionally. The windows box will typically spit up a warning dialog on the screen pretty quickly if that happens. I haven't run into it on my mini yet so I'm not sure if Internet Connect will pop up the icon with the lightning symbol or nor.
The netmask is a hexidecimal number showing the range or "scope" that your subnet (the area of the network you're in) occupies. FFFFFF80 is equal to 255.255.255.128. In this case it means that your subnet is restricted to a range of 127 addresses. If your address and the address of your internet gateway weren't in that range together you'd have a problem, because they wouldn't recognize each other as being part of the same subnet.
But the broadcast address would indicate that they are. Both fit within the range of 192.168.50.1 and 192.168.50.127
If those machines couldn't see each other then instead of your 192.168.x.x address, you'd see the 169.x.x.x address I mentioned, and would be off the network.
So, now that you've been bombarded with all that, it looks like you're okay on the local network so now the task is finding out why you can't see out.
Try a few different apps and see if they succeed, like running the software update, etc. If they work, then it's possible your browsers may need to be configured to use a proxy server to get to the net. That's a lesson for later
Here's my ifconfig info:

finally get a Mac in a PC office and then it doesn't
work. -
Is there an ITS Mobile Test Server URL available on the Internet anywhere?
All,
I am pretty new to SAP, and have the requirement to prove a connection of my Windows CE5.0 terminal, using Naurtech CETerm 5.5.1. As such I was wondering if anyone out there knows of a test server URL that I could point my device to, to ensure it displays the screens correctly on the QVGA screen?
I am just looking for a test server URL on the web that I can test to. No transactions needed, even something as simple as a lnding page with some graphics would suffice.
Any help is appreciated at this point.
Many thanks in advance.
NickHi Nick,
if you can't find a test-URL on the Internet here you find instructions how to activate a test service on your SAP system

I have a direct connection to the internet and don't use a proxy server. Every few weeks, Firefox automatically resets itself to be configured to use a proxy server at the loopback address (127.0.0.1). Manually changing it back to "No proxy" works, but I have to do so each time I open the browser or even a new tab. The only fix I can find is to create a new profile which gives me a new, clean install of FF, but then I lose all my add-ons. This has happened repeatedly now and it's extremely frustrating. I have scanned for malware but have not found any problems.
hello rjlasser, first of all please make sure that none of your extensions is causing the issue (some youtube censorship circumvention addons also make use of proxies for example).
otherwise please refer to [[How to fix preferences that won't save]] for some common solutions. -
Make a VLANs talk to the internet
Hello all,
I need help making a Cisco router and Catalyst 3550 talk. I'm new with VLANs and such, in fact new to Cisco stuff in general. I've learned a bit and I learn quick.
Does anyone have any idea how I can connect my router to the internet, preferably managing multiple public IPs, and then connect those public IPs to the VLANs in the Catalyst 3550. Assume I am starting from a blank config on both router and switch. I have 2 Ethernet interfaces on the router. I'm trying to setup VLANs on the Catalyst, and do the routing on there.
I need the cisco router to handle my 5 public IP addresses. I think I can do that by assigning each public IP to fa0/1 having one as a primary and the other 4 as secondary. Then have fa0/0 connect to the Catalyst and have 5 subnets on there. I want to map each subnet (and subsequently LAN PCs or servers) to a specific public IP.
192.168.1.0 --> 96.xxx.xxx.170
192.168.2.0 --> 96.xxx.xxx.171 and so on.
Every time I have tried setting this type of configuration up nothing works properly. I know the equipment I have can do it, I'm just not sure how to achieve it. I know I've been close, yet not close enough obviously. I'm pulling my hair out!I must have been missing something critical in my router or switch config, but i couldn't see what it was. After butchering stuff badly many times I decided to start fresh on both, again. So, starting with blank slate, can anyone give me any ideas? Thanks in advance. This isn't really a complicated config that you need, it just needs great care in doing it. Things, especially access list need to be done in a given order.
On the router you will need to create route maps for each IP address that you want to use as well as an appropriate NAT translation for the route map. Once this is done you will also need to create access list that permit one subnet and deny others for a given public IP address. Lastly you will need to creat static routes or enable EIGRP/OSPF to build the appropriate routes back to each VLAN.
The switch config is simple create your VLANS and route them to the Cisco router. Personally I set assign a port on the switch that is a L3 port, the command is "no switchport", assign an IP address to the port that is in the same subnet as the router and connect the router to this port. However you can keep the port as a switchport as you wish.
I'll attach a couple of sample configs for you to review. Like I said it isn't really a difficult config it's just tedious.
In the attached sample config the first IP will be assigned to fa0/1, the others will be assigned to the route maps. Notice that in this sample config the VLAN addresses are segmented from 10.244.0.0/22, 10.24.40.0/24 & 10.13.13.0/30.
The permit lines in the access lists are the physical addresses that are permitted for a given IP address. -
can momebody tell me what to do to get connected to the internet?i just got an Ipad2 16gb,i have a strong WIFI signal.two other computer working in the house.
If you have what appears to be a strong signal, but it reports no Internet, then your router is not giving your iPad a connection and the iPad is self assigning an IP which falsely reports a strong signal. Go to Settings/Wi-Fi and tap the arrow to the right of the LAN to which your iPad says that it is connected. If the IP is 169... then you are not getting an IP from your router. Try resetting the router, updating the firmware or restoring it to factory settings. Some older routers do not like newer machines.

Hello.
I've done a bit of searching on Google and have come up empty so far and am looking for your help.
Here's my situation:
I have my iTunes media files stored on my NAS on my home network along with my Mac Mini Server with the iTunes library files stored in my Dropbox folder. While I'm at home I can access all of my files without any problems from either my Mac Mini Server or my Macbook Air; however, I recently moved to San Diego for work and would still like to access the media that's on my NAS at home remotely from my Macbook Air so I can sync my iPhone and watch movies.
Is this even possible? If so, how would I go about setting this up?
Thanks! The sessionstore.js file only exists while Firefox is closed. During shutdown, Firefox writes out that file based (I think) on recovery.js as of that point. When Firefox starts back up again, it reads sessionstore.js and deletes it. So if Firefox is running, it's normal not to see sessionstore.js. Anyway, sessionstore.js is going to be empty now.
Shadow Explorer might already have done this for you, but just in case...
You could try the previous versions feature. This is harder to get to on Windows 8 and 8.1, but I have read about a roundabout way. I can't test this myself, but here's what you do:
Let's say you have a Windows Explorer window open to your current Firefox profile folder. This is something like (with your username and semi-random profile folder name):
C:\Users\''username''\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\blahblah
Click in the address bar and change the C: to
\\localhost\c$
to yield (with your username and semi-random profile folder name)
\\localhost\c$\Users\''username''\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\blahblah
Press Enter to reload the folder contents that way.
Now when you right-click recovery.js, recovery.bak, backup.js or sessionstore.js and choose Properties, there should be a Previous Versions tab. Usually the most recent previous version dates back to the last time Windows created a restore point (e.g., system update or possibly scheduled on a more frequent basis). -
Windows Storage Server 2008 Backup over the internet
I have a client that uses Windows storage server 2008 Essentials and wants to backup his employees' laptops at his office to the storage server standing at his house. I have setup the network at his house with a public IP and can access remote
website for Storage server. I can even access the /connect site and download the connect software.
Then I setup a VPN tunnel to the network at his house so that the laptops at the office are on the same network as the storage server, this works and I can install the connect software when a laptop is on the VPN, meaning the connect software setup finds
the server and everything, but when I try to log in using the Launchpad or Dashboard on the laptop it says it can't find the server. How is this possible if I just installed and setup the connect software? Am I missing something here or can you point me in
the right direction. The laptops even show in the Dashboard when I remote desktop to the storage server and open the dashboard on the storage server.Hi,
The issue may be due to the NetNatTransitionConfiguration is overlapping the backup port (default to 8912). You could refer to the thread below to troubleshoot the issue:
