Shuffle recognized as shuffle on imac but on G4 seen as other ipod......

Hi,
my G4 has the newest iTunes which keeps attempting to update the software on my Shuffle (attached at the keyboard), because it sees it as another type of ipod. So I took it to my daughter's imac, (attached at the keyboard) and it gave me the option of restoring to factory settings which I did and with the newest updater, it said I had up to date software.
When I took it back in to attach it to the G4, it said it needed to update the software on this ipod (to 2.3, which is the software for one of the other ipods)and gave me no option for restore, which it said I needed a firewire connection for. When I said cancel, it won't let me load any songs onto the shuffle because the software isn't up to date......

I have tried to clear temp folder, uninstalled, and reinstalled itunes version 10.5.1.42... ipod touch 4th gen is seen fine. But when I eject this and plug in my old shuffle... itunes still reports it as ipod touch.

The only suggestion I have is to try and rename your device in iTunes to something else by clicking it's current name from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and typing in a new one.

This might sound like a silly question, but are you sure the iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch etc.) are still trying to connect to the same network from your own Airport router, as the MacBook Pros are? If you tap Settings on them, is the network name next to where it says Wi-Fi, the right one?
I've got a weird feeling that either in the past couple of days, a neighbour got an Airport device and hasn't set it up yet (causing your iOS devices to try to help), or that perhaps there's an issue with your Airport router and they're noticing it and trying to help out, while for whatever reason, Airport Utility isn't opening itself on the MacBook Pros like it normally should if there's a problem.
If you open Airport Utility on one of the MacBook Pros, does it report any problems with your Airport device, and can you view/edit the settings on it?

What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting this issue? Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of your PC? Have you tried a different USB cable?
What happens if you try to reset the device with it still connected to the PC?

Has this iPod ever worked on this PC or is this the first time you have time you have tried connecting it?

2nd gen shuffle seen by windows, but not by itunes on other computers

Hi Everyone..
Im trying to help a friend out, I suspect his 2nd gen shuffle is hosed, but thought I'd confirm with others.
He's had itunes and this shuffle for a while.. worked ok. Stored it for a year or so, and now found that when we plug it into his laptop, Windows XP will see it as a usb drive (and I can transfer files onto it as a flash drive), but itunes doesnt see it.
In mucking around with it for some time, I finally installed a fresh copy of Itunes over the existing one and when it restarted I was told the shuffle was in Recovery mode.. so I reset it from within itunes. Upon restarting, itunes again doesnt see it. I then downloaded the reset utility and tried that, again, doesnt see it.
I installed itunes on my win7 desktop, my wifes 1st gen ipod touch is seen a-ok, but my friends shuffle is not.. again, I can use it as a flash drive on the win7 computer, but itunes does nothing.
Is the shuffle toast?

Not looking good if you ask me especially since the problem was persistent across two different PCs and the reset utility did not help.

I may have found a software bug. Ver 12.0.1.26 Was playing in non shuffle mode. Turned shuffle back on but it is not doing it. Any guesses?

Hey Guys,
Recently my iPod Shuffle decided to die and stop working. The battery check button doesnt work (no LED lights up) and it simply wont turn on and play any music.
The most ironic thing is that, when plugged in my PC, Windows XP recognises it. I can see it in My Computer as a Drive, and can put stuff on it like a normal USB drive.
Not only this, but when iTunes is opened (or auto-opens in some cases), it also recognises my iPod Shuffle with all the songs i have on it.
This is the case with all 3 computers ive tried it with: my laptop, my normal PC and my pc at work.
the iPod Shuffle has the latest update and i've restored it numerous times. (yes i restarted the PC before "restoring the iPod Shuffle on all 3 PCs.) Also i have charged the battery (left it in PC for 6hrs) and it hasnt fixed anything. Ive charged it at home and at work.
I cannot figure out what is wrong!
-itunes sees it (with all the songs)
-after restoring it, itunes is able to load songs onto it
-windows sees it as a drive in My Computer
-windows detects it when plugged into PC.
I also had an iPod 4G 20gig that died on me about 2 months ago..
I love my Apple products but when they casue problems i dont like it Can someone help me? I Have also read and followed all the FAQ/articles about the iPod Shuffle in the Support section...and that hasnt helped
BTW: I am still covered under the One Year Warranty. But it seems Apple doesnt warranty iPod Shuffles? AS they expect it not to have so much problems as the iPod (Hard Drive)? I am not sure what to do, and if i was to warranty it i dont know how to approach it!

It is really nice to know you had followed all the trouble shooting steps to resolve the issue with the iPod shuffle.
Since, the iPod shuffle is not charging it needs to be serviced.

Playlists shuffled in itunes but alphabetic in ipod

I have an ipod classic which recently crashed and was reset and is working fine except my playlists are playing in alphabetic order rather than shuffled as they are in itunes. How do I fix that.
Also, can I suffle a playlist and then move songs into a different order? Instructions say you can but it is not working. Is there a thorough description of playlist functions somewhere?

The shuffle function in iTunes is independent that the shuffle function on the iPod. In the iPod, if you go from the main menu into the settings, you will find a shuffle option. You can change it to OFF, Songs, and Albums. Generally you want SONGS to randomly shuffle your music.
The iPod setting is universal to all "lists" you can play in the iPod (unlike iTunes where you can turn on/off shuffle for individual playlists). So... when you go to your playlist, it will be listed in alphabetical order (by artist I believe?). When you begin playing out of that playlist, it will play whatever song you start it with, but then after that, all other tracks from the playlist should play in random (shuffled) order.
So check your iPod and turn on the shuffle function in the settings menu.

I'm new to Nano. I can find all kinds of instructions on shuffling my songs, but nothing that tells me how to NOT have them shuffle.

With a song playing, swipe to the left. This will reveal an additional screen that has the icon that you can tap to turn shuffle off. Also, it might be worth going into your settings and checking that 'Shake to shuffle' is turned off.

I see my device (gen 4 shuffle) in iTunes but I can't click it

I have a gen 4 iPod shuffle--I also have a gen 2 and an old classic, and both of them sync fine. I've recently installed the latest iTunes, but had this same problem earlier. I can can see the device in iTunes under devices, but I can't click on it to see the playlist. I like to manually add songs, and when I click and drag something there, the device name gets a flashing blue border as if it is being copied there, but I still can't click to see what's there.

In the latest iTunes (12), if you show the iTunes window in Playlists view, you see the sidebar along left side of window showing Devices. In that view, you cannot click directly on the iPod (except for the 1st and 2nd gen shuffle**). Previously (before iTunes 12), clicking on the iPod in the sidebar showed the iPod's settings (management) screen, not its content.
To see the iPod's content from the sidebar, instead of clicking on the iPod, click on the small triangle to the left of the iPod's name. This drops down the iPod's content list indented below the iPod. To see the list of songs on iPod, click Music there.
You can also show the iPod's content list by clicking the "device button" on the horizontal bar and selecting the iPod. On the iPod's "management" screen, there is a sidebar. In the sidebar, under On My Device is the iPod's content list. Click Music there to see the list of songs on iPod.
** NOTE: For the 1st and 2nd gen shuffle, its content is a simple flat list of audio items, not distinguished by media type or separated into playlists. That is why you can click directly on those iPods in the Playlists view sidebar.
