Shuffle plays same named songs consecutively

I have found this bug on iTunes 11, which was not present in previous versions of iTunes (10, 9, etc.).  The new way that songs are shuffled somehow goes by song title.  If one has a few songs with the same song title, these will be played consecutively.  This became painfully apparent while playing Christmas music.  In my collection I have several different versions of the same Christmas songs by different artists, (and in some cases the same artist as different albums may have the same song by the same artist.  I do enjoy all of these songs, but having them repeat is quite annoying.

Hi! Yes, I have also noticed this problem also, but it goes back a bit further than the new version of iTunes. Now that iTunes is much more visually based when it comes to the shuffle function you can see it layed out like your pic shows.
I Have looked into this in the past and again recently with my iPhone 5. From what I was able to find out, it seems that "shuffle" takes you list of music (by song title, A-Z) and shuffles all the songs like a deck of cards.
so if that is the case I can see why all my remixed versions of the same song play consecutively. Like a shuffled deck, not all cards(songs) get separated on one shuffle like iTunes does. Also, it could also be that iTunes detects 3 songs with the same title as one song. if that is the case then I completely understand why this happens.
I have 4 different versions of "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand (live, remix, club mix...) and everytime I shuffle my music... all 4 will play back to back to back to back...
I would think they would have to change the algorithm a bit to fix this, but until then I guess the next best thing would be to change the song title for each song to ge them spread out a bit more. (leading 1,2,3 or A,B,C in front of the title.
Happy New Year,
bulala!

  • Not Random - iPod plays same named songs in a row

I have noticed that the iPod on shuffle mode isnt entirely random. It plays all songs with the same name in a row. I notice this frequently as I have singles, studio albums and live albums on my iPod. Whenever it randomly plays song XYZ, if there are other songs called XYZ it will then play them before the next random name.
On the techie side, it sounds like they are using some sort of multimap and just randomly choosing a key and playing the whole set at this key instead of choosing a set and random and then randomising within this set...
Has anyone else discovered this phenomenon? It is very annoying!

I am having the same problem to! Any way to fix this!

  • IPod Nano - Shuffle plays same songs over and over

I have several playlists on my iPod Nano with varying numbers of songs.  But it seems that every time I use my iPod, no matter which playlist I'm using, I get some songs over and over.  I'll hear the same couple songs multiple times in a day/week.   I turn it off when we aren't using it.  So it seems like it's resetting the shuffle every time I turn it on.  Is there some setting I need to change to make it shuffle the songs more?  I don't remember having this problem with my iPod Shuffle.   I'm considering making multiple playlists (like a several workout ones with different songs in each so I get more variety) but wondering if there's a simpler fix
    Thanks

That is probably the Repeat setting.  It can be set to repeat ONE (repeats current song), ALL (repeats current list), or OFF (does not repeat).
Which iPod nano model do you have?  Does it have a touch screen interface, or the (older) click wheel interface?

  • Ipod shuffle repeating same ten songs...

I am new to the Ipod shuffle and so far only have 45 songs on it. If I have it on shuffle, it replays the same 10 songs over and over, or even the same song twice in a row. I have tried turning it off and switching to have them play it in order and it still plays a few of the same songs over and over. I have yet to listen to all of my songs...Please help!

    Hi again, Joe,
The only other option I can think of, besides sending your iPod in for service, is the iPod shuffle Reset Utility. Download the Reset Utility, and try resetting your iPod that way:
    About iPod Reset Utility
If that doesn't work, then you might need to send your iPod in for a replacement. If it really seems to be having a problem, Apple might just replace it for you.
When did you purchase your iPod shuffle, and how long will it be until your 1-year warranty (or the extended, AppleCare Protection Plan, if you've got that) runs out?
If your iPod has at least two months to go for its warranty, or so, then it would probably be best to send it in for service.

  • How to control shuffle play order?

    Hi Everyone
I have an Ipod shuffle I think its 4th gen.
On the computer control panel I can delete songs  Import songs in the library.  I can check and uncheck.  I can rate songs, I can follow all the advise from users and help forums online.  I cant seem to understand what I'm doing.  I do all the above taks thinking it is controlling the play back on the shuffle when I take the shuffle off the usb cable and putton the headphones.
Yet the shuffle plays sequential or shuffle the same exact songs ... I'd say 20 songs  of the 120 songs that has been downloaded to it.
Help! How do I play other songs and control my play order in the earphones.

    HI gerrlinggal
    thanks!
I had  to go to  play list  by highlight one song and right click the choose menu flyout Lawrence's" Ipod
This worked with one song i saw the syncing icon sync notice  at the top banner.  I had to highlight all new songs and preform that function as a group of songs
    That worked .
    Q.   But it did not over right songs and cant seem to find how to access the shuffles list of songs on the IPOd/shuffle.  So I can delete the old songs. ?????    The menu in the ITunes manger is difficult and seem to show only songs on iTunes.
I really had to get lucky finding.  the above  previous trick.

  • Playlist shuffle always plays the same few songs

I got a playlist that has roughly 250 songs. Everytime I connect my Ipod to charge it, then disconnect and start the playlist on shuffle mode, there's always a 20 to 30 songs playing first. If I close my Ipod and start the playlist again (still on it most of the time), it shows 1 of 250 and plays the same songs, but not in the same exact order (though sometimes it does for 2 or 3 songs). Just like if the shuffle was on "low" mode or something. It's still choose randomly some song here and there, but not that much since it the same few, ALL THE TIME for a while. The only way to get around this is to connect my Ipod to my computer again (it reset it somehow) or leave it open all the time so it knows wich song has been played (but that's terribly stupid). Is there any other way to go around that shuffling loop? I found myself skipping most of the time since I always hear the same few songs even though there's some songs in the playlist I've never ever played on the Ipod. Is there a way to set the "priority" (like play the most higher rated song first) or the "intensity" (from low to high) of the shuffle?
Got the last 7th gen. Ipod Nano.

On the iPod's Now Playing screen, there is a Shuffle button.  The symbol looks like two arrows crossing.  Is that set to ON?
I ask this because shuffing a playlist should NOT always put the same 20-30 songs at the top of the list. Shuffle means a randomly ordered list is created and played.  If the original playlist is in a somewhat random playlist order to begin with, playing it in play-in-order mode may seem like it is shuffling, even though the iPod is playing the list in playlist order.  And the same songs would be at the top of the list every time, because the iPod not shuffling the list.
Sorry if that's too basic, but I need to ask the obvious question first, and that question is, IS is the iPod actually set to shuffle songs?

  • Playlist in shuffle plays only (the same) 5 songs, then stops

One of my playlists in iTunes in shuffle plays the same 5 songs (out of 83) and then stops. If I uncheck those 5, and start with another, it plays that song and stops. I've tried deleting the playlist and recreating it, both in Smart form and not, all with identical results. I've tried unchecking and re-checking songs, no help. Putting the playlist on "Repeat all" does not help (it just repeats the 5). Playing without shuffle works fine.
My other playlists seem to be fine. Thanks for any ideas!

    Select all the songs.
Right click - get info. Tick *Skip when shuffling* and set to No then Apply.

  • IPod touch 4G plays same songs as before while on shuffle

My iPod will play a set of songs in shuffle and if I pause it thn come back to it a few hours later it won't play the song I left off on. It starts to play the same songs in the same order I heard them in earlier. I play the songs on shuffle from about 600 songs. It's not a playlist nothing it wrong. It just comes back to songs it already played.
For example in the morning I hear track 1,2,3,3,5,6,7,8 & 9
Them I pause it. When I come back in the afternoon it'll start playing track 3,4,5,6 ... And so on

    I have an ipod touch 32gb. Model: MC008BT Version: 5.1.1. 3rd ed.
Recently when clicking play on any song the ipod will shuffle through as many songs as there are in the album or playlist until it reaches the end without playing any songs. It also does not go through each song. For example:
a 62 song playlist. I start on song 16. Immediatly the song will shuffle: 16-26-54-62 and then back to the main screen. Also when the songs are shuffling the play button in the top right corner is on.
Music will play if i start from track one with shuffle turned off and repeat turned on. But then i am limited each time to 1-5 songs.
Ipod has been in excellent working order since this has happened.

  • 1st gen ipod Shuffle not updating play count for songs

I've noticed since I updated to the iTunes version 7.2.035 that plugging in and updating the library with my iPod shuffle no longer updates the play count for the songs I've listened to. Is there a known fix for this? Anyone else experiencing the same problem with their 1st gen ipod shuffle (512)?

Well, I have that problem too. My shuffle holds about 125 songs or so, yet I've noticed there are always a good 20 or so songs that won't play, no matter how many times I load them onto the device. I have had that problem since I inherited it from a friend.
My new problem is that every time I plug my iPod into iTunes, it no longer updates the playcount for songs. In other words, if I load a song that I've heard 3 times, hear it twice during the day, and replug in my iPod at night, it used to update that song's playcount in the library to 5, but now they still read 3. It's also failing to update the "date last played" field.
I use those to help make sure that I don't load the same songs over and over again by creating a custom playlist that will comb out songs played in the last few days and have a very high play count. Since these are no longer updating, I've noticed that I keep arriving at work only to find my iPod has the same or similar songs as the day before, and dude, if I wanted that, I'd listen to the radio!

  • Any way to play Spotify on shuffle -- ALL the available songs not just a playlist?

Is there any way to just play Spotify songs on shuffle, have it pick randomly among all available songs?  I would think this would be available but do not see how to do it.

Well, let's be clear, this was a PAST FEATURE that was simply removed.  Early on you could easily shuffle tracks among all playlists. Later that was removed. I posted on here somewhere and some smart person on this forum told me I could just shuffle from 'Library'.  OK, that was fine, that worked, I was happy. Now, with the Black Update, 'Library' is gone, along with the ability to shuffle-play songs randomly automatically darting in and out among all my playlists. That is a feature I dearly liked too, dang it. I agree, it's LAME to not be able to shuffle play ALL SONGS in ALL PLAYLISTS.
It would be great to shuffle all music available on Spotify but for now I would be very happy to just have the old 'library' function back. For now I just made a folder which I named 'Library' and put all my playlists in it. Since I also have a lot of songs that are not in a playlist I always save every song/album to a playlist named 'All music' and put that playlist in the 'Library' folder as well. I just like to play my music on shuffle and be surprised by some song I haven't heard in ages, don't know why it's not possible to just implement this in Spotify.I know it's not a pretty workaround but since there is no other option I got used to it. Too bad the folder won't show a the songs in it as a list...no logic behind that because it makes things more difficult like search and clicking on album art for instance.

  • Shuffle does not play all my songs.

I have over 2000 songs, but the shuffle continues to stop around 1100.  The other songs do not have the skip shuffle turned on.  How do I get the iPod touch to play all the songs?
    Thanks,

  • No Christmas Songs in Summer Shuffle Play

Absolutly nobody wants to hear Wham's Last Christmas on a bright summer day. And it makes you even more depressed listening to Kate Yanai's Summer Feeling playing on a cold winter's day with snow falling outside. But exactly this happens when you press the shuffle button and put iTunes on the DJ's position with your whole libary as it's music pool. My IDEA is to give the user the POSSIBILITY to make SHUFFLE know in which time of the year SOME SONGS are not to play!
A simple option (checkbox + date selector) like: (X) Don't use this song for shuffle / from: 3rd of March / till: 1st of July
What do you think about it. Wouldn't this be a great feature of iTunes 6.0?
Greetz from Bavaria (sorry for my grammar)
    Bertram

I also have all of my Xmas music as "holiday" genre. I too have a smart play list that finds all of these songs. What I do different though, is that I uncheck the Christmas songs when it is unseasonable.
I suppose you could do the same for songs that you consider to be more summery, or related to any other time of the year.
Un-checking them keeps them off of my iPod, saving the precious space for the other songs I want to hear!
One problem with building it into iTunes 6.0 --> how is a computer song supposed to know that a certain song should only be played at Christmas? Sure, if it includes Santa in the title, that would be a dead giveaway, unless there are songs out there that talk about Santa but aren’t really holiday songs:
Example: The Christmas Song by Dave Matthews - sure, it talks about Christmas, but isn't really a Christmas song that can't be played the rest of the year... smart play lists can only be so smart before they are downright scary!!
(still a cool idea though!) :-P

  • Why does my iPhone 4 play same song twice?

why does my iPhone 4 play same song twice?

I had the same issue in my 2012 Nissan Altima.  It was a function in my car's stero settings.  I had to go to the car's iPhone/iPod settings when the iPhone was plugged into the USB.  My settings come up automatically when I plug in and I can scroll through the commands to "Shuffle" songs.  Hope this helps.

  • Ipod Shuffle stuck on same first song - and remainder in same order

Hi .. back again .. well I tried reseting my Ipod shuffle back to the factory settings just a bit ago and still no joy; after turning it on and off again I go back to the same first song. BUT this time (after the reset) it is a different one from before as I had to reload the music in it.
    Thoughts??
    Marc

    Hello,
Have you tried resetting your iPod?: hold the "menu" + "select" (center) buttons together for about 7 seconds. Then the Apple logo will appear on the screen.
I know you've "wiped out the entire play list and started fresh", but have you tried restoring your iPod? See this link about it:
    Restore iPod
Restoring shuold take about 5 minutes. This process will delete the music off your iPod, but will not affect your iTunes library. Restoring isn't just deleting songs, because it can definetely clear up glitches in your iPod.
    I hope this helps,
    Kylene
