Should We Move To Leopard?

I work for a school district and we use OS X server strictly for the the ability to manage our OS X clients. Other than Workgroup Manager and NetBoot, we do not use any other features of OS X Server. I'm in the process of migrating all of the clients over to 10.5, and I am debating whether or not we need to upgrade to 10.5 server just yet. Seeing as the 10.5 version of WGM will connect to a 10.4.11 server and allow you to manage 10.5 clients, would there be any added WGM features and/or benefits by upgrading our servers to 10.5?
Thanks in advance for any responses!

If you experience any abnormalities you may want to upgrade the server to match the client. In testing we found that OS X 10.5.3 and higher client software would kill the TCP stack on the 10.3.9 server.
However, 10.3.9 clients interact with the 10.5.5 server install without issues.
Just something to look for.

  • Should I move these drives around?

I have a Mac Pro 2.66 and six hard drives total: The 250G that came with the mac, 150G Raptor, 500G Maxtor Maxline, WD750 R2, plus two 250G external firewire boxes. Can someone please help to configure them?
This is how I've set them:
    Raptor = Leopard (boot)
    WD750 = Leopard (boot copy) + Imovies
Maxtor = Pictures + Jobs (quark and indesign files, fonts)
Original 250G = Copy of Tiger + Windows XP.
Is this good enough or should I move those drives around.
    Thanks in advance

In today's drive world I don't see much point to the Raptors although as you already have it you might as well use it as you are. My only concern with the use of the Raptor is it's fill. Drives get slower the fuller they get so be careful with that.
Your WED 750GB drive will in fact be your best performer so if you were interested in messing about I would probably make that your "everything" (boot and data) drive from which you can then make your Raptor your Windows drives isolating it from everything else. The the 250GB drive can then be your Tiger/secondary storage drive.
By doing this you should be able to turn your Maxtor into a Time Machine drive.
    Just a thought.

  • Should I waith for Leopard?

Thanks in advance, I need advices.
I am planning to get a 250 GB 2.5" HD (if you know of a larger one internal let me know) for my MacBookPro core duo 2. I will install: Parallel(or one of the others to run windows on my mac),windows xp pro with office 2007, sony acid, ProTools 7.2
I use adobe photo shop, indesign and illustrato as well.
I am also waiting for my new Logic and final cut programs (i am learning these two applications).
All my music and photos will be recorded in external HD and will be installing only the applications in the internal HD.
    1. Should I wait to get leopard to do a fresh install
    2. is it worth it to install the applications and re-install everything when leopard arrives?
    3. how much disk space will be enough to have sony acid and MS office in the windows partition.
    THANK YOU...

I already have the MacBookPro Duo 2 with 120 gig hd, 2gig RAM.
I know it is not enough HD. That is why I need a bigger one. I only have 50 gig of free space right now, but I still need to install: sony acid, final cut and logic; PLUS windows xp pro and Micro Soft office PRO.
The question: is it worth it to install just logic and final cut to play with it, or should I wait for leopard (and my new HD that I still need to buy) to install the applications complete with the accessories that comes with it (sounds, filters, etc.).

  • Is After Effects CC disk cache taking up double the space on my RAID 0 SSD? Should I move it?

In AE CC the available space on my RAID 0 (2 x 120GB SSD) drive drops from 100GB to around 40GB as soon as I do even a small RAM preview and even though I have set the disk cache in the preferences to 30GB. It also causes AE to prompt that I may not have enough space on the drive for the amount of cache I have set in preferences even though there appears to be 40GB left on it.
I really value working with long fast RAM previews but other than that I'm not sure if the performance is jeopardised at all here. At one point I was enjoying 60GB of disk cache.
RAID 0 is striped so it shouldn't take up double the space, am I right?
I am about to install a RAID 0 HDD (2 x 3TB) for source files as I work with video a lot and have a 4K RAW project on the go so no time like the present. So should I move the disk cache from the ridiculously fast RAID 0 SSD to the new RAID HDD drive (as suggested in Harm's guide)?

Thank you Mylenium. All this time I have been absolutely convinced that you don't need to defragment SSDs. Is this a complete misunderstanding? Even if you do though, I have Windows 8 (not 8.1) which is doing that once a week automatically (apparently even to SSDs).
Are you saying that the 30GB disk cache set up works like a contiguous file?
    i7 3930k (12 virtual cores) on P9X79 Deluxe
2 x 120GB Force GT Raid 0 SSD on SATA 6gb/s is my boot drive as well as where I keep programs and the disk cache. I do a disk clean up to remove temp files a couple of times a week but that's all.
1 x 3TB Barracuda on on SATA 6gb/s for back ups and exports
3TB Lacie on USB 3 for source video and project files
2TB Lacie on USB 3 for archive projects

I'll try a manual defrag of my RAID 0 SSDs now.

  • IPhoto library corrupted. Should I move to Aperture, or make smaller libraries?

    Hi,
Mountain lion mac mini, running most recent iPhoto.
iPhoto library of 376 GBs (finder size)
In November I had hard drive issues which corrupted a previous library. I created a new one library, and merged libraries from old backups on a different drive. using iPhot library manager. Now, several months later, iPhoto is stating that I don't have permission to write to the library. It quit. Now it won't open. I have tried using the iPhoto repair utility - first to repair permissions, then to repair the database. Still being told that I don't have permission.
This database is on an external drive that I have read and write permissions, the iPhoto library file tells me that I have Read and Write permissions.
Given the size of the database - should I move to Aperture? Would it do a better job? Or should I make smaller iPhoto libraries?

This database is on an external drive that I have read and write permissions, the iPhoto library file tells me that I have Read and Write permissions.
And how is your drive formatted? Does it have the correct formatting for iPhoto libraries - MacOS Extended (Journaled)?
To check the format see this document:  Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
The title says Aperture, but it applies to iPhoto as well.

  • A Folder "Apple Security_files" is on my desktop. where should I move it?

I have a powerbook G4 running OS X 10.4.6. I also have OS X 10.2.7 on an external hard drive. This is because my Epson perfection 3170 scanner will not work with 10.4 but did work with 10.2 and I'm trying (unsucessfully) to use it.
(But that is another topic) A folder named Apple Security_Files which has 13 gif files, 1 css file (default.css), and 5 png files (a.png thru a_005png) in it. I'm not sure if this folder came out of my 10.4 librays somewhere or my 10.2 library somewhere. It is the only folder with this name that spotlight finds on my system. WHERE SHOULD I MOVE IT TO TO GET IT OFF THE DESKTOP?
    Thanks
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Not sure about the name "Apple Security_Files" - but here's a breakdown of the file formats you've noted:
    gif = picture/image file
css = "style-sheet" for web page design
    png = macromedia fireworks document
If I had to guess... this looks like some part of a web design project.
    Hope this helps!

  • HT4929 Should I move to icloud if none of my devices are compatible?

I have a macmini and a macbook air both with 2GB ram running snow leopard, an iphone 3G running iOS4.2.1 and and an original ipad.
I was a .mac member and a mobileme member.
I stopped using mobileme to sync contacts and calendars because for some reason my contacts and calendars were corrupted and would never sync properly. So I was basically only using mail.
I signed up to keep my mail.
I used gallery and web.me - which I know are going away. I downloaded everything but and it will be painful for me when everything is deleted.
    QUESTIONS:
Do I need to move to iCloud? Is there any benefit for me?
If I upgrade my macOS to Lion or get a new iPhone after June 30th, will I be able to use iCloud with my current email address?
    Afraid to upgrade...
    - I don't want to upgrade macmini and macbook air from snow leopard ot Lion right now because I heard that both my machines may need more than 2GM ram to run smoothly.
    - I don't want to upgrade from iPhoto 8.12 to iPhoto 11 because I heard people don't like it and it's slow with only 2GM ram.
    - I don't want to my original iPad to iOS5 because I heard that some people's got 'bricked'?
    - I cant' upgrade my iPhone 3G
QUESTION: Should I upgrade my OS and iPhoto? It seems like I only read bad things, not positive things which is very paralyzing.
Afraid to trust Apple with my data... Every time I commit to putting my data in an apple service, the service is ended and my data is deleted. homepage.mac, gallery, web.me, corrupted contact lists, etc... Other companies care about the data and help customers move their data.
I don't want to buy all new hardware and software with the promise that Apple will take care of my data. They didn't when I was paying for mobileme. Will they care about my data if it's a free service in iCloud? I've been an Apple customer since 1991, and have owned dozens of apple products and even worked at Apple. July 1, 2012 I will be very sad when my data... photos and websites will be deleted like they are nothing. Everything Apple helps you create and collect is treated as if it has no significance.

If you have moved your current MobileMe email address to iCloud in order to keep using it after today, then you have already "moved" to iCloud - you just havent moved everything and are not using all the features.
At anytime in the future, when you get compatible hardware and software you can start using the rest of iCloud with your current account.
No company can guarantee that they or their services will be around forever. Apple have stated publicly that iCloud is central to their business for the next decade or more.
    - RAM is cheap and your machines and software will always benefit from having more RAM.
    - Like anything in life, some people like iPhoto, some don't. Maybe you should make up your own mind?
    - What about the 99.999% of people whose iPads didn't get bricked updating to iOS5? People get killed everyday crossing the street - doesn't stop you doing it though, does it?
You should never trust any single company with your data - regardless of who it is. That's why backups were invented.
Apple have given over a years notice of the end of MobileMe (much longer than any other company has ever given of thE closure of other services, that I recall). They also automatically handle the migration to iCloud, and provide lots of detailed support articles for backing up and moving your stuff. What more do you want? Them to come round personally and do it for you?

  • Unable to send mail to some addresses after move to Leopard

I am not sure, whether I am in the right forum with my question. If not, please tell me where I should go.
I am traveling a lot for work and have clients in many countries. Since 2004, I have been using Mac laptops and have not encountered any problems sending mail through clients' LANs, from my own place to clients, or from any number of hotels to clients. I migrated from Tiger to Leopard on the day the latter OS became available.
Since the move, I am experiencing a problem sending mail to one specific client. I can no longer send mail to my various contacts within that client's premises (all of whom share the same domain name) from outside. I also cannot send mail to any of those contacts when I am hooked up to the client's network (but not the domain) whilst within the client's premises.
I use Mail and a mac.com address. I do not use web-mail. It is further noteworthy that messages from my side without attachments will sometimes (perhaps 20% of the time) go through. However, messages with attachments never go through. I have discussed the matter at length with the two IT-experts at the client (a government office) and we have not been able to come up with suggestions.
Since I am now forced to use a USB-stick to exchange info with my client, I would much welcome your suggestions as to the cause of the problem and possible solutions. Many thanks in advance.

Thank you for taking up the issue, Type17. The mails do not disappear, they remain in my outbox (on my Mac). The intended recipient does not get a message. I, for my part, see a box with the message 'Cannot send the message using the server 'smtp.mac.com: myloginname'. The server name is highlighted in blue in a box below and I get the choices: 'Edit message', 'Try later' and 'Try with selected server'. None of these resolves the problem. The last option, i.e. 'Try with selected server', is a bit strange, because pressing the button 'Edit server list', shows only the server already mentioned. I have tried 'Connection doctor' several times over the past months, but this consistently gives me a green light against the smtp and the message: 'Connection and login to server successful'.

  • How should I move to a new Apple ID?

    Hey everyone!
With lots of problems with my new iPhone 4s, studying Apple's devices and services such as Apple ID and iCloud,
it's time for me to create new Apple ID. I have made a lot of mistakes... New Apple ID! :)
    So here's my question:
How to move to new Apple ID (which isn't created yet) properly?
I mean, how to save everything which I can save from my actual/old Apple ID? (And transfer/move to a new one?)
Apps, Songs, SMSs, iMessages, Calls History, Calendar, Contacts, PHOTOS, VIDEOS, apps' and games' data, Game Center account, Notifications, Notes, Passbook, Mail, Safari History and Bookmarks, Mail, FaceTime, Dictaphone's recordings, iMessages account and everything that I didn't write...?
(Like for example accounts which are using my Apple ID [such as Apple Discussions Account])?
+I want to change Apple ID, because I have downloaded apps from few iTunes Stores (Poland, U.S., Germany, Japan) and it is all messed up...
Also, should I completely restart my iPhone (like, to 'activate your device' window) or just log out from my old/actual Apple ID and log in to new one in iTunes Store on iPhone?
Maybe there's a different way to untie my apps and other purchases from my Apple ID? (For example turning off iCloud?)
Sorry for not meshing it a little, I am really bad at it :(

Okay, so I can create new Apple ID and act like it is my first, but I can use the same email on my new Apple ID only after changing it on the old ID? I get it.
Now, how to delete every important data or accounts on that old Apple ID to know it can be gone forever, without any consequences for my iPhone/new Apple ID? (I want to break up with it, like it never even existed)
By that I mean: turn off iCloud or delete all my data stored in iCloud, delete game data and account in Game Center to use Game Center on the new Apple ID, things like that (Get rid of old ID forever and delete all it's data from iCloud, iTunes, or smth...)
What should I do to go to 'Activate your phone' screen (start everything from beginning)?
Also, isn't there any way to not lose all stuff (except for apps, music) which I have written before?
SMS, iMessage messages, PHOTOS, VIDEOS, Dictaphone recordings, etc.?
Or is it possible to have it all on the computer and transfer them later back to iPhone, on the new ID?
Thank you for your time and support!
    I really appreciate it! :)

  • Reinstalling OS X on a mid 07 iMac, do i go back to original install disk or should i use Snow Leopard disk?

I have an mid 07 iMac, running on Mountain lion OS. It has been not working smoothly, constant freezing. I'm guessing its dying, however when I run a hardware test on DU is passes with no errors. I would like to wipe it clean and re-install my most recent OS, and my backed up harddrive. I have everything backed up on an external hd. I tried to do the recovery with Command R and it wouldn't do it. I think its something with my internet connection??  I tried to reinstall with the last OS install disk I have which is Snow Leopard. It wouldn't let me do that either. Do I have to go back to original install disk that came with it and start from scratch? I want to make sure I cover all bases before I invest another grand into one of these lovely machines:) any advice would be appreciated.

    Good morning.
Just to repeat.  Back up before doing anything; preferably to an external (portable) HD.
Luckily you seem to have the original dvd.  Boot from that; you should then be able to select erase and install. That will erase everything on your HD and load the OS.  It should bring you to 10.6.3.  Once that is done you can then  software update to 10.6.8.  The Combo update is an option you can use instead of going through each process one at a time.  For that you should download and apply ...

  • How should I move all of my Final Cut Pro files to an external drive?

My MacBook Pro doesn't have enough space to hold all of my Final Cut Pro X files (my internal hard drive is only 120GB), and I bought an external hard drive that has 120GB capacity too but want to move all of my FCP files to that drive. What exactly should I be moving? Do I move the application itself? And how do I tell FCP where to find all of my media? Sorry if it seems like a stupid question, I'm relatively new to Macs.
    Thanks!

The application remains in the Applications folder.
The best way is to copy the projects by duplicating them to the new drive. Do that from inside the application. Duplicate the projects with all referenced events. When all the projects and media have been copied and are working correctly then you can delete them from your internal drive.
Caution: make sure the media is actually in the events you're duplicating. If not, use the organize events function, or you will lose the media.

  • What size should my movies be to not get cut off?

I am making a tutorial DVD. I used Snapz Pro to record a bunch of screen capture movies and then edited them together in FCP and exported them as 1024x768 animation movies and they look great. Now I want to burn them to DVD. When I take them as they are and put them on a DVD the top and bottom of the screen get cut off. Can I just resize the movies in QT pro to a different size so they won't cut off? If so what size? Is there a better way?

    Scott,
A mix of this QuickTime Pro: How to Make Picture-in-Picture at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42633 and the following procedure I put together a couple of years ago to use the small movies produced by still digital cameras in iMovie/iDVD:
    1. Create a 640 x 480 black mask with a slightly lighter black 320 x 240 center in Photoshop. Save it as a JPG file.
    2. Open your DiMage X movie in QuickTime Pro. Open the saved mask in another QuickTime Pro player (at 15 fps).
    3. Select the mask clip and edit->select all and then edit->copy
    4. Select the DiMage X clip and then edit -> add scaled the mask
    5. Next, select movie -> get movie properties
    6. Select video 2 on the left box and layers on the right box. Set the layers to 1 (that moves the mask to the back).
    7. Select video one on the left box and size on the right box. Click on adjust. Red hack marks appear around the video. Click on the picture (not the mark) and center the video on the lightened 320 x 240 box.
    8. The video may not completely cover the lighter box, but the hack marks should line up. When you view the movie, if you used a "slightly lighter" black for the center area, you won't a notice a lighter area when played in iDVD.
    9. Export it as a DV stream. Bring it into iDVD.
will give you an idea on how to proceed. Obviously, you will need to come up with your own mask and cut-out size - 640x480 ISN'T what YOU want.

  • IWeb '09 / Mobileme Gallery Widget / No Albums or Movies / Snow Leopard

This is my first time trying to use the Mobileme Gallery Widget in iWeb '09 and all I can get it to do is tell me "No Albums or Movies". I have non password / no hidden galleries published via iPhoto '09 and iMovie '09. I even tried publishing via me.com. Nothing. It publishes my site to mobileme just fine I just upgraded to Snow Leopard this afternoon if that makes any difference. I had never tried this feature before today so I can't say if it worked prior to the upgrade or not. I do use a personal domain and iWeb does see this and can publish the site to it but all the site has is my test blank page and an blank mobileme widget in it. Any ideas?

I'd say Snow Leopard brought it on.
Thanks. I'll try avoiding those features until there's an update to SL and/or iWeb'09. Happily iWeb09 with SL deals fine with my website in its current rather featureless configuration so I'll keep it simple for now
