Shuffle 1stGen + Vista = :(

I just got a new Dell w/ *Windows Vista*, and I'm having major technical issues connecting my 1st Gen ipod Shuffle with Windows Vista. I used the 'itunes + ipod' compact disk included with the Shuffle, installation was fine except for 1 error message "+must close ipod Service... to continue installation+". Itunes installed properly, however, when I choose "*ipod Updater*" to Restore/Update, I get an error message "+Invalid iPod Service Version+." I DL'ed the most recent version of "ipod updater", and as I understand, ipod Updater is not compatible with Vista.
Vista does not seem recognize the device whatsoever.
Anyone know of upcoming 'ipod updater' versions compatible with Vista?

Suggestion: DOWNLOAD current iTunes version that's compatible with Vista.

  • A problem with my ipod shuffle and vista

    Hello all,
was wondering if anyone could offer some ideas on this. My flat mate just moved and I was using his mac for my ipod shuffle. I have just bought a Dell with windows vista and have put itunes on it. When I put my ipod in the USB port, vista says it does not recognised it and my ipod does not show up in the source area of itunes. I have tried to reformat it but the recomended program is incompatible with vista (it says only it works for XP).Is there any other way to reformat my ipod for vista? or is there a vista program available somewhere else.
    many thanks Kim

    Hi there.
I have similar problem with my ipod nano.
I recently bought a new PC with Vista, and for some strange reason, initially my ipod was recognised as I was able to transfer purchased music from my ipod to my itunes.
However now, a week or so later, every time I connect my ipod in the dock, it says "USB Device Not Recognised".
I have tried to restore my ipod software, but it wont let me do that, saying that it has a fault and needs to be replaced!
I initially thought it might be an ipod problem, but the store say it works fine, and restored (and wiped!) my ipod but it still doesnt work!
I connected a friend's ipod and the same thing happened.
So although I can listen to music in my itunes I cannot synchronise my ipod... what am I supposed to do?!
Its very frustrating... does anyone know the solution please please please!

  • Moving 2nd gen shuffle to Vista machine

What is the best way of moving a shuffle (2nd gen) from an xp machine to a Vista machine.
The restore option has not worked for me.
It asked to restore and I thought that happened.
But then when I put music on it, it appears to put it on, but when I disconnect it, it flashes as if there is no music.
    Is no longer plays.
    Any suggestions?
Can you reformat it? Is that advised?

Well, I was able to restore. Must appears to be
copied to the shuffle and songs play in intunes from
    the shuffle,
When connected to iTunes, music is NOT playable "from the shuffle"... you're just playing from iTunes library.
but the shuffle itself doesn't see any
music and when i explore the shuffle with Windows
Explorer as a portable device I see an itunes folder
and a music folder. There is nothing in the music
folder and the itunes folder does have update
    preferences, library files.
Very weird. The music does seem to be on the shuffle
based on the hard disk size, but does not show up?
    Any suggestiions appreciated.

IF you have NO problems/issues with your Shuffle, you don't need to update... apparently 1.1.5 has solved a problem with playing recently released music purchased from the iTunes Music Store.

  • Vista won't synch

I am unable to synch my son's shuffle with his iTunes library - which we previously could do with older PC running XP2.
    Background
New Dell machine with Vista, iTunes is installed (latest available version). Ported all songs from older machine via thumb drive and ordered some new ones via iTunes - all are showing in iTunes library on new PC.
Can see the iPod in iTunes, can also see the Shuffle in Vista's My Computer.
But when try to synch, it puts nothing on the Shuffle. It shows a synch happening, but nothing gets synch'd.
Help on this? If this duplicates other posts, sorry.

Play one or more of the songs from the old PC in iTunes and then see if you can load them on shuffle... it may be an authorization issue. Otherwise, take a closer look at the songs you transferred, there meay be a format/encoding/bitrate mismatch. (File>Get Info> Summary)

i also have the same exact problem and i was told by some apple person to take the ipod back to where i bought it and have them fix it which i'll be doin this week but other than that i think that apple needs to make a version of itunes compativle for vista
Actually they do. The latest version of iTunes is Vista compatible.
A lot of people have had problems with the iPod Shuffle and Vista. It is not an iPod problem, but rather a problem with Vista recognizing some flash based drives (of which the Nano and Shuffle are examples).
A couple of solutions to the Vista problem I have seen are as follows:
    1) The first solution is that Vista sometimes does not look for drivers in the correct place. When the wizard asks you to provide a location for the drivers type in C:\WINDOWS\System32 and see if it properly locates and detects the iPod and loads the drivers.
    2) Have a look in the hardware device list inside Control Pane. You may see you iPod listed (it should appear under the other devices heading) with a yellow triangle next to it. If it appears here then right click it select properties. Next click update device driver. Do not do the automatic find, rather click "I will choose the device from a list." Click on "storage device." With any luck VISTA now finds a USB mass storage device and install it properly.

  • Ipod won't play songs

Okay, i've recently had to restore my ipod, which went along just fine. After all that was done, I started to put songs onto my Ipod from my purchased / podcast section; and then tried to eject it, in which a following error came up saying "cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application". So, I pull it from the port anyways to see if the songs are still on the Ipod; in which i get the Green/orange/green/orange/green/orange sequence (No songs on ipod). I put it back onto the Dock, and my Ipod says that all the songs are on it. And this time i can safely eject it, yet i still get the light sequence of no songs?
The Ipod is updated to the most recent update, and everything syncs up well with it; i am completely lost as of what to do as this point, so any help would be appreciated.

    Marc Wecker,
If your Windows-based PC shows songs, but the iPod
doesn't seem to have songs, it is most often this
issue that has been acknowledge by Microsoft. The
kbase article below also links to Microsoft's kbase
article on it. The Apple kbase article also has a
    suggested work around:

This did not solve it for me ever, any over thoughts overwise apple are gonna have to think of a fix look how many people have this problem !

  • SOLUTION: Windows Vista + iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen

My original question on this topic is closed, but I finally fixed the problem and wanted to share.
The problem was: Windows Vista Basic desktop machine and iTunes would recognize a Video iPod, but not recognize an iPod second generation Shuffle
The symptom: Vista showed an unknown USB device and kept searching for drivers, but never could find an appropriate driver. Some posts here and there suggested a power level problem on the USB ports.
The solution: the original USB 2.0 ports on this computer are all driven directly off of the motherboard. I purchased a $20 PCI USB card and installed it in the computer. I plugged the iPod shuffle into the new PCI card, and everything works fine now.
    HTH

And since you have a laptop, a new PCI card does no good. Another solution I saw around the web was to use a powered external USB 2.0 hub. You might try that.

  • Windows vista, Ipod shuffle 4th gen.  Computer cannot find device driver software for ipod.

After several hours trying the troubleshooting options provided by the apple support site, I have come to what I think is the issue here.  My girlfriend recently got an ipod shuffle and when plugging it into her computer the dialog pops up saying it is installing device driver software for the ipod.  Eventually it asks me to insert the CD that came with the ipod.  No CD came with the ipod, so I click the option that says "I do not have my cd".  Then it gives me the option of searching automatically or manually for the driver software.  The automatic way can't find it.  Doing it manually, with the help of the troubleshooting page, didn't work either.  google search can't seem to help me on this one.  Also, I tried plugging the ipod into my computer (not hers) and it worked fine, it was able to install the device driver software on its own.  Does anybody know the issue here?  My computer has windows 7, and hers has vista.  Hers is Serice Pack 1.  When I tried installing service pack 2 it wouldnt work.  I don't know if that is the issue though.  I have tried just about everything, I think the issue is finding the device driver software.  When I do a google search nothing comes up, so I have no idea what to do at this point.  Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Well its surprising to know that! But even  have an ipod shuffle 3rd gen n dint face any problem like that. FYI no cd comes with the ipod jus take ur ipod to an apple exoert n he will solve ur problem .

  • IPod Shuffle Error (-48) : Windows Vista

Hoping someone can help with my predicament here:
I have Windows Vista Ultimate and the most recent version of iTunes. I bought the shuffle new about 2-3 months ago. When I connect my shuffle it always gives me the error in the screenshot below and prompts me to format the device as well. It will also do this each time a song changes if I am listening to the songs on the iPod through iTunes. When transferring songs to the iPod it prompts me with these pop-ups for each song that is loaded.
I have tried to search for that error code and have not had any luck. Has anyone run into this issue before.
All software is up-to-date: Windows/iTunes/Shuffle Firmware
    Thanks for any feedback!
Here is a screenshot of the errors:

Hi, I would suggest you to try Temporarily changing the Time Zone setting and then Open the latest version of iTunes and Restore your iPod. After successfully restoring your iPod, change the Time Zone back to your normal setting.
    Hope this works.

  • IPod Shuffle (1st Gen) is no longer seen in iTunes or Windows (Vista)

I had it working flawlessly in Vista with iTunes then yesterday I plugged the shuffle in and Vista said it was an unidentified usb device. So iTunes no longer sees it and it doesn't even come up in Device Manager.
    Things I've done so far...
    1. Reset the device (several times now)
    2. Uninstalled iTunes and Apple Mobile Devise service and reinstalled current version.
The only response I get out of this iPod now is the orange charge light when I plug it in, even though the device is charged and plays fine. I've tried all USB ports as well and still Vista has no idea it is connected.
I tried it on my other XP Pro machine and it detects fine. iTunes recognizes it as well and asks to sync it so I know the issue is not the iPod Shuffle itself.
    Any ideas?

    Hi hmacross,
I tried one of the options in the link you provided, 'iPod not recognized when connected to Windows laptop over USB'. It didn't work but now my Shuffle is flashing orange as it does when it is charging on my XP machine. So at least we have power to it I think.
I still have do detection in Windows Explorer, Device Manager or iTunes however.
All the other options I have already tried.
    Still scratching my head lol.
Thanks for you help anyway. Got any other ideas?

  • Restoring iPod Shuffle using windows vista if the device is not showing on itunes?

    Hello fellow iPod users
I had this problem in the past, using different computers. Whenever I change the computer, this happens with my iPod... and the solution is always to restore it to factory default.
Currently my iPod shuffle first generation is showing on Windows (Computer), but not on iTunes. I am operating. I tried all the procedures on the support website (re installed itunes, quicktime and all other apple software, changed security software, plugged and unplugged the iPod, reinstalled the usb ports)... after I tried extra procedings such as restoring system and changing to another computer, but the problem seems to continue. When I turn on iPod, it flashes the green and yellow light.
When I plug another iPod on the computer, on the same USB port, iTunes recognizes it and it works perfectly.
So the problem seems to be the same that I had in the past, exactly the same.
    My question then is this:
I try to use the restore utilty provided on apple website, but it is not compatible with Windows Vista nor 7. The option given by Apple is to use iTunes to restore the device, but hey, it doesn´t show on the device list, so how can I restore it if it doesn´t show???
I already had this exact same problem and the solution was always the same, but this time I don´t have an Windows XP computer available...
I also had iTunes run a device connectivity diagnosis and it reported all positive results, including: iPod found and USB ports checked.

  • IPod shuffle 2nd Gen not appearing in Windows Vista

    Dear All:
I have a 2nd Gen shuffle that will not show up in iTunes or Windows on a Vista Home Basic machine. Vista finds an unrecognized USB device and cannot find a driver. The orange light on the shuffle blinks, and the Vista device manager keeps detecting an unknown USB device, but it goes no further. I am not receiving the "-50" error; the shuffle never shows up in either Vista or iTunes.
I have contacted Apple tech support and searched these forums with no results.
    I have also:
-Run a different iPod (30GB video) on the same Vista computer. The 30GB video iPod works fine.
-Run the iTunes diagnostics on the same Vista computer on both the 30GB video (30GB iPod works fine) and the shuffle (shuffle not detected).
-Reinstalled iTunes from scratch on the Vista computer (3 different times) as described in
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305042
    shuffle not detected.
-Restarted the iPod service on the Vista computer as suggested by
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
    shuffle not detected.
-Reset the shuffle and plugged back into the same Vista computer. shuffle not detected.
-Tested on a different USB port on the same Vista computer. shuffle not detected.
-Tested on a MacBook Pro in the same shuffle cradle. shuffle works fine.
-Tested on a Windows XP box in a different cradle. shuffle works fine.
-Searched the mother board manufacturer for updated Vista drivers. None available.
Is there another step that I am missing, or is iTunes, the iPod service, and Vista just not talking on this particular computer?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hey, I hear ya and can sympathize. I have the same
issue. The difference is that my computer can "see"
    my ipod but it refuses to show up in itunes itself;
therefore, I can't put anything on the ipod (from the
computer) and vice-versa. Apple support is clueless.
This is very frustrating to say the least. Itunes
keeps telling me that my ipod is synced to a
"different" computer, which isn't true. It's the
same computer. The difference is that when I first
got the 'pod and used it with this computer (and
everything worked fine), I was running XP. I
installed Vista and after that, all the problems
started. If I ever get this resolved, believe me,
    I'll post something here.
I'm guessing that somehow, itunes "sees" what
computer it's hooked to by "looking" at something in
the OS. Change the OS and it "thinks" it's seeing a
    "different" computer.
    Try reformatting it.
