Show interface status (IOS layer 2switch)

Is it possible to modify the width of the column containing the description of the interfaces when I issue the "show interface status?" on IOS cisco switches?

I don't believe so but you can type show interface description if you want to see the entire description that is associated to the port.

  • Cisco SFP GLC-LH-SM unknown in show interface status

    Hi all,
Client installed a single mode fibre run from Distribution Switch to Access switch. The distance is not even greater than 100 Metres but the client insisted since the fibre is free.
On the Cisco Catalyst 2960X-24TS-L (Access layer not stacked) the SFP is identified, but on the Cisco Catalyst 2960X-24TS-L (Distribution switch stacked) the SFP module is "unknown".

    Distribution switch is running 150-2.EX4
    Access switch is running 150-2.EX5
I have configured on both sides speed nonegotiate, above output is showing that the 2 are not even talking to each other since their status is still auto auto...
Any ideas is gladly appreciated in terms of what show commands or diagnostic tests I can do for the interface just to test it?
I have tried to test it but it is saying diagnostic monitoring is not running, how can I run that feature as well?  Is that network impacting if I did?
    Kind regards,

    Hi,
Is there a link light on either side of the connection?
Is the SFP on the distro switch also LX?
If there is no link light, try crossing the strands on one side of the connection and test again.

  • Gigabit interface status faulty please help

When I do a show interface status on 4500 switch I got a status faulty
I did never see such thing
    Port- Name-Status-Vlan-Duplex-Speed Type
    Gi2/7-jsh3 faulty 188 full XXBaseSX
    Could you please help?
    Thanks a lot

this usually indicates the port is faulty (bad; not working; will not work)
this may have been set via the POST of the device. the internal tests failed and the port was marked FAULTY.
this could also be the result of a good port simply went bad for some unknown reason.
try to disable/reEnable the port. will probably still say faulty. (cannot initialize a faulty port)
try to reset the blade the port is on, or the supervisor if it resides on that.
do a "show test" (catOS) to see what the POST found when it did its powerOnSelfTests.
i've seen plenty of FAULTY ports and 99% of the time, the port is simply bad and must be replaced. (usually an ASIC or the likes)

Its hard to find expert on switches/IOS on the Network Management Forum, which is for NMS applications.
You should post this thread on Switching community of CSC forum.
Though, what i can suggest is to use SNTP.  Certain low-end Cisco devices only support SNTP. SNTP is a simplified, client-only version of NTP. SNTP can only receive the time from NTP servers and cannot be used to provide time services to other systems. SNTP typically provides time within 100 milliseconds of the accurate time. In addition, SNTP does not authenticate traffic, although you can configure extended access lists to provide some protection. An SNTP client is more vulnerable to misbehaving servers than an NTP client and should only be used in situations where strong authentication is not required.
SNTP may not be much of an alternative because it is not widely supported in software.
You can use command # sntp server. SNTP generally is supported on those platforms that do not provide support for NTP.
    Device (config)# sntp server {address | hostname} [version number]
For more clarification post this to Lan Switching and Routing section.

  • Regarding show vtp status

    Hi All,
    I'm learning networking.
I've a doubt from the output of show vtp status. What does it mean by "Maximum VLANs supported locally" ?
And the output is showing that the present verions is "VTP Version 2" and again at VTP V2 mode it is showing as disabled, why?
And I'm i not running the vtp version2 ? If yes, which version is this?
Can someone tell me what is "VTP Traps generaiton" ?
    Regards,
    Chandu

    Hi Chandu,
let me start with some brief answers, we can dig deeper then if you like.
What does it mean by "Maximum VLANs supported locally" ?
The number depend on the platform.
Example: Catalyst 2960 Data Sheet: Max. 255 VLANs
Much more important: Low-end platforms are limited in the number of spanning-tree instances they support.
Example: Catalyst 2960: Max. 128 instances
And the output is showing that the present verions is "VTP Version 2" and again at VTP V2 mode it is showing as disabled, why?
It means the switch/IOS is v2-capable (but running v1).
This output- line in your IOS is somewhat misleading, other IOS provide a much better output:
    VTP Version                     : running VTP1 (VTP2 capable)
Can someone tell me what is "VTP Traps generaiton" ?
You can enable SNMP traps for VTP events (SNMP traps are sent to a management station):
    Sw1(config)#do show vtp status | i Traps
    VTP Traps Generation            : Disabled
    Sw1(config)#snmp-server enable traps vtp
    Sw1(config)#do show vtp status | i Traps
    VTP Traps Generation            : Enabled
And also at the end what does it mean "MD5 digest" i believe it is reffering to VTP password, but i didn't set any password for this switch yet.. but on the right side of that it is showing some hexadecimal values what are they?
Have a look at this discussion:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/4105410#4105410
Configuration last modified by 0.0.0.0 at 3-26-93 14:35:34  --> What does this exactly mean?Local updater ID is 0.0.0.0 (no valid interface found) --> what is local updater ID, i thought it wil be an IP address, but again it is showing like no interface found?
The switch hasn't received "better" VTP information from another switch so far and uses its own information (local vlan.dat).
0.0.0.0: It seems like it doesn't have an IP address configured and up/up.

  • In Message Monitoring Message showing holding status

    Hi
Can anyone solve this problem. Its urgent for me.
    My scenario is IDoc->XI->FILE
The file i am trying to generate is an xml file which i am dropping in XI application server using File system.
The problem is when i am going to see the message using transaction SXMB_MONI the perticular message interface is showing waiting for acknowladgement status .
But in message monitoring in runtime workbench the it is showing following status:
    Adapter Engine
    <b>Holding</b>

    CORP_SAP_DR2_030 http://limited.com/usa/sap_appl/retail/VendorsSAPAPOToMANU
    MIIA_Create
    BS_MANU
    I am in SP14.
Also the output xml file is not getting created in the XI application server.
Please let me know the solution.
    Thanks
    Debraj Roy

    Hi Debraj
HOLDING is a status which occurs normally for EOIO (Exactly Once In Order), so your message is set to Holding means some earlier message has not gone through. So until those messages are through this message will be in HOLDING state.
Have a look at this link which explains how to handle such scenarios.

  • How to do "default interface" on IOS XR?

    Hi Guys,
Does anybody know an equivalent of “default interface” for IOS XR or a smart way to delete hundreds of attachment circuits for single physical interface?
    Appreciate your comments.
    Regards,
    Vasil

    Hello Vasil,
Use "no" with * to remove them.
For example we have gigabitEthernet 0/1/0/6 and we like to remove all the sub interfaces. Use "no gigabitEthernet 0/1/0/6.*"
To make the main config to default, use "no gigabitEthernet 0/1/0/6"
Before coming, you can use "show" to see what going to be removed:
    RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:mercy(config)#no interface gigabitEthernet 0/1/0/6.*
    RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:mercy(config)#show
    Wed Oct 10 16:01:14.212 CEST
    Building configuration...
    !! IOS XR Configuration 4.2.1
    no interface GigabitEthernet0/1/0/6.2
    no interface GigabitEthernet0/1/0/6.3
    end
    RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:mercy(config)#

  • Interface status when connected to an ADM?

I have a couple of quick questions, maybe someone can help me with them.
    These are the facts:
    - I have a fiber optic running about 20km between two sites.
    - On one end I have an ASR1006 with a SIP-10G and in one of its sub-slots it has a SPA-5x1GE. This SPA has a 1000BASE-ZX SFP installed.
    - There's a smf jumper running from the SFP to the ODF an this ODF goes to an ADM.
    - I know that the other end (at 20km aprox) is disconnected.
    - The A/L led on the SPA, next to the SFP port is steady orange.
So, what status should be shown on the "show interface" output? Right now it's "interface down, line procotol down"
If all is set correctly (logs are clean) should the line protocol be up?
    Should the interface be up?
At the ODF there are 2 connectors (RX and TX) so they might be inverted and I cannot access that, I would need to call the provider and don't want to do it unless if it necessary.
    Thanks.

The problem is probably the result of an mismatch between the optical transceiver (SFP) in the ASR1006 and the service provider's ADM.
You need to know from the service provider what type of interface (speed, reach [1000BASE-?X]) they have installed in their ADM connecting to your equipment.  Typically, for an in-building interconnection, between the termination equipment and the service provider's equipment, they would be using a short reach interface (1000BASE-SX), which would operate over multimode fiber or maybe a long reach interface (100BASE-LX), which can run over MMF or SMF. The 1000BASE-ZX SFP is designed for very long links (up to 70 kilometers) and operates at 1550nm over SMF fiber. I'm guessing your link between the ASR and ADM is <500 meters.
If everything is functioning properly, the "show interface" would be Interface UP, Line Protocol UP. If their is a transceiver mismatch, the devices may be unable to read the bits to bring the link up.  The client ADM port (facing you) may be shut down as you mentioned the other end of the backbone fiber (20km) is not connected.

  • Is the "show interface brief" command 100% safe?

I am planning on performing a health check on multiple Cisco SAN switches. This check will be performed five or more times a day. I know that the "show" commands are usually safe commands, but I have seen instances where "show tech-support" has caused the supervisor to restart. This type of outage is not acceptable.
    1) Does anyone know of an instance where "show interface brief" has caused any kind of problem?
    2) I currently use Device Manager to perform health checks. Does Device Manager use a "show interface" command to display port states?
    3) What kind of CPU usage does "show interface brief" have on a SAN switch?
    4) Does anyone have a low-level explanation of what happens when a "show interface brief" command is executed?
    5) Is it safe to run "show interface brief" many times a day and every day of the year?

i can tell you that we run "show int fc X" every 5 minutes. We use a perl script that telnets to the switch every 5 minutes, runs "show int fc X" on specific ports, dumps output to log file on the server and then parses it for link status. This is how we monitor our DWDM links.

  • ASR 9000 : Analogue for "show interfaces transceiver"

    Hello!
Is there any convenient way to get the summary for the Rx/Tx power levels (dBm) for all DOM enabled optical interfaces on the system, like "

    Depending on the transceiver type:
    show controller dwdm optics
    show controller sonet
    ...will show that information.

  • Delivery Document has been created - showing the status of Being Processed.

    Hi All.
I am facing the following typical problem.
    1. Sales order has been created - showing the status of COMPLETED.
    2. Delivery Document has been created - showing the status of Being Processed.
    3. Goods Issue document created successfully- showing status as COMPLETE
    4. Billing Document has created successfully - showing the status as COMPLETED.
    5. Customer Account got updated properly.
Query: Despite of completion of SO, DELIVERY, GOODS ISSUED, AND BILLING DOCUMENT u2013 and accounting document is cleared why the outbound Delivery document status is showing as BEING PROCESSED.
If I go T-code Vlo3n see document flow
    Delivery 5080789885 being processed.
Go to VF03 document flow also it is showing
    Delivery 5080789885 being processed.

    Hi ALL,
Further to my query I would like to clarify the following:
It is happening since 2004 all Bom components status (Delivery being processed) all the BOM main items header status is showing completed.
It not impacting the business, but suddenly user raise query SO, DELIVERY, GOODS ISSUED, AND BILLING DOCUMENT completed why still delivery showing as being processed.
    1. I have checked at SO level -- all the line items were delivered. ie: delivery, goods issue, billing completed.
    2. I checked the Header Level data completed and Item Level data being processed.
    3. If I look into the each item level also it is showing as being processed.
    4. Even the SALES ORDER HEADER LEVEL showing the status of Completed.
    5. Removed credit check in delivery.
The only issue is OUTBOUND DELIVERY DOCUMENT: Status alone it is showing as ' Being Processed' -- surprisingly!
    Aditya.
