Shrinking QuickTime dimensions

Hi!
I have a series of QT files that are currently compressed at QT7 H.264 LAN Streaming setting. I am trying to make the file dimensions smaller at 480X360 instead of 640X480. When I created a new setting, however, the file size of each clip ended several times bigger than the LAN streaming version. Is there a way that i can "shrink" the dimensions and the file size at the same time?
Thank you.

Hi:
Duplicate the QT7 H.264 LAN Streaming and save with a new name. Now you customize it; go to the Geometry tab and change the size to what you want.
Hope it helps!

  • Problems Sharing Movie to QuickTime

    Camera: Panasonic PV-GS500
    iMovie: 6.0.3 (267.2)
In the past, I've successfully made movies with this camera and iMovie 6. I've also successfully converted them to QuickTime and also transferred them to VHS using a Canopus ADVC 110.
I used iMovie to create a new movie this week and attempted to create a QuickTime file, but am having problems. I'm using Share -> QuickTime, H.264 compression, 24 fps, Best Quality, 720 x 480.
The first encoding took about 8 hours for the 6 GB file. The first result was totally unacceptable due to interlace jaggies.
I turned on "Deinterlace Source Video" and did a second encoding. This resolved the interlace jaggies, but now the QuickTime film runs about four seconds and pauses for about 200 msec, runs 4 sec, pauses 0.2, runs, pauses, runs, pauses, etc. I haven't previously experienced this problem.
One last note. I'm running low on internal disk space, so I've got the source file and the QT file on an external Seagate hard drive connected via FireWire (I think 800, but may be 400). Internal drive has only 1 GB left after making the movie (3.3 GB).
Ideas on how to get back to making clean QT Movies from my source?

First major issue is the amount of free HD space on the internal. You should spend some time freeing up as much space as possible.
You could move large chunks of data to the external (it must be properly formatted) to free space. iPhoto Library, iTunes music and even your iMovie Projects could be stored and use on/from it. Test the functionality of all that software after you've moved them before deleting the original sources on your internal drive.
Second issue require us to know how the QuickTime file will be used. Each different usage requires a different export process.
Your source is DV Stream (PAL or NTSC as you don't state your location) and your export should match the dimensions and frame rate exactly. There is no DV setting that uses 24fps and the QuickTime dimensions of an NTSC DV file should be 640X480 (not 720X480).

  • How to compress/adjust imported videos in Final Cut Pro and iMovie?

Left: what the video looks like when played in iPhoto or Quicktime (Dimensions: 960 x 720, Codecs: AAC, H.264) .mov
Right:  what the video looks like when played in iMovie or Final Cut Pro.
    SOS

the left shot is 4:3 (960/720)
    the right shot is a 16:9 project (1920/1080 or 1280/720) with a stretched-to-fit 4.3 video.
If you want an un-stretched project, set it to 4:3 manually when you create a New project, or use the transform-tool and resize the video - which will add bars l/r or chops-off t/b of the video...
or use the Spatial Confirm settings in the Inspector ...

  • Big unwanted images from Photoshop to Illustaror

    OSX 10.3.9 PS & ILL CS2
This may well be an Illustrator problem so I have posted it in that forum also. Images manipulated in PS and usually in JPG format will be a huge size when 'placed' into a an Illustrator document. Huge physical size not memory, an example would be an original 100x100mm JPG placed into Illustrator A4 (297x210mm) document completely covering the document plus the extended area, sometimes it can be 10 times the size of the original. This happens infrequently but is irritating none the less. Help would be appreciated.

Nick - No, what I mean is that Illustrator looks at the actual number of pixels in width and height in the picture and places it at 72 ppi on the Illustrator page if the originating info about resolution in the image itself is 72 ppi.
As the Illustrator page in itself doesn't have a ppi as it basically is a vector application (which as far as the vectors goes prints in accordance with the printer ppi used for output) the jpg image comes in as is depending on how it was saved in the originating application/camera or whatever.
InDesign on the other hand has used some different alogritms to handle the dimensions of the placed jpgs/bitmaps depending on which version of InDesign we are talking about (differnet in CS, CS2 and CS3) and does some shrinking of dimensions of the image when placing (check actual ppi in Info for a selected placed image in ID for what it will print as).
In AICS3 check ppi in the Toolbar for the placed image. The higher ppi in the image, the smaller the image is in dimensions, the lower the ppi, the larger the image is in dimensions.
Digital photos makes it even more complicated as it seems to depend on the camera and how it handles dimensions and pixels dimensions to state its resolution. I know my 3 digital cameras (an old Fuji FinePix, an Olympus and a Canon G9) all handle it differently.
Sorry, I cannot explain it better than that. Keep an eye in the Illustrator (CS3) toolbar for actual ppi when placing a bitmap image. Scale down to whatever print-resolution you desire to get bests print result and to be able to compare between images. Or don't place in Illustrator - place in InDesign which will give you a much better idea of how it will actually print.

  • PSD to PDF results in HUGE filesize

I'm making a brochure sized 8.625" x 11.125" (the extra .125" is bleed) at 300 dpi. The PSD file is 10.3MB (just looking at one side, since the problem's with both), but when I try to save it as a PDF, it gives me an error saying that the resulting file is more than 2GB!
Also, if I save it as a JPEG (figured I might try to convert to PDF from that), the image dimensions jump to 35.417" x 45.833" (not including bleed). Shrinking the dimensions leaves me with a low resolution though.
I'm not a PS pro, but I'd like to know if shrinking it, then just increasing it to 300dpi would cause problems. Alternatively, what else could solve the problem?
    Thanks in advance

I just finished converting a PSD to Photoshop PDF in
    Photoshop CS4.
First thing to do with the PSD is to see what the Document Size (Print size) is showing up as.
From the Image menu > Image size dialog.
The size is given in inches, and the resolution in dpi.  It should be 8.625" x 11.125" at 300 ppi
If not, uncheck "Resample image" so you can adjust the printed size only.
After doing this, go to the File menu, choose Save As... and Photoshop PDF as the format.
when the PDF dialog comes up,choose "High Quality Print" or "Press Quality" Preset from the topmost drop down menu in the dialog.
The converted PDF should open in Photoshop and be the same Print Size as the PSD file.
This should work unless there is something going on I'm not aware of.

  • How to add Borders

How do I add a border to my pages?
In the templates that are available to use with Pages there is one that is titled "Johnson Newsletter." I would like to know how to make the border that is around the red section as well as how to get the border that surrounds that first page of the newsletter.
I know how to add the picture frame that is available by going to Graphics and then Stroke. But, I can't find any other style options.

The border around the red box is created by using a white dashed line.
You can see the construction in:
    +Inspector > Objects (the square-circle icon) > Stroke > Line+
The double rule surrounding the page is 2 boxes nested inside each other the inside one having a lighter shade.
You can't edit it because it is locked, to unlock it and see how it works:
    +Menu > Arange > Unlock+ then go to +Inspector > Objects > Stroke > Line+ again.
To get the neat parallel effect, create the outer box and copy and paste it over itself, then shrink the dimensions on all sides equally and change its color.
Another way to get parallel lines is to make 2 equal size boxes on top of each other, with the bottom one having a much thicker rule and the top one having a white or different colored rule but no fill color. The top box will cover up the middle of the bottom box's rule making it look like a parallel line. You can make more boxes stacked on top of each other to create more parallel effects and experiment with different styles of rules, dashed, dotted etc.

  • How can I scale just one dimension of a pic? I need to shrink the width only, to fit the frame.

HELP!  How can I shink only one dimension?  I need to shrink the width slightly to fit the frame; the program only allows scaling that is proportional, so when I shrink the width the heigh becomes too short.  Father Mike

I'd recommend using the rectangular marquee and the crop command. This will crop the image to an exact size without any resampling or distortion. Cropping without constraint can cause distortion...like giving someone a cone head.
Check the size of the image first by either looking in the Image<Resize<Image Size. Make a notation of the height since you don't want to change that in this case. (While you are there, change the resolution to the desired output...make notation of height after this step if you changed the resolution.)
Select the Rectangular Marquee tool. Change the setting in the options bar to "Fixed Size" and input the desired size. (Along with the numbers, specify in this box in what units you desire...px, in, etc.
Drag the marquee to the desired location. (As long as the marquee tool is selected, this selection box can be moved around).
Go up to the menu bar and select Edit<Crop.

  • How do I change Flash's Quicktime export dimensions?

    Hello all,
This is my first post in the Adobe forums, so I hope this is being posted in the right place. I recently upgraded from Flash CS3 to Creative Cloud and am now I'm confused about where an important feature I used is located. In Flash CS3, I would often go to Export > Export Movie, then choose "Quicktime", after which I could edit the render dimensions to scale up the vector content I'd created to a higher resolution. For instance, my document size might be 960 x 650 pixels, but I could then change the render dimensions to 1920 x 1080 and it would successfully scale the vector content to a higher resolution.
In Flash CS6, the render dimensions are not editable. You can, of course, click "Quicktime Settings..." and change the dimensions there, but this does not result in successful scaling of vector content. It appears to take the rendered low (original) resolution movie and then stretch it to the larger dimensions, resulting in pixelation.
Of course, for newer projects, I'm creating the documents at a higher resolution to begin with. But I have several older, fairly lengthy animation projects which I'd like to be able to scale up when I export. Can anyone tell me how to do this in Flash CS6?
    Thanks!
    Justin

And you're saying you adjusted this Quicktime export setting?
Have you created a new document at your desired size, set your older SWF to allow itself to scale and then exported that? (e.g. import SWF at one size then adjust width/height to the size of the document, then exported)?

  • Shrinking audio/Quicktime files in iWeb

I used the podcast template for my website. All my audio files were created in ProTools. The .wav files are often 40MB to 60MB. I have no problem playing the pieces on a Safari or Firefox browser on my iMac or MacBook -- but someone on a PC with perhaps a slower bandwidth told me she could only play ten seconds of every piece. I suspect the files are too large. Does anyone know a good way on a Mac to shrink a file size down? Or is the problem that Quicktime doesn't work on a lot of PC browsers?

The .wav format doesn't use any compression so the total file size could be very large.
Use something (even iTunes can convert) to shrink them down in size.
Mono would cut the file size in half. Mono plus halving the frequency (44100 becomes 22050 Hz) would cut it to one quarter size.
AAC or MP3 compression can also adjust the bit rate. Spoken word doesn't need a 128 kbits/sec rate. Your WAV source is probably 1411 kbits/sec. Cut it down to 64 and now it is 20 times smaller in file size.
No "Podcast" should be over 1MB per minute of file.

  • Quicktime Pro recording video - dimensions presets

It appears that the QT Pro presets for recording video (all two options) depend in part on what maching you're using it on -
On my G5, the videos recorded are 320 X 240, which is fine for my purposes... but on my Powerbook (with which I'll be doing the actual recording), the videos are 240 X 180, which is too small for my purposes.
Has anyone discovered a way to change these settings? Or to "fool" QT Pro into thinking it's on a different machine so that it will allow for larger dimensions?
Failing that - any suggestions for other software to record 3-4 hour meetings using an iSight and a Powerbook? (I've tried BTV, but can't get the file size to quality ratio anywhere near as good as QT Pro, and BTV seems to create huge swap files or something that make several hours of recording impossible).
    G5 Dual 2Ghz; 12 AlBook; iPod 3rd Gen   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thanks, QuickTimeKirk... I've got SnapzPro and gave it a shot, having it record the QT Pro record window (without having QT record, of course)... but one of the things I like about using QT Pro itself is that it appears to do the capture and the compression all at once -- i.e. no post-processing needed. This is ideal because the plan is to copy the movie to a USB thumb drive for the client at the end of the session; waiting for a 3 hour video to save and convert/compress won't work (hence something like iVezeen, while good, won't do).
Anyway, I have managed to change the dimensions via the .plist file that applies to my Powerbook. The next thing I want to try to change (if possible) is the framerate - it doesn't really need to be as high as it is for our purposes, and would cut down size (and processing cpu usage?) if I could reduce it to 15 or 20fps. I can't find that setting anywhere in the .plist files though.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Is there a way to shrink the size of a quicktime file? NO SOUND?

Whenever I try to share the item, there's no sound. Whenever I try export, same result Does anyone know the settings to export from quicktime pro that will preserve the sound? I've tried this on two different computers. I have a 16.9 meg file and I want to reduce it so I can upload it to the web. Please help. Thanks.

If it's a muxed MPEG, you need to use MPEG Streamclip to export it; no setting in QuickTime Pro will preserve the sound. Click here for more information.

  • How to shrink a quicktime file of 93.3 gig with handbrake

Thanks for the info. I did try to use Handbrake, but when u navigate to the source file, it says no valid title found, I wondered if this was because there was no suffix, tried MP2, and 4 and MOV, no joy, offhand couldn't think of what other suffixes to try. version of handBrake in use is 0.9.1 any suggestions as to how I could get HandBrake to recognise the source file would be appreciated

Handbrake will quite happily provide conversion facilities: http://handbrake.fr/
I'd choose MP4 / H264 as the codecs / container, keeping the same resolution. a 2 hour movie for those dimensions at a bit rate of around 2000 shouldn't come in above 1GB (a huge reduction for you)

  • The Quicktime 10.1 viewer adds black borders

Since updating to Lion, the Quicktime viewer adds borders to my pre-existing videos. No matter how I re-size the window the borders remain on the sides of my portrait aspect ratio videos.  They played just fine (borderless) before upgrading, now the black borders cover other parts of my presentation.  Anyone know how to make them go away.  It's a shame that they would induce such an unelegant feature.  Using Quicktime 7 for the time being, just moving the videos to the bottom of the viewing area to eleminate the controls.  VLC player doesn't loop and won't allow me to drag for random sizing. Just gives me 1/2 full, double-sized, etc.

And what aspect ratio are "your" videos?  Landscape?
Aha! Now I see what you are getting at. Still doubt this is a deliberately "added feature" but do consider it to be a bug introduced in QT v10.1. In my opinion it is likely due to fractional aspect ratios and is a problem similar to QT 7 pixel dimension problem when width is <348 pixels. Problem may be due to the fact that portrait views are still embedded as 1280x720  files (aspect 1.78:1) even though they are being displayed as 720x1280 (aspect 1:0.56). Have not run tests to determin an exact "break point" for bug, but have observed that all mixed number apects seem to display properly. You will also observe that as QT X switches to "Full Screen" for these portrait views, that the pillaring shrinks and disappears. Would definitely sugguest others report this in QT X feedback to see if it can be fixed.

  • QuickTime Pro follow-up

I want to compress video and audio I shoot with Photo Booth so I can attach it in an email. What is the best format? Do I need QuickTime Pro? Will QuickTime Pro help?
    Thanks

You can indeed use QuickTime Pro. There's even a super easy feature that shrinks and compresses the video and audio and automatically sends the file to Apple's Mail and embeds it in an email message. I just used that to take an 8.7MB movie file, 720x540 with a stereo MP3 sound track, selected Share in the File menu, clicked the Email button, selected size Small, and it was reduced to 490KBs, 160x120, sound AAC Mono. Tiny thing. If you use some other email program, or want something a bit larger, you can choose Export, tinker with settings to get what you want. For instance, I chose MPEG-4, got 352x288 dimensions, mono AAC sound, and a file size of 1.3MBs (I have Perian installed as well as QT Pro). There's another Export option that makes a quite nice file, although you have to dig for it--you select Export for Web, select a folder, have it export for the iPhone, then go to the folder and retrieve the .m4v file. It is about 1/4 the size (in this case 2.1MBs), 480x360 with stereo sound and excellent quality.
In short, you can get what you want, how much effort you need depends on exactly what you want, everything from the extremely easy (a couple of mouse clicks), to options requiring more work and more technical knowledge.

  • File size in Quicktime

First off thanks to all that are infinitely wiser than I am,
I am a first time user with the whole IDvd/IMovie/Quicktime Pro applications and am trying to accomplish a specific task. I have imported movies from a Sony DV cam and am trying to compile all of the smaller clips into one comprehensive clip.
The problem that I am encountering is that whenever the clips are opened in Quicktime they drastically shrink in size as compared to when viewed in either IMovie or IDvd.
How do I get the clips to be larger than the 120*90 that they are in Quicktime?
    Thanks again,
    Mike

I don't have iMovie 7 so I'm not sure about the structure.
It sounds like you are opening "thumbnail" versions of your DV files and not the real source. DV Stream is 720X480.
You should export from iMovie to full quality QuickTime to get those dimensions or use expert settings to get different dimensions.
