Shouldn't it burn cd-r's?

Hi all
Had by G4 emac for some time and want to burn small video on to cd. presume I can do - my machine is
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-117D
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
I have tried verbatim cd-r & cd-rw but it ejects them and wont burn. Hope I'm not totally confused but I thought I could burn video to appropriate cd?
Should I try dvd-r and what chances it'll burn any better than cd's?
Any suggestions most welcome
Darryl

I seem to recall there's a little known format called MiniDVD or cDVD which consists of a DVD-quality (ie MPEG2) track burned onto a 600-700Mb CD.
As you will imagine, you only get about 5 mins of video on such a disc, and I seem to recall that I experimented with these back in the days before I had a DVD-Recorder (I used Toast, I think) - but back then I was only making 5minute iMovies from my iPhoto library.
My efforts would play in Apple DVD Player, but not in my standalone DVD player attached to my TV. I gave up on the format as soon as I got a DVD-Recorder, so I never really pinned down the problems.
You could try saving out from iDVD as a Disc Image then burning that to a CD with either Disk Utility or Toast and see how you get on.
But at the end of the day, you're better off (better compatibility) using DVD-R, just make DVDs containing several 5minute fils to make it worth the disc!

Edit: Just noticed this is in the iDVD4 section, to burn a disc image from iDVD4 you need to use the famous hack (search and you shall find) - or iDVD 5+

  • Creating a new library from a DVD Burn library

I have my entire library of photos on my iMac in iPhoto 6.0.6. I recently spent quite a bit of time cleaning up what had been a rather messy, unorganized, photo library. My organizational method consisted of consolidating old film rolls which were inherited from original imports that were in different folders by moving groups of photos into single "film rolls" for older years and making fewer rolls for the last few years. I then went back through and corrected photo dates for a bunch of images that were scanned in, etc. I downloaded Keyword Manager, which I like a lot, and applied keywords to every photo in my collection. I also deleted a bunch of old photos which were too similar to better shots or simply not worth keeping. Once I finished all of this I had my new library consisting of 1892 pictures, which I hoped to backup and allow to serve as a "gold master copy" of all of my photos to date. In browsing the database in Finder, I noted that there were a lot of images in the "Original" folders that were not in the library. Some of these were images I had deleted in the library. (I know better than to do anything through the finder other than browse. I know that to maintain integrity of the library it is necessary to only perform actions through iPhoto.) I did a database rebuild and asked iPhoto to recover orphaned files which did nothing. I really wanted this database to be in pristine condition since I was using it as my master copy, but could not figure out how to do away with old unwanted images in the "originals" folders. I went ahead and created a DVD library with "Share -> Burn", and voila, the new iPhoto Library that was created on the DVD appeared to be "clean" with only the 1892 pictures in my viewable library existing in the Originals folder. OK, so far so good. I then took the DVD I had burned and attempted to replicate my library on my iBook which had a clean install of iLife '06 on it. When I launched iPhoto with the DVD in place it showed me an empty hard drive library and the burned library from the DVD. At first I attempted to just copy individual Film Rolls from the DVD to the local library. While this worked in bring the images over, the keywords became all jumbled. The resulting photos would have keywords attached which did not belong to them and were different from what was on the DVD. I then deleted the iBook library and tried copying the entire iPhoto Library folder from the DVD to the iBook via the Finder. When I relaunched iPhoto, presto all the photos were in my local library with keywords, film rolls and other metadata intact. However in browsing the library I came across a few photos which would cause iPhoto to crash when I tried to edit them. This was a consistent behavior on specific images. Reading through the forums I came across the color profile bug and through testing verified that this was not the problem. Meanwhile back on the iMac I could edit the photos in question with no problem. I verified that the image had not been corrupted during the DVD burn as well. The files are identical between the iMac and the iBook. I know this is a long drawn out post, but if anybody has read this far, here are my questions ...
    1) What is the best way to go about creating a "clean" database with internal integrity after a doing a lot of edits and metadata changes? Shouldn't the burn to DVD do what I want?
    2) How come when I copied subsets of my library over to a new machine from the DVD, the keywords seemed to get all jumbled? Is it a matter of indexing them? If I added all the keywords to an empty library before copying the images over, would it work? Is there not a way to just copy portions of a DVD library into another library?
    3) Any ideas on the crash while attempting to edit problem? The image will load as a thumbnail, and then briefly flas the full size image, before iPhoto crashes and pops up a dialog asking if I want to restart it.
    Thanks for staying with me!

Problems solved with iPhoto Manager's rebuild function! Thanks to Brian Webster of Fat Cat Software. Great program!

  • UJ-846 Superdrive unable to burn DVD+R

    Hello,
It seems that I can't burn anything on any DVD+R with my superdrive (ref. UJ-846). I've tried with iDVD (initially I wanted to burn one of my home-made movie on DVD), Disc Burner, DiscBlaze, Dragon Burn. Each time, the answer is the same : media is not writable. Is it normal for a "Superdrive" advertised as "Universal"?
Is there a way to solve this issue, for the moment I don't have any other media within reach and anyway, not to be able to burn a DVD+R is like not to be able to burn anything...

More info after some additional testing:
Burned a few DVDs using the internal UJ-846 and Pioneer DVR-109 (in a firewire case). The source image was a Tiger DVD (from an earlier Mac). I used Burnz and Disk Utility to burn two DVD+R's (HP brand) in the DVR-109 and Toast and Disk Utility to burn the same brand discs (and a DVD+RW) in the UJ-846.
In the case of the DVD+RW, I received the message that it could not calibrate the device to the media (both in Toast and Disk Utility).
From the DVR-109 burns, my old G3 iBook spit out the resulting discs as unreadable. The iMac (UJ-846) did read the discs but took about 30 seconds from the time of disc insertion until the window showing the Installer appeared completely. The DVR-109 displayed this window 16 seconds after insertion.
I then burned (using Toast) a data DVD using the same DVD+R media. This disc was burned as "Mac & PC" hybrid. The contents of the disc were folders full of audio files. Again, the G3 iBook refused to read the disc while the UJ-846 took about twice as long as the DVR-109 to mount and open the disc.
Finally, I burned (using the DVR-109) a Verbatim DVD-R "white-top" printable (8X, pn94654, hub printable, no stacking ring) using the Tiger image file as the source. The resulting DVD was not only was readable in the old G3 iBook but booted it, as well.
I should note that these discs, when burned with my G5's internal burner (DVR-117 which, I believe, is the DVR-110 but with Apple firmware) would work fine for data (and boot discs) but never produced a video DVD that would play in my set-top box.
Now, just to be a bit more thorough, I dug up some DVD+R's that I've burned over the past few years. Sonuvagun! Not one of them can be read by the G3 iBook's optical drive. So it's apparent that the old drive just doesn't like +R of any brand (Ridata, HP, JVC).
Okay, so what have we (I) learned from all this (if anything)?
It is tempting to say that the results with the old G3 iBook might be ignored because it is, after all, one of the first (500MHz) units produced and everything is much more compatible these days. However, shouldn't a burned DVD (of either the + or - persuasion) be seen as simply a DVD by the Mac once it's been burned? My Intel iMac shows a "+R" or "-R" as part of the disc's icon yet these are =burned= discs. Perhaps I do not remembers when this behavior had changed but I recall that the "+" or "-" ID was only on discs that had yet to be burned; subsequent to burning, this ID was dropped. (or so I recall...)
Could it be that the "+R" compatibility claims are overstated? But what of the "+RW" disc that gave the "can't calibrate..." error? Should I chalk it up simply to media incompatibility? I have some "+RW" media (HP brand, identified by Toast as "PHILIPS.041."); testing that media results in a successful erase and burn/verify using the UJ-846; no "calibrate..." error as experienced with the Memorex +RW's. Toast sees the disc as a 4X and offers to burn it at that speed but it is really burning at 2X based upon the slow speed of the countdown in Toast's window.
I remember reading something about "book-type" when I used to burn with a PC; perhaps that's an issue? Or maybe that's just a red herring.
In any case, I'll have to do some more testing with a few more older Macs to see if they can read the older DVD+R & +RW I already have and any new ones I burn with the U-846 and DVR_109 using Intel OSX in my iMac.
    Comments and suggestions always welcome.

  • Backup stops burning

Having been unable to use file sharing to move my iTunes library from an old PC (XP Home Edition), to my new iMac, I resorted to making backup data disks. Tried first with DVD record drive. Although iTunes recognized the drive when I chose it, it will not write to it. (Will start initializing a DVD-R disk, then eject it and ask me to please insert a blank disk. Tried other fresh disks to no avail.) Drive works otherwise and still burns DVDs OK.
Switched to the Dell's other drive to try burning to CDs. Process works smoothly until I get to the fifth or sixth disk (16 are need for entire library), whereupon the drive stops burning and begins ejecting every disk I insert, telling me to "please insert blank disk."
I cannot figure out why this happens, but I'm starting to believe that the PC somehow senses it's being replaced and is making a desperate bid for survival.
My iPod's set up for Mac, so I can't use that. I'm wondering if I shouldn't just burn as many disks as I can, delete what's been backed up, and try burning what's left, five disks at a time.

Meanwhile, I solved the Problem by uninstalling the following components about "System" / "Software" / "uninstall" in the given order:
    itunes
    QuickTimes
    Apple Software Update
    AppleMobileDeviceSupport
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
    Then I restarted Windows.
Next Step was downloading itunes and installing iTunes again.
Then I connected my iphone  (3GS) and backup started.
The hint came from the german c't - Magazin, No. 19, 2011 page 162.
p.s.: this solved the problem AppleMobiledevicesupport.exe needing permanently about 50% CPU-Usage, too.

  • Missing assets - HELP!

I work for an advertising comany that does movie theatre advertising for movie theatre screens. I am utilizing DVDSP4 (4.0.3) to author the DVDs.
Here is my problem: After creating tracks, and matching up the graphics and audio, I simulate it. Everything is working great and looks fine. Then I Advance Burn (Build & Burn). I've tested the DVD in a DVD Player (my PS2, regular home DVD Player, & a portable at work) and I get a random "Asset Missing," plus the file name, during playback. I go back to DVDSP, make sure everything is checked and lit green (which is). I simulate again...works fine. I've deleted and inserted the "missing" assets. Re-burned. Same problem. (It shouldn't even burn with missing assets, should it??)
Does anyone have any idea what is happening or have a solution? I've re-install the software (I've deleted preferences and receipts first), and then upgraded to 4.0.3. Has this problem associated with updating to 10.4.6? It was working swiftly with 10.4.5. Anyone else having any issues?
Sorry for the long explanation. Thank you!!

  • My speedlite 600 ex-rt will turn on but it won't fire. Any suggestions?

My speedlite 600 ex-rt flash will turn on but it won't fire. The batteries work and were fully charged so that was not the problem. It also reads that it is ready to fire but no flash. It's about 1 year old, Is the flash worn out already or can it be fixed?

Does the test button turn red (I still have no idea why red means ready and green means it's still charging)?  Does it fire a test flash when you push it?  In answer to your question, no, the flash shouldn't be burned out yet, not even close.  Though, if it doesn't fire a test flash then something is wrong.  I know there have been reports of some issues with rechargeables.  So much so that Canon actually contraindicated them in the labeling.  It's nonsense, but still, try fresh alkalines if the test flash isn't working just to be sure.

  • Late 2011 MBP Charger Port burnt.

Basically my charger port where my magsafe goes in is burnt (Randomly, God knows how.) and this is making my charger turn on/off randomly and it's starting to ruin my battery. Anything I can do or have done as this has literally happened on it's own, I haven't put a lighter to it or anything. It's just a really strange thing, half of the port is black, and there seems to be some on my charger as well. Either way very unhappy as it's under three years old and I don't overnight charge etc. but anyway, it shouldn't be burning itself alive!

I would try and clean the port as much as possible.  Examine the power adapter at the MBP connector.  The pins are spring loaded and should move freely.
The last option is a visit to an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.
    Ciao.

  • AE2020 Overheating..?

    Hai..
My AE2020 has this slight problem with overheating and by slight I mean CPU temperatures of around 80-105 degrees Celsius..  I'm no genius but I'm guessing that a T4500 processor shouldn't be burning up like that..?
The PC barely make's it to the OS before shutting down..
    Any idea's..?

Besides being clogged with dust, it is possible there are loose or broken screws that hold the heatsink assembly in its proper place on the CPU and GPU. That is exactly what happened to me with an older system. The next question to ask is this unit still in warranty? If not, open it up and start looking very carefully for a spider's nest, or loose or missing screws.
    Bye.

  • DVD Playback Issues with Dual Layer media

I have been using DVDSP for years now, and have rarely had any issues with burning my final projects to DVD. Any playback issues have usually been issues with players and +or-R media.
I have recently upgraded to a MacPro, and have been really stoked about being able to burn to Dual Layer media. My previous G5 didn't have a DL burner.
I have a large project that fills most the disk, and everything seems great in the software, and when playing the media files on the computer. But when I burn to disk, I have huge issues with playback on different DVD players, computers, etc. I have stuttering with menu's, freezing, and stuttering with playback of video.
I read that the issue could be because of the speed I'm burning at in DVDSP, so I saved as a disk image, and used disk utility to burn at a 4x speed. This seemed to help, but when I got to the end of the movie I had huge issues with stuttering/playback quality. So I burned another copy from the same disk image, and it wouldn't even play in my DVD player.
When I open the Video_TS folder from the DVDSP Build, and play right off my hard drive in the DVD software player, I don't have any of these issues.
So I'm guessing my problem is either my DVD media I'm using, or the burners on this new computer. I've burned DVD's on both burners (yes I have 2) and I still have the same problems.
I am using Memorex DVD+R DL and they are 8x.
Can anyone offer me some advice here. I really wish I could just hit burn and have a disk work. DL media isn't all that cheap and I don't know how many coasters I can make and keep my sanity.

I used compressor and I used the DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes setting. The bit rate is avg 6.2 and maximum 7.7. And yes I used ac3 audio.
When you say lowest speeds possible... shouldn't a burner that says it burns at a speed work at that speed? I'm cool with burning at a lower speed to get this thing to work, but why have a burner that burns DVD DL at 8x speed, when it doesn't work? Shouldn't it work? Why is it that it won't work?
If I get Verbatim DVD+R DL, can I burn at 8x speed with those?
When I burn in disk utility I used the "varify burned data" and everything checks out ok. So why do I have this issue. Just curious.

  • If we spend $15 on a movie, shouldn't we be allowed to do as we wish with it such as burn it to DVD??!!!!

Seriously, if we spend the money to see the movie in theaters, then pay for the movie on ITunes, why can't we put it on a DVD to watch in the family room? What doesn't make sense here? Or am I just sounding selfish? Because I want to be able to use my money wisely, and if I can buy a movie online, watch it when I go on a trip with out hauling a cd case with movies, then relax with the kids n watch it on a big screen it would be nice. Why pay twice for one movie if MAC or "Apple" says we can buy it on the comp, phone or iPod?!?
    -jonathon

Because iTunes can't create video DVDs from any content, and for most iTunes Store movies, iDVD and other dedicated video DVD creation software won't work with them.
Copy protected DVDs can't be created outside of a licensed replication facility.

  • While importing and burning some CDs, my entire library has disappeared.  Also, there no longer is a "burn file to disc" command in the File menu.  I have downloaded the latest version of itunes which restored only tracks I bought from the iTunes store.

Also, the "burn playlist to disc" command has disappeared from the File options.  I downloaded the latest version of iTunes but that only restored tracks I'd bought from the iTunes store.  I also tried setting up another logon.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be copied & renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to an earlier state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. If it has happened repeatedly you may want the earliest such file generated since the last iTunes upgrade.
If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

  • Preview of Ken Burns effect doesn't work with some pictures

I just recently installed a new graphics card (ATI Radeon 7500) on my Sawtooth, 1.2 GHz, so I could utilize the Ken Burns effect in imovie HD. It works but only partly. It works great but with some pictures the preview pane doesn't show the photo. What I see is a what looks like bad reception on an old TV (fuzzies and the picture is distorted so bad you can't even make it out). With other pictures the preview shows up fine. I'm sure I've loaded the drivers. What else can I do?

    Hi Tonyy13.
I am presenting the same problem. I can set the Ken Burns' effect while I am with the pictures before placing them in the Clip or Timeframe viewer. After placing them there, if I try to edit the picture (either by right clicking and choosing -edit picture or by control clicking and doing the same, I ended up with a black background. If you change the setting in this black ackground and update this changes they will be effective. So, you can change the slide duration, and everything in the sliders but without an image.
I was running System 10.3.9 and I thought this was the reason. Today, I went and bought Tiger but it didn't sove the problem. I do believe it is a bug in the program. According to Apple's Help and David Pogue's "The Missing Manual" this shouldn't happen.
If you solve this problem reply to this posting. If I did I will reply to your posting. Thank You.

  • Preview of Ken Burns Effect is a black screen!!

So, I am doing a movie for my parents, and I have 102 photos that I have loaded into IMovie. I loaded them in to the clips section, as I am not a huge fan of iPhoto personally. At first, no problems, but later, as I dragged photos into the playhead area, my photos wouldn't allow me to preview the Ken Burns Effect. I would drag them into the playhead, click on "Meda" button, and then select the Show Picture Settings button. The preview screen goes black as the effect scrolls through the process, disallowing me to see the preview. I have deleted the pictures from IMovie, re-inserted them, and started over (AAAARRRRRGGGGGG!), and it happened again.
Any Ideas? Thanks for the help!
Oh, and I have made no modifications to my machine (no new graphics card), and the pictures are all in .jpg format.

  • Why does iTunes tell me the burner is in use?

When trying to burn music discs from iTunes, I'm now getting a message that "the burner is already being used by another application." It's really strange because that's not the case and iTunes burned CDs just fine for years until this past week.
I get the message every time I burn, whether I'm using the internal drive or an external one. I have two external DVD burner drives as well as the internal, and they all produce the same message. Usually, if I try many times by putting the same CD back in and trying again, eventually it will work. But it shouldn't be giving that message at all, so I'd like to get to the bottom of the problem.
I'm using iTunes 11.1.4 on OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 on a Mac Pro. I've never before had a problem burning CDs from iTunes.
I have Toast installed, but not running at the time this happens. I checked to see if a Roxio background helper app was perhaps running that I didn't know about, but nothing is listed in the console nor in my Login Items list. There are no apps running that might have anything to do with burning discs, so I'm totally puzzled.
That isn't the only problem, either. When I'm finally successful in getting iTunes to actually succeed, when it burns a multi-part disc, it always rejects the second CD, claiming that I need to insert a blank disc, even though the one I'm putting in is indeed blank. The only workaround is to take the playlist and eliminate all the tracks that were already burned, then creating a new disc from the remaining tracks. Then, of course, I go through the whole "the burner is already in use" message until after several attempts to insert the disc and have it spit out again it finally works.
The message comes up whether I put the disc in before clicking the "Burn Playlist to Disc" menu item, or if I wait until it tells me to insert a blank disc. But when it successfully proceeds to the "Checking media" step, it's usually when the disc is inserted before starting the burn.
I have to suspect that some kind of helper app is the culprit but for the life of me I can't figure out which one. I've seen other reports of this same message and none of those people are likely to have some of the same specialized apps that I run like Drobo or ScanSnap Manager or ChronoSync. I'm kind of willing to try a process of elimination but the prospect of continually removing an app at a time and rebooting is not something I look forward to. Could take up the better part of a day, costing me hundreds of dollars in lost time, so if anyone has an inkling of where to start I would really appreciate it.

I hadn't checked this, so I disconnected the external drives and tried again. Same thing.
FWIW, I had already tried deleting the itunes preference files and that made no difference.

  • Strange behavior when "trying" to burn a disk.

At least I think this is strange behavior, following the instructions in the help viewer, topic "Backing up your music to a CD or DVD." One thing for sure, it's not burning a disc and it ain't telling me why.
I select the playlist and click "Burn Disc"
Requests a blank disc. I insert one.
    Message "checking media"
after about a minute, the disc ejects
Message "checking media" displays another 30 seconds
    No other messages displayed.
What the ??? Shouldn't it at least display an error message??

Whoops, sorry, this was while burning a playlist.
I've also tried some Pleomax CD disks (Samsung), with no luck. I've tried burning directly from iTunes, and from Toast 7.
Of the types I've tried, the Sony DVD's have been the best for me. Haven't tried many types though. Maybe I can get disks one at a time until I find a brand my burner likes.
Still, isn't it strange that there is NO error message? It just quits?
