Should superseded software updates EVER be kept?

We've got a big controversy going on about whether or not to keep superseded software updates. Seems to some, they should be immediately removed (we're using SCCM 2007), yet others state we should never remove.
What's best practice and why, and if we ever SHOULD keep them, why and how to determine?

In SCCM 2007 it works like this; Superseded updates are immediately "Expired" by
SCCM UNLESS they are superseded by a
Service Pack. Updates that are superseded by a Service Pack will never expire, unless of course if
Microsoft expires them via WSUS metadata.
So, superseded updates that are not expired (yellow icon) should be deployed as long as the Service Pack is not. For each update with the yellow icon
you must check under the "Supersedence Information"- tab to determine which Service Pack that is superseding the update. When that Service Pack is deployed and installed on all machines, you can safely delete the update.

This featue is only available on iphone running ios 5 or later.
Update as you always have, via itunes.

SUP: How to deploy superseded Software Updates?

Hey,
so, we are deploying Security Updates via Software Update Point in a planned schedule and we have to "announce" the updates to be installed.
Now i accidently synchronized the update point and some of the updates have been superseded. Is there any way for us to deploy those superseded updates anyway?

I'll give another example. IE11 Enterprise Mode. (KB2929437)
We have just started our pilot to upgrade from IE8 to IE11 on Windows 7.
(Yes, we have to be on Windows 7. Please don't argue this point)
The KB that added Enterprise mode to IE11 (KB2929437) was the cumulative update for IE in April 2014. This has been superseded multiple time now, and even though it still exists in WSUS on the SUP, it refuses to show in SCCM). Without that KB, we cannot
go any further without manually updating thousands of PCs that already had 11 deployed. “All future security and nonsecurity updates for Internet Explorer 11 require you to have update
2929437 installed in order to receive updates. “ I realize we can make a one-off standard deployment package rather than use Software Updates, but why should we have to?

Should the Software update website be country awar...

It goes against the grain a little, but if there is a risk that people updating thier handsets from outside the UK are losing languages etc...
Maybe the Nokia site should only allow access to PCs connecting to the internet within the UK.

This is rubbish. There are million of people "out there" that may live in country x or country y (x,y =not UK), they have operator free phones and can very happily live with an English version also.
Maybe the improvement suggestion is that when the update begins and the updater does not have the current phone language available, it will give the user a choice to cancel or accept the English version.
I donät have English, I updated, got my original language with update to phone, very happy-happy about that. However, if the updater would have said that there is English only available, do you still update, I would say "yes", without a question.
And I live no were close to UK

Software Update not finding missing loops

I've just updated my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.8) from iLife 09 to iLife 11.
In Garageband most of the loops are missing (greyed out). When I click on one I'm given the option of downloading later or now. When I choose 'now' it opens Software Update which searches for updates and tells me that all my software is up to date. If I click on a missing look again the message says that the software instrument or Apple Loop is currently being installed and that I should open Software Update for additional information.
How do I install all the missing loops if Software Update is telling me all my programs are up to date?

HT4623 What happens if the Software Update option is not there in the General Settings?

When downloading Apps on to my iPad it tells me that I require iOS 5 or higher, and yet there is no facility I can find to upgrade the iOS.
There should be Software update option in General Settings but there isn't, and there doesn't appear to be a download facility in iTunes either.
Rather confused?

Where do I go to get software updates for my wireless printer hp 4620 series

I have a wireless printer hp 4620 series. It came with an installer cd that only allows use of OS X , Mountain Lion, and Lion. My system is OS Yosemite. The cd told me that the installation was not recommended and I should get software update from Apple. but did not give me a link as to where I could go. Please help! I need to re-establish my wireless connection between my Apple and my printer. ASAP.

It should print with old drivers but you need the updated drivers for scanning.

Reactivate expired Software updates

We currently had a lot of superseeded updates, which were normally deployed to our clients. We currently patch 3 times a year in our company. The last time was around september. Now the superseeded updates turned to expire, due the Supersedence rule / Superdence
behavior configured in the Software Update Point Component Properties.
Is it possible to reactive / reenable the expired update until we patch our clients again with the newest updates? Currently the expired updates don't get deployed, which i think is normal behavior...

Typically, a software update that supersedes another software update does one or more of the following:
1. Enhances, improves, or adds to the fix provided by one or more previously released updates.
2. Improves the efficiency of its update file package, which is installed on client computers if the update is approved for installation. For example, the superseded update might contain files that are no longer relevant to the fix or to the operating systems
now supported by the new update, so those files are not included in the superseding update's file package.
3. Updates newer versions of a product, or in other words, is no longer applicable to older versions or configurations of a product. Updates can also supersede other updates if modifications have been made to expand language support. For example, a later
revision of a product update for Microsoft Office might remove support for an older operating system, but add additional support for new languages in the initial update release.
You can specify a period of time before superseded software updates are expired, which allows you to continue to deploy them. THe superseded rule can only be configured at central site.

Manually conrtoling Software Updates server

I need to roll out an update, but i just want to roll out that specific updade. Is there a folder on my server that the updates are downloaded into, so that i could copy the downloaded update disk image or app into and have the server roll it out via the Software Update server in the Server Admin utility. I don't really want to roll out updates on mass at the moment, but i need to apply this one update imediatly as it fixes and issue we're having.

Hi Mike,
The packages for the Software Update Server are kept in /usr/share/swupd/html/. The problem is that I haven't had any luck running these packages manually. It looks like you HAVE to go through the software update process for them to work correctly.
What you can do is uncheck the updates that you don't want to update right now, and then run software update on your clients. Only the updates that are checked in Server Admin will actually be available to your clients.

I have FCPX on my desktop and laptop. Both OSX ver 10.6. My desktop is a Mac Pro, Laptop is a Mac Book Pro early 2009. I was able to update my installation on the laptop but when I tried to update the Mac Pro I got a message stating that the program is installed and I should use software update. Both computers still have FC Studio installed. Any idea why I am getting this message on my Mac Pro?

Make sure it's
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X v10.7.5 or OS X v10.8.3 or later.
and if it is you can delete the Final Cut Pro X application from your Applications folder. Then go to Purchases in the Mac App Store and download- it will be the latest version.

Crashes ever since latest software update

Ever since I downloaded and installed the latest Apple software updates to my computer (Mac OS X 10.4.9 if I remember correctly, and whatever are the most recent updates to iTunes, QuickTime, and Backup), I've been unable to open Mail. Every time I try to launch it, it crashes and gives me the message "The application Mail quit unexpectedly." The only things I've changed in my computer since the last time I was able to use Mail have been those software updates. Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone suggest ways I can fix it?

Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s “Important: Please read before installing” warnings, etc.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:

After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the update using the combo installer:

After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.

The above may or may not solve the problem, but will allow us to at least troubleshoot it properly. Post back with your observations when done. In particular, does Mail crash immediately or when it starts to download messages.
If Mail crashes immediately upon start up, the cause could be a troublesome message that Mail tries to load every time you open it. Try launching Mail holding the Shift key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
If Mail crashes when it starts to download new mail, try the following to check whether the junk filter could have a bearing on it and post back with your observations:
1. Either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down your Internet connection and open Mail afterwards.
2. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail and disable junk mail filtering.
3. Go online again.
