Should we upgrade PowerBook G4?

My wife has a last generation PowerBook G4 15" that she bought for her work 2 years ago. It was loaded with MS Office 2004 and some Adobe creative software such as Photoshop CS2 and Illustrator CS2, all licensed on her company which she doesn't work for anymore.
Recently we started thinking about upgrading to Leopard but we are also worrying about losing all the software that was once free to us. We want to be sure that there won't be any kind of performance issues for the computer or for the software. Just for your information, we upgraded the RAM to 2 GB and we have an external hard drive to back up the computer before upgrading to Leopard.
So, is there anyone out there who had problems, like losing installed software, or slowing down a perfectly running machine while trying to upgrade to Leopard?

I upgraded my iMac G4 to 1.25Gbytes of memory, then I did the "erase and install" upgrade variation. It's running great without any problems. MS Office 2004 reinstallation is "drag and drop" so it shouldn't be a problem. I cannot say much for Adobe CS2. I have it as well but I haven't reinstalled it on my iMac. I agree with W.L., you'll probably need the Adobe installation disk for CS2, but I could be wrong.
I do not recommend the "upgrade" installation procedure. Do either "Erase and install" or "Archive and install".
Tomorrow I am upgrading my son's PowerBook G4 with memory, then Leopard. I'll let you know how it goes. BTW, be careful with the screws on the memory cover. They are very very small. You definitely DO NOT want to strip the #0 phillips head.

  • Buying Opinion - Upgrade Powerbook vs MacBook Pro

I'm thinking I may try to upgrade my laptop as my main objective is to get CS4 right now but I have a friend who is selling his MacBook Pro for $900. What's your opinion as you would know better what Macs can handle? My main problem is speed especially with CS programs and I do need a new battery. I have a PowerPC G5 Dual with a large glossy screen for my most intense work that I can do from home. But I like to have a laptop that I can take on the road for working on projects. It's mostly for Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign. So no animation or gaming purposes.
    I have:
    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 17"
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,9
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.5f3
    His computer:
2.16 ghz Core 2 Duo Processor
    3 GB RAM (Newly upgraded)
320 GB 7200rpm HDD (Newly upgraded)
Dual Layer Superdrive (DVD and CD recorder)
    15.4" 1440x900 Widescreen Glossy Display
    128MB ATI x1600 Video
    DVI-VGA adapter Cable
    Apple Wireless Remote
    Brand new battery
It includes OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard, iLife 09, and iWork 09, all part of the "Mac Box Set," so this is all legal software.
The original box, discs and documentation are all included.
The condition of the system is excellent with one minor exception - there seems to be a very slight bend in the casing underneath the expresscard slot. One of my photos shows it.
Do you think it's doable with what I have (and what could I do?) or should I go with the newer MacBook and save myself the headache? What's the main difference with the computers?
    Thanks everyone!
    Tiffany

Re: Buying Opinion - Upgrade Powerbook vs MacBook Pro
You can get a brand new MacBook for $999 so don't bother with the used one. For the price difference, save up and buy new MacBook Pro for $1199. Faster than Macbook. Shop around. Everyone is discounting. You might get free ram upgrades (unless you're getting free ram, buy separately and install yourself), free shipping. Try Epercom, CDW and Small Dog in addition to Apple. If you go to Apple store don't be shy about asking for a 10% business discount. I asked and got one for my imac last summer.
He's offering it at $900...does that seem like a fair price for what I'd get?

  • Should I upgrade to 10.4.3?  and QT 7.03?

I am currently running Tiger 10.4.2 on a new 17 inch Powerbook.
I am also running QT 7.01 and ITunes 4.9
Should I upgrade to 10.4.3, QT 7.03 and iTunes 6.01?
When I lasted checked a month or so ago, people were having problems.
And now I am seeing posts asking how to downgrade to 10.4.2?
Are most people having no problems with the updates?
What is the best way to update to 10.4.3 etc? Via on-line software update? Or by manually downloading and installing the updates?

I have been running OS X 10.4.3 since it was released on three Macs (no problems). I also have the latest versions of QT and iTunes installed. I always use software update and allow OS X to select the relevant updates.
As a precaution, run permission repair before and after software updates. Also, I suggest you have a good backup/retreat strategy. I make bootable clones of both my iMacs on an external firewire drive (using SuperDuper - www.shirt-pocket.com - $20 US).
You will find that people who post here have real problems, but they are normally not representative of the Mac user community as a whole. It is roughly akin to visiting a hospital and seeing that all people are sick.
If your current system is stable, you should be able to update without problems.
    Best of success.

  • Oxford922 Panther bug . Should I upgrade to Tiger ?

I am running out of space and need a new external drive . The Fantom Titanium was recommended on another thread but at their site .
    http://www.fantomdrives.com/
    I found this warning .
    http://www.micronet.com/support/fwpanthercomp.asp
I have a tiger disc for my powerbook . Should I upgrade or was this fixed with 10.3.9 and could I even upgrade with just 3gigs left ?
Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Panther eMac

I feel like I'm barking up a lot of trees with no info in them .
I'm hearing from a lot of disscussions that the drives with the Oxford 911 or 922 chipsets are essential for audio storage . One guy says he likes the Fantom Titanium but they don't have the Oxford . The Glyph seems like the best for audio but it is just way to expensive .

  • Upgrading powerbook G4 15"

    gurus,
hi! it's my very first post and also my first time using apple powerbook G4 15". i'm a newbie so pls bear with me.
I wanted to upgrade but i have no idea where to start. Below is the complete specification of my powerbook G4.
    Powerbook G4 15"
    Mac OS X Version 10.5.4
    1.67Ghz Power PC G4
    512MB DDR SDRAM
Should i upgrade the memory first or the OS or hard drive i really don't know the answer. i am only using it for personal use particularly facebook, yahoo etc.
What is recommended latest OS since i currently using OS X Version 10.5.4?
Excuse my tons of question. Anticipating your advice.
    Thanks in advance.

You can update your operating system at no cost to version 10.5.8, which would give you all the security and other small updates that brought that next-to-latest major OS version to its final evolution.
There are no longer any 7200RPM hard drives in production that would work in your Powerbook — the last of them were discontinued two or three years ago, and when new ones are found on back shelves now, they are offered for sale at outlandish prices not justified in any way by their performance. None was ever larger than 100GB, which may be the same size you have in your Powerbook now (1.67GHz Powerbooks were shipped with 80GB, 100GB and 120GB drives). So installing a 160GB, 250GB or 320GB 5400RPM drive would be an upgrade for you, but only in terms of its capacity. It would not perceptibly improve performance.
Adding RAM is the only upgrade that would improve your PB's performance significantly.

  • I regularly have 15 MB of Available Memory - Should I upgrade or is there an issue I should solve first? EtreCheck report pasted below

    Hello,
My MacBook is running super slow. I downloaded Memory Clean from the App Store and I regularly have 15MB or free memory available.
In Activity Monitor I usually see the following:
    ~800 MB kernel_task
    ~500 MB softwareupdated
    ~500 MB Image Capture Extension
    In Console, I see mdworker.bundle errors attributed to UID's: 501, 503, 1422
My current UID from what I can tell is 502. Other UID's left over from various upgrades are 89, 99, 235.
Lastly, Drive Genius is giving me a Drive Integrity Warning. But I can't create a bootable clone.
I have no idea if the above problems are related. I'd like to think I just run a lot of stuff that eats my memory and upgrading the RAM would be the easy path. What say you all?
    -Jeff

  • Should I upgrade my 2008 iMac from 10.6 to 10.7 or 10.8?

I'm wondering (a) should I upgrade at all and what to and (b) if I do can I go back to 10.6 somehow?
    (a) I would like to have increased connectivity between my iMac and iOS devices via iCloud, and I like the new Mail app in Lion/ML. Anyone got experience with older iMacs running Lion or ML?  How well do they cope?  Any advantages or disadvantages of note?
If a lot of people find that performance is really bad on similar iMacs the following is not relevant. (I have increased RAM to 4GB (max) and have a 320 GB HDD)
I was thinking of some ways to upgrade that might allow me to just see how the iMac handles a new OS and still allow me to go back to SL if it slows down too much.
    1. Install Lion on a partition.  If it works well install Lion onto whole system, if not delete partition.
    2. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6 via a Time Machine backup (doubt that would work).
    3. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6  via a backup in other software (CCC for example – which I don't have yet – might work?).

First check that your Mac meets the System requirements for Lion...
    Lion Tech Specs  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/SP629
    See here to Buy it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
If so Contact Apple in your Country to Purchase a Lion Download code...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    In the US...
    1-800-MY-APPLE or 1-800-676-2775
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
Also... Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using... Also note that Rosetta is no longer supported in Lion.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
You should also consider more RAM... Lion is a hungry beast...
You can use these Links to check which RAM is suitable for your Mac...

If in the UK... Go to http://www.crucial.com

  • Should I upgrade the hardware or replace the laptop?

I have a late 2006 model Macbook that I received in Decemeber 2006. I'm interested in purchasing a new Macbook, but am also wondering whether I should instead upgrade the hardware? The Macbook seems to always be pushing itself harder than it should as the fan is always audible and always has been, so much so that when I use Skype the person on the other line can't hear me very well because of it. It heats up like crazy too at every use. Sometimes it runs so slowly that it can take 45 minutes to even just close some tabs and windows down as it has to think about it first (spinning beachball). I'm in Uni at the moment and have been for a while now and would love for my laptop to run like it used to when I first got it, or even be able to update it's software (but even that's not possible because it's hardware isn't compatible). I've transferred a lot of my data onto an external harddrive to free up some space and help it run better, but it's still pretty slow in comparison to today's computers.
    Any ideas?

i would suggest going for a new Macbook or a refurbished one from Apple.
normally, i would suggest upgrading the RAM and swap the hard drive for a SSD.  unfortunately, that might not even work for you.
once you upgrade your apps to the current version, they tend to be more memory and processor intensive.
so upgrading your macbook might be a waste of money.
again, those are my thoughts and you can either go with it or ignore it.....
If you own a late 08 Macbook Uni like I do, then I would suggest to upgrade the RAM and go with a SSD to give it a couple of years more but because you have a 2006, buying a new one would be a better option especially if you want to install Mountain Lion.
    good luck..

  • Should I upgrade to Tiger from Panther on a 6 year old G4?

Although my machine excedes the minimum requirements for Tiger, I have held off on upgrading for a long time, because when it first came out, I heard reports that it was much slower than Panther on older macs.
I now, however, have two pieces of software that I want to run that require Tiger, so I am debating again whether to upgrade. My computer is stable and runs well, and I don't want to hurt that or slow it down significantly.
My computer is a dual 550Ghz G4 with 640 mb of Ram and about 5 Gigs of free boot drive space. I did get the DVD rom drive installed when I bought it, so that shouldn't be a problem.
    Should I upgrade?

    Hi Matthew,
since you already run 10.3.9 it does not make much sense to upgrade. Many of the new features of Tiger will not run on your computer due to limited hardware resources. If you are happy with Panther, stay with it until you buy a new computer. My G3/900 iBook runs happily with Panther as well.
BTW: 10.4. Tiger is NOT slower than Panther, in some situations it is even faster.

  • GMA X3100 Macbook-Should I upgrade to Snow Leopard?

I've read all kinds of horror stories about this Graphics Card GMA X3100 and Snow Leopard. I see that SL doesn't support it. I'm running ok on 10.5.8.
Should I upgrade or not? I'm mostly doing audio in Logic Pro and will be doing more HD video in iMovie for YouTube etc.
I like to hook up an older monitor to mirror my Macbook's. I've read where people have had problems with this after upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6.
Should I stay on 10.5 or will I get any benefit from 10.6? I'd like to get as close to up to date as possible if it'll be good for me. Thanks!

  • Should I upgrade sistem on S660

I recently bought a Lenovo S660 from China. I live in Serbia, and this model is not sold in my country.
    - Android version 4.2.2,
    - baseband version S660 V26, 02/28/2014 17:50
    - Build number S660_S026_140228. In settings / about phone / no option to upgrade.
On the official website there is version 18/03/2014. Should I upgrade now or wait KitKat in September. I have a little problem with the proximity sensor. When I finish the call Phone does not turn on my screen to end the call.
Could someone explain how to perform system upgrade on this phone.
    thank you

Hi, I have had the same problem. But, I follow this instructions and now I have Kitkat 4.4.2 with multilingual software and Google playstore works.

  • HT1338 I have an older macbook pro running OSX 10.6.8. Should I upgrade the OS?

    SHOULD I UPGRADE FROM 10.6.8?

10.7 or above will not run your PPC based programs, so that's a cost.
10.7 or above will need 4GB or more RAM, so that's a cost.
10.7 or above is slower than 10.6, so that's a cost in performance
If your machine is out of AppleCare, then if 10.7/10.8 hoses your machine somehow (like it did mine), then your screwed and have to buy a new one.
If the machine originally came with 10.4 or 10.5, then you certainly don't want to upgrade past 10.6.8 and slow it down, just run it until the wheels fall off.
I only advise Early 2011 machines and later to upgrade to 10.8, then only under AppleCare.
Apple is issuing security updates for 10.6, installed anti-virus, and it has about 30% version market share, so your safe for now.

I am trying to get my system current.  I am now running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8 (I believe this is "Snow Leopard").  What should I upgrade to?

The current system is OS X 10.8 which is downloadable from the App store, which you can upgrade to directly if your system meets the system requirements.  Note that starting with OS X 10.7, PowerPC-based programs will no longer run. So, for example, people with Office 2004 got surprised when they upgraded and found that the older Office programs would no longer run. Newer Office programs are OK.
