Shuffle will charge, but not turn on or play

My Shuffle (1 gen) will charge and lights up when charging, and is recognized by iTunes when put it in the UBS port. But, it won't turn on or show the battery charge when it's not plugged into the computer.
I did the 5 Rs and restored, but it still won't work. It is not under warranty. Any tips??

I almost have the exact same problem. There is one minor difference.
My shuffle charges and shows up in iTunes while plugged into the USB port.
My problem is that when I unplug it and I use the on-off switch to turn it on, it does not "boot" and play more often than the occasions when it does "boot" and play. I first noticed my problem last week immediately after I accidentally switched off the shuffle while it was playing. When I switched it back on it the usual green light for a second didn't come on, the LED on the battery status button did not light up at all, and of course, it wouldn't play.
It stays like this most of the time. Occasionally it will "boot" and play shortly after unplugging from the USB port. This is not good because of course; one does not always carry a device with a USB port.
I wonder if indeed it needs a new battery. Can anyone confirm this? Is this battery replaceable?
Does anyone know the MTBF of one of those batteries in hours? I can honestly say that I haven't used my shuffle that many hours. I use it to work out for about one hour, three times a week. I have been doing that for over six months now. Before that I didn't use it that much after the initial period after buying it when I used it all the time. I forgot to switch it off and the battery drained on only one occasion a couple of months ago. I have a little bit of doubt as to whether or not it is the battery.
I've been reading about the iPod Shuffle Reset Utility. Many folks have been using it to resolve other issues. No one has mentioned that this utility can solve our particular problem. I hope that someone from apple gives us their 2 cents (or more) and help us clear this issue. I suppose running the utility can't hurt. I believe all it does is erase all data and settings and re-installs the original software that it came with. I have created a playlist in iTunes that contains the same list of songs my shuffle has right now so I can restore all the songs in the same order using that playlist after the reset.
Looking forward to solving this and I would truly appreciate any comments and/or questions that would contribute to finding a solution.

  • My Mac Mini will charge - but not sync with - USB-connected devices (ipod, camera, memory card reader). How do I fix it?

My Mac Mini will charge - but not sync with - USB-connected devices (ipod, camera, memory card reader). I have tried unplugging the devices, restarting the computer, selectively unplugging and plugging in the devices, closing and opening the relevant applications (iTunes, iPhoto, etc). I have tried using different USB cables.
It's like all of a sudden the synching service stopped functioning or recognizing these devices for some reason. The other ports work just fine (monitor).
The only USB-connected external device that appears to be unaffected is the USB SuperDrive and it works on all the USB ports into which I plug it.
    How do I fix this?

Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens or doesn't happen.

  • HT4528 iphone 5 - dock will charge but not play music.

I've read and read and read posts about this same problem with no solution found.
I have an iphone 5 that just randomly quit playing music through any docking accessories.  It will continue to charge, but not play music.  It worked when I first got it, but later just stopped.  Same docking accessories, same cables, same phone.  Nothing changed, just quit working.  My phone is not jailbroken.  I have restored it.  I updated to the ios7 software which fixed the problem... for a day.  Now we are back to it not working again!
Please, if anyone knows a way to fix this, help me!!!  This is the whole reason why I own an iphone.  It keeps me from having to have a seperate phone and ipod!!!
    Thank you in advance.

Try unplugging the docking station from power for a minute or so, then also in that time, reset your phone by holding the power button and the home button until it turns off. Then turn it back on and try again.

  • My iphone4s will charge but not sync when connected to my macbook pro, using the latest itunes

My iphone4s will charge when plugged into my macbook pro but will not sync. I am using the latest version of itunes and I already tried restarting both the computer and the device. What gives??

After days mucking around this worked for me..
For Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
Right-click the Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, or Apple iPod entry in Device Manager and choose Update Driver from the shortcut menu.
Click "Browse my computer for driver software."
Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
Click the Have Disk button. (If the Have Disk option is not  present, choose a device category such as Mobile Phone or Storage Device  if listed, and click next. The Have Disk button should then appear.)
In the "Install from Disk" dialog, click the Browse button.
Use this window to navigate to the following folder:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
Double-click the "usbaapl" file. (This file will be called  "usbaapl64" if you have a 64-bit version of Windows. If you don't see  "usbaapl64" here, or if there is no Drivers folder, look in C:\Program  Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. instead).
Click OK in the "Install from Disk" dialog.
Click Next and finish the driver-installation steps. Open iTunes to verify that the device is recognized properly.

  • I have just got a iPod 5 gen 32gb and lightning adapter but can't get it to work with my docking station it will charge but not play audio please help??

I have bought a 5th gen iPod and lightning adapter but it won't wrk on my docking station it charges but doesn't play audio? Please help

Does the dock manufacture say it is compatible with the 5G iPod with iOS 6.0.1?
Have you went to the manufacturer's support site? Contacted them?
Try resetting the dock. How you do that depends upon the dock
    Sometimes this works
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • IPod mini will charge, but not update songs

Just last week my ipod mini stopped updating songs. Before that it was working fine. When I plug it in, it charges but iTunes doesn't pop up and I can't update my songs into my iPod. Someone Help Me.

Hello, my ipod charges when I connect it to the computer, but it doesn't appear neither on ITunes or the computer itself. As soon as I put the USB in the port, a message in the right corner comes up saying that the USB peripheric isn't recognised..So obviously if ipod doesn't appear on Itunes, I can't put new songs on it.
I tried connecting it to other computers and it works.
    What can I do??? Thanks

You can take it to an Apple retailer and get a refurbished replacement for it.
If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken
Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
ATTN: Beginning July 2013 Apple Stores are now equipped to do screen repairs/replacements in-house on iPhone 5 and 5C. In some cases while you wait. According to Apple this is the beginning of equipping Apple Stores with the resources needed to do most repairs for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that would not require major replacements. Later in the year the services may be extended as Apple Stores become equipped and staffed with the proper repair expertise. So, if you need a screen repaired or a broken screen replaced or have your stuck Home button fixed, call your local Apple Store to see if they are now doing these in-house.

  • IPhone will charge but not be recognised by iTunes or iPhoto, other iPhones will though with same cable, How can i fix it?

Suddenly my iphone stopped being recognised by the Mac, ive tried other iphone which work so I know the cable and itunes work but my iphone is simply not picked up.
I dont know why although in june 2010 I got it slightly wet but it dried out and worked again about 5 days later if thats related?
I have no idea what to do and my tech specs are:
    Macbook pro 2011 late
Newest version of Lion OS X
    iTunes at newest version
    iPhone with os 5.0.1

I had the same issue, my iphone would charge when i plugged it in but the computer would not pick it up, so i read this forum and other ones as well as went through the apple approved methods of trying to fix it and did all of them, then today my iphone charge ran down because i hadn't taken the time to plug it in to charge and it died, then when i plugged it in and it got it's life back and was charging, the computer read it,
so i recommend letting the charge completely run out until your iphone dies then plug it in.

  • 2nd gen ipod shuffle will charge with one computer (vista) but not the other computer (windows 8).  Please help!

My 2nd gen ipod shuffle will charge on my old vitsta computer but not my new windows 8 computer. Does anyone know why that might be? The new computer recognizes the ipod and I can see everything on it, change settings, etc. it just won't charge. Is there a reason as to why this should be happening?

Just bought a refurbished 2nd generation ipod
shuffle. I am running the very latest version of OS X
and iTunes on an iBook G3 600 mhz with the slower USB
ports, not 2.0 ports. The ipod mounts and is
regognized by itunes, but I cannot seem to register
the ipod from itunes, it always has an error message
when I submit to register (all forms are filled out
correctly). The registration window in iTunes shows
that this ipod is formatted for Windows (from the
previous owner I assume) and may be causing my
    problems?
No. ALL shuffles are FAT32 format.
The other problem is that it will not sync and
transfer any music from itunes library. I am trying
to transfer simple mp3 files that should be compliant
with the ipod specs. No luck even after multiple
restarts on the ipod. Any help would be appreciated!
    Thank you.

  • Ipod will charge, but is not found

Hello, I have had my Ipod Mini since march of this year(2005) and it has been working great up until about a few months ago. My Ipod will charge but is not recognized on the computer, and I have tried it in every one of my USB 2.0 slots(10 of them).
When it is recognized sometimes it will update the songs onto my Ipod and then it will just disappear from my computer, like its not connected, but it will still charge. What I want is for when I open "My Computer" it will show that a Ipod is connected and I can open if from there. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be welcomed. And yes, I have tried every one of the support things on the site and in my Ipod booklet.

Ive restarted my computer many times and its still the same, it only works about 15% fo the time, and when it does rihgt when it finishes updating it will act like its not there anymore.

  • Upgraded lastest version of itunes, now ipod touch will not sync. My ipod is recognized by my computer and will charge, but itunes does not recognize it.

I am not tech savvy, to say the least. But the latest versions of itunes and an upgrade for my ipod touch popped up for an upgrade, so I upgraded both. Now, my ipod touch (purchased in 12/2010) is not being recognized by itunes. My computer picks it up and it will charge, but nothing else is happening. I have tried resetting the ipod...but that didn't help anything. What else should I do? I keep seeing info about uninstalling itunes....how does that work and will all of my files (music and apps) be ok?

General troubleshooting for unrecognized ipods in Windows is mentioned here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1495
Start by checking Apple Mobile Device Service: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567
Removing and reinstalling iTunes is covered here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
As mentioned in this article, reinstalling iTunes will not delete your music and apps, but backing up is always a good idea.
iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes. While it is highly unlikely that you will lose any contents of your iTunes Library when following these steps, it is always a good idea to ensure that your iTunes library is backed up. See how to back up the contents of your iTunes library in How to back up your media in iTunes.
