Show/Hide conditional text at a book level

I am using TCS2 on Windows XP.
FM 9.0 p250
I have several files as part of a large FM book. Each file has the same text conditional tags. Can I, at a book level, set my conditions to show/hide, etc. and then update the book? So far, I only know how to open each file, set the SHOW/HIDE CONDITIONAL TEXT as I need it (not to show conditiona indicators and according to my built expression) and then save and close each file.
Is there a way to do all my files at once? Note- I want them all set the same way... so that might make it easier..
Thanks,
Adriana

I don't have FrameMaker available right now, so I'm working from memory, using the traditional FrameMaker menus, rather than the FM 9 tools.
Select all the files in the book window. With the book window active, open the View menu and look for Conditional Text. Your settings here apply to all selected files in the book window, so it's possible to set conditions on all or some files files. Ctrl+Click to select non-contiguous files; Shift+Click to select a range of contiguous files.

  • Is there a quick way to show/hide conditional text to create a book?

    I have a set of files that represent chapters. These will be used in two books. Is there a way to show/hide conditional text from the book file rather than going into each chapter and setting show/hide for the book I want to create?

    WIth the book file open and selected, select all the files in the book (Ctrl+A), and apply your condition settings. Update the book.

  • FM9: Show conditional text for entire book -- how?

    In FM8, I would select all the docs in my book, then choose Special>Conditional Text>Show/Hide Conditional Text to display the conditional text dialog. Choose my display options (specific conditions, or Show All), then apply. Voila!
    In FM9, I can't seem to figure out how to do it. If I follow the same steps, when the dialog appears, all of the options are 'greyed out'.
    Help?

    Hmmm.... nope :-)
    Okay, I opened up my book (contains 17 documents, at least 12 of them have conditional text). I have two of the documents displayed so that I can see what's going on.
    To 'show all' conditional text for a specific document:
    - Click in the document to give it focus.
    - Click Show/Hide Conditional Text to display the pod.
    - Select Show All and click Apply.
    - Success, for that document.
    To 'show all' conditional text for the entire book:
    - Click in the book pod to give it focus.
    - Ctrl+A to select all the documents (all docs are now highlighted)
    - View > Show/Hide Conditional Text... to display the pod.
    - All options are grayed out, and no conditions appear in the Show or Hide lists.
    Am I missing a step somewhere (or more likely, am I doing this totally incorrectly)?
    Thanks!

  • FM12: Show/Hide condition does not apply to entire book

    FM12: From the Show/Hide Conditional Text pod, Show as per Condition applied to entire book does not consistently update book with correct condition. Now to get the desired condition, I have to apply the condition per section in the book. Has the workflow for this feature changed with FM12? Or is it a bug? Thanks, Patti

    > ... I have to apply the condition per section in the book.
    No, you don't. You can apply it to all component files in one operation. In the Book menu, select all component files.
    View > Show/Hide Conditional Text
    {edit}
    [ Set ]
    As Arnis pointed out, you do need to Update the book for complete re-application of Conditions.
    Edit > Update Book
    {select all possibly excluding Apply Master Page}
    In particular, any Cross-References to conditionalized text will still be as they were until xrefs are updated.
    We exclude AMP from Update because it is unstable in FM7, and run it as a separate operation, and re-Update book after that because pagination may have changed.

  • Frame 8 crashes when showing all conditional text

    When I try to Show ALL conditions in my Frame 8 file, Frame crashes. I just recently installed CS4 on my system, but other than that, nothing has changed. I have had no problems with conditional text and this file before. Wondering if anyone has had this issue and knows a workaround or fix. Thanks, sandra

    Good, then you're all patched up, that's great.
    I don't use conditional text at all, but several folks around here do and will be along to offer some help.
    Can you identify whether this crash is a result of adding a new condition recently? Had showing all conditions had previously worked?

  • How can I have a button that will show/hide a text box and images on the same page?

    I have a page like below:
    I want to make so that those 3 buttons show different text under them when they are each pressed. How can I achieve this?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    Please try using Tooltip Composition Widget to achieve that..
    You need to customize  the trigger as the button  and you can use the target to insert desired text box or images.
    you can find this in Widgets library panel > composition
    Please let me know in case you need any other clarification on that.

  • More/Less link to show & hide more text in a report

    Hi Everyone,
    Lot of my reports having description field running around close to 100 to 200 characters.
    So instead of showing all the description to the users why not show only partial data like first 100 characters and then followed with a "More..." link to show the rest and change the link to "...Les".
    On clicking Less it should display only 100 characters.
    Can some one please throw some light on how to embed this in a report column.

  • Selecting conditional text in book crashes FM 9

    You never know when it will occur or on which files .... I am in a book file and select several files, select View > Show/Hide Conditional Text, and change my condition settings, then click Apply.
    Framemaker crashes. Sometimes three, four times in a row.
    Yes I've made new files, etc., etc., and some others in our group have the same problems with conditional text in some books. This is not consistent behavior so that's why we scratch our heads.
    I have 4GB of memory and an empty hard drive, so that's not the issue. We work off a network but the same thing can happen if I save a book locally.
    What on Earth could be happening?

    Some files are new. Some files were ported from previous versions. Because the crashes are always different, it isn't always the same files or books where crashes occur. One never knows what will trigger the crash or when, as I mentioned. I've rebuilt files and had them crash, but someone else can use them (and change the same setting) without problems.
    There's no discernible pattern.
    Crashes for team members occur consistently at the book level. I seem to be the only person who can set conditions at the book level (though not consistently, as you can see). Crashes can occur for me at the book level or when I have a file open. Typically a file that crashes at book level also crashes with the file open.
    I am trying to change one condition for these companion volumes (a set of three books that share some files). I successfully changed the condition a couple of hours ago.
    Our network isn't backed up until very early in the morning and it's afternoon here -- that's not the issue. Nobody else is working on this project so that's not the issue.
    Our templates have all of our conditions already defined so theoretically there shouldn't be conflicts. As I recall, a conflict triggers a notification when you update a book, and I successfully updated the companion book and printed to PDF a couple of hours ago.
    Content doesn't seem to matter. The files in question consist of headings and tables. There are no graphics or linked files. The most sophisticated thing in them is cross-references (some conditional).
    I just successfully changed the condition on all of the files in that chapter except one. The file that crashes Frame is very simple (no graphics or linked files, just cross-references) and it is one of the files that successfully switched conditions just a few hours ago.

  • Book and File Conditional Text Tags Don't Match

    In Framemaker 10 (TCS 3, Windows 7 64-bit), when I click on a document in a the book (& View>Show/Hide Conditional Text), an extra conditional text tag shows up that doesn't exist in the document Show/Hide Conditional Text.
    For example:
    In the book, My Book.book, I select Chapter1.fm (but don't open it).
    Then I open the Show/Hide Conditional Text panel (View>Show/Hide Conditional Text)
    I see these two condition tags, Hide Text and HideText. I use Hide Text but not HideText.Apparently, at some point I changed the name of the condition tag.
    Then I open Chapter1.fm.
    When I open the Show/Hide Conditional Text panel, HideText isn't there.
    What I want to do is to delete HideText (the one I don't use), but I can't find ourt how to do it. any ideas out there?
    One more bit of information that might help figure out what's going on:
    I select Chapter1.fm in the book.
    Then I select Show as per condition in the Show/hide Conditional Text panel.
    Select HideText in the Hide field.
    Click the left arrow (<--) to move HideText to the Show field.
    Click Apply.
    I get this error message in the Book Error Log:
    Cannot show the following tags because they do not exist in this document
    So, can anyone tell me how to get rid of HideText from the book files?
    Thanks!
    John N.

    John, some troubleshooting questions:
    1. did all of the file(s) originate from FM10 or were any from previous versions? Did you import previous version content? Slight naming differences between FM versions is an insidious problem that many of us here can relate to ... If any of the files were from previous versions, I would start with testing FM10 original content itself, to see what naming convention FM10 starts with.
    2. if you want to dive into the innards of your problem files, you might use the venerable MIFBrowser, a freebie from
    http://www.wideman-one.com/gw/tech/framemaker/mifbrowse.htm
    Although it hasn't been updated in a loooooong time, it should still work perfectly with FM10 MIF files.  It's just a viewer, not an editor, but it will help you get a handle on both the conditional tags in-situ, in comparison to the tag as defined in the condition catalog section.
    MIF is a bit daunting if you've never looked at it, but with MIFBrowse the various sections of content are more easily viewable.
    3. With copies of your FM files safely backed up you could then edit the conditions in the.MIF files in a text editor (or by using FM itself, although this takes some special care to ensure that the file remains as text. I personally fine text editors (e.g. NotepadPlus or EmEditor) easier to use because viewing line numbers helps when trying to sync between what you see in the MIFBrowse display vs. actually edit the content.
    4. It's also possible to save the .book file as .mif to then examine/edit the conditional tag catalog with a text editor. You could copy the "missing" conditional definition from one of the chapters into the .book file.

  • How to build a document with conditional text

    So, I created a condition for a feature that is new to my document and until it's stable, I want to hide that text. No problem. I selected the condition and from the Show/Hide Conditional Text pod, I moved it over to hide. When I created the conditional text, I gave it a background color of gray so I could easily distinguish the conditional text from the non-conditional text. However, if I leave the conditional text visible and go to generate a PDF, the gray background style appears on the conditional text in the PDF. Is there something I'm missing here when it comes to building a PDF? I don't want the style I see in the FM file to appear in the final PDF. I only want that background color as an indicator while I'm editing it. I don't want to have to remember to change the style every time I want to build with the condition visible. Here's a screenshot from the PDF. The bits in gray are what I had applied the condition to.
    After selecting the book file, I tried both doing a Save as PDF and a Print Book but both options ended up with my conditional text having the gray background style in the final output.

    No, you have misunderstood the problem. Yes, If I want to hide the condition so it doesn't print, that works great. But, once the feature is active (or say I have two customers, one that has the feature and one that doesn't), If I want to print the document with the conditional text visible, then I want the text but I don't want the background style that shows up in FM. The conditional style should only appear in FM, not the generated PDF.
    I worked for years with Madcap's Flare and you could set the color of the conditional text in order to distinguish what text was conditioned and with what condition (different colors for different conditions). However, when you generated the output, those colors never showed up. The only thing that displayed was the text that was set to be visible. That's what I was expecting from FM. And the FM tutorials I have taken, that's what they stated should happen. Here's a transcript from the FrameMaker 10 tutorial on Lynda.com:
    When we go down to the Conditional Text pod, you'll notice that we have a number of radio buttons for In, Not In, As Is, and then we also have our tags down below. So this is going to be in the US version. So we'll click the US tag. We'll change the radio button to In. You'll see the status change over here to In, and then we'll apply that by clicking the first button in our group of buttons here to apply it. Now, you'll see something change here in the document and if we deselect our text, you can see it's now blue with the overline and that's how we decided the style and color would appear for our US tags. That's not how it's going to print. It's just for our own visual purposes.

  • Can I export just the "show" conditional text to a mif?

    When I export a document with conditional text to a pdf, just the conditional text that is set to "show" (and the unconditional text) appears in the pdf.  That's good, but I want the same thing when exporting a mif.  There are two reasons for this:
    (1)  We have an in-house tool that parses a mif and extracts data from certain tables to populate a database.  The tool doesn't parse pdfs.  And the tool won't always handle conditional text correctly, particularly conditional text table rows.  The tool would work fine if the conditional text were already "resolved" during the export to mif.
    (2)  I'd like to use the Boolean logic for conditional text that is available in FM9, but I need to furnish files to other groups in the company that use FM7.  Their FM7 wouldn't display conditional text properly if it depended on anything other than OR logic.  But they would be happy to accept mif files that didn't have any conditional text because it had been "resolved" when I generated a mif7 file for them.
    I've tried various ways to convert a pdf into a mif file, but no process seems to preserve the formatting and the editable text. I'd be willing to accomplish this in some round-about fashion involving Framemaker, Acrobat Pro and/or some other tool.
    But the happiest outcome for me would be to discover that FM9 already has the ability to export just the "show" conditional text and the unconditional text to a mif.
    Or can this be done by making a copy of the document and then somehow automating the deletion of the "hide" conditional text and the conversion of the "show" conditional text to unconditional?

    Or can this be done by making a copy of the document and then somehow automating the deletion of the "hide" conditional text and the conversion of the "show" conditional text to unconditional?
    Writing a custom script to filter the MIF to parse out the conditions is non-trivial. You can try a Google search for an existing filter or script that does the job. However, if there is no such thing, then you're on the right track, getting FM to do the hard part - filtering the conditionalized content correctly. For example:
    * In a copy of the original file, delete the condition(s) you want to hide; during the deletion, you have the option to delete the corresponding text. Then save as MIF to a descriptive name, or save as .fm to a new name, then open and save that file as MIF. Close the source file without saving.
    * Reopen the source file and do the same process from this fresh instance, deleting the condition(s) you want to show. Save as above.
    * Within FM itself, however, there's no way to automate this process. With one of the free FM utilities - dobatch from cudspan, or dzbatcher from datazone - you can script opening and saving an FM file as MIF. Search Google for dobatch, cudspan, dzbatcher, or datazone.
    * To automate setting the conditions, a keystroke-macro recorder might serve, otherwise you'd need the commercial FrameScript product, and a customized script if there's no existing script for this purpose. For FrameScript info, check with Rick Quattro at frameexpert.com.
    * If you're using Structured FrameMaker and have the expertise available to customize an EDD, you could take advantage of the "filter by attribute" feature, but it's not trivial to adopt Structured FM just for this narrowly-focused need.

  • Captivate: Using Javascript to show/hide text captions

    Hello,
    I want to show/hide a text caption using javascript. I can't find the way of doing it with advanced actions. I dont know if it's because it belongs to a question slide in a pool. Does somebody knows if it's possible and how it can be done??

    You can set the length of the variable when you insert it.
    15 characters is just the default setting.
    What I meant by COULD is that the kind of thing you are asking about here (using JavaScript to hide objects inside a Captivate movie at runtime) is not as simple as you'd like it to be.
    JavaScript is not my particular area of expertise, but there are some people that chime in on this forum that ARE experts at JS. But I think they would also be the first to say that it's not as simple a thing to pull off as just "knowing the command to hide/show an object".
    The easiest tool to use in Captivate for showing or hiding objects is Advanced Actions.  The next easiest thing to use is ActionScript 3, and that's hard.  JavaScript is a very useful programming language, but it spends all of its life outside the Captivate movie looking in through AS3's External Interface.  So JS alone is not going to solve all your issues.

  • Acrobat Forms - javascript to hide/unhide text box if any one of a number of radio buttons is enable

    I have a form which I am designing in Acrobat 9 which has a section where there are three questions, each with a pair of radio buttons - one for 'yes' and one for 'no'. They are in the style of a check box (with a tick). I need some help to write some code which will unhide a single field (or multiple fields if I need to use something similar at a later date) if any one of the 'yes' radio buttons is checked. So if all three radio buttons were checked, the field would be hidden but if you then changed your mind and clicked a yes button, the field would be visible.
    I am new to this so any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance! I hope that i have explained this clearly btw.

    For ease of maintenance you might want to make the above script into 2 doucment level JavaScript function. One could set a return value to the result of the caparison and the other could show/hide the text field based on the result. Then a call to the show/hide function could control the show and display of the field(s) and and a call to the function for the results of the comparison could be used anywhere else and not change the field display property.
    funciton Test3RB() {
    // set logical result based on result of test
    var bReslut = ((this.getField("rb1").value == "Y")|(this.getField("rb2").value == "Y") |(this.getField("rb3").value == "Y"));
    return bResult; // return value of logical test
    } // end funciton
    function ShowText() {
    // assume field not to be shown
    this.getField("textbox").display=display.hidden;
    if (Test3RB() ) {
    this.getField("textbox").display=display.visible;
    } // end if true
    return;
    } // end ShowText function
    You mouse up action for each button could be:
    ShowText();
    And if you could test the logical value returned by the function somewhere else and did not want to modify the display field:
    if(Test3RB() ){
    // action for true
    } else {
    // action for false

  • Show/Hide a column in a Table region

    I have search page which queries the data and displays the records in a table region. We need to have an option to show or hide a non-database column at the end of the each row in the table. If the checkbox is selected, the last column should appear and if checkbox is deselected it should get disappeared.
    I have used a transient attribute in the VO and using that transient attribute trying to show the text field when the checkbox is selected. For ex, if the search returns 6 rows - if you select the checkbox of the first row , the last column "CTS" gets displayed without any issues but if you select the other rows (without checking the first row), the CTS column is not displayed.
    The column is getting displayed only IF you select the checkbox of the first row and try it other rows. If you try to select the checkbox of other rows without selecting the 1st row, it doesnt show the CTS column.

    rowi.setAttribute("CTSEngineer_TR",Boolean.TRUE); // transient attr

    I just referred to the Dev Guide and understand that we can use the identifier of the PPR event source row (Page 262) but still the issue persists.
    String rowReference = pageContext.getParameter(OAWebBeanConstants.EVENT_SOURCE_ROW_REFERENCE);
    I have a rawtext as the first column( its just a dummy column since the PPR event is not getting fired if the checkbox is the 1st control/column) and the 2nd column is the check box which has a PPR event. The PPR event fires whenever the check box is selected or deselected but surprising the text field gets editable only if the 1st row is clicked.
    Changed code is as always - not sure why the table shows/hides the text column only if the 1st column is selected. Will appreciate any help.

  • FM9 crash during show/hide of conditional text

    I'm having a vexing problem with two of my chapters: whenever I attempt to show/hide the conditions, FM9 crashes with "Internal Error 9004, 6921852, 9677150, 0. Framemaker has detected a serious problem and must quit".
    A few things I've tried (as culled from posts on here):
    Updating to FrameMaker p250 from p237
    Saving as .mif, then opening and saving as .fm
    Changing the conditions on all chapters with the book open
    It's somewhat unpredictable. Saving as a .mif, then opening and saving as .fm worked once, but after performing an edit to the doc, it crashed again when toggling the conditions. Similarly, changing the conditions to all chapters with the book open seemed to avoid a crash, but trying it again crashed when it reached the problem chapter.
    It's definietly something in the file, as my co-worker will occasionally get the crashes with the the same chapters when showing/hiding conditions, but not always.
    Other details:
    My XP installation is up to date with all the Microsoft updates
    I'm using FM9 (unstructured)
    The docs in question are not "fresh" per se, but have been upgraded from FM8 to FM9
    Also:
    Our documents have conditions A, B, C, and D.
    In previous versions of Frame, we had been using the shuttle box interface for showing/hiding conditions: show A and B, hide C and D.
    Starting with FM8, we started using equivalent logical expressions: NOT "C" AND NOT "D".
    The crashing appears *not* to occur if I use the shuttle box interface. However, I'm told that we have use the logical expressions for some reason.
    Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks!

    SOLVED
    Here's my fix for Internal Error: 9004, 6921852, 9677150, 0 when saving as PDF, printing PDF, or printing to PS from FrameMaker 9 using Acrobat 9. YMMV.
    I could not reproduce this  Internal Error: 9004, 6921852, 9677150,0 when using conditions, so I do not know if this solution fixes the condition-provoked instance of  Internal Error: 9004, 6921852, 9677150, 0.
    Anyway, I uninstalled FM, rebooted, searched for leftover files, deleted them, rebooted, uninstalled Acrobat Pro Extended 9, searched for leftover files and registry entries, deleted them (probably missed a few), rebooted, removed the Xerox Phaser PS printer driver for my local printer (because it was PostScript, figured I should), rebooted, installed the Xerox Phaser PS driver, rebooted, installed FrameMaker, rebooted, installed Acrobat Pro Extended 9, rebooted, installed each patch for FrameMaker and Acrobat Pro Extended 9, rebooted, installed the MS Hotfix discussed here (http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2008/07/hotfix_for_framemaker_1.html), and rebooted.
    All is now well for making PDFs.
