Showing text in PDF in Preview

Hello,
I’m currently working with an application that at certain points generates pdf’s to show reports. It works fine on windows, but when I try to open them in the preview on the Mac OS X Mavericks, it shows an empty document. I can open it, select the lines and when I copy/paste to notepad I see the text, but the pdf file itself is empty. I figured it would be because of the fonts that are not recognized, so my question is: how are fonts differently used by preview as opposed to Windows and can someone here give me advice on generating the pdf in such a way that the text is visible on a mac without embedding all the fonts in the pdf. The fonts used are the standards, so Times New Roman, Arial, Arial Black and verdana for instance.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your suggestions.
The PDF works fine when opening in Acrobat Reader, both before and after watching it being empty in preview. When I’ve opened the PDF in preview it shows blank, but I can select the lines which hold the text it should have (and during selection it shows the lines, but not the text on those lines; could be compared to have a lot of spaces in the document). When I then copy the selection and go into ‘notes’ and paste there, the text that was supposed to show is pasted into it without trouble. In the inspector the file size of 53KB is given.

  • Inserting text into PDFs in Preview.

When editing a PDF in preview, I create a text box where I want to put text but i can only have one font or, more importantly, one font style (bold, italics etc) within that text box. How can i make just several words italics??

Apparently, the only way I have found to mix font styles in Preview is to create two text boxes and manually align them for appearance. You can change font color from the Preview edit sub-toolbar or the font dialog box.

  • Editing Text in PDFs with Preview

    Hello,
I have a certain peice of information I'd like to delete from a PDF file. I can't crop it since it's in the middle of the document. I just want to delete this string of text from a scanned PDF file. Is this possible in Preview? Thanks!

You can do a "screen Capture" which creates a .png file, and insert it where you want it, or just send this piece to whoever.
Screen Capture: Open the file you want, with the part you want to capture showing.
Then hold down Shift-Command-4 and let go. You get a crosshairs target type mouse pointer. Move it around the area you want to capture. When you close the box around the part your interested in, you will hear a Camera Clicking sound and a file will show up on your desk top called "Picutre1.png". That file can be printed or put back into Preview for further uses.

  • Text added PDF via Preview disappears

I am using Preview to take notes on PDF's for med school. After I save it to iCloud or whatever and open them later the text box get smaller and does not show the text. I have to go to Inspector to see where my notes are so I can fix them. What is going on???

I am with you 100%. This did NOT used to work for me but I decided to give it a shot since this person was saying it worked for them. It works now and I'm happy but they must have fixed this in a recent update.

  • How to add note to underlined text for pdf within Preview

Sometimes I can right-click in underlined or highlighted text in Preview and get an option "add note" so that there's a text box without an balloon icon (like the one you get by pressing control+N). But it is so tricky that I have to try several times before the option appears. Is there any easy way to do it?

Welcome to Apple Community forums, Tom.
Go to View menu >Show annotations toolbar > click on the text box at the bottom and you should get a type cursor when you click on the area outside or within the document or photo. Then type. Does this not happen consistently?

  • Finding text in a PDF using preview has stopped working (correctly)

Finding text in a PDF using preview has stopped working (correctly).
When I search for certain words in a PDF using preview, it correctly finds all the pages in the document with that word.  However, it no longer highlights the word being searched for.  I have looked through the various settings and cannot figure out how to turn this back on.
    Thanks.

4Shared worked, but having to register to retrieve files from there is a nuisance.
The problem is that you use special graphic state operators inside text objects which is not allowed:

Have a look at the PDF specification ISO 32000-1:2008 (e.g. at http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/PDF32000_2008.pdf). Table 51 shows that q, Q, and cm are special graphics state operators, and Figure 9 illustrates that these operators, therefore, are not allowed in text objects, i.e. between BT and ET.

  • Preview - Cannot copy and paste text from pdf

    Hi there ...
I usually have no problem copying and pasting text from a pdf using Preview ...
However .. I recently received a pdf ... and there is no way it will highlight the text to copy ...
The older pdf's are not affected ...
I did a get info on the pdf ... it's not locked ... and it was made by Adobe In Design CS2
I tried opening it with Adobe Reader 9 ...... but still no luck
IN my search .. I noticed one other person had the same problem ... but he didn't get any responses..
    Thanks for any info ....

If it's behind something else then you can open it in Illustrator and select the specific object you want. If it's rasterized then no.
If this is a document you can share with the world then I'm sure we could tell you what specifically is going on if you posted it here.

  • Can't Copy Text From PDF Within Gmail Preview

    Hi,
If I click on a pdf attachment while inside gmail, I get the expected preview window of that PDF. However, I can't copy text from it. If I press Command-C, it just makes a beeping noise letting me know nothing is being copied. If I select text and right-click, there's no 'copy' option. Also, in the top toolbar, Copy is greyed out in the Edit menu. However, if I just hold down Command-C for a couple seconds the text will copy anyways (while hearing a dozen audible beeps). I can copy text without issue using Firefox from the same PDF attachment preview inside Gmail.
    Thanks for any help.
    Yosemite 10.10.1
    Safari Version 8.0 (10600.1.25.1)

Having same issue as well. I've had this problem pre-Yosemite and it seems to be Safari related. Copy to clipboard in Gmail preview works fine in Chrome & Firefox, just not Safari. As you indicated if you hold ctrl-c long enough it will eventually copy, just forces you to listen to the series of annoying bongs.
Also there's no copy to clipboard in the context menu as illustrated below:
    http://i.imgur.com/adyyJO4.png
Pretty annoying really, I'm not about to download a dozen attached PDFs to copy to clipboard, so now I'm sitting in the Delta lounge with my laptop bonging away as I wait for Safari to copy to clipboard and everyone looks at me like I'm a moron.
NOTE: No I do not have acrobat or any other software loaded besides vanilla Safari. This has gone on on my MBP, Mac Pro and now this brand new MBP I got Monday as a company upgrade, it literally has nothing installed on it at the moment.

  • Preview show all attachment (pdf) as locked

just i want to ask about why (preview.app) show all attachment (pdf) as locked and when you want to unlocked press in the top of file to open it , why there is some step to do this ,not like before in snow leopard. and how i install old preview to work on it in side Mac lion ox????

I have Brother Control Center3 and if I click the "Configuration" button in Control Center and then click on the type of scan (e.g., image, file, ocr, etc) there is a window where I can select the file type of the output, the application that opens with the document after the scan and the ability to adjust a number of other settings.  I suspect that this was similar in earlier versions but if not you can likely download a later version from the Brother support site.

  • Difference b/w scanning TEXT vs. IMAGES (or printing to pdf in PREVIEW)?

I have my scanner set to 300 dpi Color TIFF.
Is this giving me something different when I scan a text document or when I scan a series of images? Do these then get /converted/ in some way that I am not understanding when I print to pdf in PREVIEW? I run File > Print > Pulldown to pdf and SaveAs pdf. Does this do something to the images that it doesn't do to the text or vice-versa?
I have pdf's that are from 100 MB to 900 MB and I am trying to downsize them with this set of "quartz filters" (whatever that is).
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1292868?start=0&tstart=0
But doing this on a text pdf seems to work great and doing it on a pdf of scans of images (scanned with the same settings) doesn't reduce the file size?! I have a 33 page pdf of images and it is 66 GB in size and my email pipe is choking on it.
    TIA

    Hi Jason.
Interesting about the jpg's not degrading much upon compression. For some reason I have moved to TIFF due to recommendations on quality (?) and to png due to recommendations on bandwidth (?).
    Also thanks for 150 px.
For me it is a little hard to switch back and forth between image settings and b + w settings but I will start keeping an eye on line art settings for b + w. Thanks again.
Is it possible anyone knows of a way to downsample a color pdf of images that are TIFF and 300 dpi or to downsample a black and white pdf that is in the same settings but is in Color Currently?
I'm running some quartz filter reduction routines on my largest pdf's (500 MB?!) and in some cases dropping it down to the 150 Average Compression is totally trashing these files. I can't understand what is going on or whether it is only doing it to the images and /why/ it is doing this to the images.
I mean, I'm getting ready to move these off my mac hard drive and onto a windows hard drive just to downsize them so I can move along...
    Thanks.

  • Exported PDF's from FormsCentral show text until submitted to 3rd party application

    Hello,
I'm running into an issue when trying to export a group of PDF forms that were created in FormsCentral they do show text when opened with Adobe Reader.  However if another program attempts to read the PDF it does not show the text input by end users into the form.  If I print the PDF file to PDF and then attempt to index it with different software the submitted text is usable.  I'd like to find a way to not have another step in the process to print to PDF for an existing PDF.  I'm not sure if the text is showing up as a background layer that isn't visible to other applications or if it is potentially the font which is Trebuchet MS.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hello Gen,
We are importing the forms into Banner Document Managment System.  Once they are saved as a PDF every part of the PDF is visible to the document except what the user has input.  Then when it is saved and searched for in Banner Document Management System the text no longer shows up when the PDF is opened.  They will show up if I print to PDF using CutePDF Writer and then upload into Banner Document Management System.  Banner Document Managment System is used to host all of the school's documents when they are submitted.
    Thanks for your assistance!

  • Fonts not displaying properly in PDFs in Preview

When I open a PDF in Preview, fonts are either substituted, or the text doesn't display at all.
PDFs display properly in Adobe Acrobat, however.
I've tried deleting Preview's preferences, to no avail. Any clues?

This is a constant problem for us too (on our new Leopard only machines), any program that uses the OS to display PDFs will keep dropping type.
This means the finder, preview, keynote and mail applications. Our placed PDFs in keynote slides don't show type. In finder windows, the type in pdfs (the icon) is sporadic at best, in mail and entourage the type on pdfs in email is also sporadic. Preview itself is completely hot or miss. But open the same pdf in acrobat and viola, perfect.
Clearing the font caches and restarting is only a temporary fix.
This is an inexcusable bug that makes doing professional design work (the sole reason we have macs) extremely difficult. I wish we had not upgraded any of our computers.

  • Q. about the images that show in a file's preview

Can I change the image that shows in a file's Alias (is that the right term?) ? Let me tell you a bit more about what I mean... I have 2 aliases for 2 files in use at the mo' - 1 is a tiff, created and saved by Grab. At the moment the picture that shows on the file, unopened, on my desktop, is the generic image that shows a tiny photograph and the text "TIFF" underneath - it'd be cool if it were a tiny preview of the grabbed image instead.
Second, I dragged the file containing my camera owners manual to the file-and-folder part of the dock, on the right-hand end, thus creating an alias, I think. Again, the image showing on the alias on the dock is the generic pdf image - same as the tiff but with the text "pdf" instead of "tiff". If I go to the actual file, as opposed to the alias in the dock, and choose Get Info, the Preview is indeed the manual's cover. Again it'd be cool if the image showed a tiny version of the owners manual cover. - I 've got 2 pdf files next to each other on the dock, and it'd be cool to see which was which at a glance. If I open the respective files Info., the correct previews show in the Preview section, so why don't they show in the circumstances I describe above?
    Any ideas, folks?

The Dock does not show an icon preview, unless the file has an icon made for it.
For example, if you open the pdf in preview and do a screen capture, cmd-ctrl-shift-4, select the entire first page. You can then Get Info on the pdf in the finder and paste that picture into the icon of the file. When you drag it to the Dock, it will show with the picture as the icon.
In the Finder, under View Options, you can have it show icon previews. Not only can you see the first page of a pdf, you can actually thumb through the pages. However, if you've set an icon, that will be shown as the preview without the ability to thumb through.
