Should my macbook pro touchpad click on top?

Should my macbook pro touchpad click on the top left and right sides? It only clicks at the bottom.

System Preference  > Trackpad > Point & Click
If "Tap to Click" is enabled, click should register by tapping on any part of the Trackpad.

macbook pro touchpad curser problems.  typing randomly jumps to wherever the curser is resting at the time.  unbelievably maddening.  multiple devices same all have same problem.  hard to believe we cannot find anything on the apple site about this.  MANY complaints outside of this site on this issue... clearly a touchpad/battery design flaw being ignored by Cupertino.  during the writing of this post, the curser jumped randomly and started typing in a different location six times.  IMPOSSIBLE to use as a word processor since typing becomes quite frustrating.  HELP.  any ideas?  Fanboy and shareholder.  three macbook pros in the house...all the same problem. (please do not offer separate keyboard as solution...this is a laptop, not a Surface Pro...)

  • MacBook Pro touchpad works for multiple-fingered tapping options but not single-fingered tapping

My MacBook Pro touchpad only works when I use the two-fingered,three-fingered and four-fingered tapping functions but it doesn't work when I try to use the single tap function. I have done PRAM resets but it still doesn't work. Help!!!

I tried the above suggestions but it still doesn't work.
The whole left-click functionality has disappeared - I can't tap to click, use a usb mouse or click normally , and I'm wondering if it's anything to do with the hardware. Any more suggestions?

  • MacBook Pro Trackpad: Clicking problems

I have a MacBook Pro, (15 inch, Late 2008) and have always had fairly significant issues with the trackpad. It only registers clicks about half of the time. I have experimented with all the trackpad settings and "tap to click" also fails to register consistently. I usually have to press very hard, after the trackpad depresses for the click to register in the OS. I've continually experienced this problem in Leopard, Snow Leopard, and now Lion.
I've read that a lot of other people have had similiar issues with their trackpads over the last 3 years, but I've never heard about any fix or remedy. My trackpad does depress just fine, so I don't think that the trackpad screw would need to be adjusted at all. An external mouse registers clicks 100% of the time, so it isn't a software issue. I've heard that some people's ribbon that connects the trackpad could be loose, but I'm nervous to open it up and mess around with it.
I click with the side of my thumb--as most other people do. However clicking with my index finger also fails to register clicks, so I don't think it is a "accidental input" issue or a multitouch issue.
My girlfriend has the exact same model of Macbook Pro. Same year, same season, exact same specs. Her trackpad works perfectly.
I brought the computer to a Genius Bar, and the "Genius" said that it was just fine and somehow magically got it to register his clicks. I think maybe he had a sercret Magic Mouse under the table. I left bewildered and defeated.
Maybe I should just navigate via keyboard...

Don't worry about what the 'Genius' had to say most are just Apple grunts, slugging it out in the trenches.
If you are out of warranty / AppleCare then I would suggest finding an authorized independent Apple repair company. Go there, get a ridiculous quote (most likely) then ask around and find a local computer repair shop. Any place with "Apple Authorized" is basically like dealing with Apple.
You could also ask another 'Genius' or a 'Super Genius' (ie Manager.)
I promise you are not alone.
I have killed keyboards and trackpads with the following:
    - A glass of Merlot.
    - A glass of water
    - Another glass of water
    - A dog, knocking the laptop off the couch and to the floor.
I could continue, but seriously. Don't get up. The other option is to get a bluetooth mouse. Personally I love mine.

  • MacBook Pro Touchpad Sensitivity

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard 10.5.5. I was wondering if there is any way to adjust the touchpad sensitivity for one-finger clicking. At the moment I have to touch fairly hard in order to register a click. Is there a way to adjust how much pressure is required for the click to register?
I found an option to adjust sensitivity as it relates to dragging, but I couldn't find anything for clicking.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
A clarification of my last post:
The problem seems to be not with the sensitivity of the touchpad but with how much time the OS waits for another touch before registering the click. When I turn off dragging completely, one-touch clicks register almost immediately. I understand that there needs to be some delay when dragging is turned on in order to allow for double-clicks, but no matter what I set the Double-Click speed to, the delay seems excessive before a click will register.
    Thanks!

  • 2008 Macbook pro left click not working properly after upgrading to 10.6.8

I have a 2008 Macbook pro and a few months ago after upgrading to 10.6.8 my left click has been wonky.
Using the trackpad the left click eventually gets "stuck" or stops responding and I have to push it multiple times before it does anything.  I have tried plugging in a mouse, but when I do so the mouse also behaves the same way.  The only way I seem to be able to get the clicking to work properly is to restart the computer with the mouse attached.
I have seen threads about trackpads being messed up by swollen batteries, but my battery is brand new and looks fine, and the clicking problem extends to an external mouse, so I believe it is something with the preferences.
I tried deleting  com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouchTrackpad.plist   and restarting and the problem seemed to be fixed, but then after about a half hour it returned.
Having to keep a mouse plugged into my macbook is driving me crazy, anyone know a solution?

I started having the same issue after update.  I'm on a MacBookpro running 10.7.2
ICalled apple and they did a remove battery reboot, a reload lion and a option/command/R/P reboot on startup and then the computer started working.  Two days later problem was back.  I then did a reboot and the computer was back to working.  Today the computer worked fine tell it went to sleep.  I had to do a hard reboot to get the Mac up and running and now no left click.  Please help. I can not use the Mac  with the trackpad, a mouse, a Bluetooth mouse, or a digital pad. All so signs of left mouse click not working.  One other item when you go to pick your user at startup the left mouse click works.  Help!

  • MacBook Pro -Touchpad & Keyboard Frozen - Can't Unlock

After last using my 13" MacBook Pro, I closed the lid to put it into sleep mode.  When I opened it back up the next morning, I get the screen display, but both the touchpad and the keyboard are frozen.  I can't type in my password and thus can't fully awaken my unit.  My OS is fully up to date.
TIA for any and all tips.

    PROBLEM SOLVED:
First, understand that when it comes to Mac's, I'm still a real novice/noob, having been on the MS side of the house since ACSII days.  Yes, I have an iPhone and an iPad, but this is a little different.
I opened the lid and first tried Control+R to get to the IOS, which didn't work.  The MacBook went back to sleep.  I then woke it back up and immediately did what I presumed was a shutdown method only good on Windows machines: I pressed the ON/OFF switch and held it down, to force a shut down.
It worked! Computer shut down, I rebooted and all is well.  Thanks dominic, you started me thinking on some things, and I figured "well, why not, what's the worst that could happen?"

  • MacBook Pro Touchpad/Volume problem

Hello all, I've just upgraded to a MacBook Pro and Logic Pro 9 and I'm having some problems with track volumes changing when I swipe the touchpad accidentally. Does anyone know how to turn that function off?
    Thanks in advance!

Hey, thanks for the interest Jazzhead! I'll try and explain it a bit better here. So when I'm in the normal arrange view, you know how there are two channel strips along the left hand side? The track you have selected, plus the output track. Well when I'm trying to move my cursor around or zoom in/out using the trackpad in the arrange portion of the screen, sometimes what I'm doing with my fingers changes the volume on those channel strips. If I have a full mixer up, it will effect some of those channel volumes all though that is less of a problem. It's just really annoying when you go and zoom out of the session using the track pad, and you accidentally put the 1/2 Output to +6dB and not even realize it.
    Thanks again,
    Cam

  • Macbook Pro mouse click delay on 10.6.4 start-up

Just installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and found that while the track pad will move the cursor around the screen, you can not select (click) on anything for the first 3 or 4 minutes after start-up. Updated to 10.6.4 and have the same trouble. Plug in a single button USB apple mouse and still the same trouble. Anyone else having this glitch??? I have a Macbook Pro 17", 2.33 Ghz, 2 Gig of SDRam. Is it a firmware problem?? I'm ready to wipe the drive and do a clean install, but that seems to be a lot of work for something that is annoying but not a devastating problem. Other than that it seems to be a great OS.
    Help!!!

Since I posted I have done several things... reset Pram, repaired disk (there were minor problems) repaired permissions (again minor problems and all were fixed... and both were done booted from the Snow Leopard install disk). On restart the same problem persists, and after checking, there is no keyboard input either. (hadn't checked that before) also on last boot from full shutdown, time from button push to full desktop... 3 minutes 42 seconds... time from full desktop to working mouse click 4 minutes 13 seconds.... That's almost 8 minutes from a cold laptop to a working machine...
Think a disk wipe and clean reinstall would help this??

  • Should using MacBook Pro really be this difficult???

Here's my question - should I return this Mac and just buy something else or should I attempt to continue to go ahead with using this brand new Mac I just purchased?
I'm really not happy with Apple's new MacBookPro and as much as I hate PCs, I'm just thinking that they might be the lesser of the evil here. I have had such an incredibly difficult time with this brand new Mac and it has been such a nightmarish experience trying to use it, I really have to ask that question here. I have just sent the thing off to a technician for an hourly fee to try and get it up and running. He got some things going at my studio but others were appearing to take so long, we decided it best for him to take it to his shop to work on it.
I've had out of the box 1 nightmare after another trying to get going with it. Compared to my past experience with my Powerbook and other Macs, this has really just blown me and my hopes about working on my new Mac out of the water and I've had so many problems with it, I have just not been able to figure out where to post for help here.
It took 3 hours with my ISP on the phone to get my email and internet connection up and running (was automatic with my old Powerbook), the new MBP couldn't talk to the printer (old PB connected to printer using wireless via the printer being on appletalk talking to modem via ethernet, wireless router allowed the wireless connection and the PB never had a problem with this), scanner worked once and never again, mouse lost its settings (mouse purchased at Apple store), iWork application suite I purchased from Apple and ordered to be installed on the new Mac - this stuff required entering s/n number (which I was told was supposed to have been done when the software was installed - had to go get box and find disks, etc.), web sites were incredibly slow to load and pages would hang... and apparently there were a lot of updates to all of the required software from Apple that had not been put on the machine yet.
The technician I hired will be charging around $200 to get the computer up and running and working with everything. Would ProCare have been able to do this? Probably not unless I brought in printer, router, modem, and scanner to the store - or am I mistaken on this? How would Apple's care have been able to have supported me here?
Should I return the Mac altogether given the depth and amount of problems I'm having doing anything? Would an iMac have been better? Should I just give up on Macs now with this new OS and Intel chip?
Even having now to spend this additional money, I'm VERY worried that I will end up then having to spend even more money for some other problem that may arise after this given this auspicious start. I'm really really worried that MacBook Pro is just not very dependable at least in comparison to the PowerBook I had and loved for the past several years. What do you think? What's your experience?

Yes. I think you're right about this.
But I'm not at all new to Macs and used to myself work for Apple as part of the design folks. The experience I'm having right now is NOT the norm with Macs... AT ALL. Apple has been a leader if not THEE leader in usability where computers are concerned and they have been since their birth. Many many many $ and time at least used to be spent in targeting specific usability metrics. I firmly believe that what has happened here is a combo of your observation along WITH what has happened here and there in the past at Apple - the usability group/s demonstrate a clear need and solution for problems such as I'm having (I know - I've witnessed this). Decision makers or 1 decision maker at a higher level "rules" out the proposed solution. The consequences are errors and problems that you can read throughout the entire discussion board here - various problems people have are not necessarily because a solution has not been proposed, found, known, and pushed forward at Apple but is because someone/s rule out that solution being executed... the time/money business.
The group, when I was in it, would have been livid and fired up had they seen what I have just been through trying to get going with this new Mac ...and I am no stranger to Macs and am not a new user and know my way around a Mac a lot more than most users.
It has now been 2 weeks that I've had my new Mac and I've not been able to do anything with it due to the enormous problems. I hired a former genius bar guy who has gone out on his own to see what he can do. Unfortunately, the genius bar at the Apple store can't come to me (and I can't bring printer, scanner, router, modem down to the store with the computer - even harder for me since I'm disabled) so I hired this guy to come to me and see what he could do. There were so many problems with the thing, he has taken the computer back to his shop where he's going to find out whether the box is simply a bum Mac from the get go or whether it just needs a lot more tweaking and configuring than was led to have been the case from the outset.
Some helpful info from him to keep in mind - I got my new Mac online from the Apple store here. He told me that actual human beings are preparing these Macs before they go out to customers. The preparation of the boxes can vary depending upon the experience of whoever is preparing one's new Mac. If the guy/gal was fairly new and didn't now all that much... he was saying you don't know if everything that was supposed to be updated at that time or included or checked GOT checked or included. He told me, for example, s/n number for software I purchased that I ordered them to install at the factory SHOULD have been entered already allowing me to get up and running immediately upon launching the software.
Also he told me - there are a lot of folks here, as we can all imagine, who purport to be very expert and sound good but he told me there is a plethora of just plain false information and incorrect info all over these boards. For example, when I first posted with problems here, I was told the Migration Assistant doesn't work to migrate stuff from non-Intel-based Macs to Intel based Macs. He told me that is absolutely BS and he has used MA to do that very thing. He told me if there were a problem, it's due to other stuff... example, not ALL software on the computer (either one) have been updated or updates weren't completed or there was a glitch in an update or there is a low level problem that wasn't sussed out (in my case, for example, the FIRST thing he did was run DUtility on the SOURCE computer and repair ANYthing or any naming or any problem whatsoever on the HFS there... this is before doing ANYthing). Ok, not a single person here mentioned starting with that before even touching the new computer. This is why I really tend to believe those genius bar guys/gals that there is an unfortunate amount of mis-information here on these boards that is even more unfortunately passed off by the poster (not by Apple) as being all knowing and authoritative. And myself having worked for Apple, I also know (going back to your original post here) that usability and the design history at Apple is quite different than your current understanding and expectation of Macs. You need to raise the bar you've been using now that you're using a Mac. That's what the Mac is all about - usability. It is the primary way Apple has become a leader in everything it touches and its why long time users like myself are really shocked and affected when the user experience is as poor as its become for me.
I WILL be taking this up with members of CHI because it really needs to be discussed and addressed. Have we lowered the bar. For Mac users, Mandy, it was NOT always as you have accepted it to be.

    Hi

shoot down and strt again boot in OS an thw track pad make zoom in scroll and right click make windows open
the keyboard not work but i have sount from button and backlight keyboard button

Sounds like you may have an issue with a stuck key on your keyboard, or maybe you're inadvertently performing a multitouch gesture.
First thing I'd try, is going to the trackpad settings and turning off multitouch gestures, even if just temporarily. Do things work as expected with that disabled? If yes, look through the different gestures and try to figure out which one you must be triggering. If not, I'd take it back to wherever you had it repaired, and get them to take a look at it. It sounds a bit like the keyboard is sending a constant signal from the "Option" key.

  • Raised MacBook Pro Touchpad - Bottom Left

    Hello there!
So I returned from my month holiday in Thailand to open my macbook to see that the bottom left corner is raised and is stiff and doesn't respond to clicks, see picture here: http://sphotos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/66538_10151248776229841_64962021_n .jpg
This is a mid2010 MacBook Pro, 15", I bought it 2 months ago second hand.
    What can I do?
    thanks, Alex!

    Hi HerbRoller420,
i would just liked to know how you fixed this issue , cause i seem to be in the exact situation.
I just came back from a 6 week Holiday today and when i got back, the trackpad was uneven, and raised at the bottom left corner. It looks exactly like the picture you posted. It's an early 2011 Macbook Pro , 13inches. And i bought it second-hand, mid last year (2013).
Please tell me how you solved your problem, cause i seem to be in a very very similar situation.
    Thanks, Imesha

  • How long should a MacBook Pro take to start up?

I purchased my MacBook Pro 11 mo ago, at the beginning it would take about 30 secs to start up, now it takes almost a minute (the same as my old Dell computer) the only program I have installed is Microsoft office, the mac computers at work take about 30 secs to start up.
I probably don't have more than 10 word files in "my documents" and no more than 500 photos, which I think is nothing compared to ALL the information I have in the computer at work
is it normal to take 1 minute to start up? What should I do in order to make the start up faster?
It annoys me that it takes almost the same as my old Dell computer
    Thanks

Mountain Lion has a annoying feature it loads the last used programs when you log in.
So disable that, there are various hacks on this thread
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3244852?start=30&tstart=0
See if that improves your boot time and if not, then do the #12/#13 OnyC cache cleaning routine here and reboot when finished.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
If that doesn't solve it, investigate your Office verison is compatible with your OS X version
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Uninstall it and see if the boot time resumes normally, or update it or run further through the Steps.
    Why is my computer slow?
The Mac's at work, are they running 10.7 or later? Or the fast and speedy 10.6

  • Why does my MacBook Pro make clicking noises when pressure is applied to the unibody?

I purchased a MacBook Pro in late July of this year. Recently, I have noticed that when I begin to type on the keyboard, the unibody will make a faint sound when pressure from my hands is applied to the MacBook. I also notice a faint clicking noise when I pick up the MacBook Pro to move it somewhere. Additionally, the screen hinge makes a faint clicking noise when the screen is opened. Are these sounds normal?

Check if an AASP (Apple Authorised Service Provider) is closer, as some do not trust Geek Squad to diagnose something as simple as "all the keys are missing". But judge for yourself.: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434
