Should one turn OFF a MacBook, or let SLEEP at night?

A friend just bought a MacBook. I have a PowerBook G4... I was told to turn it off at night... my friend has been keeping his new MacBook on SLEEP at night...
I hear too much SLEEP can goof up the computer sometimes running programs, and I hear turning the computer OFF more prone to breaking down sooner than later.
What's the right thing to do - and why?
Thanks in advance...

There probably is no really right or wrong answer to your question. Mac OS X is very happy sleeping and waking when you're not using it. It does not really need to be restarted every day. (You might visit hitup.org where you'll find some people have been running Mac OS X without restarting for more than 1,000 days.)
Personally, I have not shut down or restarted any of my Apple laptops that were running Mac OS X for the last five years, except for system updates. However, the "cron scripts" that do some maintenance over night do not all run if your computer is asleep. Some will run when you wake the computer back up. But, it's easy to run them yourself manually with the Terminal or with a third-party utility.

    Hi there nina777s,
You may want to try resetting the PRAM and SMC on your Mac as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • Should I turn off my Mac Pro when not in use or leave it running?

I have been told I should never turn off my computer by some people, and others say that I should always turn it off when not in use!  I use my Mac Pro primarily for music recording/editing in my home studio or word processing.  Now that I have an iPad I use that for web browsing, email, FBing, etc. and I find myself on my Mac Pro a lot less.  I get the basis behind both trains of thought; those who leave it on feel always stopping and starting up puts unnecessary wear on the moving disks, and those who shut down think if the parts are always moving they are bound to wear out faster.  I am not as concerned with conserving power as I am with keeping my machine safe!  If you have any information on this topic I would love to hear it. Thanks!

Providing you have a robust firewal and are not worried as a result about being hacked then leave it turned on and allow it to sleep. Make sure you allow the screen to sleep as well a that is the item that is more prone to damage by being left on all the time.
I never turn my machine off, never have with any of my Macs ever since my first one back in 1979-ish and have never suffered any adverse affects. Today, the power drain is so small when allowed to sleep that I doubt they would offend even the ardent 'turn off everything and pull out the plug to save the planet' person.
If you have an iPad or iPod synced with the Mac for email and iCal and address Book etc. then if you leave it on it should be up to date as soon as you return home, mine is anyway. With iCloud coming out very soon that may come into play even more so with all its advance pushing etc. Just a thought.
One advantage in leaving the machine on (sleep) is that you can access it from anywhere in the world should the need arise with the appropriate settings, which you can't if you turn it off.
    Leave it on.

  • How does one turn off the appletv

How does one turn off an Apple tv?  I think it's 3d generation.

If you are at the top level "Home" page, press and hold the Pause Button and AppleTV will shut off after a few seconds.
If you are not yet at the Home page, you can repeatedly press the Menu button to move back up there, or even better press and hold the Menu button to jump back to the Home page no matter how deeply down you've burrowed.
I find it satifying to turn it off when I walk away, but don't know if there's any real advantage compared to just letting it time out as suggested by Kappy.

  • Cant turn off my macbook

    Help required :-)
I cant seem to turn off my macbook and restart it.
I have a problem with macmail so have loaded thunerbird while i figure it out and today i have had a pop up which says that I cant load mail - BUT that little multi coloured sphere is spinning round (for hours now). I have tried to turn off and restart but it just wont do it.
Any tips before I just take out the power source and let the battery run dry??
    Thanks

It certainly sounds like it's hung up.
If you're just looking to power-cycle it, there are several options beyond waiting for the battery to drain. The easiest is to press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds. This will shut down the machine, then you can reboot and try again.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • How does one turn off link auto-update?

When we have an ID file open in CS6 and make a Photoshop edit, the link seems to auto-update. We don't like this as we'd rather 'watch' the update so if comes in as expected, etc.. Can one turn off link auto-update? Thanks!

Are you making the edit by selecting the graphic frame and then choosing Edit Original? This will always auto-update.
If that's not it, you might try clicking Preferences > General > Reset All Warning Dialogs

  • Is it ok to turn off my macbook pro 2011

I would like to know if its ok to turn off my macbook pro 2011 every time its not in use , and its not connect to a power source .

It's ok to turn off your macbook if you're not using it for a period of time.  Just make sure the battery is not fully discharged when you do so.
I turn my off when i know i won't be using it for the day.
You can however, just close your lid if you plan on using your macbook a few hours later.

How does one turn OFF ripple editing in PE8?
    Thanks,
    Chris Elkins

There is not ON/OFF toggle for Ripple Edit. It is ON, by default and design.
However, it is easy to change it to Insert Edit, by holding down the Ctrl modifyer key.
Good luck, and hope that this gets you what you want.

  • Should I turn off my computer when I go om vacation?

should I turn off my desktop when I go on vacation, in the event ther is a thunderstorm?

Yes, turn it off.  I also agree that computers should be turned off when you are "done" for the day.  I have aquantainces that do not ever turn them off.  Their computers never seem to last a long.  My last computer at the office lasted over six years and was fine until space on the HD and memory became an issue.  My last Home Computer was almost a teenager before it was replaced.  If fact I just recently gave away my old Packard-Bell computer (Windows 95) and it still worked!  I do still have my Heath-Zenith (Cost $ 3000.00 new! With Zenith-DOS.)  -Have a good vacation!
