Should Safari run as fast on a wireless network as my imac does?

I appear to be connected to my airport network but it seems as slow as dial-up.

I doubt it. The main reason is that your iMac has a nice big processor (maybe 1.8GhZ or more). The iPhone has a processor that is only 700MhZ (which is still really big for a cell phone).
I would say that no, it should not run quite as fast, although it should not be painfully slow either.
I hope this helps!

try disabling email scanning for incoming mail.
One of the last things that occurs is the mail server and Thunderbird sign off on "where we are up to" and Thunderbird stores this state information in the popstate.dat file in your profile (there is one in each POP mail account folder). If the anti virus, or you for that matter, end the conversation a few seconds early that hand off does not occur and the popstate is not stored.

You need to turn on Printer Sharing on both the PC and OS X. I can't help you on Vista but in OS X it's System Preferences - Sharing - check the Printer Sharing box.

Replace the Time Capsule with one that has a larger hard drive. Or erase the one you have and start a new set of backups or backup one of the computers to a different backup drive.

  • Safari crashes when opened on a wireless network

Since applying the latest system updates, Safari now crashes as soon as it is opened if the Mac is connected to a wireless network. Hard-wired (ethernet) connections seem to be presenting no problems. Here is the latest crash report: any help gratefully received!

    Hi,
Try running Onyx using the settings shown on this page:
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/onyx_leopard.html
Parts of the crashed thread refer to cached networking access, so when Onyx clears out those caches it might improve things.
    Good luck!

  • Airport "forgetting" my wireless network with CD2 iMac

I never had this problem with my Core Duo iMac, but now with a Core Duo 2, I have to manually enter my home wireless network periodically after waking the computer from sleep. Is there any way to "save" a network?

    Try this:
If you use "Preferred Networks," instead of "Automatic" for your "By default, join" setting, try the following:
    - Delete all preferred networks with encryption
    - Add them again after manually connecting
It will be faster if you turn on "Automatically add new networks to preferred networks list" under "Options" of the AirPort network connection.

  • How can i set up a wireless network from my iMac lion, with a windows 7??

I wish to setup a network from my iMac to my gf windows 7 laptop, but can't figure out how...

In order to do this you should have a router. Once you have a router and both computers on the network then you will need to turn on File Sharing on the Mac. You can locate Sharing in System Preferences - Sharing. On the PC it has a similar function but typical of MS Windows much more arcane and complex. First thing you will need to know is what version of MS Windows you have, then you can Google something like "File sharing OS X Lion with Windows 7" and you will find lots of instructions.

  • Wireless networking problems using iMac, Macbook, airport extreme & express

    Here's my setup:
iMac in study has 100+ gigs of music on an attached hard drive
    iMac running 10.5.8
    Airport extreme in study
Macbook in living room that I use Itunes to connect to hard drive in study
    Macbook running
iTunes on Macbook has it's Media Folder as the one that's on the hard drive in the study.
Airport express in living room, with direct connection to stereo
To play music on the stereo, I prefer to use the Macbook to connect to the iMac/hard drive in the study, as I don't want to keep walking into the study to change music.
Once I get a connection it's usually ok, but the problem is in getting a stable connection in the first place. Sometimes I have to go through a rigmarole where I turn off all the computers and then turn on iMac, hard drive, Macbook, before connecting to the iMac wirelessly before playing music. Sometimes I might need to do that twice before it works.
If I don't, I get the message in iTunes on the Macbook: Connection failed - The server "macintosh-2" may not esist or is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection and try again.
Sometimes I'll have access to most songs, but a certain few will get the message above.
Is my setup the thing that's causing this 'slippery' network connection?
I'm wondering whether my hard drive isn't fast enough - it's a no-name brand which I got cheaply about 5 years ago. Maybe it's just not up to it? Or is it the fact one puter's on Tiger, one's on Leopard?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

have you checked for _*wireless interference*_ ?
download iStumbler (may not work on 10.6) or AirRadar (it has a trial period) and note the channels other networks in your vicinity are broadcasting on. change the channel(s) of your network as far away as possible from those.
    any improvement ?

possible but i doubt it. in my iTunes test environment, i have a cheap USB drive connected to my TC. iTunes fetches tunes from it via the network, then streams the music back via the network. i have no issues streaming even HD movies in the 10 gig range.
i assume the extreme is your main router ? what you can try is hardwire as much as possible, i.e. run ethernet cables from the extreme to all Macs. if physical cables is no option (due to location), you might consider *powerline adapters* _*such as these*_.
here's an interesting read on the subject.
Or is it the fact one puter's on Tiger, one's on Leopard?
as long as all Macs are current on the software side, it shouldn't matter.

  • I am FRUSTRATED! My goal is to create a wireless network using an iMac, a Westell 2100 modem (and router)

I started with a PC, the Westell 2100 modem (also a router) and the Linksys WRT54G. I set it up according to instructions I found on the Internet, and it worked fine for YEARS!!! Then, I switched to an iMac. After problems with the setup, I found help on the Internet, and got it working. It has been a long time since then, and I have had to disconnect things, and I do not remember how to set it up. I have searched the Internet, but cannot find a solution. I have searched the community, and followed some instructions here, but I have had no success. I know the following:
The Westell 2100 works as it should. I can connect directly to my computer and access the Internet.

  • Firefox worked on my laptop in UK, but here in USA, it does not work on my Brighthouse Wireless Network, but Internet explorer does. What setting do I ned to change?

As above, I have also tried downloading a later version, also tried downloading Google Chrome, none work. I have tried using my laptop at several different wifi connections in USA and Firefox does not work on any. So it is not a wifi set up problem in our home in USA. I am running X.P and I.E 6. When I downloaded I.E 8 that would not work either, so I had to re set the laptop back to a date a week ago.
Unable to access certain bank sites with I.E 6, that is why I use Firefox. Any suggestions appreciated.
This is the message I get

  • MacBook Pro will not connect to Cisco Wireless Network

I have just bought a brand new MacBook Pro, running Leopard (OSX 10.5.1) and I just cannot get it to connect to the Wireless Network at my workplace.
The MBP connects to wireless network and authenticates just fine, but will not obtain an IP address from the DHCP server.
The wireless network consists of 16 Cisco Aironet 1200 Access Points controlled by a Cisco Wireless Network Controller. It does not broadcast its SSID and is WEP 128-bit hex protected.
Changing the network from WEP to WPA is out of the question for me as this is under the control of my customers IT Department and they do not have any problems with their PCs connecting to the network. It appears to be an Apple issue.
For reference, my old Vaio PC, my Nokia N95 and my iPod Touch ALL connect to the same wireless network without any problems whatsoever, first time, every time!
If I boot into Windows XP from my Boot Camp partition, XP can connect wirelessly to the network without any problems, so it is not MacBook hardware related...
It has to be a bug in Mac OSX... doesn't it?!?
Things I have already tried (following suggestions on many forums):
    * Switching Airport off/on
    * Deleting various network-related Plist files and rebooting
    * Manually assigning an IP Address (not really permitted but doesn't work anyway!)
    * Disabling all network adaptors except Airport
AP Grapher shows that the MBP is connected to the wireless network, at good strength, and packets are being sent and received, but Internet Access is not possible as no IP Address has been assigned. Instead, my MBP shows a 169.* IP Address (self-assigned). It should be a 10.1.255.* address.
Can anybody please help? Thank you.

i posted this same reply elsewhere because it worked for me for my Buffalo wireless router: try manually setting your IP address instead of relying on DHCP, which sometimes (I don't know why) doesn't work well with Macs. It's a good get around. I am a happy Mac user but nothing is perfect on earth, and when the Mac gives problems, it does give a lot of frustration. Macs are not as easy to troubleshoot as Win because a Mac is built to be user friendly(and it works most of the time), meaning a lot of the background computing stuff is hidden away from users to avoid user accidentally upsetting some settings.
Unfortunately, the highly automated troubleshooting wizards provided by OS X are not perfect so when these software wizards fail to resolve the problem, like my Network Diagnostics, I have to spend more time tinkering around. There's "Terminal" of course but then most of us, especially PC converts to Macs, don't know how to use it.
You should also try updating your MBP, see if there are any new updates being released.

  • Major Wireless Networking Issues

I recently moved into a new apartment and we are having wireless networking difficulties. It is a large apartment and we initially only had a Buffalo WHR-G125 (flashed with DD-WRT firmware and running with transmit power boosted) for the whole apartment (1700 sq ft - 3 bedrooms - many walls). Most of the apartment received decent signal but my room in the corner was extremely weak. My new HP (don't hate me its for school) got a poor signal and my Apple MacBook Pro basically got nothing.
I purchased an Airport Express N to act as a range expander but we had some issues with the WDS. Eventually we set up a subnetwork but it stil didn't really solve the issue. I am pretty much at wits end with the situation and I am considering purchasing an Apple Airport (but I am a poor student). Please let me know if you think that will solve the problem or if you have any other suggestions.
I also considered hiring an electrician to run an ethernet port to my room but that is also an expensive option. Please bear in mind that the router can only be in the living room or the farthest room from mine (so moving it into my room isn't an option). Thanks for your help.

    2 options:
Connect another Airport to the router using an ethernet cable. Place the existing Airport halfway between the router and your computer. You should be able to create a new wireless network, but share the router's internet connection.
Run an ethernet cable from the router halfway to your room, and fit the Airport there. You don't really need an electrician to do this, buy a long cable with the plugs fitted - any decent computer shop can make a cable for you - then just drill holes through any walls that get in the way.
Connecting an Airport base station wirelessly to a non-Apple wireless router can be a real problem, that's why I suggest using a cable.

  • USB network dongle for wireless networking

    Hi all
Just a quickie, I've just bought a mini, not wireless, thought I'd put an extreme card in it, but it's not to be, the wireless option is a rip off in the UK as a retrofit.
Has anyone managed to use a USB network wireless dongle?
I have seen a couple for sale on ebay, but I'm not sure about drivers etc?
    tia
    wilse

    Hi wilse,
    Few things that you might like to consider from my personal experience;
First, I guess, is if you can afford an airport card then its definately the best option without any shadow of a doubt (even if you fit it yourself - The Airport i user installable on virtually everything else and is very straight forward), I have a 12in iBook G4 (800) which i got Airport extreme for and it's constantly reliable and always fast.
Second, if you plump for the USB option I run a D-link Dwl-122 wireless adapter sticking out of my Powermac G4 450x2 which has been notorious for its poor driver support in the past but with the latest driver (From MacUpdate: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15997) I have no problems running it through the front pannel USB2 slots from a PCI card (i only say this as these are also notoriously difficult in old G4s but they're now happy together). I get a good reception on this card from 3 storeys away in a very high ceilinged Georgian house.
Thirdly, my mum also runs one the same USB wireless adapters on an iMac (flat panel USB1.1 from sometime in 2003) with the no problems with the driver above. The Dwl-122 is only wireless .b though so can only get connected at up to 11mps.
Fourthly (?), if i could put Airport Extreme cards in both of those Macs i would at whatever cost because its still annoying having bits stinking out in my opinion even if you are lucky enough to get a USB adapter with no conflics with your system setup (unfortunately nether are compatable with the AEX and Airport cards now go for upwards of £70 on ebay!!)
I hope all that helped somehow, as you can probably see i've spent many an hour battling with third party drivers for external devices, well done for having the foresight to ask first!!! I wish i had!
Anyway good luck with your decision and i hope you get a few more posts here before you make up your mind...

  • I have my HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 A connected to my Mac Book Pro on a Wireless network. It works and

I have my Hp Officejet Pro 8500 A connected to my MAc Book Pro which is running Lion OS on a wireless network.  It works just fine and prints and everything.  The problem is a "HP Utility" window that pops up on my screen and says it is "connecting to device" and lists my printer.  It just runs and runs and the entire thing is gray - meaning I can't close it, cancel it, or anything. When you try to click on it, the arrow becomes the color wheel of death.   It is driving me crazy.  I have gone through settings, I have downloaded the latest drivers, I have looked in utilities, I have opened the printer folder and can't find where this thing is coming from or how to turn it off.  Please help.  And yes I have turned offf the computer and rebooted.

If you are using Snow Leopard or Lion and have HP software for pre-Snow Leopard (either from a CD not marked as compatible with 10.6 or you recently upgraded to Snow Leopard or Lion and had the HP software on your Mac before you upgraded - even if you did a standard uninstall of the old software or installed new software over the top of it) you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
    Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Press and hold Control + Alt + Cmd keys on the keyboard simultaneously while you click on Uninstall <<<< This IS the Scrubber Option, there is no button labeled "Scrubber"
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
    Restart your Mac
    Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
    Now reset the printing system:
    - Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
    - Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
    - Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.
If you want more features, you can download and install the Full Featured software from the "Support & Drivers" button at the top of this page, otherwise, basic printing and scanning will work without it.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.
