Should there be concern about the EOL of most of the droid phones?

for a while ive been researching heavily about droid phones due to verizon wireless taking over my centennial wireless in my town.
ive been extremely excited and though i have to wait till may of 2011, i was hoping to get a droid x which is the best for my current lifestyle.
well i was looking up if there were going to be any new phones coming out between now and may and i came across this article that i have the link to below. it talks about the EOL of the droid phones and alot of them including the X and incredible will stop being sold if i read it correctly.
so what is up with this? will i be out of luck come may when i wont be able to buy the X i want or is this good news about better phones that will come out and maybe they will come out with a phone that is the same size and operating system layout as the X? why would verizon do this?

so does this mean that when i finally switch over to verizon in may, the X will not be sold but the new phones will be?
any idea if they will finally get the bugs worked out in the new devices? like did they get things right with the droid 2 global and the pro that just came out?
and in the case that i get to switch over sooner than may, should i hold off till the new phones or get one of the phones that are available at the momment?
I think there will always be some bug that some find annoying. As for my Inc. I have had it since the day it rolled out and with all that you see in the forum, I have never had any of those issues. Remember, subs come here for issues. But there are 90+ million subs out there, so for the majority, all is well.
As for the X, you may very well find a 3rd party or an affiliate store in May that still has the phone you want.
I thought the Global Droid comes out next week. As for holding out for something else or get one that is available at that moment...... that is a decision you have to make. These devices are constantly evolving. By may there could very well be an LTE Droid out there.... That really throws a wrinkle in the decision process!!

  • Should we be concerned about this?

We were reading about this virus that effects 10.5.6 here.
Should we be concerned about it? How real is it? Thanks.

No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download from:
    http://www.clamxav.com/
However, the appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
You can read more about how, for example, the OSX/DNSChanger Trojan works here:
    http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/trojanosxdnschanger.shtml
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X. It's available here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X and allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
(Note that a 30 day trial version of MacScan can be downloaded free of charge from:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
and this can perform a complete scan of your entire hard disk. After 30 days the cost is $29.99. The full version permits you to scan selected files and folders only, as well as the entire hard disk. It will detect (and delete if you ask it to) all 'tracker cookies' that switch you to web sites you did not want to go to.)
A white paper has recently been published on the subject of Trojans by SubRosaSoft, available here:
    http://www.macforensicslab.com/ProductsAndServices/index.php?mainpage=document_general_info&cPath=11&productsid=174
    Also, beware of MacSweeper:
MacSweeper is malware that misleads users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer. It is the first known "rogue" application for the Mac OS X operating system. The software was discovered by F-Secure, a Finland based computer security software company on January 17, 2008
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacSweeper
On June 23, 2008 this news reached Mac users:
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/23/mac_trojan/
More information on Mac security can be found here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/
The MacScan application can be downloaded from here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
You can download a 30 day trail copy which enables you to do a full scan of your hard disk. After that it costs $29.95.

    http://www.technewsworld.com/story/63574.html?welcome=1214487119
This was published on July 25, 2008:
Attack code that exploits flaws in the net's addressing system are starting to circulate online, say security experts.
The code could be a boon to phishing gangs who redirect web users to fake bank sites and steal login details.
In light of the news net firms are being urged to apply a fix for the loop-hole before attacks by hi-tech criminals become widespread.
Net security groups say there is anecdotal evidence that small scale attacks are already happening.
    Further details here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7525206.stm
A further development was the Koobface malware that can be picked up from Facebook (already a notorious site for malware, like many other 'social networking' sites), as reported here on December 9, 2008:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/technology/newsid_7773000/7773340.stm
You can keep up to date, particularly about malware present in some downloadable pirated software, at the Securemac site:
    http://www.securemac.com/
There may be other ways of guarding against Trojans, viruses and general malware affecting the Mac, and alternatives will probably appear in the future. In the meantime the advice is: be careful where you go on the web and what you download!
As to the current 'Conficker furore' affecting Intel-powered computers, MacWorld recently had this to say:
    http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?email&NewsID=25613
Although any content that you download has the possibility of containing malicious software, practising a bit of care will generally keep you free from the consequences of anything like the DNSChanger trojan.
    1. Avoid going to suspect and untrusted Web sites, especially *********** sites.
    2. Check out what you are downloading. Mac OS X asks you for you administrator password to install applications for a reason! Only download media and applications from well-known and trusted Web sites. If you think you may have downloaded suspicious files, read the installer packages and make sure they are legit. If you cannot determine if the program you downloaded is infected, do a quick Internet search and see if any other users reported issues after installing a particular program.
    3. Use an antivirus program like ClamXav. If you are in the habit of downloading a lot of media and other files, it may be well worth your while to run those files through an AV application.
    4. Use Mac OS X's built-in Firewalls and other security features.
    5. Stop using LimeWire. LimeWire (and other peer-to-peer sharing applications) are hotbeds of potential software issues waiting to happen to your Mac. Everything from changing permissions to downloading trojans and other malicious software can be acquired from using these applications.

I cannot highlight more than one e-mail.  I am concerned about this when I am in the Junk mailbox.  I do not want to open any e-mails that are in this mailbox.

    Two thoughts:
    1.  You never need to open any emails in the junk mailbox.  You can simply do Mailbox > Erase Junk Mail from Mail's menu.
    2.  What happens if you hold the shift key after highlighting the first in a series of emails, then click the second one with the shift key depressed?  That should hightlight both.

  • Should I be concerned about heat??

Hi, My macbook gets quite hot and is almost unbearable on the lap. Should I be concerned about this? I have heard about this issue and I wanted to know if it can be ignored.

Mine averages about 160F inside, so the case is bound to get quite warm. Use an insulator between your lap and the MacBook. I bought this EZ Laptop Riser for my MacBook. Works great on your lap. It's well built, keeps your lap cool and helps dissipates some of the MacBook's heat.

    Gerry,
    1. I uninstalled WSUS, removed DB, restarted. And reinstall WSUS again. This time MS Management Console of WSUS could not be started. I did it after WSUS was added following your blog pix.
I checked c:\program files\update services, there were couple of missing directories by comparison what was in case when I installed WSUS after SQL but before CM: Tools, Shema, and another A.. something. I saw this issue on NOOB. And people copied these
    directories from previous installation.
How we can explain this behavior on RTM version?
Then I uninstalled it again. And give another try... Here I found another interesting thing. Please compare your slide number 5 from your link and attached one. You can see that on Add Roles and Features Wizard page are missing items. Some
of them were found in next screen of my installation (I am using RTM server) but one API and Power shell  cmdlets were not listed on final screen before start install. May be those are note important...
I reinstall again... and the MS Management Console fails again. Exactly the same thing that I saw during 2 weeks of trying to make works. Don't see what I can screw up here.
What about missing directories after reinstalling WSUS. Is that normal? And in IIS there is no WSUS.
I don't see here any difficult thing, just simple wizard... But it not works. Second CM server.
What I do wrong here to create a failure of MMC. There is any blog with examples of RTM Server 2012 and CM RTM. All stuff is 2012. So kind of guesses and no precise thing to do...
Sorry for my cry :). The only solution is to call MS and pay $250 for SUCH a trivial thing that not works.
Any help? Please see pics. Can you confirm that you have the same or more directories in Update Services
    Thanks.
API and Power Shell Cmdlets feature missed if compare with yours slides.

So,you are requested to solve my problem at the earliest .

This is a user to user forum: you are not speaking to Apple.  If you bought it new, it is still (just) under warranty.  Take the matter up with the shop where you bought it or directly with Apple to see if it is eligible for a replacement.  If it decided the problem does not come under the warranty, you should be able to buy an out of warranty replacement phone. The US price is $149, I do not know the price in India.

why does the back arrow just reload the same page most of the time
    == This happened ==
    Not sure how often
== most of the time since I installed it

    Hi Keith.
This is probably a normal behavior that's induced by the way pages are done. Can you provide a link to a page where this happens?
For example, wikipedia articles often have links that lead to sections of the article and not to actually different pages, as you may know. If you click the Back button, Firefox will lead you to the section of the page you were looking at when you clicked that link. Is this perhaps what you're talking about?
AJAX pages (i.e. pages that take advantage of heavy duty javascript code and server side technologies) often have troubles like these. It's very hard to prevent this from happening from the browsers' point of view, but Mozilla is trying to find a way for Firefox 4 (at least like time I checked they were). So using the back and forth buttons in gmail will probably be troublesome.

  • Should I have concerns about the integrity of Best Buy's Mac sales?

I bought my iMac OS X, Early 2008 Model from a Best Buy store. I was a naive & pensive 1st time [ever] PC buyer. The sales [kid] led me to an iMac that had been returned, and referred to it as an "open box sale." I was re-assured the Mac had been completely "wiped clean of all..." After setting it up at home, I found out different; and the previous owner had it for 4 months! Earlier at B.Buy the sales kid told me after asking "why was it returned?" His reply, "Because the screen was too big." His answer certainly didn't make sense to me then, or when I discovered [at home] that it took the 1st owner [him] so long to decide it wasn't what he wanted. So I packed up my Mac & returned to the B.Buy store to have everything cleared.
I knew I had a lot of trial & error lessons on my hands, not being a computer literate person, but evidently I like a good challenge; and that it has been! No complaints; at first I was concerned about 'doing something wrong'. I was re-assured by the Geek Squad, "You can't harm it; just explore your Mac to get to know it." Well, needless to say, not being able to follow instructions in Owner's Manuals, I'm more of a "slowly SHOW me HOW TO, and what's what" type of learner. I had to Google everything pertaining to PC terminology, steps on how to download & install, files, folders, using delete/trash, keeping all in place/order and NOT duplicating [and which one to keep if I did!] Please don't think I'm stupid; my Mac has been properly stored for 6 years, minus 8 months. I was not in the position in my life to have it set up in a secure environment. Since Jan 2014, my Mac & I have spent many hours, equalling weeks & months face-to-[screen] face!
I've had many problems since installing OS X Mavericks 10.9.4; and was very apprehensive updating due to the many unfavorable Reviews I had been researching. But I couldn't keep ignoring Apple's repeated recommendations of keeping every item updated. So I eventually found my way to all info, ON ONE PAGE! Yipee! I could not believe what I was reading! Even though I was aware my APPLE apps, plug-ins, utilities, etc. were not auto updating [set to do so]. I FINALLY found my Mac's PROBLEM. My main software, Snow Leopard (10.6.8) is GROSSLY OUTDATED! I totally spaced that due to my Mac being packed away for so long. So I'm working on that. I'M SHARING all MY INFO hoping to help other's who are at my technical level. SO all YOU COMPUTER WHIZZES can SCOFF, GIGGLE all YOU WANT . I take no offense, I'm kidding ☀️.
BUT!! Since learning how & where to navigate through the system's files & such, and seeing documents, folders and files that strike me as odd, I have a NAGGING ITCH something is there from the ORIGINAL OWNER. He CREATED SOMETHING, a way into my system, CURRENTLY. I've had to Google 'plist names', and with the help of a very longtime good Facebook friend in New York State, I am learning more from his knowledge & advice. ALL my APPLE security settings are set-up, deny's & allows, and I'm not downloading Videos from MeTube , or anywhere else for that matter. I only download SAFE game apps, and I'm the ONLY user. ANY IDEAS or SUGGESTIONS COMP WHIZZES? Besides updating my software; I'm just trying to find out [on that subject] if I have to buy, download/install all Software Programs of past to be able to run the current OS X Mavericks? Which I read already has a 10.9.5 version. I wanted to become a part of the "Preview Program" for Yosemite; but nope, I cannot!
REASONS for MY PREVIOUS OWNER Concerns: My system got so bad, while attempting to Chat on fb w/one friend; every letter I typed, the rainbow ball would spin forever, highlight & delete partial words, and would totally crash. I downloaded an anti Virus app for Mac; scanned my system [took forever]; ending w/a report of 55 VIRUSES!! Many files could not be scanned too. My Mac HD Encrypted Logical Partition Drive un-mounted at least two times, and there's one too many files than there should be. But the file name was not shown, only that the count is off. HELP?

While I am no fan of Best Buy and would not buy a lightbulb from them I doubt you issues have anything to do with your iMac and more to do with your lack of experience and simply getting bad advice. Judging by you post I suspect you have loaded your computer down with a lot of crapware and that  has caused it's problems. For example running antivirus apps on a Mac not only is a waste of time, it's a waste of money, system resources and will eventually create more problems that it solves. Please begin educating yourself on the subject by reading Thomas Reeds articles on the subject, Thomas is a frequent and knowledgeable contributor to these forums. You can find his webpage at http://www.reedcorner.net/tech-guides/
The good news is here are absolutely no, zero, zippo viruses for OS X. There are other types of malware available (for example trojans) however they differ greatly from viruses in that the use has to download and install them, whereas viruses do not work that way. OS X is not like MS Windows and is extremely secure.
My suggestion at this point would be to clean your computer of the crapware (including antivirus apps) however before doing so please download and install EtreCheck and post its report. Then we can see how your computer has been configured and begin to give you some advice on the next steps.

  • There not enough room to d/l ios8 on my ipad 2.  My 5s phone u/l fine.  Should I be concerned about any backups that my ipad would not work with?

My 5s phone d/l ios8 fine.  My ipad 2 does not have enough space.  Is there any concerns I might have to pay attention to (if) I save to icloud?

No that's not correct. Any apps that were working on your iPad in iOS 7 will still work on your iPad. You would only be downloading apps if you delete them from the device. Most apps are being updated for iOS 8 but that doesn't mean that they will not still work in iOS 7 or in iOS 6 for that matter.
What you cannot do is restore a backup from the phone to the iPad now because you cannot restore a newer OS backup to an older OS device. The phone is running iOS 8 now and that backup will not work on the iPad that is running iOS 7. Do not confuse the backup which contains app data and device settings, with apps that you download from the cloud.
You should be able to delete enough content to make room to download iOS 8, but frankly, since you have an iPad 2, you might want to give some more thought to it before you updates to iOS 8. I am reading some not so favorable reports from users that have the iPad 2 and updated to iOS 8. It is certainly your choice to make one way or the other, but you might want to do a little more research first.

  • Should I be concerned about shared_pool_size=0

    Hi there,
Totally Oracle noob here, be gentle :)
I have an issue I'm trying to debug on Oracle 10G Express (mentioned in another thread on this forum) and after a bit of googling I ended up issuing:
    SQL> show parameter shared
    which told me:
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    hi_shared_memory_address integer 0
    max_shared_servers integer
    shared_memory_address integer 0
    shared_pool_reserved_size big integer 9227468
    shared_pool_size big integer 0
    shared_server_sessions integer
    shared_servers integer 4
Is there anything there that should cause concern. The reason I ask is that the problems I'm having may be related to memory - and shared_pool_size=0 seems like a bit of a red flag y'know.
So, simple question, is there anything here to be concerned about?
    thanks

  • Should I Be Concerned About My Hard disk?

    Hey,
This is probably really stupid to ask, but I have a question about the Hard Disk on my MacBook... I just bought it the other day and knew it was a 60GB MacBook when I bought it. As of right now it has around 38.74GB available, but that number seems to fluctuate throughout the day. So, I'll be using it and it will be at 38.8GB, goes down to the 38.74, but after I shut it down for the night and I turn it back on in the morning, it's back up to 38.8GB. Is this normal or should I be concerned?
    Thanks in advance...

In your utilities folder there is an application called Activity Monitor. It will show you a pie chart of your drive as to what is free and used.
A lot of space is used up out of the box by things like Garage Band loops, the Jingle library, iDVD, iWeb, and iMovie themes, etc. If you never plan on using some of these you can do a re-install of the system from the DVDs and select custom at the very end to uncheck them. Also there are language translations, printer drivers, etc.
If you want a more granular approach to finding what space is used on your drive how, then you want WhatSize.

I allowed PC Update Support to take over my computer (long story) When they were done I checked them out and discovered they were most likely scammers. I ran my antivirus program and changed passwords. Should I be concerned that they may have installed malware?

If you are sure they were scammers the only way to be 100% sure they left nothing behind is to wipe your system disk, do a clean install and restore from a backup you are sure was made before the scammers got onto you system.
There is no other way to be sure that thye did not leave somehting behind. In addition if you have used any credit card numbers while on the system, back account (or any other) passwords, tax returns, etc. You need to be alert fo IIdentity Theft | Consumer Information. It may be a good idea to place a fraud alert with one of the credit reporting agencies (the link above will detail what to do)
And of course change the passwords right away.

Of the network's that appear in the Wi-Fi menu, my system seems fond of a network named Elrho's router. This event is found under the system log queries.

Most probably just the WiFi router of a neighbor being picked up by the autodiscovery for WiFi networks. I see almost a dozen in the area around where I live. If so, it's nothing to worry about.

what RBRY says. Look at the fine print on your power brick. It says 100v-240v. This means it can handle world wattage.....both the us 110 and the UK/and other places 220. Anything that displays that range works anywhere in the world with the right plug adapter.
You can get plug adapters at walgreens, walmart, target, kmart, best buy, office max, office depot.....almost any major retailer. Look in the travel/luggage area.
Do some googling and find out what Italian plugs look like or you can simply find a kit that is a 'world wide' kit.
