Shuffle-by-genre or shuffle-by-artist, anyone?

hey there,
consider this my wish list to apple... unless
anyone knows how to do this...
pretty self-explanatory,
does anyone know how to shuffle-by-genre or
shuffle-by-artist on the ipod (5th gen.)
again, if it can't be done, sounds like a pretty
easy and worthwhile software addition. apple, c'mon!

i never realized that shuffle was also in the setting menu!
knowledge is power.
oh-- as for the discography question (a separate thread),
i'm trying to figure out if you can keep the artists alphabetical,
but have their albums listed in order of release. should
theoretically be an easy software fix, since the release year
comes up on itunes. this is the typical "discography" arrangement
found in music guidebooks, like allmusic.com

No. It's simple.
iPod Settings -> Shuffle set to Songs.
Go to Music -> Artist, scroll to the artist you want then press Play (not select).

You can select one artist and turn on shuffle and play everything then select another artist, etc.

Why is it that Itunes 7 makes Skip Shuffling in Artists Folders!?

iTunes 7 is so stupid and horrible, but I think teh worst part is they made it to any song you have clicked as "skip when shuffling" now skip when your in it's actual album or artists folder!! That is an outrage, now I can have no songs clicked as "skip when shuffling" because it ruins it in my folders, but then again it ruins it when I shufflke all songs at once.. Anyone know a way around this, and to get it back to the way it use to be before the iTunes 7 upgrade???
Also what does "Part of a gapless album" mean because I have it clicked on numerous songs and the album still has gapped songs in albums because of the stupid "skip when shuffling" being effetive everywhere now!

Can you clarify yourself I'm having a hard time following what you are trying to say.
"Skip when shuffling" just means that iTunes will not consider that song when shuffling your songs for a playlist. It doesn't actually cause a skip in your songs.
"Part of a gapless album" means that iTunes will not insert a pause in between songs. This allows songs that are part of a non-stop album to continuously flow from one song to another without an awkward pause in between songs.

Shuffle by artist - not what you think!

I've been trying to figure out how to change the shuffle setting in itunes so that it will shuffle by song but only play one song per artist until it goes through a full cycle of all artists. Sort of like the opposite of "shuffle by album" which plays an entire album before moving on to the next. Some bands I have a much bigger catalogue for, including many live tracks and b-sides, and because there are so many of them, I end up hearing songs by them far more than any other band.
Does anyone know how to do this in itunes? If not, is there a plugin available? Does anyone have any suggestions for a script or an automator prompt that would do this?
Please let me know, I beleive this functionality would be a great bonus for my listening experiance.

Well the error message is straightforward enough:
java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot forward after response has been committedOnce you have started sending the response page to the client, you can't change that response. So any forward/redirect of a response needs to be done early on in the logic. JSP pages have a buffer of 8k by default to generate output into. Once you have committed the output (either by filling up the buffer or flushing it) then you can't forward/redirect again.
The other thing to note is that after you forward/redirect it doesn't stop executing the page, so you should put logic like that in an if statement.

This typeTag calls retrieveContent which attempts to forward the jsp page.
Are these your custom tags? Are you expecting it to attempt to forward to a new result page?

How Can I make I Tunes Shuffle the Songs and More importantly the Name of the Artist,I noticed that on my iPod I can hear 5,6 songs back to back by the same Artist,,HOW DO I CHANGE THIS???? I know how to click on the option in the Smart Shuffle to less likely to Play the same song by the same Artist,,BUT I Would love to not hear back to back songs from the same Artist when I am playing Music from my ROCK AND ROLL Play List..???? Hey, I don't really feel like making individual playlists for my bands, so is there any way I can make it so that I shuffle through songs of one artist (or one cd)? I'd highly prefer a way that would only shuffle it when I want it to, and keep everything organized when I wouldn't. Thanks!

Yes.
On the iPod, go to SETTINGS > SHUFFLE, and set it to SONGS.
Then go back, select the name of your artist, and press play. It will play all the songs by that artist and they will be shuffled.

2 months ago my iTunes dj (0n my ASUS PC) lost its ability to shuffle. It will not allow me to turn "shuffle" on, and "refresh" does not work either.

Just connect the new iPod to your computer and setup the iPod via iTunes (instead of via wifi).

I am very maticulous about my music organization, and only maybe half the time am I able to change the Genre/Song Name/Or Artist

If iTunes won't accept changes to the tags see Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.
If iTunes appears to accept your changes but the original values reappear later then the files are likely to be mp3s with multiple tags. In such cases iTunes only updates one of them and may later read back the unchanged data from the other. To fix this select the tracks in question in iTunes, right-click and use Convert > ID3 Tags > None, several times, then use Convert > ID3 Tags > ID3v2.3. You will need to reinsert any embedded artwork.

Shuffling songs in "genre" or "artist"

Why won't my new i pod 30 GB 5th gen shuffle songs within a particular genre or by an artist ?
For example, when in "punk", I don't want it to play every Clash song within that genre in the same order all the time, then The Jam, then The Ramones and so on. I want it to randomly select, like my creative MP3 does. Similarly, I don't want it to play my 200 Bob Dylan songs listed under "artist" in the same order every time. I want it to randomly select from the list.
This is the only drawback I find in an otherwise great piece of kit.

Thanks Jeff, funnily enough I'd just sorted it. The problem I had was that in "settings", the top of the list was "EQ". I didn't realise "shuffle" was up there if I scrolled up instead of down !

On Music app using Genre option the "Shuffle All" no longer really shuffles all??

Since the newest iOS update while playing music on my iPhone 4S using the Genre option I no longer have the option to Shuffle everything in that genre. The Shuffle option only shuffles each artist's songs in that genre. Same on my iPad now, too! Is it actually now not an option or just hidden somewhere?

The functionality we were looking for actually resides in Sys Prefs > Keyboard Shortcuts . . . at the radio button at the bottom of the window . . . *Could the functionality be put in the Safari > Prefs > Advanced ??? *
* We couldn't figure this out for about 2 weeks . . . was pretty frustrating; esp. for a long-time user like me who really is into keyboard commands! Safari was tabbing to every single button on the page, which slowed down productivity . . .

IOS7 Problem: Music App: Shuffle Through 1 Genre

Hello,
I used to play one genre and play all artists in that genre and shuffle songs. I can't seem to figure out how to do this in iOS7. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't understand why they would take that feature off. I'm sure they'll put it back on once they realize the multitude of people that are complaining about missing options. I found a easier way to shuffle a genre instead of asking Siri. I'm Hispanic and Siri doesn't always understand what I'm trying to say when I say to shuffle "salsa" for example. But anyway, all you have to do is go to Artists..in the search bar type in the name of the genre and it should pop up as a "genre (1)" with the name of the genre underneath. Then you just click it, and on top it should say shuffle all songs and voila! Hopefully this helps.

I-tunes 11.3.1.2 and playing artists or shuffling artists

I wonder if someone is having the same problem as me or knows how to resolve it?
In I-tunes when I select the artists press button (brings up all the artists I have in my library on the left hand side of the screen). I then try to either play or shuffle an artist by right clicking on the artist which then brings up options to either play or shuffle the artist in question. The problem I am having is that most of the time nothing will play when I click on it. I have tried most of the artists in my library and only a few will work using this method.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue is or how to fix it?

Shuffling through a genre after the latest update?

I'm new to this community, so please bear with my here...
How can I play a specific genre on shuffle mode?
After iOS 7 was released, the genre menu only included artists, and you could not play the entire genre on shuffle. There was a workaround by going to "songs" and searching for the genre itself, where it gave you a list of the genre's songs instead of artists (so you could listen to all the songs within a specific genre instead of only one artist at a time).
After the latest update, this no longer works. Are there any ways around this?

I had the same problem and I just tried something and it works.
-Creat a playlist
-Search by genre
-Add all songs
***** that you will need to create a new playlist for all the genres but at least it works!!
