Show movie duration in finder

Hi all,
Is there a way to make Finder show the length of movie files in a folder, either as a column in list view or underneath the filename, similar to the way it shows image dimensions? This seems to be working on a folder full of .mp4 files I have, but if the formats are mixed, no dice.
All help appreciated.

MikkyX,
By default QuickTime can play mp4 files so it can calculate duration of the movie. If the video format is something that QuickTime cant read, then movie duration will not be shown.
Mostly you must be having other player to play other video formats like AVI or MKV or anything. If you are having plugins for QuickTime to play these files also then it should show duration in the finder.

I thought a screen dump of the sttus may help picture what I am looking at.

    Mike,
That article did seem to confirm that it is not as straight forward as it might seem. Since then I have deleted some of the TV episodes I downloaded on iTunes and the available storage has increased, so I can only assume that when reviewing in finder the files for iTunes are not shown and it would appear one has to go into iTunes to delete them.
I guess I may need to set up an external hard drive to store TV series etc as long as it is easy to transfer between the external drive and the MAC and subsequently my iPad as well, but that is for another discussion.

  • AVI movie duration in File Info?

Whenever AVI movie is selected in Finder brief File Info is listed including Preview in right panel. It contains such fields as Kind, Size, etc. and Duration. Unfortunately Duration field of all AVI files is empty (--). Is it possible somehow to make this field showing real number?
Otherwise I have to open every movie in Quicktime -> FileInfo to get movie Duration.

Spotlight reads file metadata (image dimensions, video dimension/duration for example), then Finder reads Spotlight's index and displays the information in column view and in the "Get Info" window. That's the basic concept, your/our problem is an issue caused by Spotlight.
Spotlight misses a plugin (*.mdimporter) telling it to read the metadata from .avi files. CoreMedia.mdimporter in System/Library/Spotlight links to .mov, .mpg, .mp4, .3ggp only. Well, to QuickTime's core media formats, you know.
A workaround is to save .avi files as .mov files ("movie container") in QuickTime Player. The file will not be exported/encoded in any way, it will simply be "compressed" in a container, kind of zipped, and Spotlight will read the information. It's just the file extension. In QuickTime 7 you have to select "self-contained movie", otherwise you'll create an alias. QuickTime X saves self-contained movies by default. Of course, this only works, if your .avi file opens with QuickTime Player...
A solution may simply be to edit the Info.plist in CoreMedia.mdimporter. I don't know. Most likely not, much too simple. And then there's still Code Signature.

  • How do I upload videos from an SD card to the movies folder in Finder on my iMac?

I'm having trouble uploading videos from my SD card to my iMac. I'm wanting to save it in the "Movies" folder in Finder. When I open the SD card on my iMac, I am able to view the videos in QuickTime Player. They were an AVCHD file format. It gave me no option of saving the videos - not even with dragging them. So, I tried moving all of the files versus just one (in other words, instead of opening the file to view all of the videos, I just dragged the whole file without opening it).  It saved to my iMac, but in the same way as it was on the SD card - I wasn't able to actually save the videos themselves. They were only able to be viewed with QuickTime Player - I couldn't do anything else with them. So, I took my SD card out of the computer and put it back in the video camera. I then realized than I could not view the videos in the camera - they wouldn't show up. I then plugged the SD card back into the iMac. The videos were now saved under a BDMV folder versus the AVCHD folder they had been under earlier. The AVCHD folder was there, but would not open. When I tried to open it, all it said was, "This operation could not be completed." The BDMV folder allows me to view the videos in QuickTime Player, but I still cannot save them to my iMac from the SD card. I even tried saving the videos to iPhoto by dragging the BDMV folder into iPhoto. All it did was say, "The following files could not be imported. The file is in an unrecognizable format." So, now, I am completely confused as to what I need to do as to save the videos onto my computer, and even how the videos are now saved under a BDMV folder versus the original AVCHD folder in the SD card. I'd greatly appreciate it if someone could help me with this problem. Thanks!

You should have an icon of the SD card on the desktop - do you? If not, go to Finder Preferences > General and make sure these items are checked to show:
Once the icon is showing, you can just drag the card content to your desktop. It depends on what you want to do with the video - just watch or edit in iMovie to share online or burn a DVD?

I opened my iPhoto library today which was stored on an external hard drive and several of my videos now will not play at all. The weird thing is that each file shows a duration of 1 second and when I open them it just shows one frame. What the !&%$#@ Where did my original video files go?

Sounds like a good plan, you can never be to safe and having a second External HD is safer than one.
The only thing that I would do different, is setup the 3T as my TimeMachine Backup and then erase and move my Photos, Videos and perhaps even iTunes Media to the 1T. That way you will have room to backup both the Internal Hard Drive and the 1T External Hard Drive to the 3T using TimeMachine.
Take your time, study and use the > Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions if you get stuck or aren't sure how to make the move.

  • Show icon preview in finder problem

the other day when i was using the cover flow in finder to go through old photos finder stopped showing the icon previews for all my photos. toggling the option to show the icon preview doesn't seem to be doing, any idea what might've happened?

    2point5 wrote:
If I can hazard a guess it's possibly a memory availability issue given that it has to generate a thumbnail of the images on the fly and may be struggling as you navigate through more and more images.
I've had this same problem for a long time. I thought it must be either a memory or free disk space availability issue because in my case it appears to be brought on by Photoshop CS3. After i use Photoshop for a little while, new icon previews stop being generated entirely, as if they've been switched off.
I now have 7 GB of RAM, with Photoshop capped at 72%. I've tried reducing that percentage and i've moved all Photoshop scratch files to other drives with no change.
I used to be short of disk space on my main drive and i thought it might be a virtual memory issue. But i currently have 32 GB available.
*I bring previews back by using Force Quit to relaunch the Finder.*
Then i have to move all the Finder windows back to the "Spaces" i had them in. 10 minutes later they're gone again.

  • Slide Show Movies?

Forgive such a simple question, can you do slide show movies in Final Cut?
My niece is a photographer who would like to present her clients with a slide show movie complete with an original soundtrack. iMovie & iPhoto just don't cut it.
I know it seems ridiculous to look at final cut for slide show movies, just nothing else has yielded the results.
Can one work with .jpeg in Final Cut? I saw no mention of it on the Apple site. Please enlighten me.
We are looking to produce professional quality DVD's. of photo shoots with the ability to edit photos & music simultaneously in the timeline.
    TY

Sure you can. I have a client who hires me a couple of times a year to do one for her.
Yes you can use JPEG. Some things to remember. Know your settings. A 4x3 screen size will translate into a 720x480pixels graphic at 72 dpi. Now, most digital photos are larger than that and Final Cut will translate those to screen size when you import. However, if you are scanning snapshots that's a handy thing to keep in mind.
Animated backgrounds work great under photos that are vertical. Otherwise they will appear over black which is okay but boring.
If you produce/scan your photos and save as a photoshop file you will be able to manipulate individual layers.
To save time, I lay my music on the time line then I highlight all of the photos I want and drag and drop then using "overwrite-with-transition." This will give you a dissolve between each photo. You can change duration of the photos from there to match to you song. Of course if you don't want dissolves just edit them one all at once or one at a time.
    Good luck...anything else.

  • Problem showing movies.

Why can I no longer show movies on my iPad 3?  Netflix, YouTube, my own home movies? Opens to location. Picture shows, but freezes with no sound.  Netflix works on my TV, so I know it's not Netflix problem. Also no longer have sounds (sending emails, etc.).  No other problems with iPad. Thanks!

To clarify - The import looks to be ok right up until the end of the progression bar. It then chooses 1 or 3 outcomes. All being well it imports the dot mov file and it plays ok. That's only half the time though. The other half it either deletes the dot mov file it's been building up (verified by refreshing finder to see the megabytes climbing) or it leaves it there, but iMovie refuses to acknowledge it's presence. If I use Finder on the dot mov file it only has sound and no video.
Really would appreciate some help as clearly the last guy that had this fixed it, but didn't say how.

  • Show movement in area from 30m video, smart objects - stack mode - range - 90k frames

    Hey,
So I have a real challenge and need help figuring out the logistics of how to get it to work sensibly.
I'm trying to visually show the movement through a space (which will later be generated into a 3d form etc..)
To do this I think the best way would be to use photoshops smart objects - Stack modes - "Range"
A final image to show movement through the area.
Lighter where people walk more often and darker where people walk less often
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Photosho...44D6937Ca.html
Range basically shows everything that has moved between the layers.
If you import a video frames into layers in photoshop, make them a smart object and apply the range stack mode it shows peoples movement and where they walk.
So thats what I'm going to do unless there is a better way to do this in something like after effects or premiere pro that I don't know about?
    - I've done the photoshop way before and it worked very well - but on a very small scale.
I have a 30 minute video recording (considering longer but not sure if its viable), it was shot on a tripod and seems ok but can always do it again differently if needed!
The video was shot at 1920 x 1080 50fps which with 30 minutes (1800 seconds) makes 90,000 frames total for the video.
    The problem
I need the info from ALL the frames - any less and the movement is too 'choppy' and isn't very useful.
So how can I make use of 90,000 frames/layers in a smart object for the range stack mode?!
I heard photoshop has a layer limit of 8k.
I have access to 6 high spec brand new mac pros (not 100% sure of the spec).
I'm thinking the solution would be use scripts and break it down into manageable chunks then flatten then merge them together.
    Possible Solutions
    1. Merging frames from each second or few seconds and then blending - not sure what blend mode I would use and also not sure if it would affect results
    2. chop the image down into sections, process each section, flatten and merge together. for example split it into 4 quarters. - Don't think this will help, its more the limits in layers than anything else
    3. Find an alternative method to deliver the image such as after effects.
on a side note I know I could have done a long exposure, done many before, but they don't really show movement, they simply blend the frames. The downside of long exposures for this exercise is that things could cancel each other out, for example; a man with a white top on walks past then a man with a black top walks past, these would cancel each other out to some degree.
The Range smart stack mode is brilliant because it directly shows movement and people don't cancel others out.
    Help
    Where can you help?
So basically if this is the correct way to do this then can anyone help with this and suggest any ways of breaking it down that wouldn't affect the final result?
Someone that knows more of how range stack mode works.
Correct me if I'm wrong with any of this and please let me know if you can help at all
    Thanks!
    Luke.
    Context
For context the final thing has to be something that doesn't change in time, i.e. not a video but an image or model. This image will then be skewed a bit so its a plan view. It will then be used for another script in a 3d package like rhino which will create a number of points in space, the x and y axis being the location in plan view and the Z axis being the value of the pixel. I will then generate a solid form from the points and then smooth it out a lot so I should end up with a 3d wave model directly generated from the movement of people through the site. I will then architecturally design the form into spaces etc... This will form the surface of my final project
Heres an example of the first 500 frames (500 frames limit on video frames to layers import)
The footage isnt the best as I moved the camera slightly and the angle isnt amazing - ideally I want a plan view but will skew the final image to do this.

But I have a concern that if I break it down to 300 images (6 seconds of footage) then stack then flatten the stack until its dont the whole 30 mins then use these flattened ones to create a new stack it would affect results as it will then be working with images like the above.
That should be easy enough to test (if maybe not exactly proof) – for Range it seems to make no difference, for Variance it seems to do.
Also why use 16 bit image mode?
To reduce the accumulated effect of the necessary rounding of pixel values.

  • Show shaded rows in Finder

After a recent update (it might have been to Mountain Lion 10.8.3 last week, I'm not sure), Finder came up and it had alternately shaded rows (shaded, then not shaded, then shaded, then not shaded and so on).  It reminded me of the old computer green-bar paper.  I liked the look of that as it help distinguish rows when I had Finder in full screen and was showing a long list.  The next day I went into Finder and the rows were no longer shaded.  All rows were clear/white.  I miss what I had and have been unable to find a way to turn that feature back on.  Any ideas?

In iPhoto I was able to right-click on single picture or even on an event to show the images in Finder.
Now I see this option in the File menu of Photos, but it's greyed out. Why?
You can only reveal original image files in the Finder, that have been imported as referenced . Files stored inside the Photos Library cannot be revealed in the Finder.
    See this Help Page:   https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/pht1ed9b966d
Store imported files outside the Photos library
Choose Photos > Preferences, then click General.
Deselect the “Copy items to the Photos library” checkbox. Now, when you import photos or video, Photos leaves the files in their original location and accesses them as referenced files.
Copy referenced files into a Photos library
You can copy referenced files into your photo library so they’re easier to back up and are automatically included in your iCloud Photo Library.
Select the files that you want to move into the photo library.
    Choose File > Consolidate.
    Click Copy.

  • No device shows up in the finder side bar

Hi, I found that my USB flash drive doesn't shows up in the finder side bar, although it has been mounted and can be accessed when I search the name of my USB flash drive in the spotlight. Actually not only is the USB flash drive but nothing shows up in the device sectino of the side bar, what would be the potential problem for this?

Move the cursor over the DEVICES line in the sidebar. If the word Show appears on the right, click it.

  • Movie Duration -0.033333 & FramePositiongControl not support mapTimeToFram

Hi When I play a video with JMF (DX50 encding), it gives the movie duration as -0.033333 and it says the FrameControlPositioning does not support mapTimeToFrame. The video opens but does not play.
Please let me know what could the problem be?
    Thanks
    PLN

    Hi,
I was using JFFMPEG plugins for playing DX50 with JMF. I got a workaround for the problem I posted above.
It looks like there is some header issue in the recoded avi. When I open the video with VirtualDub and just save it again giving a different name (Direct Stream Copy), the problem is resolved (JMF now shows the correct length of video).
By the way, is there any alternative to JMF? I want to play MPEG4 or H264 encoding with JMF but I think JMF does not support them. Is there any way I can get JMF to play them? Any plugins?
    Thanks

  • Movie Widget not displaying movie duration times properly

Is this happening to anyone else? It would list a movie like Hancock for 3 hrs but it's really an hour and a half. I know it's a Fandango widget so I went to Fandango online and the movie duration on the website is correct.
It's just annoying cuz I can't trust the widget. I have to look up the movie duration separately. Anyone have any solution or fixes for this or is this happening to your widget?
    Thanks,

I have the exact problem that you describe, but have thus far not been able to find an answer.
If anyone has any ideas it would be great.

The best solution I've come across so far is to dump all movies into a shareware app called iVI. It'll show whether each movie has subtitles or not.
