Show & tell your business iWeb site?

I'm in the early stages of designing & planning my business website. I'm wondering what others have accomplished along such lines with iWeb. Anyone up for show & tell?
Thanks,

Hi. So my website is: www.ymcacampbenson.org

Anyone know how I can make my site show up https?

  • Photos on iWeb site

Is it possible to save your iDisk space by putting photos on your .Mac iWeb site from another website you are with. Maybe thats not very clear.... I have a 'pro' flickr account that I bought before I got my .Mac account as a gift. Is it possible to build my .Mac website from the photo's I have already on my Flickr account to save loading them to my iDisk and therefore saving space?
It's just I plan to put a lot of photos on my site and don't want it to eat up all my space. I realise, I could just continue with my photos on Flickr, but I really like the format of the .Mac sites better and plan on selling some of my prints through the site.
    Any help would be great,
    David

I may have read too much into your plans.
I'm not, by any means, an expert with Flickr so bear with me.
IF the files in Flickr are accessible with "http" commands, it's real easy to add a hyperlink in your iWeb site to bring the viewer to Flickr. The minor difficulty is that you want only SOME viewers to reach Flickr. IF Flickr access can be PW-protected, it's a slam-dunk.
If not, it might be a little klutzy. You'll need to create a second iWeb site that's PW-protected. The hyperlink in your main iWeb site brings the viewer to the PW-protected iWeb site and, for those that can access it, another hyperlink will take them to Flickr.

My hard drive broke and now I have a new one installed. I would like to download/manage my iweb-mobileme site from this new hard drive. How can I sync the new disc with my mobileme?

    tragicoptimist wrote:
How can I sync the new disc with my mobileme?
You can't sync your published iWeb site from MobileMe back to a new disk. Only iWeb's Domain file can be opened in iWeb. See this Apple doc on How to back up MobileMe data. It says:
Any websites you have published with iWeb should still be available within iWeb. iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb.
You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up.
See also this Apple doc: _iWeb: Backing up your Domain file_
Paragraph 2.3 of this FAQ page gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

  • Is it possible to transfer my long IWeb site to husband's unused IWeb site?

I have a .mac account (MBPro). I've been publishing my IWeb 1.1.2 site (web.mac.com/myname) for a while now through the Iweb application, and it's gotten too big. I'd like to take my whole site, as is, and copy it to my husband's .mac IWeb that he doesn't use. I wouldn't be making any changes to what I have thus far published on my own site once it's on my husband's computer (MB). I would simply like to start a "clean" site on my computer for faster upload/download and make a link in my site to my husband's published "new" site (web.mac.com/hisname). Another reason for wanting to do this is that my web address is what our friends/family already have, and I don't want to have to change that if I don't have to. Is this possible? If so, how?

iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder — although it can be moved:
_iWeb 1.1: Changing your Domain file default location_
You don't need to transfer that to the MB to have a "clean" site on your MBPro. IWeb can handle multiple Domain files containing multiple sites. See this article:
_How do you manage multiple Domain files?_.
First, backup your MBPro's iWeb Domain file on media separate from your MBPro — although the following doc talks about iWeb '08, I believe it also applies to iWeb '06:
_iWeb ’08: Backing up your Domain file_
...You can also keep another copy of the Domain file on your MBPro's internal HD — so you have two backups of it, just in case. You could use the MB to store a backup of the Domain file, but you risk confusion — better to keep things simple with a proper backup on separate media dedicated to being a backup.
With your old site's Domain file safely stored away, in iWeb you can remove the pages from your current iWeb site and rename the site. (You can try deleting the site, but if it's the only one, that option may be greyed out in iWeb's Edit menu.)
Although you won't be involving the MB at all to do what you currently want to do, these Apple docs may help in the future:

  • IWeb vs. RapidWeaver for small business web site development

I am going to develop a web site for our small tour business that would contain descriptive text, pictures, testimonials, and an e-mail link that cannot be swept by bots. I have been scouring the forums about iWeb 2.0 and am hearing that there are a number of factors that limit it's suitability for a commercial web site. I would appreciate some feedback on the following points.
    1. Would using an iWeb 2.0 template cause display problems on a PC running Internet Explorer; Microsoft does not follow approved web standards?
    2. I would want search engines to find and index our site so that people could find it using Google or Yahoo. I understand that .Mac blocks access by spiders, but you can manually list your site with Google. Is this true?
    3. I want to use our domain name in the e-mail address, is this possible with iWeb?
    4. I would also like to use my .Mac account to host a site about my grandchildren using the iWeb generated URL, this doesn't seem possible if I have listed my business domain name.
    5. Does anyone have any experience using RapidWeaver? This seems to be very iWeb like and may be a better solution for a small business.
    6. Should I just use iWeb for the grandkids and RapidWeaver for the business, I have never written an line of code in my life and need something that is truly WYSIWYG.
    Thank you for your feedback!

Hi There, I'll give you my info based on what I know and i'm sure otheres will correct me where they have other experiences....
    1. all websites have niggles regardless of what program you use to create them with, iWeb sites are pretty good for compatibility, but as with any site, the more 'stuff' you add, fancy code or funny image types there wil lbe a number of people who have problems. I've found iWeb to be far less troublesome than sites generated from scratch using other programs, even dreamweaver (i'm a graphic designer).
    2. dunno about .mac blocking stuff, but i've done commercial sites for clients that I've submitted to Google and they show up just fine when searched for.
    3. e-mail address can be ANYTHING. for example you could even put a link to send me mail if you wanted. it is literally just a link to open someones mail program and add a mail address / subject ready for them to send.
    4. You can set iWeb / .Mac to use a specific address that you have purchased. and you can have multiple domains from within iWeb.you can't directly publish sites to more than one address, but you can publish to folders and upload to different addresses, or if you make more than one site in iWeb, the first in th elist will become the one that your browser goes to using th emain address (www.yourdomin.com), but you'd stil lbe able to have other sites with their own sub address (www.yourdomain.com/grandkids) for example. you can even add password protection to different sites so your clients don't see photos of you and the grandkids lounging in the garden the day you said you were doing their job!
    5. I can happily use Flash Dreamweaver, iWeb and plenty of other stuff, but found Rapidweaver to be a poor version of iWeb. It has certain benfits, but it is nowhere near as user friendly. I'd start with iWeb regardless, and see how you get on. Plenty of people have trouble enough with iWeb and it's basically a no-brainer compared to anything else out there - (short of yahoo webbuilder (pretty good for freebie!)
Just beware of the iWeb templates, they are getting very well known and don't lend themsleves to looking very professional. but use iWeb as a program to put together a simple site and it is easy to use and gets pretty tidy results. see here for simple site done with iWeb without using templates, and resulting in a more pro look and doesn't look like everyone elses site.
    http://www.garethmorris.com
    6. if you've never even tried editing HTML you want iWeb i promise you. it really is the best for starting offf with, and like i say if you design your own site rather than just using the templates without changing stuff you can get some good results - and quickly / easily.

  • How do I stop my iWeb site folder name from showing in the URL?

I have looked through the forum but cannot find exactly what I need.
I am sure there is a way to stop this from happening but I do not want my iWeb site name to show in the URL. Anyone else had this problem that can spread some light on the situation?
Here is how it is showing:
    www.ilovehopetown.com/ILove_Hope_Town/The_Ultimate_Guide_To_HopeTown.html
I want to to just be www.ilovehopetown.com and then the page name.
    Any help will be appreciated.

What happens if I leave Site name blank?
    Try it and see.
If you are using iWeb 09, the right forum to ask things in is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1309
Two options you could try are naming your site the same as the default folder used by your sever (e.g. public_http or whatever) or forwarding www.myname.com to www.myname.com/sitename

  • Business catalyst site is not showing up on web searches

I built my site in Muse and published directly from Muse onto Adobe Business Catalyst. It has been a couple of months and this site is not showing up on web searches. I believe it has something to do with my Business Catalyst settings. Frustration has set in and I'm turning to this commuity to seek direction. The site is edgeadvertising.ca
Should I be looking at Googles webmaster tools?

    Hi edgydoug1,
You have a challenging case since "Edge Advertising" appears to be a common business name with many other established websites for "Edge Advertising" or "Cutting Edge Advertising" businesses around the world.
First, I'm going to contradict Gaurav. I may be interpreting what I see on Google incorrectly, but it looks to me as though Google has indexed your site. It's a one page site. Correct?
A few things you'll want to do to improve the chances searchers will find your site:
    1) Set the Page Title for your page in the Page Properties dialog. I recommend setting it to your business name. You might consider including Winnepeg in the page title, since that will increase the odds that someone looking for "Edge Advertising" in your area will find you, rather than the Edge Advertising in Washington, D.C., Tampa Bay, Fairport, NY, Houston Texas, etc.
    2) You might consider putting your contact information where your copyright currently is.
    3) Enter keywords for your page in the Page Properties dialog Metadata panel. Be sure to include Winnepeg and Manitoba (spelled out), along with your business name and the services you provide.
    4) Pay special attention to where you apply h1, h2, h3 tags via paragraph styles. You should probably make the main "Edge Advertising" title the h1 for the page.
There are two primary factors to SEO, indexing and page ranking.
Indexing is about making sure your pages have content that corresponds to what your prospective customer will be searching for. This generally means choosing ~3 search phrases and doing what you can to be sure those phrases and the words in those phrases are used in your site. Your site has quite a bit of live text content, so you're probably doing well but you'll want to think about search phrases and see how well they correspond to words and phrases in your content.
With a single page site you're limited to a single page title and no filename for the HTML file (since it will be index.html), so you'll want to make sure the page title is good and you make good use of h1, h2, h3 tags. You may also want to add alt tags to your images (if you haven't already). And keywords in your metadata.
Page ranking is largely about the number of other sources (websites, twitter, facebook, blogs, etc.) that contain links into your site. If lots of other sites are referring to your site, your page ranking will be higher relative to other sites with similar page content.
Again, given the business name is not unique and many of the other businesses with the same name are likely to offer the same services, it's going to be difficult to differentiate your site to web searchers. You'll want to make sure the geographic location of your business is prominent along with the principals and anything else that may be unique to your business (that also known to web surfers).
Finally, when you make a change to your site, if you submit your sitemap.xml file to Google using Webmaster Tools it theoretically will encourage Google to re-index your site sooner, though there's no guarantees how long it will take.

  • Hosting your IWeb site

    Hi,
I want to change my local IWeb site and upload it to a server host....(For example: "http://www.machighway.com") Will I be able to upload files just as they are locally and drop them unto the server? Otherwise, who offers the most affordable monthly plans for hosting an IWeb Site

What's affordable depends on how much you want to spend and where you live.
Here's one for starters. Its free and if you like it you can pay for it and get a free domainname :
    www.000webhost.com
I use several of these webhosts, besides MobileMe.
Or do your own webhosting. Either on your own computer or on an external one.
Since I was in need of backup anyway I bought a Synology DS211 NAS with two 3TB Seagate harddisks.
    bit.ly/pDg4Ka
    bit.ly/oFa9j5
It has all the bells and whistles to run your own show. I just need to learn how to bell and whistle, lots of UNIX inside.
Today I got the mailserver up and running with my own domainname, so now you can reach me too.
The coming months I start migrating my website from MMe. But first I must get aquainted with some httpd.config directives I want to use on my current computer before I configure the NAS.
    So lots of fun ahead.
    Here are the pictures, BTW

  • Moving my iWeb site and need to tell iTunes

I currently have podcasts on iTunes that I posted using iWeb and MobileMe.  I'm about to move my iWeb-produced site to another provider, but I can't figure out how to tell iTunes that the site has moved.  Where in iWeb do you put in "tags"?!?  The directions on http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html doesn't match anything that I can do in iWeb.  Where in iWeb do you find the feed and metadata?  Where in iWeb do you set it up so that it returns an HTTP 301 response?  Or would it just be easier to tell iTunes to kill my current podcasts and then in a few days resubmit my podcasts as something new?

You can do this but it's a bit messy. Go to your iDisk, to the Web/Sites folder, and in the folder which has the name of your podcast locate the feed file - I think it's called rss.xml, but anyway it should be obvious. Download this.
Open this in TextEdit in plain text mode, not Rich Text which may be the default. Add this line just below the 'channel' tag:
    <itunes:new-feed-url>URL OF YOUR NEW FEED</itunes:new-feed-url>
Make absolutely sure the URL is correct - if you make an error you will not be able to retrieve it.
Save: TextEdit may try to add .txt on the end - don't let it. Make sure the filename and extension are exactly the same as before. Upload this to the same folder on your iDisk, replacing the original.
DO NOT publish from iWeb to your iDisk again or you will overwrite this change. Leave the file there until MobileM closes. You do not need to notify the iTunes Store. Subscribers will see the change at once (they won't notice it) and the Store will probably take a couple of days to pick it up.

  • How do you hyperlink a rollover to another page from within your iweb site?

Ive made a bunch of rollovers for my iweb navigation bar. If youve created a rollover you know you have to link the images to a image hosting site. here as you would just normally drag and drop a image from your desk top. Because of the way iweb works, if you are using images from a image hosting sit, you can no longer adjust the characteristics of the images i.e. colors, size, and in this case the hyperlink. More specifically you cant change the hyperlink to a page within the iweb site.
So the problem im trying to figure out is how to link the rollover to a page within my iweb site.
now you can actually change the hyperlink of the rollover. however you must do this by adjusting the html within the snippet of the rollover. The problem i found is that iweb doesnt creat sub domains for each page. a entire iweb site with multible pages uses only one domain which is the homepage. so i cant just type a subdomain of another page into the snippet hyperlink because the subdomain doesnt exist.
here is the link to my site. youll notice i did figure out a work around with the "contact us" button but its a huge pain in the butt. i had to create a new domain and a new site then attach the referal index.html to that new domain. todo this for every single button is very difficult.
    http://springgardenranch.tk
so i guess the bigger question is, is there a easier way to do this?
perhaps if there was a way to create a subdomains like springgardenranch.tk/contactus withing iweb for each page. but i dont even know if thats possible.
    thanks for you help.

Because of the way iweb works, if you are using images from a image hosting sit, you can no longer adjust the characteristics of the images i.e. colors, size, and in this case the hyperlink.
Then use  your own images. Then you can create them the way you want.
    Here's how I do it :
    http://cafenoir.atspace.com/Hover/
And here's the menu in an iWeb page :
    http://cafenoir.atspace.com/HNBF/
And here you can learn how to do it. Follow the links to the How-To pages.
    http://cafenoir.atspace.com/
You may have to learn HTML. CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, DOM and how iweb creates its webpages.

  • Iweb site not showing up in firefox version 3.0

i recently published my iweb site to a folder and put it up on a hosting site, it used to be at .mac, but well...
anyway the photo album part of the pages is not showing up in the firefox at my work: 3.0
but it works fine in safari...
    any suggestions?
    www.thebeautyseeker.com

I'm having the same problem. I just published a blog with photo pages, but the photos do not load using Firefox 3.0. They show just fine using Safari. I've not tried it yet with Explorer, but friends who have logged in have not complained about not seeing the photos, so I suspect the problem is specific to Firefox.
Anyone have an idea what the problem might be?

  • How do I get an iWeb site to show up on a google search?

How do I get an iWeb site to show up on a google search?

How soon will the GA page indicate that the code has been added and tracking started? I added the code to the my Demo and Tutorial Contents pages and GA still indicates that tracking hasn't been installed.
I am using the full url to the analytics.js file in the HTML snippet:
    newScript.src = 'http://web.me.com/toad.hall/js/demoanalytics.js';
The file shows up in the Activity window. I've done the same for the contents page of my tutorial site with the same results. The two sites are Tutorials and Demo.

  • IWeb site registered but not showing up in Google

I've registered my iweb site through google's webmaster tools using DNS since my domain name is registered through go daddy. I've also got an account for it on google analytics using iWeb SEO but when i search google for my site, nothing shows up. I've even typed my website in verbatim and I still get nothing.
is there something else I need to do to get my site listed? I've started adding title tags and meta data to my most important pages (home and blog) to see if that would help. When I had my blog on wordpress and verified it through google webmaster it showed up the next day in search and i didn't even have to do any of the SEO like meta data.
I feel like i've missed a step, or maybe iweb is not as easily indexed?
    HELP!

Further information regarding the details would be helpful. However, if the site is unreachable it may be due to a known issue between GoDaddy and MobileMe. I spoke with tech support today regarding a similar issue with a iweb account that I have a DNS for through GoDaddy. The issue is being looked at by the support team and hopefully will be resolved quickly, but it I was advised that the issue appears to be from attacks on the iweb side which require the DNS address to be taken offline temporarily.
