Show Filename as column in iTunes

Is there a way to show the Filename as a column in the music listing in iTunes? I am going through a bunch of duplicate files and this would be an easy way to determin which file to dispose.
I have tried several duplicate file removing programs for iTunes. They have removed most of what I had, but I am down to a few hundred and would like to zip through them by hand.  I figure being able to easily see the file name would help greatly.
TIA,

I don't think there is.  You could try using a script to put the filename in some unused field.  "Show" isn't used for music but is available though it won't save outside of iTunes if you move the file.
This Applescript
http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=filenamestosongnames
puts the file name into the track name tag, but could probably be easily edited to put it elsewhere.  Of course it isn't going to be the whole path, just the file name.

  • My ipod is not showing up in the left hand column on itunes. I have tried the trouble shooting methods but nothing is working. My ipod nano also will not play.

My ipod nano is not showing up in the left hand column of itunes. It says connected on the ipod and I can find it in my computer but its not there on itunes. I need it as I want to restore it to factory settings. I have tried the troubleshooting methods that are on the Apple website but no luck.
Also my ipod is not playing. I found a way to upload all my music to my new computer. I followed a guide given to me on wiki and it worked. However, since then I cannot get the ipod to play. The menu is there, it turns on, all the playlists are visable but when I press play it does nothing or flicks briefly on to the page to play but then flicks back to the list again. I have tried all the troubleshooting on the Apple website but again nothing. I wanted to restore it to factory settings but to do this you have to be able to access the ipod in the left column on itunes which obviously I can't do. That was happening before the ipod stopped working. The two issues are separate.
Thanks and hope you can help me.

    I have sorted it myself!!
Ipod is now in the top right corner, last time I clicked on it, it ejected it but by clicking on the actual ipod icon then it brings up your ipod. I restored it to factory settings and synced all my music and it now works again. Hope this can help anyone who ends up with the same problem.

  • How can I delete an item from the main left column of iTunes?

I'd like to delete an item from the main left hand column in iTunes (the column containing the main headings LIBRARY, STORE, SHARED, PLAYLISTS etc etc). Under the first heading 'LIBRARY' appear the items Library, Music, Movies, iTunes U, Books, Apps and Ringtones. I'd like to remove the item "Library" from that list - it appears immediately after the heading "LIBRARY" and serves no purpose whatsoever. (Neither does it appear to cause any harm, I must say, just a nuisance.) This item does not appear in any of the iTunes viewing options or controls lists. Neither does it appear in iTunes in the other accounts on my Mac and I have yet to see it any other iTunes on any other Mac.
I've upgraded since about iTunes 8 assuming the problem would eventually disappear through the upgrades but it hasn’t, even through all the providedupgrade increments available for iTunes.
I'm assuming it's from something I've installed in my main user account at some stage and it entered this item in the iTunes app. But I can't see how to remove it. The only things I can remember installing are "iTunes Batch Column Renamer" and "Join Together", both if which are just Scripts and which I use fairly regularly, but I don't recall either of them installing that particular item.
Is there any folder I can navigate to to edit the list of items in that main left hand column of iTunes?
Many thanks in advance for any help offered.

on second thought, that you have an item "library" is indeed odd - there shouldn't be.
suggest you try removing iTunes completely (click here and follow the instructions), then reinstall it using the standalone installer from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
note this will not do anything to your media files, playlists, ratings, etc.
btw, you didn't install any 3rd party tools like this script:
    Change Hidden iTunes Preferences v2.4
This application will allow you to invoke hidden iTunes preferences:
    Show "Library" playlist
    Changing view setting is global
    Allow half-stars in ratings
    Hide "Ping" buttons
Show/hide arrow links -- to either search the iTunes Store or search your library
Load complete iTunes Store preview before playing
Create playlists for purchased song collections
Play songs while importing or converting
Create file names with track number
Maintain grid view for Search results
Option-click zoom button for Mini Player&
    Show buttons horizontally

  • Song title is incorrect in the "NAME" column in itunes, but correct at the top of the page for the song playing.

All of a sudden most of the song titles under the "NAME" column in itunes is incorrect.   When I click on the file name it plays a different song but it points to the correct song elsewhere on the list.   Also it shows the correct song name at the top of the screen.  Is it possible to get the files under the NAME column to point to the right song?  This is happening on my PC windows 7.

Move your mouse to the top of the Firefox window, then right click.
You will see a menu of the available toolbars. Select '''''Customize'''''.
In the new window, look for the icon. When you find if, hold down
the left button on it, and move it to where you want it to be.
You can move any of the icons you want from here, but some
    icons are locked in place.

  • "File Path" column in iTune?

How do I add a "File Path" column in iTunes, similiar to one on Windows Media Player (this is my biggest reason not to fuly switch to iTunes yet)?
Currently sorting by album is as close as I can get to sorting by file path.

Your view choices can be selected by a CMD-J (Apple Key + J) and tick the items you want to view in the iTunes main window.
Any time you want to see a song file - from the iTunes main window select a single tune and then CMD+R (Apple Key + R) or from the File Menu "Show in Finder" and a Finder window will open showing you the file on the HD. I find this very efficient and thus feel that a "file path" column wold be not helpful for my uses. If you have the Fiinder window set to "Columns" then you will see the path.
If you let iTunes do the work of organizing your tunes then it is always a simple to find any tune w/o iTunes being open as the tunes are always in the iTunes Music folder. With the Finder window open and set to column view drag the music folder to the finder window and create an alias for fast access.

Very many thanks to you, Putaro!  Your answer provided the solution. It was a buggy plug-in that turned out to be the culprit.
You're off the hook, Apple, and my apologies for stating that you let a dog run loose. You skated by this time, Apple. But I'm watching you.
But again, Putaro's reference to the plugins I had installed over the years turned out to illuminate the problem. I have several plugins in my iTunes plugins folder, pretty much all designed to add more visualizer functionality. I removed all of them, and ALL of the problems I noted in my post went away, with full iTunes functionality restored.
I began adding the plugins back to hopefully single out the culprit. Among the ones I had been using included fielder, G-Force, Timestrech, volcanokit, QuartzComposer, and Jax. I hadn't used any of them in a while - probably at least a verison or more back in iTunes updates, but iTunes continued to work with all of them installed. Currently, only QuartzComposer continues to work in iTunes 10.4. The rest no longer even show up as visualizer opitons, with one exception. Jax does show up, but does not work. AND THE PRESENCE OF JAX IS WHAT KILLED MY ITUNES.
I looked into it and went back to the developer, and it appears that they discontinued developing Jax some time ago - evidently, it was buggy and crash prone. I remember after buying it, having problems with it - having never worked to its touted potential, but I didn't pursue it, and never uninstalled it. Leaving it in there caused all iTunes functionality to cease with the iTunes 10.4 update.
If you've got Jax installed, consider removing it before updating to iTunes 10.4.
My iTunes is now working right as rain, thanks again to Putaro!

  • Is it possible to edit "Disc #" column in iTunes?

I did a search on this and did not find it, though I'd imagine someone's asked this before.
On some multi-CD box sets, not all the disc info appears in the "Disc #" column in iTunes 9. For example, one set I imported showed 1 of 8, 2 of 8, 3 of 8, 4 of 8, 6 of 8, 7 of 8 - with no values for the fifth and eighth discs. Is there a way to manually update this column with the missing "5 of 8" and "8 of 8"? This would help with the order of the songs on those discs...
    Thanks!

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Just select the tracks of the discs you want to edit using Shift-Click or Ctrl-Click to select multiple tracks. Then *Get Info.* with Ctrl-I. On the Info tab set the *Disc X of Y* values and click OK. For more on organising your albums, including mult-CD albums see http://www.samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp

  • Show filenames when viewing slideshows on AppleTV?

I want to show a slideshow of images on a television. The only catch is the filenames have to be displayed along with the image. Is this something AppleTV can do? I need the image and corresponding filename to appear on the screen at the same time.
If AppleTV doesn't do this (and I have it feeling it doesnt) what software, hardware or applications will do this?
My current not ideal solution is to run a slideshow in iPhone (which does show filenames) and connect my laptop to the TV. I can then use an Apple remote to scroll through the images. It's not the best set up, I'm looking for something which does the same thing but is more convinient.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Michael,
I bought the 60GB iPod last week together with a dock (for Color iPod) which has 3 outputs:
    - dock connector
    - audio mini-jack output
    - s-video output.
I connected the latter with an s-video cable to my TV's s-video bus and was able to present the slideshow on TV without a problem (imported from Adobe Photoshop Elements (3.0) using iTunes)
In order to be able to listen to music (either within a slideshow or just "normal" playback) I have connected the jack-output to my stereo equipment using a jack to RCA cable. Works like a breeze over here but I guess you definitely need a dock for this setup.
Hope this is of any help to you.

Many people like that feature of Windows Media Player, but it is not possible in iTunes.  As the King notes, you can see the location one file at a time.

  • Missing columns in iTunes through shared network

Hi - I currently have a Windows machine running iTunes that is sharing my library on my home network.  Using my Macbook's iTunes to play from that library, many columns are not displayable in iTunes, for instance date added, play count, last played and a list of others.  These used to be viewable and somehow they just disappeared.  Any ideas?
Also does anyone know if it's possible to set ratings on songs through a shared home network?

    Hello jjimmyp,
You should be able to see the other columns in iTunes, just click View > Show View Options or Command + J. From there you should be able to check off what views to add and remove.

  • Symbols in 1st Column of Itunes

What do the different symbols mean in the first column of Itunes, next to the song number?

    Hello, Chris.
    From iTunes Help (6.0.1)
A display icon next to an item means the item is a video. Double-click the video to play it.
A book icon next to an item means the item is a PDF file. Double-click the file to open it in your default PDF viewer.
A moving zigzag next to a song means a song is being imported from a CD or your hard disk. A green checkmark means iTunes has finished importing the song.
An exclamation point next to a song means the song file can't be located. It may have been moved or deleted.
A broadcast icon next to a song means the song is stored on the Internet and is "streamed" to you when you click to play it.
A black checkmark next to a song means the song will be included in your next action. For example, only songs with black checkmarks are copied to your iPod or imported when you click the Import button. Or, when you're playing all the songs in a list, only the checked songs play.
A speaker next to a song means the song is currently playing. When importing a song you're also listening to, you see a moving zigzag instead of the speaker.
Chasing arrows next to a song mean the song is being copied or downloaded from the Internet.
If you see an arrow to the right of a playlist in your Source list, you can click it to publish your playlist on the iTunes Music Store.
If you see an arrow to the right of a song, album, or artist in your library or a playlist, you can click it to go to the page for that item on the iTunes Music Store. You can show or hide these arrows by selecting or deselecting the "Show links to Music Store" checkbox in the General pane of iTunes Preferences.
If you see an arrow to the right of a podcast, you can click it to go to the page for that podcast in the iTunes Music Store.
If you see an exclamation point to the right of a Smart Playlist, one of the conditions for this Smart Playlist is a playlist that is not available. Click the exclamation point to choose another playlist or remove the playlist that is no longer available.
An eject icon appears to the right of CDs or digital music players in the Source list. Click the eject icon to eject the CD or to remove the music player from the Source list.
A bullet next to a song in your iPod shuffle playlist indicates the song is not currently on your iPod shuffle. If the song is authorized to play on your computer and is saved in a format that can be played on your iPod shuffle (such as AAC, MP3, or WAV), the song will be copied to your iPod shuffle the next time you connect it (if there is enough space on your iPod shuffle). For more information, see the documentation that came with your iPod shuffle.
A blue dot next to a podcast episode means you haven't started listening to the episode. A blue dot next to a podcast means there is at least one episode of that podcast you haven't started listening to yet.

  • "Devices" does not appear in left-hand column of iTunes

"Devices" has disappeared from the left hand column of iTunes.
    How can I restore?

You've got windows, i suppose? Well, how long do you wait before the device appears? i think i had to wait like 20 minutes b4 mine would show up the first time. Or, you could try reinstalling iTunes. Or, if all else fails, use another computer, like ask a friend if you could use theirs if you dont have another.
Hope it works, and always happy to help,

  • Enable artist overview, cover flow on ipod AND artist column in iTunes...

    Greetingz
    Here's the problem:
I want to enable the artist column in iTunes for all my music.
I can already do this with genres and albums, and its so convenient.
However the artist column is showing only "collections" instead of -+for example Abba, Aerosmith, ACDC, ..+-
This is because I have put everything on Complication "Yes"
and on my ipod classic complication in the music menu is 'clicked' off. Why? so the ipod doesn't show all covers separately in the cover flow. its all good on the ipod; I can also get a list of all artists and genres. But in iTunes the artist column only gives one category and thats "complications" not like abba aerosmith acdc you name it. How can I get this right for both the ipod (remember also the cover flow as well as the artists must work correctly) AND iTunes? I find this very complicated and one of the only things I am unable to figer out.
Many many thanks to all who help!

"Compilation" means that the album is one of those Time-Life type "Disco Hits" or "50's Greats" CDs that aren't by one artist. I would suggest either turning off compilations for everything or going through each song and filling in the "Album Artist" field.
