Shuffle shuts down

My Shuffle, fully charged, music all loaded successfully, seems to think it's got a sleep feature--it automatically shuts itself down after 30-40 minutes of play and cannot be restarted, reset, or otherwise persuaded to play music again. After a couple of hours it will play again, although I have to reset.
Frustrating. Anyone have ideas? Hope it's simple and I'm just being stupid.
iPod, iBook, eMac, PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

are you getting any sort of blue screen? if so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
if the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (exact spelling, please.)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
if you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

  • Ipod shuffle shuts down PC when put in USB port

    Hello
I found a discussion on this topic from 2006 but there were no solutions.  Hopefully in 2014 there is someone out there that can help me.
I have successfully synced, loaded and recharged ipod shuffle on PC.  But this week I plugged in my ipod shuffle (early generation) into the USB port to recharge, the system shut down, and I got the "blue screen of death". Windows XP blue screen indicated there was some software or hardware that might cause harm to PC.  I had to close PC by pressing button on tower.  I tried couple more times and got same message.  No harm has been done to PC as far as I can tell.  I used the Safely Remove Hardware device and not sure it worked but removed shuffle.  I did do this 2 or 3 times with same result each time.  Ipod shuffle still works.
    Thanks!

I have found the solution.  I installed the most recent updates and it works now.

  • Plugging in my Shuffle shuts down my Mac

Plugging the shuffle into any mac in the house shuts down that mac.
There are no lights on the shuffle.
Resetting it from the control does nothing.
    Can anyone advise me here?

You do not provide what computer or which OSX you are using.
    Try a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery you should not remove yourself.
If that does not help, bring it to an Apple Genius bar (make an appointment) you may have a bad battery, or connection, or charge circuit, etc...
The diagnosis is free and they will give you options.

  • My ipod keeps shutting down when I'm on exercise equipment

I've had three iPod shuffles shut down this week.  It's very strange.  One was a brand new 4th generation.  I was on an elliptical machine at the gym and it stopped playing.  I never got it started again and it's not charging or recognized by my computer.  I've done everything it says online and it is just dead.  Same thing happened to another 4th generation that is about a year old.  But it has since charged and appears to work, but have not used it on exercise yet.  Then today, I was using an older 2nd generation iPod and it shut down 25 or so minutes into my exercise on this same piece of equipment.  Just went dead.  Could there be some sort of electrical thing going on?  Am I getting sweat into them?  I have the clipped to my shorts and wonder if maybe my body is some how disabling them?

    Hi bw1960,
If you are having issues with multiple iPod shuffles that stop responding during exercise, you may find the following article on resetting the iPod shuffle helpful. You may also want to try using them clipped to a different location, like an arm band, and see if the same issue occurs.

  • Shut down // start up problems

i am having power related problems on the intel mini and i want to know how widespread this is before i confront apple support. btw i love the mini--this is my 2nd mini. i have had a power on problem with a mini even on the day of purchase and it was exchanged graciously at the apple store in white plains this past july.<this was a power button failure issue>
here's whats happenning....1>it misbehaves on shut down or restart by software. there gets to a point where the screen is black but the white light on the box stays on and the vents in the back are still warm. my workaround is to manually shut down about a minute after the software shut down by holding down the power button on the back of the mini.
......2> start up problem. the mini wont always start when i push the power button. my workaround has been to turn off my surge protector for about 10 seconds then turn it back on and VIOLA the power button can start the mini. i guess it needs to be cold to work.
i have been reticent to go to the store because i rely on this machine too much and i am not the only user here.
can some reader disclose if such a hardware failure is known?
    thanks in advance.

thanks. i hadn't thought about the surge protector.
keyboard and mouse are bluetooth.monitor is digital 24". i have an external powered usb hub which runs my time machine external drive. i keep everything else unplugged from the usb hub during startup and shutdown because my ipod shuffle caused startup problems in the past.
i had similar troubles with my first mini when it was plugged directly into a wall socket. the surge protector seems to help--at least i can cold start the mini without unplugging it.
i have a genius bar apptmt this evening and i will see what gives. i am glad i made apple put in their own overpriced ram so i never voided the warranty. maybe i will buy a care plan to cover myself when i am there. but i so want to raise this mini from 2 to 4 gig now that mem is so cheap. if i can get this problem stabilized...
my very first mini was powerpc and the ipod shuffle, according to genius bar, caused its demise due to usb 1.1 and usb2.0 handshaking problems. i still have it somewhere and plan to install a harddrive to get it going.
    thanks again guys.
and i'd like to ask others again if this problem is more common.

  • Imac G5 Shuts Down or Message to Reboot

My Imac G5 1.8 sometimes just shuts down while it is sleeping. It doesn't always do it. Also I get this box on the screen telling me to reboot. The screen goes all fuzzy. The second issue happened when the logic board went a few years ago. It was replaced under a recall. I think the logic board is going again but I think the first issue is something totally unrelated. After doing some reading it might be the battery. Any thoughts?
I have been trying to get a Genius appointment to figure out what is wrong but that has been impossible. It is very frustrating that their appointment scheduler only goes out a couple of days and you cannot schedule a week in advance.
I am starting to doubt Apple's quality. Two logic boards in 5 years is horrible. My 1st Ipod went after about 4 years. Now my second generation Shuffle doesn't work with I-tunes 9.0.

Simply by processor speed, your machine does appear to be one subject to the issue involving defective electrolytic capacitors on the logic board. When Apple first performed board exchanges under the now defunct repair extension authorization, a contract manufacturer responsible for refurbishing the boards typically replaced only the units which exhibited physical defects before returning these boards to the service parts stream.
We take an entirely different approach, replacing all of the capacitors which may eventually fail, not simply those that exhibit the issue.
Write to the electronic mail address in my Public Profile and I will reply with a short illustrated guide to determining if you are affected by the issue, and outlining the option to have your board refurbished for $ 189.00 if your are affected, and wish to do so.

  • Fan running at full speed after shut down.

My brand new, three day old 8 core Mac Pro has already frozen three times. I have been reading about the screen garbage and then the freeze. That is happening with me, too. But what is going on right now as I type on my old G4 is that the fan on the new Mac Pro is running full speed and the computer has been shut down! The fan has been blowing like this for at least 30 minutes. I am hesitant to unplug. But I can't just leave the office with it blowing like that. What is going on?

Have a lot of USB stuff attached...
Apple keyboard/mouse, Kensington track ball, (then through hub) Logitech web-cam, External HD (USB) for time-machine, epson scanner, iPod USB cable, shuffle, dock, and...ah ha..may be a culprit...a Microsoft joystick for playing x-plane (when I was thinking about what I do when this happens, I said I'd switched resolutions to use xplane..but, of course, I would have had the joystick plugged in as well..this could be the one difference (I only connect the joystick when I'm going to use x-plane)).
I will experiment some tonight...shutting down with and without the joystick to see if that makes any difference.
Now that I think of it, that seems to be the one 'difference factor'...and it would be Karma to have the Microsoft hardware messing up my Mac.
I don't have any extra PCI...nothing in firewire.
Thanks for giving me a possible lead...I'll report back.

  • 651 shutting down on heavy cd use?

I bought a 651 system for my wife last fall; all standard equipment, nothing extreme or exciting. My four-year-old tried playing some games on it; they're all older and play directly from the cd as opposed to installing on the drive. Without fail, every time he tried to play the system would shut down after about ten minutes. This past weekend my wife bought an iPod shuffle, and I installed iTunes last night and tried to rip a disk. Again, after about ten minutes (during which I could hear the cd drive revving at speed) the whole system shut down.
My first thought is that this is an overheating issue. Is this common? Anyone have any thoughts or recommendations?
    Thanks!

  • Startup and shut down problems with Nano

I am wondering if there are any preferences or settings I can change to prevent the following annoying problems:
    1. The Nano starts up on its own when jostled around in a bag with other items. Sometimes it will actually start playing and shuffling songs via the built-in speaker and drain the battery.
    2. The Nano is sometimes difficult to shut down: while holding the shut-off button at the bottom of the wheel, a menu drops down asking if I want to add the current song to "on-the-go." I am then forced to scroll up the menu to choose "cancel" and try to shut down again. Sometimes this irritating occurrence repeats itself over and over. Whatever "on-the-go" is, I would rather disable it than have this keep happening.

The Hold button is on the top of the iPod Nano not on the scroll wheel = iPod Nano 5th Gen. User Manual.

  • ITunes shuts down within 1 minute

For several days now I've been unable to use iTunes at all. At first it would shut down whenever I tried to dock my Shuffle, and give me the error message and ask if I wanted to report the problem to Apple. Then it stopped even giving me any message and just shut the program down, even if I didn't do anything in the program, within about a minute.
I've been reading this forum and tried some of the tips: trashing the Cache folder, deleting iTunes-related plist files. I even deleted iTunes completely and installed version 7.0. It didn't help.
This problem started when Software Update downloaded both the latest Tiger update and iTunes 7.1.1. As such, I'm not sure which of those elements caused the problem. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

If you've tried everything with iTunes, then try downloading the appropriate Tiger Combo 10.4.9 update from here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
It's a large file to download, but sometimes running the combo updates fixes a slew of issues, reaad this article

  • Why is my iphone coming on only connected to a PC and then shutting down after 1 minute???????

Seriously need help. My phone is going crazy right after ios is installed. It turns on only with a PC and then shuts down after 1 minute?  Never thought Id have problems with Apple.

I have had the same problem with my daughter's IPOD nano. Spoke with several technicians to try to fix the problem to be told it was a battery problem and to send it in it was covered under warranty. Was told that it was a problem with many of the nanos. I sent it in to have it returned with 1 week stating that it had "liquid spill or submersion damage indicated by the pink/red color of liquid submersion indicator located inside headphone jack." It has not had liquid or submersion damage and I can't prove otherwise. It works only if it is attached to computer. Will not turn on unless attached to computer. Maybe I am wrong but it it has damaged by water would it still work plugged into computer. Now I am out $200.00. This frustrates my because my ipod shuffle quit working 2 months after I got it. Thats why I bought the nano thinking it was better quality.

  • Ipod mini- 3/4 battery shutting down with "no battery power remaining"

After fully charging my ipod mini, while it still has 3/4 battery on the battery meter in the corner will shut itself down due to "no battery power remaining" if i push the NEXT button too many times in a row. This is a consistant problem and always happens when i have a half battery power or more. I do keep it in Shuffle mode, and i am fully aware that will drain the battery quicker, however there should be no reason a freshly charged ipod with 3/4 battery should not be able to shuffle a few songs without shutting down. Has anyone else ever had this problem or knows of any solution for fixing it? Any help would be appreciated!!

my ipod is doing the same thing...except when I turn it on it will say i have 3/4 battery for only about 10 seconds, then it turns off. All the other forums I have read say to get the battery replaced, but Apple can and usually does send a faulty battery so it might be time for a new ipod.

  • Shuts Down Playing iTunes

Search did not turn up anything.
I have an Airport Express that I use to play tunes on my stereo. Open iTunes and set to shuffle play. After about 15-20 minutes iTunes stops playing and I have to open the screen, enter my password, and start playing the same or another tune. Sometimes the computer shuts down to a point that on opening the screen it reloads programs I'm not using, as if I have re-started the computer.
In System Preferences - Energy Saver I have "Put Hard Disk To Sleep When Possible", and "Computer Sleep" and "Display Sleep" set to less than 15 minutes. I would think that when playing iTunes and the keyboard is not touched to reset the sleep clock the Mac would still continue to play, even if it goes into sleep mode with the sceen dark. I can open my internet browser and leave it alone for what seems forever and the computer goes into sleep mode but does not shut down like when using iTunes.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like this problem has been around for a time.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/10010315?messageID=10010315#10010315?messa geID=10010315
Tried some different key words in Google and found this:
"Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1776
"There are reasons why you may want your Mac to stay awake even though you are not using the keyboard or mouse, such as when you are:
    Watching a DVD movie
Listening to your iTunes music library
    Running an automated backup
Away from your computer while downloading large files"
"Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:
Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)"
Clearly my iTunes is not preventing the computer from entering sleep, if that's the problem. From the above statement it would seem that iTunes would automatically prevent sleep, yet that is not the case for me.
I don't think Apple should require that you go to Power Saving options before playing iTunes, it should be automatic that iTunes just stays playing, especially on AC power.
I can't believe there is not anybody out there that can't clarify this issue.
