  • Hosting Your iWeb Site From Your Mac

If you don't have a .Mac account or you don't want to pay a monthly fee to host your new website you created with iWeb, you can use OS X's built-in Apache Web server. To accomplish this, follow the steps in the link below.

I was able to get this to work, using the same configuration you mention. The way I did it was to set up the IP address on my LAN using fixed static addresses, and to have the router "forward" the http packets to the Mac running Apache. In Network system preferences panel, you also need to set the DNS servers address to the address of the router on the LAN. In order to reduce hackers trying to break in, I don't use the standard port 80 for my address, but use some other 4-digit port (e.g., 8182), so my website address ends up looking like www.whatever:8182. Instead of "no-IP.com" I used the free dynamic name service from http://www.dyndns.com/. I also put the web content on a firewire disk, which requires a little editing of the httpd.conf file. This was another security precaution. Anyhow, its been working great -- not a single problem. Also, Weblock is great shareware that lets you assign login IDs on the web folders.

  • Is there a way to have files available for download on your iweb site?

Ok here's the question. If I wanted a image file or music file to be available for download on your iweb site.....would that be possible?
Kind of like when you go to a website and sometimes it has a link you can press to download a file. If you click the file then the "save as" or "download" window opens depending on your browser.
Is something like this available on an iweb site? If so then how would you create something like that? Any help would be appreciated.

    audiophiler,
There are two ways to link to files with iWeb. The approach that iWebFaq outlines results in iWeb making a copy of the file in question and storing it in the domain.sites file. Then, when it publishes your website, it puts a copy of the file in the right place in the folders it publishes. Visitors to your site then download that copy.
You are correct that you can put things in your public folder of your iDisk for download. But the process of linking to those files is different. When you set up the link in iWeb (using the inspector) you need to choose "external link" and provide the url of the file in question.
For more background on the differences between these approaches, and the advantages of each, see this thread. That thread also has some good links for sorting out what the url of the files in your public (and other) folders of your iDisk are.

  • Hosting your IWeb site

    Hi,
I want to change my local IWeb site and upload it to a server host....(For example: "http://www.machighway.com") Will I be able to upload files just as they are locally and drop them unto the server? Otherwise, who offers the most affordable monthly plans for hosting an IWeb Site

What's affordable depends on how much you want to spend and where you live.
Here's one for starters. Its free and if you like it you can pay for it and get a free domainname :
    www.000webhost.com
I use several of these webhosts, besides MobileMe.
Or do your own webhosting. Either on your own computer or on an external one.
Since I was in need of backup anyway I bought a Synology DS211 NAS with two 3TB Seagate harddisks.
    bit.ly/pDg4Ka
    bit.ly/oFa9j5
It has all the bells and whistles to run your own show. I just need to learn how to bell and whistle, lots of UNIX inside.
Today I got the mailserver up and running with my own domainname, so now you can reach me too.
The coming months I start migrating my website from MMe. But first I must get aquainted with some httpd.config directives I want to use on my current computer before I configure the NAS.
    So lots of fun ahead.
    Here are the pictures, BTW

  • How do you hyperlink a rollover to another page from within your iweb site?

Ive made a bunch of rollovers for my iweb navigation bar. If youve created a rollover you know you have to link the images to a image hosting site. here as you would just normally drag and drop a image from your desk top. Because of the way iweb works, if you are using images from a image hosting sit, you can no longer adjust the characteristics of the images i.e. colors, size, and in this case the hyperlink. More specifically you cant change the hyperlink to a page within the iweb site.
So the problem im trying to figure out is how to link the rollover to a page within my iweb site.
now you can actually change the hyperlink of the rollover. however you must do this by adjusting the html within the snippet of the rollover. The problem i found is that iweb doesnt creat sub domains for each page. a entire iweb site with multible pages uses only one domain which is the homepage. so i cant just type a subdomain of another page into the snippet hyperlink because the subdomain doesnt exist.
here is the link to my site. youll notice i did figure out a work around with the "contact us" button but its a huge pain in the butt. i had to create a new domain and a new site then attach the referal index.html to that new domain. todo this for every single button is very difficult.
    http://springgardenranch.tk
so i guess the bigger question is, is there a easier way to do this?
perhaps if there was a way to create a subdomains like springgardenranch.tk/contactus withing iweb for each page. but i dont even know if thats possible.
    thanks for you help.

Because of the way iweb works, if you are using images from a image hosting sit, you can no longer adjust the characteristics of the images i.e. colors, size, and in this case the hyperlink.
Then use  your own images. Then you can create them the way you want.
    Here's how I do it :
    http://cafenoir.atspace.com/Hover/
And here's the menu in an iWeb page :
    http://cafenoir.atspace.com/HNBF/
And here you can learn how to do it. Follow the links to the How-To pages.
    http://cafenoir.atspace.com/
You may have to learn HTML. CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, DOM and how iweb creates its webpages.

  • Hosting your iWeb site with a third party

Where is the best place to host my iWeb site so that I can get it indexed by the various search engines? Apparently, .Mac blocks spiders and therefore I cannot get my site to come in search results. Obviously, my primary goal is to have my site prominent on google. I would like to find a host that would submit my sites for me if possible. Thanks.

.Mac doesn't block spiders. You have to get rid of the iWeb standard navigation and build your own.
Create a sitemap and upload it to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites.
The URL for your sitemap is ...
    http://web.mac.com/username/sitemap.xml
... and the URL you submit to Google is ...
    http://web.mac.com/username/
Rage Sitemap Automator will create the map, upload it and enter it into the four major search engines..
    http://www.ragesw.com/products/googlesitemap.html
A more basic, and cheaper, version is iMap...
    http://guimkie.com/projects/imap/
Or you can use the freeware Carto and do all the hard work yourself....

  • Have your iWeb site critiqued.

If anyone would like to have their iWeb site critiqued post it here. All graphic designers and professionals alike are encouraged to critique as well. I have been working as a graphic designer for over 8 years, and am working towards my masters degree in graphic design. I have strong knowledge about typography and layout, and can offer constructive criticisms to help improve the look of your site. Anyone who is interested is welcome to post.

    Juejuegirl:
I think you have some nice things going on here. What I like the most is the "Blog" page. I think the background here and the fonts fit your theme more so than the other pages.
An important thing in design is to be consistent, especially when designing a multiple page layout. This will bring the site together as a whole. Having the navigation menu change for each page can be a bit confusing and can "throw off" the viewer.
Maybe finding a page you really like (my vote is for the blog page) and matching the other pages to this style would bring the whole site together.
Also, you don't want to use too many different type faces. I would use the same font and style for subheadings throughout (say Garamond semibold 14 pt), and then for the paragraph text below a contrasting font (say Arial or Verdana 10 pt.) This will embed in the viewers head and they will be able to navigate through the site easily.
For example on the "who are we" page you have the subheading "who lives downtown", and then paragraph type below it. This looks nice, but then immediatly below it the next subheading "featured product" and its paragraph type changes. Make these the same throughout and your site will become more cohesive.
If you stick with the first page, bring up the blog button so the nav menu is on one line. Its hanging by itself right now, and needs to be with its buddies.
Hope this is useful. Nice job.

  • Can you put Keywords in your iWeb site?

I'd like to add some keywords to my iWeb site so that search engines can find me faster. I have looked this up in Apple help and a search for keywords and meta tags comes up with nothing. How can I put some keywords in?

Show us your gaming setup: 2014 Edition
Some of you may already be aware of this beamoth of a thread which is nearly 7 years old now! So I thought it was time to have an official thread on the go to show off your awesome gaming setups!
It's quite easy to embed your pictures into the forums, from the reply screen, simply press the insert/edit image button and upload it to the forum! (1000k max). You can embed photos larger than this if you are hosting from an external site.
We had some epic setups in the old thread so I'm hugely excited to see your updated gaming havens!

  • Photos not showing up when iweb site published

Once the website has been updated to iweb 08 the photos on pages do not show up.
Has anyone found a solution to this?

I am having the same problem and I built my site from iWeb 2.02 from the start. The curious thing is that the pictures show up on my G4 but not on my old G3 which runs OS X 10.3.9. Most of my friends are getting the pictures too. Could it be a computer problem instead of an iWeb publishing problem!?!

  • How to PROMOTE your iWeb site...............

    iWeb is soooooooo user friendly.
I'm new to creating a web site and I
was wondering, how you go about
    promoting my website on search
engines such as Yahoo and Google.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers

Here are some more details on how to get your site listed more/better/faster:
    1. Go to http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl and submit your URL. Submit both yourdomain.com and http://web.mac.com/yourusername
FYI, if you use forwarding on yourdomain.com, Google will be happier/more likely to index your mac.com addresses. No way around this.
    2. Submit your site (either URL) to http://www.iwebusersites.com
    3. Get other people you know to post links to your site, and you should include your url when you post in bulletin boards/forums, etc. The more places your links are, the more likely Google is to find you.
    4. Add Meta tags to your pages.
    Get MassReplaceIt
    http://www.hexmonkeysoftware.com
Here's a page on how to use it:
    http://web.mac.com/will.englefield/iWeb/WillG4PB/MRI.html
    Tell it to search for
    </head>
    Replace with
    <meta name="description" content="insert description of your site"><meta name="keywords" content="keywords for your site separated by commas"></head>
    5. This is a big one: Check the text on your page - perhaps it is being converted to images. Make sure you use a web safe font, put text in text boxes, not shape boxes, and don't add effects (shadows, etc) to the text or text boxes. This way Google has something to search on your pages.
    6. Create a sitemap and submit it to Google
    https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/docs/en/about.html
    in conjunction with this
    http://www.sitemapdoc.com/Default.aspx
There are instructions for doing this all over the forum if you do a search.
    7. Wait patiently. It takes time

  • My Firefox screen at the top does not look like what you show at your help site, so I can't customize or learn how to do things

I am running Windows 7 Professional and am not adept at using the Windows platform. Firefox on my computer does not look the way it is shown at specific "Help" topic pages, so I can't get the help needed. Three examples: 1. How to click on a link so it opens in a new tab; 2. How to customize the options; 3. How to get rid of the "Ask" web site window.

On Windows, you can switch between a classic menu bar and a compact menu opened with an orange button with the word Firefox.
You can switch between these using one of these methods:
    * right-click a blank area of the tab bar and turn Menu Bar on or off
    * View menu > Toolbars > Menu Bar
    * orange Firefox button > Options triangle > Menu Bar
    Does that help?
To get to the tab preferences, you can do this:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Tabs
To remove the Ask toolbar, you can go here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
You might still have to do a little cleanup after removing an extension, if it changed your home page, new tab page, search provider, etc. Please describe any remaining problems in more detail.
    Hope this helps.
