Shuffle always starts at same song

Why is it that my wifes shuffle (1st generation) always starts with the same song even though it is set to shuffle mode? It is driving her crazy that every time she turns it on to listen the shuffle starts with the same exact song & then plays them in the same predictable order rather than truly shuffling the songs each time she turns it on. Any advice? It be greatly appreciated & will help her sanity.

Have her press PLAY three times quickly (within 1 second) that should get her back to the beginning of the playlist IF the switch is actually on play-in-order instead of actually on "shuffle", otherwise it should re-randomize...

  • Shuffle always starts at same song when I turn it on (1st gen)

My Shuffle always starts at same song when I turn it on, even if I have it set to the shuffle setting. In other words, everytime I press play on my shuffle, the same song starts as the lprevious time I started the shuffle.
Is there a way to change that?

I haven't tried restoring it yet. I thought there
might be some trick or button combination to reset
    that.
    Nope.

  • Always plays the same song

When I want to listen to one of my play list (on shuffle or not) it always plays the same song over and over and does not go to the next song in the list.
I tried re-initiating my ITouch but it has not solved the problem. I also downloadeded the 3.o version of Itunes and the new upgrade in case that was the problem. Still an issue.
    Any advice?

you haven't got the 'repeat' button selected by accident have you? (sounds daft but people have done it before and not realised)
tap the screen while music is playing to bring up these controls.
under the time and scrubber bar on the left handside, see those arrows? if they are blue (tapped once) it will repeat the whole sequence of songs (an album, a playlist, etc.) tap it again a '1' will appear on them. this repeats the current thing playing. tap it again to remove these settings.
the arrows on the right will be highlighted blue when it's set to shuffle.
the arrows on the left highlighted when it's set to repeat.

  • Autofill always choosing the same songs ?

    Hi all,
I'm the happy owner of a 2G iPod nano (first generation) that I was given a few weeks ago. I'm using it together with iTunes 9.0.1 on my mac, and I have a question about the autofill feature.
Is it normal that autofill always chooses the same songs out of my library to fill the ipod with ? No matter what I do to those tracks (listen to them on the ipod, try do delete them in "manual" mode), they always come back when I sync with autofill. I do have quite a substantial amount of other tracks that I like as well, but it feels like autofill picked once and for all the tracks it likes most
What am I doing wrong ?

Sorry about that ; "rude" is not the word I should have used ; "abrupt", maybe, would be closer to how I felt. And yes, my ipod is actually a 2GB one (2G was a typo).
Let me explain a bit more what I'm trying to achieve, and what I wanted autofill to do automagically for me
My itunes library is abuot 35GB, so there is more than enough music to choose from. This is also why I am sometimes not creative enough when it comes to filling my ipod: I choose a few albums that I know I want to hear, I sync my podcasts, but all that often leaves me with maybe half a gig left on the ipod.
When I discovered autofill I was very happy because it chose stuff for me to top up the ipod, and so I ended up with plenty of good surprises : albums that I actually like, and had not listened to for a while. But when I synced the ipod again and again, I realised that autofill did not surprise me any more ; it only chooses high-rated albums and that's it. This is why I asked (naively, it seems) if this was normal behaviour.
But if it autofill cannot do it (what a shame, that really would be a killer feature) I suppose I'll have to write it myself with smart playlists. I'll post my answer here in case people are interested. the hardest point will be to make these playlists select whole albums. We'll see.
    Cheers,
    -G

The only solution seems to be using a third-party application like NanoFibre

  • Even when I shuffle a playlist, the same song keeps repeating.

Even when I shuffle a playlist, the same song keeps repeating.

Tap on the album art  and make sure the circular repeat arrow isn't blue with a little one next to it.

  • Playlist shuffle always plays the same few songs

I got a playlist that has roughly 250 songs. Everytime I connect my Ipod to charge it, then disconnect and start the playlist on shuffle mode, there's always a 20 to 30 songs playing first. If I close my Ipod and start the playlist again (still on it most of the time), it shows 1 of 250 and plays the same songs, but not in the same exact order (though sometimes it does for 2 or 3 songs). Just like if the shuffle was on "low" mode or something. It's still choose randomly some song here and there, but not that much since it the same few, ALL THE TIME for a while. The only way to get around this is to connect my Ipod to my computer again (it reset it somehow) or leave it open all the time so it knows wich song has been played (but that's terribly stupid). Is there any other way to go around that shuffling loop? I found myself skipping most of the time since I always hear the same few songs even though there's some songs in the playlist I've never ever played on the Ipod. Is there a way to set the "priority" (like play the most higher rated song first) or the "intensity" (from low to high) of the shuffle?
Got the last 7th gen. Ipod Nano.

On the iPod's Now Playing screen, there is a Shuffle button.  The symbol looks like two arrows crossing.  Is that set to ON?
I ask this because shuffing a playlist should NOT always put the same 20-30 songs at the top of the list. Shuffle means a randomly ordered list is created and played.  If the original playlist is in a somewhat random playlist order to begin with, playing it in play-in-order mode may seem like it is shuffling, even though the iPod is playing the list in playlist order.  And the same songs would be at the top of the list every time, because the iPod not shuffling the list.
Sorry if that's too basic, but I need to ask the obvious question first, and that question is, IS is the iPod actually set to shuffle songs?

  • Shuffle mode seems to always play similar/same songs

I don't know if its my imagination but when I use shuffle mode it seems to play similar or the same songs. Often I don't hear a lot of the music I know is there (1500+ songs). I've tried just restarting shuffle a few times which seems to start a shuffle at a different point.
Does anyone know if shuffle changes its variety of songs when its used or does it tend to repeat the same shuffle sequence.
    Thanks

I don't think its your imagination, I have noticed this also. There are many posts about this issue.
I have created a smart playlist for Not Played, and I shuffle from that when I want to hear different music.

  • Shuffle starts on same song on playlist when switched on, can I change this

Does anyone know how to set it so it starts at the song i was last listening to when the shuffle was switched on and not the same song each time I switch on my shuffle without using my shuffle function?

On the Ipod's Settings page, shuffle is off. I use a cassette adapter in my car. As soon as the ipod connects, it starts playing the first song. I still can't figure out how to set a default song or playlist. Thanks for your help.

  • IPod starts with same song in car

I use my new iPod for music when I drive my car.  Whenever I plug my iPod into my USB port, it always starts off playing the same song, which happens to be the first song on my list.  It's so annoying.  I do have my songs on shuffle.  All I have to do is press next and it starts shuffling fine.
By the way, this never happened with my iPod Nano.
Is there any way to get my iPod to shuffle a random song instead of it playing the one that is first on the list?  Any help?

I discovered on the radio itself that there is a Repeat Button on Button #6.  I stumbled on it by accident...it wasn't in the User's Guide.  Guess I answered my own question!

  • Ipod touch in shuffle mode keeps repeating same song

Why does my ipod touch keep repeating the same song continually when it's in shuffle mode?

    Turn off repeat.
Play the song, tap the repeat icon until it is white=off.

  • Odd iTunes glitch -- always plays the same song, after the song I selected...

After one song plays on iTunes, it always next plays one particular song -- not the next song on the list, but a specific track, every time. I'd like iTunes to simply play the next track down. How can I fix this?... thanks very much --

Do you have the the Repeat feature turned one? It is the arrowed racetrack on the left side of the Now Playing Screen right below the scrubber bar. Tap it until it is white for no repeat.
    Next:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • I touch music shuffle not working. Same song plays over and over. How do I fix?

The shuffle for my iTouch is not working.  It ontinues to play the asme song over and over.  I have powered on and off many times as well as re-syncing the unit.  I would try to take the battery out to reset but do not know how.  What next?

Sounds like the Repeat option has been enabled.  To disable it, tap the artwork of the currently playing track to bring up the additional controls.  Under the scrubber bar on the left hand side is the repeat setting.  Tap it until it turns white meaning that it is off.

  • IPod Touch 4th Gen starts from the same song

I recently updated my iPod Touch 4th gen, 32 GB to iOS 6.1.2, from 5.1.1. I skipped iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, and 6.1.1. After the update, I noticed that when I play music from my "All Music" list, my iPod always starts on the same song, no matter what song I listened to last. Sometimes it starts at a song that's farther down the list, but I haven't been able to figure out what circumstances caused it to start at that song. To make things more confusing, once it chooses a different song, it always starts from that song.
I have confirmed that Shuffle and Repeat are both OFF. This issue occurs whether I have recently charged/synced my iPod or not. It also occurs after I perform a hard restart on the iPod. I have not tried restoring it, because I have not had time to dedicate the several hours it would take to re-install iOS and copy all of my stuff back onto it.
My computer is running Windows 7, 32-bit. My iTunes is version 11.0.2.26.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if anyone has questions relating to this issue, I'd be happy to answer them.

I didn't mention this in my initial post because I didn't think it was relevant, but the Home button on my iPod doesn't work. I've been using the virtual home button provided by turning Assistive Touch on.
I did try the first solution you suggested, but nothing happened. I'll make another post when I try the second method.
On a side note, and if it makes any difference, the device in question is not a phone. It's an iPod Touch.

  • Random mode repeats same songs in previous sequence

My new 1GB shuffle doesn't seem to truly play back songs in random order. Whenever I select random mode, I hear the same songs I played previously--in the exact same order I heard them in before! Here's the sequence of events:
    1. I load the shuffle from my iTunes library.
    2. I listen to maybe 20 songs in random mode, then turn off the shuffle.
    3. The next time I turn on the shuffle in random mode, the same 20 songs I heard previously play back in the same order they were originally played. I have to skip through all of them to get to new material.
    4. I lsiten to maybe 20 more songs, then shut it off.
    5. The next time I listen, the same songs form both occasions play back in the precise order they were previously played in. Again I have to skip ahead manually.
    6. Stages 3 through 5 repeat each time I listen to more music.
I don't know if this is happening because of a fault in the firmware, or if it's a problem with the shuffle's flash memory system. Either way, the shuffle won't reset altogether when I enter random mode; it retains the songs it played before, and in the order played. Perhaps another firmware rev is needed to fix the problem.
Is anyone else experiencing this with their shuffle?

I found an article that says we're both kinda right (the bold is my formatting):
"The iPod shuffle includes a handy shortcut for going back to the beginning of its playlist: just press Play/Pause three times and the shuffle will start playing at the beginning of the first song. (You don't even have to say, "There's no place like home.")
If the iPod is in shuffle mode, it will reorder the playlist before starting over. You can use this trick to quickly get to songs at the end of the playlist, too. Just triple-click to go to the start, then press Previous to wrap around and get to the last song. While other iPods let you choose whether they start over or stop when finishing a playlist, the iPod shuffle always starts over, for the sake of simplicity, which makes this tip work. (It also works on other iPods if you turn on Repeat All in the settings. But other iPods have screens, which makes them somewhat easier to navigate.)"
It's actually a pretty informative article.
