Shuffle & nano on same computer?

Grandaughter has a shuffle. Son just got a Nano. They only have 1 computer. Will iTunes recognize both of them? Son just installed his software. Will it over ride the installation of grandaughter's software that has been on computer for several months? When he installed software for his Nano, it asked if he wanted to continue the "uninstall"! He wasn't uninstalling.
Is grandaughter going to have trouble when she wants to update her music for the Shuffle?

Hi shirl16, and Welcome to Discussions!
You should have iTunes 7 to use the new iPod nano. You won't need to download anything else. iTunes 7 will recognize both the nano and shuffle just fine. Additionally, installing or upgrading iTunes should not disturb your music library.

  • Using both 1st and 2nd Generation Shuffle on the same computer

After owning a 1st Gen Shuffle for a number of years, today I decided to upgrade to a 2nd Gen.
What I would like to know is, can I use both shuffles on the same computer, through the same iTunes program, using the same music library?
There's nothing wrong with the 1st Gen unit, but I still want to use it as a back-up/secondary unit to the 2nd Gen one.
I have yet to connect the 2nd Gen unit to my computer. Before I do I would like to know whether or not I can use both the old and the new units. Also is there anything special I need to do to allow this to happen.
    thank you.

Nothing special to do. Connect new iPod and let it sync. Make sure only one is connected at a time.

  • Using 30gb and nano on same computer?

i have a 30gb video ipod and a nano. can i update them both only as long as they have the same library or do i have to use 2 separate computers? and what happens if i would go over 2gb? thank you for your help.

You can use them both in from the same computer and Itunes library: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
For the smaller iPod you can choose the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" which would allow you to create a playlist specifically for your iPod Nano and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your Nano (around 1800MB for a 2G). You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    For info:
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • Using a iPod and a iPod shuffle on the same computer

I was given an iPod shuffle for Christmas and my son has a iPod. He has down loaded the iPod program on my laptop with his songs. If I down load my shuffle on to the same computer will it delete his program and songs or can I use his itunes for my shuffle? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi. I've just added a shuffle to my iTunes for my wife's use. I have an existing mini. I have attempted to follow the advice you gave in answer to the previous message. I now have two differing playlists but I am unable to follow the steps shown in Method 2 where you use 'Sync music' & then 'Select playlist'. I cannot find these 2 in any of the iTunes menus or by right clicking. I have also referred to my original iPod Mini user guide & am unable to follow the advice in there either, where it says select iPod mini in the Source list. There is nowhere in my iTunes menus where it says 'Source list'. I would be grateful for some help. thanks

  • Can (2)1st & (2) 2nd gen shuffles be on same computer and same itunes

I currently have 2 1st gen shuffles - other kids wanted ipods so i got them the 2nd gen shuffles. My concern is will the software for the 2nds' be compatable with the 1sts'. If not will it be possible to have two different versions of itunes installed on the same computer. I don't want to give up the 1st gen. One's mine and I gotta have my music!!!! I tried looking up the answer everywhere on Apples wonderful support site. No help, so I am asking you fine people out there who have purchased Apples products and then been left to wonder in the dark.

  • 30 gb ipod and 1gb nano ipod --same computer???????????

My wife has had a 1gb nano for a year and has itunes installed on our laptop. I just purchased a 30 gb ipod and installed itunes on my own sign on but same computer.. My question is ....is there a way to transfer her songs over to my itunes

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

  • More than 1 nano on same computer

how do we keep each nano's downloads separate?
is there away to download an item from one nano to another?

    Hello there,
There are several different methods for handling multiple iPods with one computer. I would recommend checking out this Apple support document that explains and provides step-by-step instructions for each method.
[How to use multiple iPods with one computer|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495]
As to the second question, it depends on how you manage the two nanos on your computer (what method you choose from above). The most you will have to do is make sure that if you are using two separate libraries that the song is in each in order to get it onto both nanos.
    Hope this helped.

  • Ipod Nano and Shuffle on the same computer?

    Hi guys,
I’m having a problem. I recently connected my 2nd gen nano to my friend’s computer (who has a shuffle) and it thinks I’m her. How do I create my own “account” on i-tunes?
The problem is that now she has tried to connect her shuffle to i-tunes and it’s rejecting her!
I tried a different computer and it came up with her ipod name. How do I make it all mine and reset her settings?
    Thanks!!
    Natalie.

"How do I create my own “account” on i-tunes?"
Create a separate Windows User account for each person on the PC. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out. You can read about Windows user accounts here:
    Using Windows XP User Accounts
"I tried a different computer and it came up with her ipod name. How do I make it all mine and reset her settings?"
Have a look at this troubleshooting page, changing the drive letter for the iPod might solve the confusion: iTunes may exhibit strange behavior in relation to the iPod.

  • Using a 5gen iPod and Shuffle on the same computer

Before I go and install my wife's new shuffle on my computer I wanted to make sure that this won't screw up my existing iTunes and 5Gen iPod setup. I run Windows XP.
I would like for us to use the same library--can I do this? What would be the easiest way to do so?
    Thanks!!
      Windows XP

In fact, when you first connect the shuffle, you will get the option - something to the effect of "Your library is larger than this iPod will hold. Do you want to create a playlist from this library and associate the iPod with it?"
If you say yes, it will randomly choose a full list of songs from your libary and put them in that playlist. Of course, then you can pick and choose to remove and add songs from that list, but it's really a great way to start (assuming you and your wife share music tastes!)

  • Already have an Ipod mini. Can't work a 2nd ipod (nano) on same computer ??

I bought my first Ipod - a mini - one and a half year ago. Am using Itunes 7.0.2 on my laptop with that. Now i bought a second ipod - a nano 2 GB. Want to keep the old one, too, of course.
The problem: I can't run the nano with my itunes. Don't even see the nano, neither in itunes nor in the windows explorer. But its charging, which should mean it is connected with the usb hub. What am i supposed to do to be able to work with the second ipod. It SHOULD be able to run two ipods on one computer.

Try these for your connection issues.
iTunes 7 doesn't recognize the iPod.
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod.
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes.
iPod does not appear in iTunes.
Fast user switching in Windows XP is not supported.
    Strange iPod behavior.
When restoring the iPod, put it into disk mode first.

You can connect two or more iPods simultaneously if they are set to manual transfer with no problem whatsoever. They are only removeable drives after all.
I do this all the time.

    hiya!
how are you setting up your itunes library? are you using seperate user accounts for the two ipods/libraries, or connecting both to the same library?
if you are using two different user accounts, check to see if you've got a fast user switching issue going on:
