Show uninstalled .pfm font names in Windows 7?

I have a bunch of old fonts that I've kept each time I upgraded to a new computer or OS (WIndows 95 to XP and now Windows 7). In the past, I've always been able to easily pick out which fonts I wanted to install uning Adobe Type Manager. Well, ATM doesn't work in Win 7. I can install fonts just fine BUT trying to figure out which particular file to install is the problem. I can see the files names like pvw3__.pfm, but I don't know which font that is. I can discover the font name if I double click on the .pfm file,  but clicking on each one indivivually to try and find the one I want is painfully slow. Is there some utility or setting that will show uninstalled font names?

bump: Please someone help with this solution. I have found that ttf can have "Title" enabled in details view (right click on the columns and check the "Title" and this will work to show the names. But this does not work for pfm/pfb files. Pleae someone help.

  • UI font name in Windows? I disabled mine.

I need to know the name of the UI font for Photoshop CS2. Upon startup I keep receiving the "UI font not found" error. I have over 1000 ttf and ps fonts and occasionally disable some of them; to keep that piece of Windows XP stuff working corectly. Must have disabled the font. Don't really want to enable all the fonts. The system would crash.

Thanks R_Kelly for your reply. I found the ADMUI3.fon in my G:\ttl folder; which is where I keep all my non postscript fonts.
Now, all I have to do is to remember how to get ATMfn4 to reactivate that font - it doesn't show it as available - and I'll be ok. Or may be I'll just move it into K:\ps9; which is where psCS2 is installed, or may be into C:\windows\fonts. I've forgotten how to install fonts on Win XP. May be they just need to be moved, but then again this is a .fon file and I'm only really used to .pfb's or .ttf's or .otf's.

I believe the ui font for cs2 is ADMUI3.fon. If you look in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Required is that font in the folder.

  • Cannot install PFM font file in Windows 7

    Hi,
I am not able to install a PFM font file within the Windows 7 font directory.. I have tried by right clicking on the file and 'dragging and dropping' the file, either way I receive an error message indicating that the "file does not appear to be a valid font'. I have full permissions on my machine. The file was sent over as an email attachment, could the file be corrupt?
    The file is called "GEI_rg.pfm".
    Thank you!

For future reference, apparently installing old Type 1 postscript fonts on Windows 7 can be a bit tricky. There is an thread HERE where Dov Isaacs explains how to do it.

  • Get font-name on windows/dialogs

    Greetings to All.
I require some info on how to get the font-name of all the dialogs, JFrame etc opened from running my swings project. It can be printed out to some kind of log.
font.properties lists the typical fonts but I am not sure if they are reset in other classes inbetween or in the toolKit. [using jdk1.4.2]
    Thanks for any info.
    Regards,
    Chandra

You can see all those fonts using ShowUIDefaults program (below), just run UI defaults using 1.4.2_xx and 1.5.0_xx and you will see any differences in the fonts.

  • Font name different on another computer

We have a font that InDesign CS3 is seeing as a different name on just one of four computers. In other words, 3 computers see the name as "My TNTFont" but that one computer is seeing it as "My TNT Font."
This is a font we created so the name could have changed at some point since it was used on the troublesome computer. I tried deleting all those silly .lst files that Adobe puts all over the place but to no avail.
Is there some other place where a list of font is being kept or some other thing that InD is reading?
    Thanks for the help,
    Ken

Well, I found a work around but, alas, Adobe has defeated/deflated me by hiding something, somewhere in which a font name is associated with a font FILEname.
I decided had to rename ANOTHER font and had the same issues. I was UNABLE to get InDesign to display the new font names (it was a family). I deleted every adobefnt*.lst file I could find as well as the c:\Windows\system32\FNTCACHE.DAT (hoping against hope) but to no avail. InDesign was still showing the old font names.
Wondering WHAT InD could be looking at, I renamed the font FILE and reloaded the new fonts, opened InDesign, used those fonts (which now showed the correct names!!!) and closed InDesgin. Loading the fonts from a different location did NOT do it, I had to rename the font file. After closing InD, unloading the renamed font files and reloading the original font files, InD saw the names as correct.
So, somewhere, somehow InD associates font names, with a font FILEnames.
    Just rediculous.
All the best and thanks for the help.

    I've just bought a 15,4 mbp unibody;
i've read couples of post about fonts installation problems, mainly due to the nvidia geforce 9400-9600 and bootcamp version.
For myself, i can't install .pfm font on my windows, where i get a message "not a valid font file", even though i was able to install the exact same font on another pc, and on two other mbp, bought a year ago.
Any help or shared concern will be appreciated,

  • Fonts not showing up in Illustrator CS2 on Windows 7

So here's what's happening. Since I installed Illustrator CS2 on a new computer running Windows 7 (please no lectures on how I should switch to Mac), certain fonts aren't showing up. They're installed and work fine in other programs, including Photoshop. And I have bought and installed new fonts that work fine. But when I tried to find, for example, Frutiger, which I use a lot, it didn't show up on the font list. BUT when I open a file that contains Frutiger, it reads the font fine and then it shows up in the list (only the versions that were in the document, not the entire family). But the next time I open Illustrator it's no longer there.
Has anyone run across this problem before? I had no problems on Windows XP, so I'm guessing it's Windows 7 issue, but I thought I'd try here anyway.
    Thanks.

It's probably an issue with conflicting font names and font grouping information as in how it is embedded in the file vs. the local font names. I don't think you can fix this easily, but you should definitely investigate, whether you are using the latest version of the fonts in question...

  • Pdb font problem on windows xp

Hello! I am new here. I have hindi pfb (and pfm) font. There are hundres of files typed using this font in page maker 5 on windows 98 operating system. Now the windows 98 is upgraded to windows xp. The fonts are again installed using atm. Using these fonts, I can easily type in microft word. I have also installed both pagemaker 5 and page maker 7. The problem is that  in none of these page maker versions I am able to type in that pfb (and pfm) font. I am ready to upgrade to adobe indesign, but the real trouble is about those hundreds of files typed in that font. These files get open but they show unnecessary gaps for zero width charcters such as "aa ki matra, oo ki matra etc.".  I think thank problem is with windows xp because those fonts got properly displayed in windows 98. On another machine having windows 98, the files get proper displayed in page maker 5. I will be really thankful for the help that I may get.

IIRC correctly you don't need ATM with WinXP as it supports Opentype, Truetype and Type1 fonts natively.
And in general you need to have full administrator rights to install fonts.
There's probably threads about this somewhere, either in this PM section or the Type forum.
If your font is installed correctly, it will display and print just fine with InDesign (though for the latest version of InDesign, I suspect you'll need a newer version of windows.)

The quickest solution might be to try to reinstall followed by another uninstall, or to use the Windows Install Cleanup Utility, (although Microsoft has removed it from their support site with the following disclaimer).
    Notice
This article previously contained a link to the Windows Installer Cleanup utility (MSICUU2.exe). If you were directed to this article to solve a problem installing a product other than Microsoft Office, please contact your software manufacturer for installation support on the product.
While the Windows Installer Cleanup utility resolved some installation problems, it sometimes damaged other components installed on the computer. Because of this, the tool has been removed from the Microsoft Download Center.
Nonetheless, here is an active link and basic instructions:
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    1.     To use the Windows CleanUp utility, follow these steps:
    a.     Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Install Clean Up.
    b.     Select the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
    c.     Click OK, and then click Exit.
If these suggestions do not help, then perhaps a case should be opended with TAC and they could assist with gathering the installer log files.

  • Font name length limitation...

    Hello all,
I have a serious problem related with .PFB font files. Is there any relation between font name length; I checked and if font name length is more than 30 characters I am getting an error that "the requested file C:\....\....Pfm,C:\....\....Pfb was not a valid font file". Although I am using the same way to install all fonts.
Please help me and give me any solution. Please let me know if there any limitation with windows XP, or its a limitation of Type 1 fonts.
Thanks in advance and pardon my English.
    Thanks........

I believe the answer is "both" for practical purposes. Although, my recollection would have been that the limit was 31 characters, not 30.

  • Crashes after trying to change font in score window

    Hi,
I'm having a weird problem with Logic 7.1 in my powerbook 1.33. When trying to change a font in score edit window, Logic crashes imediatly. It happens in the "Text Styles" window as well. When you click in a font name, it's gone!
Any ideas? Running in the latest Tiger with 1Gb RAM. Also, is it a problem to keep Logic 6.4 installed on the same machine?
    Thanks everybody!

Do you use another machine for that task?
as a matter of fact i do, although my G4 will run classic. and LP7 is os x only, you need an older version of logic that runs in OS 9. logic won't run in classic mode.
to save your file, i suggest taking it to someone with os 9 and an old version of logic. in fact, if you emailed it to me i could do it. someone on this forum suggested buying an older machine with USB (or getting a USB card) just for such emergencies. i have retained my old G3 powerbook with logic 5.5. it has a PCMCIA USB card on it so i can put in my XSkey.
having to do this is stupid though. let's see, to fix this logic score display bug, we have to buy an old computer that can boot up in classic, open and resave the corrupted song in that. what a ridiculous work around.
when I open older socres created on my previous mac-printer setup, it's all messy, dynamics, articulations and text (not to mention the wrong fonts).
yet another reason we need some logic score updating action. the reason your score looks funny will be due to the fact that you probably resized your score using page setup - ie using your printer driver. the correct way to do this is by opening the instrument set display box and resizing there.
fonts not being displayed will be down to whatever fonts you have available in your system, so if you do not have the fonts available then they cannot be displayed. another reason your display will look strange, particularly in terms of where your articulations and dynamics are placed in the score may have to do with how you inserted them in the first place. in logic, you have to be very careful to insert your dynamics, articulations etc on the correct stave (it will be highlighted blue when you select the object) and in the correct midi position. check to see if they are in your messy score by selecting the object (ie dynamic articulation or whatever) and opening the event editor. is it where it should be?
another trick if the display is completely screwed in logic 7 is to cut an object at a barline. (though obviously not in the middle of a note). this forces logic to recalculate the score display.
my advice if you want to have soft copies of previous scores is to create pdf's of them. i almost never print directly from logic (unless i am in a terrible rush), i create pdf's first. that way you won't run in to the display problem. you can do this easily in os 9 if you have laserwirter 8 selected in chooser. you can then save to file and choose acrobat pdf.
let me know if you want me to rescue your logic song that won't open.

  • Fonts isn't showing up in Font Book but does in some apps

I have a particular font that I use in a number of applications - Peignot. In fact it shows up in Text Edit, Mail, and Business Card Composer, to name a few. But it doesn't appear in Font Book, and more to the point, it doesn't show up in Word or any of the Adobe applications. It's clearly in my user Fonts folder and has been for months. I've only noticed the problem because I've tried to use this font in Illustrator. Can anyone tell me how this font can be present for some apps but not others? And is obviously installed but doesn't show up in Font Book?

I just needed to reinstall a fresh version
