Show Folders before Files in FInder window?

One thing I miss from Windows Explorer is that folders precede files in the tree structure. Is there any way to customize Finder to show my structure the same way?
Powerbook G4 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks for the help...except...
I only see that option when no other Finder windows are open - when I select the View|Show Options they pertain to the Desktop only. When I select View|Show Options from an open Finder window the options are only Text Size, Show icons, and Show preview column. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. Can you tell?

  • Sorting folders before files in Finder

    Hi there!
Is it possible to have Finder to show all of my folders before the files?
I find it a little confusing to have folders and files mixed together but can't find any option to change the way they are arranged...
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks and Ciao!
    Sergio

    Try this:
In Finder goto View ang then to Show View Options. In there goto Keep Arranged By and in the dropdown under that, select Kind.
    Does that work for you?
Oops! forgot....at the top of the View Option window, you can check if it's for This Window or All Windows (I assume you want it for all)

  • Show folders before files view?

I just bought a Macbook Pro which is my first Apple computer since the IIgs. I am a PC technician by trade but I am a total newbie with Macs.
When using Windows, when I open a folder, all folders are listed first and then the files in the 'root' of the main folder are listed. When using OS X, everything is in alphabetical order. Files and folders are mixed together. Is there any way to make all folders be listed first and then files?
    Thanks for any help.

If you click on the "view" menu and go to "arrange by" choose kind. That will make all related files bunch together.

  • The files in finder windows all have the same icon

Hi, the files in finder windows all have the same icons. Sometimes the icon will change when I drop a new file in a window. But I have no control over that. Any cue?
    Thanks

I also rebuilt the Launch Services Database. It worked for the icons already in folders (and finder windows), but when I put a file from the desktop in one of these folders, the file does not have the correct icon.

  • Remote server view not showing folders or files

My customer uses Dw CS3 with XP SP3. Everything worked fine until their ISP changed their web server. After the change remote site view does not show folders or files although uploading to server works fine with Dw. If I try with Filezilla or any other FTP client everything works normaly. I'm no Dw expert just a sys.admin, but I don't know what settings I should try anymore. I tested this with dw cs 4 also and same problem there.
If I check the FTP LOG from dw it shows the file listing correctly and that I have rights to the folders and files.

Do you know what changed on the FTP server? I would love to know what it is. And if you have been able to solve the issue, then we might be able to provide the steps to reproduce/prevent the problem to Adobe's bug report form.
I have had rather iffy experience with DW's FTP feature with various hosts through the years. Enough so that I only try out DW's FTP when I upgrade, and always resort to using a different FTP client. Although I tend to prefer FTP client software anyway, there are times when it would be convenient to use DW's features.

  • Why am I having folders disappear in my Finder windows?

I just created some new folders in my Finder window and when I did, many preexisting folders disappeared!  I lost a lot of information and want to know if there is a way to get them back!

Have you tried to search for the folders with Spotlight? If Spotlight doesn't turn up any results try looking for them with EasyFind. It doesn't depend on Spotlight's indexing to find files/folders.
If EasyFind doesn't show your folders use Disk Utility to verify your disk. Also check free disk space to make sure you have a minimum of 20% free space.  If Disk Utility's Verify finds errors it is very important to back up before attempting to repair your startup drive. Don't use the disk for anything else until you are backed up because that might overwrite your data that you can't find.
Then boot from Lion's recovery partition by holding down Command-R immediately after you hear the startup chime. Don't release the keys until you see the Apple logo and spinning gear. Alternatively, you can hold down the option key in a similar fashion and select the recovery partition. Select Disk Utility and use the First Aid tab to repair your startup disk. It may take more than one pass to repair so repeat the repair process until Disk Utility says the disk is OK. Boot normally and see if you can now find  your files.

  • Can I group list view by folders then files (like in Windows)

I'm brand new to Mac (was a Windows user since 1993) and so now I'm starting over as a NOOB!
One thing that's driving me crazy is that I am used to viewing my list of files and folders with the folders grouped together alphabetically (or chronologically) and then the files grouped together alpha or chrono.
Can this be done in Mac; if so, how? I've been searching for an answer and have not found it.
    Thanks!

    welcome to Discussions!
you can sort files by type by opening a finder window and clicking View>Show View Options, clicking show "Kind", and clicking on it's icon in the right of the finder window. Items will be sorted alphabetically by kind, and within each kind alphabetically by name.
    Good luck!

  • Upload menu showing folders not files?

When I try to upload a file in either Safari or Firefox, the upload menu shows only folders, not files. The folders are not clickable, so I am unable to upload anything.
    Ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot insafe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Show result before I click "Find" button~

    HI ALL~
    I have a problem~
    ex: A-Group has "Find Page=true"......
when I navigate FindA-Group.jsp , there has result in the page before I press "FIND" button.(I combine fine page and result page to same page).Of course,I can input some data in query columns, and to find.
    Could it to accomplish??
    How to do it??
    my JheadStart vision:9.0.5.1.8
    Using JSP.

    Spray,
I don't exactly understand your problem. I assume that you have applied the section from the JHeadstart tutorial called "Find page and result table in same page".
I assume that the current behavior is that initially (when you first enter the page) you do not see the result table, and that you would like to change that so that it initially shows all rows?
If that is the case, you could try re-ordering the Struts actions that are performed: first perform a find before you go to the page.
    Hope this helps,

    Hi,
Based on my research, the issue is a bug in Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2. It needs some time to figure out the proper fixes, so please wait for a future patch. If there is a solution or workaround, I will post it in this thread.
Thank you for your understanding and support.

  • Sorting files in Finder Window A-Z instead of Z-A

My issue arises when I access Finder through an app (for example, when I'm adding a file to my iTunes library). The files in the Finder window are being sorted Z-A instead of A-Z. I think I might have accidentally hit a shortcut to sort Z-A, and I can't figure out how to toggle it back. It's a small thing, but it's driving me crazy. I've tried switching between all the different viewing options, and that doesn't work. Anyone know what to do here?

    Good Morning V.A.L.I.S.
Thanks for the question.  I'll include some information about the Finder application below.  What I usually do is select a folder like Documents or Music and change the view to List view.  At the top of each column is a grey "header."  The first one you should see is Name.  Click on Name and your files will be sorted in order by the file name.  A ^ symbol beside the column heading indicates the files are in ascending ( A - Z ) order.  Click on the word Name again, and the sorting will toggle to descending order (Z - A).  Does that make sense?

    List View
Choose View > as List to see the items in a consecutive order. You can change the sort order of the list by clicking the headers (Name, Documents, Kind, Date) at the top of the list view. Click the same header a second time to switch between ascending and descending order.
If an item is within a folder, you can click the triangle next to the folder name to see any items stored within that folder.
    Have a great day!

  • Why can't I drag and drop folders and files in finder?

I was sorting out my folders and files when all of a sudden it stopped letting me drag and drop.
I didn't go on 'Show View Options'.
I've also checked my trackpad settings and all is as should be.
    Any idea what's up?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

all of a sudden it stopped letting me drag and drop.
What do you mean by this?  What symptoms are being displayed?  Are you getting an error message when you try to drag and drop?  We need more information to help you diagnose the problem.

  • Sorting folders and files in FINDER

I can sort folders and files alphabetically, chronologically, etc using LIST view, but not in any other view.
I seem to recall that FINDER used to sort alphabetically but now seems to sort randomly. I prefer to use the COLUMNS view.
In LIST view there are column headers NAME, DATE MODIFIED, SIZE, KIND and clicking on one will sort accordingly.
But these headers do not appear in the other views.

    Hi,
This can be done. If you want to arrange your files etc as columns...select "As Columns" from the "View" menu & then select "View Options" also from the "View" menu. It will then give you options as to how you wish to arrange your files etc.
