Showing Photos While Video Clips Continue to Play

I am trying to fade in photos while a video clip and its sound continue playing. (Although the video clip continues to play, it's obscured by the photo.)
Currently when I place a photo into the storyboard the video clips stop playing, the photo shows, and then the video starts again.
Does anyone know how photos can appear in my movie without interrupting the playing of the video and its audio?
Thanks!

Hi bcas and welcome!
You want to superimpose a still photo on a moving video? No problem!
But you need to buy Quicktime Pro. Here is how to do it (don't worry about the references to video within video, it works the same for stills - you will soon get the hang of it!
Organise the video clips and/or stills that you want to superimpose on to your main video clip, by having these in separate, individual iMovie projects (no matter how small). It helps if these are in the exact length/time you want later.
Now start with the clip in your iMovie project on to which you want to superimpose one of more smaller video clips or stills. Lets call it Main Clip. Export this (share) to Quicktime Pro in DV (full quality). make sure it has the same aspect as before (Quicktime tends to default to 4:3. If you want 16:9, read on).
In Quicktime, with this project open, select File ~ Open File. Select the iMovie file (in your movies folder) of the first clip/still you want superimposed. This will open in its own QT window. Select Edit ~ copy. If it is a movie clip then select all ~ copy (or you will only get one frame!). Switch back to the Main Clip window, and click in the scroll bar where you want the extra clip/still to appear. Choose Edit ~ Add to Movie.
You can repeat this as many times as you like, if you want to build a 'Video Wall', i.e. have several superimposed clips/stills on the same Main Clip.
Do not worry that the new clip overlaps or covers up the Main Clip, at this stage.
Choose Window ~ Show Movie Properties. The Properties Dialogue appears.
You will see a list of video (and audio) tracks. Track one will be the Main Clip, track 2 your new added (superimposed) clip. Click track 2, then click visual settings. From the Scaled Size pop-op menu, choose percent. Then type 50 into the first box. If Preserve Aspect Ratio is turned on you won't need to type 50 into the second box. You have made the pasted footage appear at one quarter its original size. The inset is now hugging the top-left corner of the Main Clip. If you want, you can type numbers into the Offset Boxes to shove it away from that corner (there are 72 pixels to the inch).
If your original Main Clip was required in 16:9, unclick (de-select) Preserve Aspect Ratio, and type in 1920 in the first box, and 1080 in the second, in Video Track 1. This will not affect video track 2, but if that is also wanred in 16:9 repeat for that track.
You can superimpose, 3, 4, or more such 'overlaps' on the same clip, and spend a happy afternoon tapping away for each track in the Offset Boxes until you have got them all in the right place! You can even overlap them, if you can remember (or note down - hire a secretary to take notes) which track you want on top etc.
Save the completed QT file. Import the completed file into a new iMovie project. Import this into the original iMovie project, substituting the old clip you copied to QT as Main Clip for the new fancy clip you have made.
Have fun!

  • Show spinner while video is ready to play

    I'm displaying video in s:VideoPlayer. I want add some effects like showing spinner till video is ready for play.

    Extend Videoplayer, add a new skinpart (your spinner), add a new state , "waiting" or "buffering" or something and add logic to put the component in "waiting" state. When your video is available switch back to "playing".

  • "Show Hide Elements" movie Clips continue to play

    I've put a bunch of AP Div tags on a page with video links,
    once one begins to play it continues after another thumnail is
    clicked. So, a user can soon be bombarded with audio from 8
    different clips playing all at once, because once one begins
    playing, it seems to not "hide" or cease to play as it should.
    The URL in question is found here, but you have to click the
    link for more demo reel stuff to load the page I'm trying to work
    on:
    http://www.knappmediaproductions.com/portfolio.htm
    Remember, click where on the page it says: "More varied
    examples of Demo work seen here" to open the page I'm dealing with.
    Is there code of some kind to shut all those clips down when
    the layer they are on is hiding?

    I understand that you can remove one parent instead of many
    children in this way, which is good from an efficiency standpoint.
    Beyond that, I was ideally looking for a way to basically "freeze"
    the action on Frame A and return to it. I assume that, even with a
    parent-child scenario, I would still need to loop through all of
    the children and save their states (because just checking the
    parent attributes isn't going to get at this information). I was
    just asking if there was any easier way. It would be nice to be
    able to go to another frame - maybe on another level - and then
    come back to Frame A and pick up where I left off - just hopeful
    thinking, I guess.

  • Help!! video clips won't play in slide show

    I have a 40 minute Aperture slide show presentation that contains a few video clips (time-lapse videos, etc). It played well last summer. However, now that I am about to present the show tomorrow I can't get the video clips in the show to play. They have all been located and connected to the original files. If I double click on individual video clips they will play in the browser window but they won't play in my slide show. Any ideas? I'm in panic mode!

    What happened since last yoear? Have you reinstalled the system at some point? Maybe you had last year additional video codecs installed? Flip4Mac, Perian?
    Do your videos play in QuickTime Player, when your export them to the DeskTop?
    Are your videos iPhone videos? In that case you may have a problem with
    Also, if you recently run a cleaner utility that cleared the caches, you now may have a missing  com.apple.xpchelper.cache in /System/Library/Caches .
    This has been known to cause videos from stopping to play. This file will only be recreated by reinstalling MacOS X, but you can force its recreation by a Terminal command.  See:

    I've been using iMovie for a while now to make movies out of mostly travel photos and video clips.  I try to vary the time for the photos from 1-4 sec., although most of them are 1-2 seconds so as to keep it short.  A friend of mine who saw my most recent product said that this is too short.  Any ideas out there?

    I apologize for my confusion on your question.  I find that depending on the principal of each photo and my target audience to determine the time frame for each photo.  It seems most people get impatient with viewing one photo for more than 1-2 seconds if the photo is not complex.
    If there are several things that interests the viewers in any one image, they want to look at it a second or two longer.  If the movie of images is a training aid, the images may need to be more than 3 seconds.  For intro's, or a trailer for a training movie, no longer than 1-2 seconds.
    That was a long answer to say, generally speaking, I find 3 seconds to be an average time length.

  • "Show Photo Settings", my clip is black

    De Javous all over agan. I am using HD 6.03, and have been for quite a while. Back a couple of years ago there was a software flaw the was fixed, now it has come back to haunt me.
    When i have a clip I want to modify, I go into "Show Photo Settings", my clip is black, why is this happining again?
    paul

    Hello, Paul,
    Yes, my workflow is similar to yours. I think the main thing is to do the photos first and the music last, as you are doing.
    I put in my videos first, cropping out the parts I know I won't need. Then I put in the photos. I know that I will eventually have to crop the video clips again to get what I want with the photos, but initially I just put the photos in the correct order. Then I 'fix' the photos to be the right size, duration, etc.
    Next I adjust/crop the video clips and move the photos to their more correct place. If I want the audio to play from the video clip, but over a photo instead of the audio, I make that correction. I do that by either extracting the audio and pasting over the photo, or using WireTap to record the audio from the video clip and just laying the audio clip under the photo and deleting the video clip. I lock all this type of audio clip to its corresponding photo.
    Then I evaluate where I want/need Ken Burns effects on my photos and add that. Sometimes I use Photo-to-Movie for a panning of a large group where I want to title the people.
    Next I do titles and transitions.
    Last I add music.
    Sometimes if the movie has a lot of short audio clips or many video clips and/or photos, I find that the playback becomes slow or stilted or the audio continues and the video lags.
    If I have done all the editing I need to on the clips, I then export the movie as Full-Quality QuickTime. This of course results in a movie that is one long single clip, but it plays audio and video correctly. It can still be edited, but it is a bit tricky to do so, since the audio and video tracks are now one.
    If my movie is long, I usually add chapter markers to the original iMovie, just to know where they should be.
    I then put the new QuickTime movie into a new iMovie project and use that as the movie I burn to DVD. I add music to it, add my chapter markers and then I am ready to use it in my iDVD project. Having placed chapter markers in the original iMovie makes it much easier to create those markers in the QT iMovie. You can open both iMovies at the same time and use the time codes for each marker.
    Most of my movies are of family videos and photos for the year. Each one is nearly two hours. Some years require several DVDs, depending on the activities for that time; some years everything fits onto one DVD. I even went back to the earliest family photos we had.....from the 1890s...and have made DVDs of each side of the family as a history for our kids and grandkids.
    Hope this is helpful!
    PS. Matti's comment about deleting the trash is absolutely correct....I forgot to add that in my first reply

  • IMovie11 - MARKING PHOTOS AND VIDEO CLIPS USED IN PROJECTS

    After endless research, I have finally figured out how to mark the photos and video clips I have in my project so that I don't duplicate them in my project. It's actually easy once you know how to do it.
    1. Create your new project (Movie)
    2. Create your event with the photos and videos you want to use from iPhoto. Name your event same as your Project to make it easier to find the event for that project. The work flow will be > Event > iPhoto Library  > Albums > Select the entire Album or individual items.
    iMovie will not mark any photo or video that is not stored in iPhoto, so make sure you have your Photos and Video stored there. You can always delete any media later you don't want to keep. I found it easiest to organize the media I will be using in a project into an Album, and give it a name relating  to your Project so you know where they're at, and you don't have to sort through your entire iPhoto collection to find them.
    3. Now you have your Photos / Video in your event.
    * As you ad the media to your project, an ORANGE line will appear on the media indicating you used it in the project you currently have open.
    * If you see a PURPLE line on any of them, that indicates they are used in a different project you have created. >>> See Attachment ...
    Remember that you will only see these mark lines in events.

    If you don't want iDVD to show its theme or menu then go into the Map mode in iDVD and drqg the slideshow containing the photos and video clips into the blue Auto Play bin at the left.
    Click to view full size
    When inserted into a DVD player it will begin playing immediatey.  However, when findished it will fall back to the menu so use the menu which would look best for the situation.  They can be modified by droppiing image files into the menu settings bin to give it a different background.
    Make sure your photos and video clips end up  in the slideshow together:
    Click to view full size

  • Trying to distinguish photo from video clip ?

    Hi,
    I have just started using A3. I have noticed that it is difficult to distinguish between photos and video clips in A3. Only from the metadata badges you can see a very small icon in the bottom right hand corner.
    Is there a better way to easily see a which is a video clip ?
    The only way I can see is to sort by file size.
    Any inputs ?

    There should be a default "Videos" Smart Album in your Projects and Albums shown on the Library tab of the Inspector. That will show you all or your videos.
    As you've noticed, video are flagged with a small badge which you can show in either the Viewer or the Browser. (The shortcut for showing metadata overlays is "u" in the Browser and "y" in the Viewer.) You could apply a colored label to all your movies if you would like them to stand out more in the Browser. In the "Videos" Smart Album, select all, then "Metadata>>Label>>ChooseColor".
    There are, of course, any other number of ways to do similar things. Filter on +"File Type = Video"+. Put all your videos in Projects in a separate Folder. Make Albums of videos. Apply the keyword "Video" to all videos. Append something like +" video"+ to the filenames of all videos, and then just use the text search.
    HTH.

  • Video audio continues to play in the background

    I have created a close button that should stop the video from playing, thus closing out of the video and returning to the main menu. But the video audio continues to play in the background.
    Does anyone know how I can get the video to pause/stop playing at the same time as it returns to the main menu and after clicking on the close button?
    This is what I have to play the video:
    var videoStage = sym.$("videoPlayStage");
    videoStage.html('<video id="myvideo" width= "640" height= "360" src = "composition2/myvideo.mp4" poster="images/poster" type= "video/mp4" controls = "controls"></video>');
    sym.$("videoPlayStage").show();
    close button
    I have a trigger:
    "off"
    sym.$("#D39").pause();
    It is not working.

    Here is the code that I put on my close button to make the video pause when closed ("Nat_League_Back" is the place on the timeline that I want to direct the user to when the video is closed):
    sym.play("Nat_League_Back");
    // Pause a video track
    sym.$("BaseballVideo")[0].pause();

  • Replacing a photo or video clip

    Hello,
    What is the easiest way of replacing a photo or video clip with a different photo or video clip on the timeline without messing up the overall sequence or length of the video?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
    You can do a replace edit. Place the playhead at the start point of the clip you want to replace in timeline. Open the new clip in viewer (with this playhead at the in point or start point). Drag the new clip on the edit ovelay in canvas to the replace option. This process will work only and only if there is enough material in the new clip to cover the old one. The 3 edit points method can be used to do a more precise job. See the manual.

  • Video clips won't play back after capture

    I am a long-time user of Premiere Elements, currently using version 9.0. I am capturing video clips from the same videocamera that I've used in previous versions of PE. My video clips won't play back after I capture them. The clip is in my "media" area, but when I try to play it back, the audio plays but the picture remains frozen on the starting image. What is happening?

    It is a Sony Handycam DCR-HC28, mini DV, using a firewire connection.
    Operating System is Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 3, system specs are SATA 2 RAID 1 with dual 1 TB hard drives. 4 GB RAM. As far as how fast my processor is, I looked on my invoice and it says, "Intel Core2 processor Q6600 (2.4 Ghz, 1066 FSB) with Quad Core technology and 8 MB cache, 4 GB DDR2 SDRAM at 800 MHz.
    I defragmented my hard drive before beginning and have 779 GB or 83 percent free space on hard drive.
    I have not placed my video clips on the timeline yet so don't know if there is a red line on top, indicating it hasn't been rendered. I merely wanted to play back my clip to set "in" and "out" points. This has never happened before in my long history of using Premiere Elements. Would prefer not to have to go back to PE 8, as that was a disaster.

    Depends on how do you want to do it. If you store your backups with iCloud - try in your iPad's preferences. If you keep your stuff on your computer - plug your iPad in and launch iTunes, the photos should be there.
