Show mounted volumes in the Sidebar (not servers)?

Anyone have a Leopard tweak or hack to get the side bar to show mounted volumes (i.e.; share points), rather than servers? I need to see the share points, not the server itself (especially when Kerberos is enabled - its just plain goofy)
I like Leopard's Finder improvements for the most part, but need my sidebar to show discreet mounts like 10.4 (Tiger) did. Idont want to see the entire server thats hosting the mounted volume - thats just plain silly. I can use the "Connect to Server" app for that ( or browse the LAN)
Dragging mounts to the sidebar will work (they show up as "devices"), but they are forgotten after a reboot. Its a temporary solution at best.
Is this a bug? A limitation? A disaster? A feature?

I'm not quite sure what your complaint is. You still have the same option to manually connect via the "Go" menu as with Tiger, do you not? Does this not still result in mounted volumes appearing in the devices list? (BTW, "devices" is the appropriate generic name for them in a UNIX environment -- don't blame Apple for that, it is just following a naming convention older & more established than those of either the Mac or Windows OS's.)
If people are confused by the "Shared" section of the sidebar, which is a convenience item not essential to creating sharing connections, why not just suggest they remove it? A set of Finder preferences exists for this purpose. Deselect all three & no "Sharing" sidebar section will appear. Apple is not forcing anyone to use or see it unless they want to.
Moreover, Apple is not the originator of SMB, which has its origins in DOS, was modified by Microsoft in ways to this day not completely documented in any open standards, & must be reverse engineered for interoperability with other OS implementations. Not surprisingly, it must be configured carefully on the server side with this in mind for it to work reliably, which is no easy task since (among other things) its performance, ease-of-use, & security can't all be maximized at the same time. This is hard enough in a pure Windows Server domain environment, much more difficult in a mixed platform one.
Because of this, it may be premature to blame all the connection anomalies on Leopard and/or Finder's sidebar. A review of the protocols & settings used in your shop's SMB servers' implementation may turn up something helpful here, but that is probably best done by a network specialist familiar with the issues involved.
As a side note (& by way of an example), SMB incorporates "auto-discovery" too, just in a more limited way compared to Bonjour. Typically, to maintain network security, it is configured to auto-discover only on a client's initial contact with the server, & there are sometimes reliability issues with this mechanism on large networks due to latency, which may explain some of the problems your users are having.
So, don't be too quick to blame all this on Leopard alone -- as with all network issues, one must look at the entire network to identify causes & their remedies.

  • Why can't I add network volumes to the sidebar? It just spits them back out?

So it appears the most useful feature of the sidebar, which appears in each and every open dialogue box, is to provide me quick access to working folders.
I work in an office which, unsurprisingly, uses a file server to store files.
Naturally it would be very convenient to drag the various network drives from the file server into my sidebar.
It appears this is just not supported. It just "spits them out" as soon as I drag it in.
Am I doing something wrong? (OSX Lion)
How can the sidebar implementation be so collossally shortsighted? Not everyone stores files on their local mac!

The servers should appear in your sidebar under "shared" whenever they are mounted.

  • Recording 'Volume' with the midi notes??

Has anyone figured out how to get GB-09' to record:
-midi volume at the same time your playing the actual midi notes in? ( all at once )
+maybe expression pedal or volume pedal? or re-mapping sysex, or....
    GB 9' version 5.1 (398)

GB doesn't record volume changes in Real Time, it does, however record velocity (which may appear as volume changes, depending on the instrument)

  • Add bookmark using javascript, it opens in the sidebar, not in the main window

    im using this function:
    function add_bookmark(){
    var title = "My Title";
    var url = "www.myurl.com";
    window.sidebar.addPanel(title, url, "");
it successfully creates a bookmark but when i click on it, it just opens in the sidebar and not in the main window.

Don't use that function as it selects the "Open this bookmark in the sidebar" feature in Properties for the bookmark. That is the way it works in Firefox and it probably won't ever be fixed. Someone filed a Bug about fixing that in Firefox back in 2004 or 2005, and the Mozilla developers marked it as WONTFIX due to perceived security issues with scripts of that sort.

  • Can't mount SAN volume 'cause it already shows mounted.. but it's not

after controller 1 had a problem and controller 2 took over, one volume on one client (of 6) won't mount.
all volumes on all other clients OK..
the error says it's already mounted and looking at
    ls -al /Volumes
    it's there..
looking at df , it's not
    looking at finder, it's not
running diskutil unmount , it's not
    (or mount -u)
so I can't unmount what's there cause it's not there and I can't mount what's not mounted cause it thinks it already is mounted .
    any ideas ??

after a MDC fail-over the finder sometimes creates an alias file with the name of the san volume. after all it's a broken alias.
disconnect the FC cable. in the finder (or terminal), go to /Volumes and remove the broken alias file.

  • Save As... dialog doesn't show mounted volume

Roughly half the iMacs in my lab, Intels running 10.5.8, don't show the server share in the "Save As..." sidebar when the kids need to save a new document. The server shares are mounted ahead of time by a local AppleScript (with password) that is activated by an ARD command. The password is also registered in the keychain in all the iMacs. Might this be a complication of Parental Controls? A keychain issue?
The server is a Mac G5, connected through Ethernet to all the iMacs.
I can force recognition of the share by going backward through the drop-down menu, but that is a bit too complicated for my second graders, and it is time for them to learn to save on their own. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    HB

so, yesterday it worked, then today again it doesn't. Could it be something with icons/themes?
Isn't there some configuration file in my home I could try deleting?

  • All of a sudden, if I go to the Bookmarks Toolbar and click on a site, the sit appears in the Sidebar, not in a tab. How do I fix this?

I was browsing today, and noticed that my Bookmarks Sidebar was missing. I got it to reappear, but now when I try to open a bookmarked site, the site will appear in the narrow space once where the bookmarks were. Any idea as to what happened and what I can do to fix it? I have an iMac, running OSX 10.5.8.

Opening in the side bar is the default for bookmarks that are created via a link or button on a website.<br />
You can check the Properties of a bookmark via the right-click context menu in the side bar (Ctrl+B; Cmd+B on Mac).<br />
In the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks) you can click the More button in the Details pane at the bottom right.<br />
Make sure that "Load this bookmark in the side bar" is not selected.<br />

  • IPhone + Exchange only shows email addy as the sender, not my name

When sending an email from my iPhone, my email address shows (e.g. [email protected]) as the sender instead of my name (e.g. John Doe). This might be an issue with Apple's Exchange setup in iPhone OS 3.x but wondering if this might be an issue with Kerio.
With IMAP only accounts such as MobileMe and Gmail on the iPhone, there is a field to enter the sender's name (e.g. John Doe) in the setup. There is no such field when setting up an Exchange account on the iPhone with 3.x software. So, when I check my sent email, I do not see my name in the 'From' field; only my email address (e.g. [email protected]).
    Any ideas? Thanks, in advance.

This might work.  I had the same problem in Mail on my iMac.
FIrst, login to www.icloud.com.  If your name is right on iCloud, open Mail in the iCloud window and click on the gear icon (prefeences)  You can fix your name there.  On the iMac, I had to wait a few minutes, quit and restart Mail, and check preferences.  Then on starting a new message, there was a pulldown under "From", that I used to select the one with my correct name and correct email address.  I just deleted that blank email, and others since then default to the correct name.
Don't know if this will work for mail sent from the iPhone, but once the Cloud Mail is corrected, hopefully it will do the trick.

  • Prefs code show server volumes in sidebar by default?

I support a K-12 installation of around 4000 Macs, roughly 1000 of which are now running Leopard. I'm creating a new image for these systems, and cleaning up glitches, including this one:
In Tiger, mounted server volume names appeared in the sidebar below the hard drive icon in any Finder window. When you click on the volume name, the contents of that volume are immediately available as any regular disk would be. When you click the eject icon beside the volume name, only that volume is ejected.
In Leopard, the server name appears in the sidebar instead of the volume name. The server name is not particularly meaningful, since it's the volume name which our users recognize. When you click on the server name, a list of available volumes appears after a longish pause. This also creates confusion ("what are those other names?" "can I save there?" "why do these appear?"). When you click the eject icon beside the server name, all mounted volumes are ejected. Many of our education applications don't handle well this new way of accessing server volumes -- some crash, some hang when you click on the server name instead of a volume name. This is a serious reduction in ease of use for our end-users! Now they have to deal with the confusion of clicking on an unfamiliar item like the server's name, then figure out which share they want to use, and finally save their document ("why can't I save to the server like I can save to my USB key?").
I haven't yet found a way to reproduce Tiger Finder's shared-volume-in-the-sidebar behaviour as a default, beyond manually dragging each server volume to the sidebar (not an ideal solution, since volume names change, and servers change). Is there some XML key I can add to the Finder prefs to revert to the old way of displaying server volumes in the sidebar?

    Hi,
I have the same problem (and there are threads archived starting 2007 dealing with the same issue) This is not a SERVER problem. Its simply that the 10.5 finders sidebar does not show mounted volumes or mountpoints anymore. Instead of that you see whole servers, which makes navigation slow.
Any way to get TIGERS behaviour back?

  • Mounted Volume Not Showing On Desktop or Sidebar

Our company uses a Mac Mini running OS 10.10 Yosemite to share files. File Sharing is setup to share contents on the Mac Mini with other Macs and PCs. Sharing is working fine. However, in the last couple days when logging into the Mac Mini the mounted volume (Mac Mini) no longer shows on the desktop, sidebar or when accessing the client hard drive. In order to access the Mac Mini after mounting via log in an alias to the Mac Mini needs to be created and access via the alias. Folders from the Mac Mini can be added to the side bar and accessed that way, but the main folder for the Mac Mini is only accessible through the alias. Preferences in the Finder are set to show mounted volumes and servers on the desktop.
Computers accessing the Mac Mini are running OS 10.6, 10.9, 10.8.

Check the settings in the General tab of the Finder's preferences.

  • External Mounted Hard Drive Icon Not Showing on Desktop nor on Sidebar

    Bonjour,
I have a portable drive that does NOT show up in the Sidebar nor on the Desktop. The only way I can see and navigate through it is by clicking in Disk Utility > Mount Point: <hyper-link>
Then hard drive icon and its content show up fine. But the HD icon is slightly dimmed (it is paler than the all other - HD, computer, etc - icons).
I verified the external HD and it is just fine. I have another eDrive (TechTool Pro 4) partition and it shows up like any normal HDs normally does.
How can I get the icon to show up back into the Sidebar and the Desktop?
Is there a "Preference" file I need to throw out?
Is there a UNIX command I could execute to make it show up again?
    Thanks for your assistance.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
    tell application "System Events"
set visible of (choose folder with invisibles) to false
    end tell
When prompted, select your hard disk in the dialog box. Next, log out and back in.
