Should Software Update Take a Few Days?

Hi!
I am a proud new MacBook Owner and recent Windows switch. So I am still trying to figure out the new Mac World. On Wed. I started my laptop, and updated all of my software. Today (Sunday) My Software Updater is still running and the progress bar reads: Installing: Finishing installation with the blue bar about 3/4 done, not moving since about Thursday. If anyone could give me guidance and assistance of how to complete my software update it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!

I think you should just restart ur computer and try again.

If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.<br />
You may need to remove the Firefox program folder to do a clean install of the new version.
Do a clean (re-)install:

Installing Yosemite will take 30 to 40 minutes or so.
Incremental updates occur considerably faster than that, but they also require the same two parts: downloading and installing.

I thought i could use my old airport extreme and attach an external HD and set up a network to do just this. At work we alll use pc's. How can i make this work? Yes, you can use either the 802.11g or 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) to attach an external USB HDD for file sharing. Either AEBS model would allow you to share out this HDD to either Macs or PCs. From the PC, the shared HDD would appear as a network drive which you can map via Windows Explorer.

Software update takes about 2 minutes which is much longer than usual

my dsl connection has recently slowed to a crawl. It seemed to have happened right after I did a software update which took about 5 times longer to complete. i should be getting about 4.75 Mmbs but am only getting .54Mmbs. Any suggestions? iMac 3.2 Ghz Intel Core3 4 GB. Thanks.

Keyboard and screen scrolling freezing up after software update approx. 30 days ago.

2 year old 16GB IPad (Model MD522LL/A) Recently (last 30 days) installed recommended software update (sorry do not recall number of update). Now having problem with keyboard freezing when messaging as well as screen freezing when scrolling. Can sometimes be temporarily resolved by rebooting (turning off, waiting 3 to 5 minutes and restarting).

Unfortunately, resetting the PRAM and NVRAM didn't work. Will a reinstallation of OS X make a difference, bearing in mind I've already restored from a Time Machine backup? (I don't know if those clone everything or don't include system files).

Can anyone supply a reasonable, legitimate reason why the purchase of an OS X update requires 1-3 days to receive the download code? Even M$ does a better job than that. The official line from support is that it takes that long to "work through the system." Why not keep Lion in the App Store, and make sure it can only be downloaded after redeeming a code, or paying for the update?
And BTW, for you Apple employees that may be reading this ... even M$ doesn't charge for service packs and updates to the OS. If you're gonna demand more cash when you change the OS animal at least change the version -- not the revision.

This is a user to user tech forum. Apple is not here. Apple does not answer here.

It's on the server, it just doesn't show in the store. Same difference. Apple only sells publicly the most recent version of OS X. You must make private arrangements with Apple to buy older versions of OS X. You are buying the code for Lion from a different part of Apple than the Mac App Store, so yes, it must work it's way through the system.

Apple doesn't either. Updates are free for point increment updates of versions of OS X (such as OS X Mt Lion 10.8.1 to 10.8.2.) Apple only charges for major paid upgrades (such as OS X Lion 10.7.X to OS X Mt Lion 10.8.X) When someone buys OS X from the MAS, they are sold the most recent point increment available.

It shouldn't take that amount of time. What is the screen showing? Is the progress bar frozen? The only solution would be to restart your Mac, but it's better to first check what your screen is showing

I just go the latest version of iTunes and I got a large number of old unwanted files "in the cloud" that I cannot delete unless I load all all of them, which should take a few days. Is this a bug in the latest version? I should never upgrade right away;

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)
