  • Why can I no longer use my exterior speakers connected to the USB port on my MacBook pro

QuestionWhy can I no longer use my exterior speakers connected to the USB port on my MacBook pro ?

Have you checked the Sound Preferences under the System Preferences and set it to USB speaker for the sound output? Sometimes it can change on its own or after and update of an App or the OS?

  • One of the USB ports on my Macbook Pro isn't working. Any way I can fix this or will I have to take it into the store to get repaired?

I bought a Macbook pro this July. Everything has been normal except about a week ago I started noticing I had to plug things in a few times in order for them to connect. Today I realized that one of my USB ports has been the problem, not my devices. THey connect right away when plugged into the right USB port next to the SD slot, but not at all when plugged into the left slot by the firewire hookup. Is this a problem that has a quick fix or am I going to have to go to the mac store?

    Reset the SMC and PRAM
    SMC Reset:
    Shut down the MacBook Pro.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM:
    Shut down the MacBook Pro.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Provide USB port power during Macbook Pro Sleep mode

My old Macbook used to go to sleep, with lid closed, and charge my phone via USB cable.
With my i7 2010 15" Macbook pro however, I cannot see how to configure this same feature. Basically when the lid closes, the unit goes to sleep, including the USB ports.
In order to charge my phone, I am forced to leave the computer on.
This seems like a giant step backward for a traveler like myself, one of the main reasons I made the investment in the new Macbook Pro was for the great new battery life.

I have the same problem. This was working, but it seems that after the last security update all USB ports are turned off completely, so my iPhone and iPad (both of which I leave connected to the USB ports) do not get charged. This is a big deal with my iPhone.
Is there a configuration parameter on my MBP I should check?
    Thanks!

  • USB ports in my macbook pro stop working

For a few months now the USB ports in my Macbook Pro stop working. The mouse is unable to move the pointer, therefore, I have to use the trackpad to select things. Then, when i try to shut it down it refuses to shut down, so I have to hold the on/off button to turn it off. When I turn on the laptop, the problem goes away. It's been happening more often for the last few weeks. Is there a problem with the software or is it the fact that I never used a base to raise the laptop, until recently, to let air in below so it doesnt heat up so much?
    Any help is appreciated.

I would do another SMC reset. If nothing changes you should take the computer in to an Apple store for a free diagnostic. You should make an appointment.

  • How do I know whether the USB port in my macbook air is 2.0 or 3.0?

How do I know whether the USB port in my macbook air is 2.0 or 3.0? I really want to use a usb flash drive that has faster read/write speed but I don't kow if it would be supported by my macbook air - I purchased the macbook air from the apple store on autumn 2011, 1.7Ghz Intel Core i5

  • Is it safe to use the USB port in my car to charge my iPhone 5s or do I need to buy a car charger?

Is it safe to use the USB port in my car to charge my iPhone 5s or do I need to buy a car charger?

Check car manual to see if it supports charging ,some do not
or use a USB 12 volt plug in for the "cigarrette lighter" socket and plug into that ,probably a better solution

  • I am currently using the firewire port on my macbook pro to record dv from my camera. Can I capture video/audio using my USB port as well?ra

I've been connecting a sony PD170 via firewire to my Macbook pro to record directly using Quicktime pro. Can I use the usb port (and mini audio in) to accomplish this with a camcorder that doesn't have a fire wire port but does have USB out?

It could just be a bad disc - I use Verbatim and have only had one fail in a ten-year time period. Try getting a batch of Verbatims and see if you have any problems. I didn't even know that there were Kodak branded discs...

  • Has anyone ever had a USB port on their Macbook Pro suddenly go dead?

I was just wondering whether anyone using a MAcbook Pro Retina has suddenly had one of their USB ports die on them? My one port does not seem to recongise any peripheral hardware I attach to the port and I am confused why this should have happened. Apart from the obvious reason which is probably that the USB port has died I was just wondering whether this is a common fault with these machines and if it is, whether someone else may have a few words of wisdom related to how to solve the problem. The machine is not even 6 months old so I am reluctant to simply write this off to a failed USB port which will be the first time this has ever happened to me. I would value any input.

    Hi C,
You have a one year warranty and I would definitely bring this to Apple for diagnosis and repair.

  • USB Ports on my MacBook Pro are not working

My MacBook Pro (Original) USB ports recently stopped working. They come up in system profiler as being there, but when I connect a device, such as a flash drive, no leds turn on, and no power is given to it. I have tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, but all to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance for your help

I had a nearly identical issue today with a new CTO MacBook Pro...specifically, the USB ports on this new unit were unresponsive to devices being plugged to their slots. We reset SMC to no avail, unplugged all other non-essential peripherals, and still no change.
We were specifically trying to boot a previously functioning Seagate hard drive with a fully intact install of Snow Leopard. Eventually the MBP detected the drive and read the contents. We selected the externally connected drive for startup (which S/L found without issue) in System Prefs. At boot, no progress further than Apple logo (without animated gears indicating some type of load process).
Moved to an identically equipped secondary Thunderbolt MBP which presented with exact same issue. To further verify this was an issue with the USB ports on a Thunderbolt model MBP, we attempted boot of the externally connected drive to an iMac and then a MacMini. Both of these units booted the drive without issue. The Thunderbolt MBPs can see the drive, read the contents, but can't boot them.
Disk Utility verified and ran repair on the external drive and reported zero problems.
Both MBPs are being returned to Apple. Too much to risk for only having two USB ports.

  • I have charged my Kobo reader using the USB port on my MacBook Air. I do not know how to eject it properly

I have charged my Kobo reader via usb port on my MacBook Air but do not know how to eject it safely before disconnecting the device from my laptop.

  • HT202731 Unstable operation when 2 or more USB devices connected to usb port on a MacBook Pro running Yosemite

I have tried connecting a number of devices to my MacBook Pro but I have found if I try to connect 2 or more using either usb ports or a usb hub the computer reports 'disk not ejected properly' and sometimes it will fail to recognise the device and remove it from the desktop or it stalls operation and I have to turn the computer off at the power button.
I have tried erasing the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system.
I have done various types of reset suggested by apple support.
The computer has been to an Apple dealer who has tested the hardware but found nothing due to the intermittent nature of the problem.
I have operated the computer with only the software originally installed on it present.
Could it be possible that a virus could be present on the usb devices I am trying to connect?
My computer is a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Startup Disk Macintosh HD
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
    Operating System X Yosemite 10.10.1
Devices I have connected to USB ports all USB 3.0 compatible in a variety of combinations:-
7 port superspeed USB 3.0 hub (powered).
4 port Inateck USB 3.0 portable hub (not powered).
Buffalo ultra portable 500Gb USB 3.0 hard drive.
Seagate Expansion portable 500Gb USB 3.0 hard drive.
Seagate Expansion desktop 2Tb USB 3.0 hard drive (powered).
Seagate Expansion desktop 3Tb USB 3.0 hard drive (powered).
ScanDisk Cruiser Edge 16Gb USB stick.
ScanDisk Cruiser Edge 32Gb USB stick.
Hewlett Packard 16Gb USB stick. (This causes an instant crash now.)

    Why?
    - Because when I'm editing/ rendering lots of HD video everyday, I don't want to share system resources between virtual machines... I want the entire system's resources devoted to what I'm doing.
    - I don't want to spend anymore money than I have to in order to buy one of the faster virtual systems. Not to mention, I've had a bad experience with Parralels in the past and I'd rather not use one again.
    - I really don't want to clutter up my system anymore than I have to for a project that's only going to take a few weeks.
    - I don't mind swapping hard drives... it takes two minutes, and I have an empty ssd just sitting on the shelf.
So, back to my original question. Can I just swap the computer's drives, then install Ubuntu on the second drive and be good to go without any harm to my MacBook Pro or OSX on the other drive (which wouldn't be connected when Ubuntu is running)?
    Thanks.

  • Why does the huawei modem from Cricket or any flashdrive fit in the USB cord on my macbook pro?

Okay, so I just purchased a macbook pro and I was excited about switching from my dell. While I set up everything in my mac book, it asked me what type of wi-fi or internet connection I would be choosing. I tried to install my cricket modem but there was one problem. It doesn't fit in the USB cord. At first I thought I was putting it wrong but no that wasn't the answer. Then I tried to put a flashdrive to test it and it doesn't fit either? Is there like something wrong with my mac or I am doing something wrong? I didn't had this type of problem with my dell? In fact, I could even connect ipods, iphones to it but in mac....nothing. Can somebody please help me? I'm starting to get frustrated.

The easiest way is to go to the Apple site and find the Java for OSX 2014-001 and install it. There have been some reports of blank pages returned so you may need to try several browsers.
