Should SyndicationAgent be appearing in my Dock?

Yes, I know what this application does -- but its behavior changed recently, apparently when I upgraded to 10.4.3. It now appears in the Dock when it runs. It bounces, runs for a few seconds, then quits. Is this normal behavior?'
If not, how do I get it to return to running invisibly?
  Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Can you locate the following file in the Finder:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Syndication.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Syn dicationAgent.app/Contents/Info.plist
Note: to get inside of the SyndicationAgent.app application, Control-click on its icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the contextual menu that appears.
Open that Info.plist file in TextEdit and see if you find the following text near the bottom:
<pre> <key>LSBackgroundOnly</key>
<string>1</string>
</pre>
The does the <string> value show as 1, or is it 0?
If it is indeed 1, it sounds like your Launch Services database cache file may be corrupted. You can fix that with the following AppleScript: http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/images/LaunchServicesDatabaseRebuild.zip (.zip, ~8 KB).
If it's 0, just let us know an we can go from there.
Hope this helps...

  • Why do some Apps(programs) appear in my dock, but not in my launch pad?

I recently downloaded Open Office and Adobe Photo Shop 12 .  Photo shop appears in both my dock and launch pad.  However Appace Open Office just appears in my dock, but not my launch pad, and also the open office little disk or cd reader icon (white 3d rectangle with image of black slot in front) appears on the right side of my screen.  I can't eject it because I get a popup that says it is being used by "Open Office" and I have to quit the application to eject it.  My question is if I quit the application using "Command" Q and then eject "Open Office" will I loose open office and have to downlad it again?
I think I answere my question.
I clicked on the Open Office Icon in my dock, had it go to "Finder" then ejected the "Open Office" disck reader icon and it went away from my screen.
I then went to "Finder" and opened it up and Lo and Behold "Open Office" disappeared from there too. Boy that sure is crappy.
    So I downloaded it again.
Is there anyway to clean up the desktop so I don't have those silly images hanging around?

There have always, well for the past few years, written installers that just create a mess.  All installed applications should appear in Finder, Applications.  Not all of those will appear in Launchpad.  When you encounter one that does not appear in the correct way, all you can do is manually move things around so it is consistent with the way apps should work.

  • My itunes icon is not appearing in my dock

My itunes icon is no longer appearing in my dock and when I plug my iTouch in the only thing that comes up is iPhoto.  What should I do?  I am on 10.5.8.  I know I know.  It is way past time for an upgrade..... Any help would be greatly appreciated......

Maybe your iTunes is on "off" in the parental controls. If you turn it off, it won't show in your dock.

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • OSX Mountain Lion: Running app icons do not appear in the dock

It's almost 2-3 days that I have found when I run an application in OS X Mountain Lion, the application icon does not appear in the dock. In other words, the icons in the dock remain unchanged and no other running application icon appear in the dock. Does anyone else have the same issue?
I appreciate your time to answer my question.

Since you're having issues in multiple accounts I suggest you repair the HD and re-install the OS. ML makes the process pretty painless.
Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X
    Get help online
    Disk Utility
First choose DIsk Utility and run Repair Disk. If you find errors run it until all errors are fixed or it reports "Disk cannot be repaired".
Then, choose Reinstall OS X. This will be an install in place and won't affect any of your own data.

  • How do I stop Java processes from appearing on the dock?

I have a Java application that has a fairly extensive build process using ant. It builds fine on OSX, but constantly annoys me. There are a large number of unit tests that run using JUnit, and each test starts in a new Java process. The problem is that when each process starts (and there are about 100 during the course of the build), a new Java icon appears on the dock and stays until the process finishes. First of all, that slows down the build (since it has to do all that graphics work to keep changing the appearance of the dock). Secondly, every time a new process starts, it takes away the keyboard focus from whatever I'm currently working on. I either have to click in the window I want again, or else wait for the process to finish.
On Windows, this is handled with an alternative version of the JVM called "javaw.exe" that does not get a foreground window. However, I see no "javaw" in the Java directory on OSX. Is there some option to start Java with that will stop this dock updating? Note that there are times when I want the dock to be updated (when I'm running a "normal" Java app).

Even when the Guest Account / Access is disabled, the login option / and lock screen, still have a guest login.
This is because in Preferences/ Security & Privacy/General the bottom item is turned on.
Turn on: Disable restarting to Safari when screen is locked

  • HT203421 I have recently purchased some apps from the app store and after downloading them, the icon that appears in the dock changes to a different icon. It is now the same icon appearing on all newly downloaded apps.  Does anyone know what is happening

I have recently purchased some apps from the app store and after downloading them, the icon that appears in the dock changes to a different icon. It is now the same icon appearing on all newly downloaded apps.  Does anyone know what is happening here? Even updating an older game app resulted in the original game icon changing to the new identical icon that all new apps are appearing with.  This new icon is like a page with a ruler, pencil and paintbrush. Any tips on how to stop this or how to revert to the icon as it appears on the app store would be appreciated.

  • Weird icon appearing in my dock

Have posted this in the classic forum but not got an answer so am bringing it here.
Something called"HP Inkjet Engine" has suddenly started appearing in my dock at start up of Classic. It is a printer icon with a round white circle and an "I" on it. I can't find startup items to get rid of it, can someone please remind me?
    Some info:
It is not in systemprefs/accounts/me/startup items.
The only way I get rid of it is to do a force quit of it.
There seems to be something funny going on with Quark. The only time I launch classic is for quark. Today I just tried to launch classic on it's own and once it had launched it automatically started up quark too and tried to open a document I Iast opened a few months ago, and it quite often does this.
So, how can I get rid of this pesky apparition in my dock?
    Thanks!

    Kathykate,
Have you tried looking @ HD/9 System Folder/Startup Items. Not sure this is what is making the HP Injet Engine open upon Classic startup but worth a look if you have not already.
I don't use any OS 9 startup items when Classic opens so I'm not sure this is where they would be but worth a look......
    Best,

  • When I open a new app, it does not appear in the dock.

After upgrading to mountain lion, apps don't appear on the dock when I open them.  I also am not getting new mail notifications on my mail icon.  I've checked preferences>notifications and everything seems to be right.

  • On restart Launch Pad, Reminders, App Store and Notes appears back on Dock

I have installed Mountain Lion and loving most of the features.
I am using the five finger pinch shortcut on the trackpad to get to the Dashboard.
Its a great feature so now I have deleted all my apps on the dock.
Instead I have put my many folders on the dock.
However, on restart of my macbook pro the Launch Pad, Reminders, App Store and Notes appears back on dock
Is there a way I can switch this annoying push to have to use Apple apps on the dock?

I noticed it sometimes happened when I am on Lion.
I don't use all the Apple software, and some never even opened them to use.
But they end up back on my dock again which is super annoying.
