Showing "Backup" in System Info on Internal SSD
I was in System Info looking at how much SSD space I have left in my New MacBook Pro. When I looked about a week ago, it showed 0GB in Backups. Today it said there was 14GB of Backups on the Internal SSD. Can anyone tell me what this is and if and how I can get rid of it?

I seem to kill HD's every two years...the last two i've installed were WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200rpm 3.5" drives. The speed gains over stock drives have been remarkable. I don't blame the drives for the failures, my machines are up and running 16 hours a day, every day, year round. They die from 'mileage' so to speak...i assume...there's no viral acvtivity or questionable downloads to gunk things up...just lots of work.
I have my third new drive ready to install in my intel based iMac...but i've had a thought...I want to install a SSD in my iMac for the speed gain (and recent price drops)...for standard storage i want to use this new WD Caviar Black 1TB in an external drive bay and connect via firewire 800 for storing everything except the OS and my most commonly used software...am i crazy? will the firewire 800 external drive negate the speed gained with an internal SSD??
I have four iMacs in my office, and one at home. I buy second hand and install new drives and boost memory. I'm going to do this on my 'home' machine...if it works out well i want to upgrade the other three this way...but first i need to know if i'm just dreaming, or will it really make a difference? or even possible??
Thanks!

OSX ver. 10.8The SSD gives great bootup and Application launch speed. I think it also speeds up the video rendering a bit, I do all that on the SSD and then move the finished project to the external drives. As far as the speed for the external drives they are quick enough for viewing video and the file transfer rate is good. I had initially put the SSD into an external cradle (FW800) and the system was faster than on the internal drive. I only got a 1.5GBs SATA drive, perhaps yours could benefit from the 3GBs. I know the 6GBs would be too fast and costs a lot more, even the MacPros need special hookups to make use of the 6GBs.

anybody able to help me with my setup for apple tv. i've followed the directions in the guide and my tv doesn't seem to register in part. it's weird because my tv system info identifies the apple tv but the screen never went black and it doesn't show anything, too, my imac doesn't seem to register the apple tv unit either
I would try connecting it to another tv to see if it works there if it does
then likely your tv can't handle the default resolution and you should lower it on the other tv
if not then you should connect it by usb to the computer and use itunes to restore it's firmware -
Upgraded kernel info not showing in System info page
Hi all,
We have upgraded our EP 7.0 from SP11 to SP 15 with kernel 146, all the components are showing up fine after the upgrade means SP level SP15 , but kernel still showing the same old kernel info in the system info page.
I have checked from the OS it's 146 there, i have checked at the VA also it's also showing old kernel info.
I have tried changing the mode of SDM to integrade and systemcomponents to active still same result.
Please suggest ..
Thanks,
Subhash.GHi,
SDM deals only with Java components, so it has nothing to do with the Kernel.
To update the Kernel
1. Stop the system
2. Extract SAPEXE.SAR & SAPEXEDB.SAR in the directory pointed by DIR_CT_RUN profile parameter, this is usually SYS/exe/[n]uc/<platform>
3. Start the system
Make sure you extract the correct archives for your OS and DB.
Different instances of your system might user different Kernels - UNICODE/NONUNICODE or different OS.
Make sure to update all Kernels to same patch level.
Normally the system is setup to replicate Kernel binaries from the central file system (DIR_CT_RUN) to instance local directory (DIR_EXECUTABLE) via sapcpe. This happens during system startup (you can find sapcpe in START profiles). The instance starts the executables from DIR_EXECUTABLE (<instance>/exe) directory.
Best regards,
Petar

After the original Fujitsu 160gb hd died in my MacBook Pro (model A1226), I was advised at the Mac store to upgrade to a SSD. I installed the crucial m4 256gb internal SSD and powered on MacBook Pro from the Snow Leopard install disk so I could use disk utility to erase and reformat the new SSD.
The problem is the SSD is not showing up in disk utility. I have opened the computer twice and checked cable connections and still no luck. I have powered off computer and let sit for a while and tried again. I check compatability on crucial site before ordering SSD so I don't know what the problem is. Bad disk? You were given bad advice.
Return/Sell the SSD and buy a 7,200 RPM hard drive instead, it should work fine and a more of a match for your older machine.
Your Mac doesn't have the faster SATA connections for a SSD also 10.6 isn't equipped for SSD's only hard drives, your basically putting a Ferrari engine in a Yugo, it can't handle it.
The 7,200 RPM drive will give you the performance and more drive space than a SSD anyway.
Follow these instructions when you erase and install 10.6, it will give the best results.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6 -
Time Machine not showing backups
Time Machine stopped backing up earlier this month and I have done numerous things to get backups again. Yesterday after upgrading memory on my iMac, not as a fix for Time Machine, I restarted Time Machine and it appeared to be backing up just fine. This morning when I looked at Time Machine preferences it does not display oldest or latest backup and when I open disk it shows 2015-01-24-083208.inProgress and if you look inside package it appears to have backups all the way back to when I started Time Machine back up. I have reformatted the drive during the process of trying to get backups working again and run disk utility and drive checks out fine. When it does a backup it shows progress bar and when complete tells when next backup is. I browsed through the folders in the 2015-01-24-083208.inProgress package and they do appear to be complete backups.

Macbook Pro Retina doesn't see internal SSD drive
Hi Guys,
I have a problem with my Macbook Pro Retina 13(late 2012). Yesterday I've done clean install of Yosemite. Everything worked fine, and I wanted to restore my files using Time Machine. So I restarted it (command +R), plugged in my extertal hard drive, turned on TM restore option and chose my SSD drive as a place to install. Mac asked me to enter password for the SSD (default filevault2 in yosemite), I entered the password, system accepted it and then something went wrong. System told me to restart mac and try again. I restarted it, and did like previous but this time, my mac stopped to see his internal SSD drive. System was asking where to install yosemite form Time Machine and there were no drive to choose. I turned on disc utility, and I see my SSD drive there but I can't erase it, or unlock (picture in appendage). I can only verify disc and it shows that drive is fine. I've tried to install Yosemite on my external drive and boot from there,to unlock SSD in settings(I've chose my Ex. drive as a place to install Yosemite) but it didn't work. I even tried internet recovery (command+option+R) but I didn't help, SSD drive was still useless.
I think my SSD is still locked, but I don't know how to unlock it now. I don't need to use Time Machine anymore(I have my files in other drive too). It can be clean install but please, can somebody tell me what to do? I have exams this week and really need a computer :<Start your mac up by holding the alt key. That is boot from function.
If its empty then you might have a hard drive issue. Due to your hard drive being picked up but not the partition on the drive. This will most probably be a OS X reinstall.
Erase the drive and reinstall the OS X or run a recovery mode.
Good luck -
I have an external hard drive from my time capsule that stopped working on me. I am attempting to access the data with a hard drive reader on my MAC. I am able to see the drive in disk utility and under system info USB. But I am unable to access the data and it does not show on the desktop when connected.
Ok if disk utility was able to verify the drive I doubt there is any problem.. are you trying to open a TM backup??
You need to mount the sparsebundle then check the actual info inside the bundle.
Don't use disk warrior.. if the disk has verified then unless you deliberately deleted files there is nothing that is going to do.
Pondini has a lot of stuff about getting access to the sparsebundle.
http://pondini.org/TM/17.html
But if you have copied info to the TC that is now gone.. and the disk is ok.. I am not sure.. the TC will not have deleted the files itself. -
How can I transfer my data from my internal hard drive to my internal ssd on my macbook pro?
A few days ago, I replaced my optical drive with an internal ssd. Now I want to transfer my operating programs from my hard drive to my new ssd. How do I have to do that?
I can only tell you that my system has the SSD in the optical slot. I know others don't recommend that, but it's worked fine for me. As for copying everything over, why not just use Carbon Copy Cloner? I don't see why you need Time Machine backups. I'm assuming your SSD is the same size or larger than your HD, or at least large enough to accomodate all your data. Then if you decide to swap the drives around in the bays, you can do that as well.

System info discrepancy with IPhoto
Hi Terence,
Two quick questions: I either rebuilt or restored my iphoto library a couple of months ago due to inability to read and received the error: may be in use by another application. This occured on a 2006 macbook pro that i upgraded to lion and also iphoto 11/9.3.
I dont remember if I rebuilt or restored (couple months gone by); however, it worked! So no issue there. Just wanted to give you a history as I believe it is related to my current inquiry.
Question 1: Further exploration shows that I have 114Gb when I do "Get Info" on the pictures folder in my home folder. Omnidisk sweep also says I have 115Gb in pictures. However, when I lookup storage in the system information it says that I only have 70Gb in photos. Why the discrepancy? Did I double my library size by doing the above rebuild/restore? Should I not worry about this as system info only shows 70Gb vs. 114Gb in pictures folder? I also trashed the ipod photo cache (read this in previous thread from you) and saw this will be no biggie as it will be rebuilt. This got me back 14Gb, but did nothing for the above discrepancy.
Question #2: since I did the above, i've noticed an enormous increase in HD usage in "other" category, I do not believe this was related to the above; however, since following you and some threads I turned off time machine and therefore solved the local backup hogging up HD problem. Since doing both things above, got at least 7Gb back-great, but believe I can still get more as I still have 45Gb of "other" in my system info.
Are there still mobile time machine backups looming in the background or do I have some picures from restore/rebuild? if so what is best way to delete this extra data w/out harming my photos?
Thanks so much for your time
waveoneWith respect, neither of these questions are about iPhoto. They're about the Finder, and what it reports
However, when I lookup storage in the system information it says that I only have 70Gb in photos.
Where exactly are you looking that up? -
Can't partition my internal SSD drive
Hello,
After some trouble with mail drop, my mac has frozen, i forced the restart but it could not boot on my drive anymore.
I started in recovery mode and tried to repair with the last backup but the drive could not be unmounted.
I unmounted the drive with diskutil in command line using the force option.
Since then, I can't partition/erase my internal SSD drive anymore, i have tried all format but i always get this error (in french) : "Le balayage des données du volume afin d'empêcher de futures recherches accidentelles a échoué".
How can i erase and partition this drive in order to reinstall Yosemite ?
Thanks in advance
My configuration :
MacBook Pro 13 pouces
Processeur 2,7GHz Intel Core i7
OS X Yosemite 10.10.3Anyway Right click on the Network connection
Did that -- I get a window with three tabs, General, Exceptions, Advanced. Exceptions has a long list, which includes Bonjour, which is checked. But I don't see any list of Bonjour Advertised Services and nothing about CD.DVD anywhere I've looked.
Next possible step??? (I really appreciate all the effort you're putting into this!)
, iirc, then shoe UpnP.Bonjour stuff, opens the Firewall & supposedly shows "Advertised" services, then you'd Mount the Mavs CD.DVD if it works! -
Thunderbolt with Pegasus R4 heavily slows down boot performance of internal SSD
After connecting a Promise Pegasus R4 Raid with a Thunderbolt cable, my Mac Book Pro 2011 (Snow Leopard) needs about 60(!) seconds longer to boot from the internal SSD. Without the Raid connected, my MacBook Pro needs about 20 seconds to boot. When I press the power button, the display of the MBP is more than 20 seconds black before the bootsequece starts. I shorly can hear the CD drive beeing checked after pressing the power button - as usual. The RAID is the only periphal connected via Thunderbolt. No softwareupdates are available. Raid and SSD are pretty fast after the system booted. Is this behavior normal?
Mrvoeg,
I appreciate you posting that information. Here is what I got with my setup.

"Ghost" System folder on internal hard disk.
I have a mid-2010 iMac with a 120 SSD (used for the operating system, primary applications and documents) and a 1 TB internal hard disk for seldom-used applications, documents and movies. Although everything works reasonably well, the Hard Disk keeps creating a System folder on the internal Hard Disk with a Library folder, which in turn holds some Caches. If I delete this System folder on the Hard Disk by way of Cocktail, the computer simply creates it again. Is this normal?
Hey Allan...
I assure you, these audio related cards are very much
completely real and assuredly non-mythical!
They are:
A MOTU PCI-424 card, which is a proprietary card for running multitrack MOTU audio interfaces.
A Universal Audio UAD-1 card, which is a piggy-backing DSP card that runs audio plug-ins.
This is the main computer in a recording studio that I
run. My initial plan was to have two separate internal
drives that are identical, so that if one drive were to
die, I could immediately reboot from the other system
and have almost no down time.
I was asking about this on an audio related board and
someone made the point that having multiple instances
of system software might be causing a problem.
As a workaround, I think instead I will load an extra
internal SATA drive and just keep it in a box, waiting
where I can just pop it in if the system drive fails.
I've tried everything and the PCI cards don't show up
under system "A", if the drive with system "B" is also
mounted. I don't know if there's any tricky workaround
to this... mounting drives in a different order maybe?
I'm not heavily tech-savvy, so I think the easiest option
is just having a separate replacement drive rather than
using one of the drives that is always mounted.
Let me know if you think of anything though...
Best,
Fred -
I'm running PS CS6 on a 13" Retina Macbook Pro with a 128 GB internal SSD. I've pretty much filled it up, and am buying two external hard drives to migrate my old files off (with a backup). Having freed up some hard drive space, I'm thinking I might partition off some hard drive space for a scratch disk. I've read that it's better to use an internal SSD than an external drive (USB 3.0), so my question is-- how much space should I give it? I've seen recommendations all across the board on the Internet from about 2 GB to several hundred GB. Realistically, I do need space on my hard drive for operating system and stuff, so I can't give it the whole thing. I'm also considering partitioning off some of my new external hard drive.
Sooooo... Advice?Having scratch point to an SSD is a great idea for keeping Photoshop responsive, but you really don't have enough room to do it. Photoshop eats up scratch space like popcorn.
Also, I'd STRONGLY suggest against doing a reconfiguration that will potentially run your system disk low on free space. The OS HATES to run out of space.
I just saw that a quite decent 512 GB SSD (Crucial MX100) is now available for roughly US $200. That blew me away. It might be a good time to think about upgrading, assuming that's possible with a MacBook Pro.

!0.5.8 How do I copy the 'system' form one internal Hard drive to an other (BY CD Packed up) I have tried but it will no show 'live' system folder - do and how can I bless it ? Thank you
Carbon Copy Cloner will allow you to de-select directory trees, so you could use it to copy over everything EXCEPT the /Users directory tree.
Mac OS X is NOT just the System Folder. If you do not copy over the rest of Mac OS X, it will not boot. So better to exclude Users and take everything else, then it is to try and pick and choose.
The other approach is to install a New Mac OS X, and then copy over the stuff you want from the home folder(s) and reinstall any apps you want.
