Should wifi be made off when setting up an thernet connection in mavericks
I am having slow internet over Broadband on my iMac purchased in Novemver-2013. Both Wifi and Ethernet are "on" in my machine. I understand that Wifi is much slower than Ethernet. Then should Wifi be made off?
Wi-Fi is about 2-3 times slower that Ethernet and having bot on can occasionally cause problems, so I'd keep it turned off.

When not in use should wifi be switched off?
When wifi is not in use should it be switched off for enhanced security?
You could turn off the wireless if you really are concerned that someone may be trying to crack your network. But, if that were the case, you would want to be changing the wireless network password on a regular basis.
The possible downside to turning off the WiFi on the AirPort Extreme is that it is not nearly as easy to turn it back on.
Here is what you have to do:
1) Open AirPort Utility
2) Click on the AirPort Extreme
3) Click Edit
4) Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next page
5) Change the setting for Network Mode to Create a wireless network
6) Edit the name of the wireless network
7) Set the Wireless Security to WPA2 Personal
8) Enter the wireless network password
9) Verify the wireless network password
10) Click Update
11) Wait a minute for the AirPort to restart
Quite tedious for most folks, but it is your call. -
Wifi automatically shuts off when ethernet is connected, but I don't want that.
Hi all,
I'm the second user of a company-owned MacbookPro (circa 2008) running Lion. I occasionally need to connect my machine to both ethernet and wifi networks simultaneously. However, every time I do that, a script kicks in somewhere that not-so-helpfully turns off the Wifi network for me.
I get the following popup in the upper right corner:
http://imgur.com/5X6MW
Airport Status
Wired network detected. Toggling Wireless Off.
There is a similar popup that says it is turning the Wifi on if there is no ethernet cable connected.
Does anyone know where this is coming from and how to disable it? I'm guessing the previous user of the laptop installed a script, but I haven't been able to find it. I've been using this laptop since before Lion came out, and I don't remember it happening before Lion, but that may be because I didn't try doing two networks during that time period. It became noticable and annoying when I installed Lion though. At first I suspected this was some default behvaior in Lion, but I've googled for the text given in the message and didn't find any Lion-related complaints.
It looks a bit like a growl notification, but it happens even if I kill growl. I don't have anything that would obviously cause this in
System Preferences-->Users&Groups-->Login Items
The closest thing I can find on the web is stuff like this:
http://www.macworld.com/article/154976/2010/10/turnoffairportscripts.html
Explaining how to add a script that automatically turns Wifi on or off. I've looked on my machine for scripts in the places suggested though and don't see anything.
I've also grepped all over ~/Library and /System/Library for 'network detected', but didn't turn up anything.
Other places I should look? Could there be an automater script saved somewhere that would do this?
Thanks,
MalcolmAh ha! Found it. (Looked for it several times over the last few months, and of course finally tracked it down 30 minutes after posting the question).
My company network admins included that script in a package of stuff that got installed... probably when I was renewing my VPN certificate or something.
/Library/LaunchAgents had a reference to a folder elsewhere, and when I looked there I found togglewireless.sh
All squared away now... Thanks for reading. -
PowerMac G4 switches off when set to sleep
My venerable PowerMac G4 works just fine. However since a few weeks it switches itself off when put to sleep. The switch-off is a crash, like the power plug has been unplugged. An immediate restart doesn't work, the light just goes on for a second or two, afterwards the whole power vanishes again. After a few minutes the Mac can be normally restarted.
When left of the Mac works perfectly and doesn't crash at all.
Sounds to me like a certain power which is to be supplied by the internal power suplly just during sleep-mode is gone. Any ideas?
Thankshi,
thanks for your suggestions. I trashed the com.apple.powermanagement.plist file but there was no autowake file. The behaviour remained the same. I then reset the PMU as you suggested - still no change.
In the meantime I got another problem: the mouse is behaving erratically, the pointer is moving in jumps or not at all. The mouse shows the same behaviour when plugged in to my PowerBook - it must be faulty. I have just ordered a new Mighty Mouse to rule out any issue deriving from a broken mouse. I will also change the Lithium Battery on the motherboard even given the voltage is at 3,64 V, which should be sufficient.
Do you have any further suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
hi wolfman62--
i would try a couple of things. first, go to
/library/preferences and trash a couple of files in
the folder called systemconfiguration --
com.apple.powermanagement.plist and
com.apple.autowake.plist. then restart the
computer. test to see if there is any change. if
not, try resetting the pmu. to do this, shut off
all power to the computer and disconnect any
peripherals. then remove the power cord from where
it goes into the back of the machine into the power
supply. then remove the side panel and plastic air
deflector if your model has one. then look on the
bottom left corner of the logic board under the
bottom set of ram banks. there is a little square
with a button on it. (you might have to remove a
fan in order to find it.) ground yourself by
touching some metal and then letting go, and then
press the button on the logic board counting one one
thousand, and then release it. do not press it
twice as it can blow the chip. then put everything
back together and see if there is any difference.
let me know if either of those things makes any
difference. [ 8 ) ] -
Wifi automatically turned off when phone sleeps in iOS 5.1.1?
Before, I used iOS 5.0.1 and wifi would keep turned on when the phone sleeps if I turn off data. This way I could always receive instant notifications. But then I sold the verizon phone and bought a used FU one, installed with iOS 5.1.1. Now wifi is automatically turned off when phone the sleeps, even when data is off. Is this how it works? Because I want to use wifi, even when the phone is off. Thanks.
I have had and iphone 4 for the last couple of years with all the different IOS upgrades and never experienced such a thing!? I do not have a cell data plan (I even have it switched of in settings) so I rely on wifi and, even when the phone was in standby, the wifi was constantly on! and I received e-mails and skype calls as they arrived, So wifi was certainly ON!
However, since the last upgrade to IOS 6.0 the wifi is indeed being turned off when the phone goes to sleep mode, which is very annoying!
Any fix/workaround?
Thanks -

You can turn it off and charge it or turn it on and charge it. No need to turn it off actually.

It depends on the charge level before start charging. -
Sound drops off when using hdmi outport to connect computer to an AV reciever
Satellite M640,I5 2410 processor, windows 7HP. After about three minutes the sound drops off when connected to the av reciever through the hdmi outport. If I touch the trackpad the computer reconnects for another three minutes and then disconnects. If I touch the the trackpad about every two minutes the computer stays connected indefinetly. This problem does not occur if I use the computer to play an audio CD. Any fix suggestions.

Iphone switches off when using apps needing a connection
Hi all, my first post, really hope you can help!! My iphone has been giving me trouble for some time now. It started to turn off when i am connected, via wifi or 3g, doesnt matter, it shows the little circle loader, and turns off. Also i have restored various times, and the apps simply wont open, the screen flickers and nothing happens. What could it be??
ThanksMore details: My phone turned itself off today for no reason, while in my pocket.
Also, I tried using the facebook app and as usual it turned the phone off, as it does anytime an internet connection is used... but I noticed when it turns back on that it says the battery is less than 20% when its freshly been recharged... then I restart and the battery status comes back to normal.
I'm trying a complete format, and a start from zero. Will post the results. -
IPhone should not be switched off when screen is locked
Why we can switch off iPhone when it is locked? when phone is locked it should not allow to switch off.
Is this a bug or desired functionality?
Also I just found that if someone else register my iPhone with his/her apple id then it will never show any alert. So find my iPhone app is total waste. This app is good only if your phone is registered with your apple id.
Hope apple knows this problem, if not then this is really hopeless and not acceptable from them.
Thanks,
Yogi1st of all, tyvm for your reply, really appreciated
question though, are you 100% sure about it ? -
I have a brand new, just out of the box, ipod touch that will not connec to my home wifi. The connection works with all other devices.
What happens when you try to connect?
Error messages?
Does the iPod see the network?
Have you tried other networks?

Custom white balance looks bad/off when set on the 5d Mark iii
I got my Mark iii in June and every time I set a custom white balance it doesn't look right. I have used both a purchased grey card and a white piece of paper, both look bad. When I set it on my Rebel Xs it looks perfect, no adjustments needed in post processing, but not the case with the Mark iii. Shouldn't it be the other way around, considering the price tag on the iii ?
Canon "tags" RAW images with meta-data regarding white balance (and other info) but does not actually alter the image. Depending on what you use to process the images on the computer, it can read those tags and decide to apply it's interpretation. But those white balance adjustments would be applied by your computer software (assuming they are being applied -- not all software does this) -- and not by the camera.
I use Aperture (Apple's pro photography software), which has a camera profile for each camera. The profiles can compensate if, for example, one camera is naturally "cooler" than another.

HP Officejet 6500a Should I turn it off when not in use?
Is it better too turn off the printer when not in use for short periods say 2-4 hours? or days? (the manual does not explain this adequately) Thanks
Hi,
I normally turn my printers off to save few cents of electricity. No point to keep printers on unless you are having/doing business (expecting fax or something). Even at work, for a long weekend, we always turn our printers off.
Regards.

Airport on or off when done with session
Hello all. I'm new to the wireless worid and was wondering should I turn airport off when not connected. I usually let the computer sleep when not using it.
1. D-link wireless G router (works great so far)
2. D-link tech support says I should let it run a while to make certain it is stable befoe I set up security (wep) (wpa). Which one should I use and how do I do it?
Thanks,
MagsI'm new to the wireless worid and was wondering should I turn airport off when not connected. I usually let the computer sleep when not using it.
You can, but there's no need to turn off the AirPort connection while the system is in "sleep" mode.
2. D-link tech support says I should let it run a while to make certain it is stable befoe I set up security (wep) (wpa). Which one should I use and how do I do it?
It makes sense to have your wireless network stablized before turning on wireless security, so the technician gave good advice there. You should always use WPA when the this option is available as WEP is no longer considered "secure."
To set up WPA on your D-Link would require that you access the D-Link's web-based administration utility with your web browser. Depending on the D-Link model, you would point your web browser to: 192.168.1.1 and enter the administrator userID/password. This is all provided with the documentation that came with the router.
If you still need assistance setting it up, please provide the router model number and I can download a copy of the User Guide to walk you thru the process. -
Wifi keeps going off
It's normal for WiFi to turn off when the phone goes to sleep if the phone is not connected to power; this is to preserve battery life. Is it happening at some other time?
