Shuffle - not recognised on desktop or itunes source finder

I bought my boyfriend an iShuffle for his birthday last July. It ended up not fitting into his windows PC, so we decided to use my computer for it (latest ibook). When I plug it into the port it flashes with an amber light. However it is never recognised on my desktop or in my iTunes. Also the fit into the port is loose (it has to be positioned "just so" for it to light up).
What can I do? I think it was too long ago that I bought it to return it, and we didn't try using it until recently (I know, i know...)
Please advise, thanks so much!

You don't have to buy an iDock for the Shuffle; all it is is a glorified USB cable extender (unlike the docks for the other iPods). Just get a short USB extension cable which you can easily plug into the PC; the Shuffle then plugs into the other end of the cable. Much cheaper than the dock and it serves the exact same purpose -- but it is not as elegant.
For the rest, try to use the iPod software to restore your Shuffle to factory settings. Once that is done, you need to enable the device's disk mode to have it show up on your desktop for the purpose of storing files on it. You do this by choosing Preferences in iTunes and accessing the iPod tab. With diskmode enabled, the Shuffle will mount on the Mac's desktop.
If your iPod software is unable to recognize the Shuffle, you probably need to have the unit repaired. However, first keep it plugged into a USB port for however long it takes for the amber light to go out indicating a full charge. There is a small chance that the Shuffle's battery is so dead that the device cannot be recognized; a full charge will eliminate this potential problem source.

  • Why is my 4th generation iPod Shuffle not recognised by the new Itunes 11?

Made the old mistake of "upgrading", this time to iTunes 11. I'm sure it is all very exciting and pretty and what have you, but as I can no longer see my device in iTunes it is all pretty pointless. Anyone else having this? Any solutions out there (as reverting to previous iTunes is, of course, a no-go - so double thanks, Apple!).

    - While charging try resetting the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next try restoring the iPod via iTunes.  First from backup and if still problem restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
    - However, I really think that the iPod has a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.  If defective Apple should give you a refurbished iPod.

    Hello obks1984
Check out the article below to troubleshoot issues with your iPod shuffle not showing up in iTunes. Also make sure that you have the cable plugged in completely to your iPod Shuffle and not just slightly pushed in.

Start here.  Is ti normal and expected for the computer to also see the iPod as a comera since that is how you get saved photos from the iPod to the computer.

Restore back up of my iPhone-password not recognised. After restore, itunes can not restore because it says the password is incorrect. But I can sign into my apple account with the password.  My iPhone is now set to factory settings as a new phone, what can i do to access the back up from my phone before I reset it.

That does happen.  It depends on how hard the server is being hit, as well as the connection speed of your system.  If you are on a windows system, you will want to disable any antivirus or firewall software during the download.

  • Ipod shuffle not recognised by computer after update to iTunes 7

I have just updated to iTunes 7 and now my computer will not recognise my iPod Shuffle. ("Periferique USB inconnu" - unknown USB peripheral in English.)
I have tried to reset it but until it appears in either the iTunes source window or in Windows explorer there is nothing more I can do.
Another problem is that when I try to run the iPod updater 2006-1-10 it tells me that I have the incorrect version of iPod service amd then aborts.
Finally I have misplaced my iPod installation disk so I cannot try reinstalling it.
Can anyone out there help me???

Unsolved till yet. I´ve read all the other threads touching this theme, but nothing substantial. No solution. No comments of Apple.
I´ve take a look into the files with Wordpad and I can see the lyrics inside the files. But, again, with the iPod nothing except the title.

  • Shuffle is not recognised by Windows or iTunes on first installation

    Hi
Just got an Ipod shuffle, which was marked down in price due to missing ear phones. Tried the installation software but when asked to connect shuffle to check to see if it needs formating did so, and the shuffle is not recognised by windows or the installer software.
Tried to go through apple chat, but when prompted for S/N it says that my shuffle was registered in Aug 2005 and not valid for chat support anymore. I suspect that the shuffle is returned goods and that it may already be registered to another user. Would this stop my computer recognising it?
Have downloaded updater and run that, same result.
    OS is Windows XP Pro
    USB port confirmed working
    Itunes 6.0.4.2
Ipod Nano running okay on same machine.
Ipod Shuffle is only showing constant green light when plugged into USB port (showing that it is at least getting power)
Any ideas, there seem to be similar threads to this so is it a common problem.
    thanks

  • Music on shuffle not recognised after upgrading itunes

I have recently upgraded itunes from 7.02.16 to 7.5.0.20. The ipod shuffle is recognised in itunes 7.5, but the music on the ipod does not list in the contents tab. The music is shown as on the ipod in the summary tab, and will play as normal when not connected to the computer. Can anybody suggest a way for itunes to list content?

After searching the forum I finally found that others were having the same problem with the 1st Gen. Shuffle after upgrading to iTunes 7. Even though it was a different iPod Shuffle and iTunes version their solution worked for me.
All I had to do was delete the "Podcasts" folder that had been created for the Shuffle and voila!

  • IPod Shuffle Not Recognised by Mac

    Hi,
My 1st Gen iPod shuffle appears to have stopped working. When it is not connected to a machine and I press play I get the flashing orange and green lights (I believe this means there is no song on the shuffle?). The battery level shows as full so thats not the problem.
When I connect the shuffle to my MacBook Pro it is not recognised by iTunes but it is detected as an iPod in teh System Profiler. Also it is not seen in Disk Utility so i cant reformat the iPod. This all happened at the same time as I upgraded to iTunes 7.0.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

What exact version of iTunes are you running on? Got to "Help > About iTunes", and could you please report back what exact version you're on? For example, my iTunes says "iTunes 7.0.2.16".
I would suggest restoring your iPod. (Since it's showing orange and green lights).
Try the four other Five R's to try to get your iPod recognized by your computer in order to restore the iPod. (Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall).
For more info, check out this link -> The Five R's
If the restore doesn't work, try installing the iPod Shuffle Reset Utility.

can i put it into disk mode if the computer doesnt recognise it at all?
    Yes, you can.
"Putting your iPod into disk mode" is simply a process that involves pressing a few buttons on your iPod, getting it into Disk Mode.
To put your iPod into Disk Mode, follow the steps in this article -> Putting your iPod into Disk Mode
As Bryan said, see if the iPod is recognized by your computer when it's in disk mode.

  • Ipod 5 not recognised by windows or Itunes, no drivers found in devmgmt.msc

    Hello there.
My Ipod 5th Gen is having problems. When I try to connect it to my windows 8 laptop I get nothing. Not even an "unrecognised device" message. I am guessing there is no driver to process it, or something like that. All my other USB devices are working.
I have tried all the ideas listed on the support. when I take a screenshot and try to find it as a camera, nothing appears. There is no "portable devices" section, no "other devices" section. It is completely unresponsive.
I have no conflicting software, and everything has been reinstalled, including AMDS.
Here is a screenshot of my Devmgmt.msc:
    thanks In advance.
