Shuffle won't mount, but it did!

My shuffle will not mount on my G5. It did up until Tuesday, then I added new songs and now it won't play, won't mount, and when I try to do a software restore, the updater program freezes up. Any ideas?

I'm currently having the same issue. For anyone reading this in Apple's quality deparment ( *crickets chirp * ), here's an account of the behavior:
- On Friday, I purchased a song from the iTunes music store. After downloading the song, I plugged in my iPod shuffle into a USB 1.1 port on my PowerBook.
- During the run, the iPod played all the other songs without a problem. Yet, I couldn't get the new song to play in either shuffle mode or straight mode.
- Monday, I lost the ability to connect my iPod as a disk to my home PowerBook or any number of machines at work, all running Windows XP but different hardware.
- Tonight, I tried to restore the iPod update from the most recent patch. The software asks me to connect an iPod. I plug in my iPod shuffle and the software updater never finds it.
- Using the System Info and USB Probe tools, I can find that the iPod is mounted as a device on the machine. I believe this means that hardware-to-hardware the iPod shuffle is connecting.
- My system.log contains a number of entries like "localhost kernel: USBF::4681.218 AppleUSBOHCI[0x2012000]::CreateGeneralTransfer - trying to queue to a stalled pipe" and "localhost kernel: USBF: 4681.218 AppleUSBOHCI[0x2012000]::DoIOTransfer - error 0xe000404f queueing request". Again, there's a physical connection, but I'm not sure what that means.
- When I run iTunes 6.0.1 with the iPod connected, I get nothing but the color swirl cursor. I haven't launched Spin Control to find the hangs, but that just might be the next thing on my list of areas to venture.
- My iPod, which still has the playlist from Friday, no longer plays the music. Just get the orange and green rapid fire lights.
- Now, I've started to look for answers in the discussion boards to try and get some resolve. This has led to frustration and hence this post after reading a number of other posts.
I agree with Phil, given the users having this problem (which seems linked to iTunes 6.0.1 and the iPod update), I would have expected a quality driven company to acknowledge the issue and respond to those users. I guess Apple is too busy trying to maintain the marketing dominance they forgot what quality engineering and coding was all about. Instead of worrying about the other 30% of the market, why not take care of the existing 70%. Otherwise, you'll upset so many people, you'll drive that market share down to 4%.
I know this was a foolish waste of my time. No one from Apple engineering is even going to get in contact with technically savy users to resolve this problem. I'm going back to CD's. At least I don't have to worry about updating those with faulty software.

Update 8/25, I returned the iShuffle for a refund a couple days ago and today I finally got a reply to my support request pasted below. Maybe this will save someone the trouble of waiting a week to learn.

Comments : Just bought an iShuffle from Good Guys today and having problems getting it to work. I have OSX 10.3.9 and iTunes 4.5.9 installed on a G4 533 with 896 mb RAM.
When I put in the ipod cd it did not finish the install - settings were dimmed and I had to just quit. Plugged the iShuffle in and after a couple hours the charge light went from amber to green but not being seen by the mac. Tried restarting, including a shutdown and power back on all to no avail.
FAQ seems rather useless and manual has nothing to offer. Maybe I should just return it and go with the XM2GO instead.

  • 1gb IPod Shuffle won't mount

My IPod Shuffle beginning yesterday won't mount on my desktop and isn't recognized but ITunes on both my desktop and laptop. But through System Profile>Hardware>USB, the IPod shows up in a USB port. Could this be because of an ITunes or Ipod update.
      Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Dual 867 G4, Ibook G3

It could be due to an update .... had you updated either of them?
Do the simplest things first: Just log out to a Restart and see it that makes the Shuffle appear. That done, plug it into a working high-power port and just leave it there for a while, say up to an hour.

You don't have a PowerMac if you have a Mac Pro.  You don't have a PowerMac if you have Mac OS X 10.6.  PowerMac is the name for the desktop professional Macs prior to mid-2006.   Two possibilities, the drive is dead, or the drive has a bad directory.   For a fee you can isolate either on my FAQ*:

  • Hard drive won't mount - but only on one Macbook Pro

    Hi guys
So I have a brand new Macbook Pro 2.4 with retina and 8gb (like 2 days old). I'm on Mavericks. This question also concerns a Lacie Rugged USB3 1TB drive, it is bus power only.
My lacie won't mount on my new mac. An identical lacie will, as will a few older other lacie drives I use for archiving and occassional long term backups. I've checked this unmountable drive on 8 different macs (friends, work, mothers) everything from other imacs, to old G5 power pcs, and even my mums ancient ibook g4. They'll all mount it. My macbook pro wont.
    * It's nothing to do with ports (all ports work and power various devices) and cables (different cables also do not work, and they work with other drives).
    * It does not appear in disk utility
    * It does not appear in the system profiler/report even though the ports show up no trouble
    * the drive powers and spins up
    * i've even just formatted the drive on another computer in extended journal and it still does not appear yet will still mount on another machine
I'm tearing my hair out. Help me! Does anyone have any idea's what the **** is up with this thing?
    Thanks

    Liam Maloney1

  • SD Card Won't Mount But Works In Camera

I have an SD card that just won't mount, I have tried it in two macs running 10.6 and two PC's running XP and with two different card readers. I am trying to recover some images on the card, it has been formatted in the camera & then had two photos taken which were written to it. The odd thing is that if I put the card into a different camera it works, you can see the two photos taken after formatting. Any ideas about how to mount the card so as to run some recovery software?

I have been looking for a fix to the same problem for weeks. I have tracked it to an OS conflict on the MAC.
I have access to several iMACs and MACbook Pros. All the Laptops can read the SD cards. In fact all the iMACs at my school can read the card through my card reader. When I bring the card reader and the SD cards home to my iMAC running 10.6.4 it wont read the card. I also tried the card reader on MACbook Pro running 10.6.5. It does not work.
It can not be the card reader because it works on other MAC running older versions of OS X.
It must be a conflict between the newest versions of OS X and my older card reader.
Does anyone know of a good card reader that is working with 10.6.5 and SD Cards?
    Additional information:
I use the SD cards in Canon video cameras and a Kodak Zi8. All are HD video files.

  • Shuffle won't mount on G4 but works perectly on powerbook G3.

    Hi, I have a 1Gb Shuffle.
Works perfectly on my powerbook and refuses to do anything on my G4 quicksilver.
Both are running the latest OSX 10.4.6.
Will not mount in itunes and occasionally mounts into finder but when I click on it it pops up a blank finder window after a lot of beach ball spining.
Haveing read plenty of posts this seems to me to be a software problem as the shuffle works normally when connected to the powerbook.
Anyone got any idea whats causing this problem.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Looks like a software problem in the shuffle, try a restore and format on the shuffle. Download the latest updater from apple site www.apple.com/ipod/download and do it. It should work fine.

  • Shuffle won't restore but will take files

My shuffle, about a year old, has some issues:
When I connect it, it shows up in iTunes but not in the Finder. Except sometimes it shows up in the Finder for a few seconds, then disappears.
Using iTunes 7, it will allow me to add files.
According to the settings, 386 out of the entire 1 gig is orange.
When I try a restore, I get a dialogue box that says the shuffle cannot be found.
I have tried the power slide reset & the three second button reset, without result.
Anyone got any ideas about this? I'd like to get rid of the orange!

    Well, finally.
My son just bought a new 20 inch iMac, so I tried the shuffle with his computer. We reassigned the shuffle to his computer, & then did a Restore...which worked!
The orange space on the shuffle went from 386 to near zero.
My computer still doesn't recognize the shuffle, but iTunes does. I'm giving the shuffle to another of my sons - with any luck, he won't have these problems at all.

  • Exernal drive won't mount but seen in disk utility

2011 Macbook Pro 2.3Ghz 8Gb on OSX 10.7.2 connected Maxtor One Touch 4 750Ghz firewire drive. Has been working perfectly for 3 years.
I'm runnign Pro Tools 9. I had some issues with IK Multimedia plug-ins being de-authorized earlier today. IK suggested repairing disk permissions (which I did). Seemed to be OK, but a few hours later when I booted up the MBP it no longer recognises the drive. The drive is booting up & I've swapped out the cables, so I can rule them out.
The drive was called "PT drive". It had 3 partitions: "Rough bounces", "Samples & loops" and "PT Session drive". Now, it doesn't appear on the desktop and Pro Tools can't see it.
However, disk utility sees the drive as "750Gb Maxtor" with 3 partions: "disk1s1", "disk 1s2" and "disk1s3". All of the disk utility options are greyed out (Verify disk permissons, repair disk permissions, verify disk and reair disk) so I can't do anything with them. When I try to eject the disk, I get an error message saying the drive can;t be ejected because applications are in use. I don;t have anything running in the background.
I don't have a backup for this drive, so really need to get the problem sorted urgently. Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Re-booted everything up again this morning & the extral drive has appreared again. Very strange. I've created a back up drive in case I have similar probs in the future. A lucky escape!

  • Firewire HD won't mount but Target Mode works

I am trying to backup and troubleshoot a client's PowerBook G3 (Bronze keyboard). Have tried to mount two external firewire drives, La Cie PocketDrive 60 gig, Porsche 110gig. It doesn't recognize either (with either port) but does work in target mode so the ports must be okay. Have made sure all cords are secure etc.
Can't remember the first thing about OS9.
    Help....
    Powerbook G3 (Bronze keyboard)
    OS9

    dazz,
Often resetting the PRAM will correct the missing FireWire ports. I would shut down, disconnect all peripherals, then reset the PRAM...wait for 3 startup chimes. Now connect the drive and see if it appears. If not, shut down the powerbook, remove the main battery and disconnect the power adapter for 5 minutes, then restore all power and start up. Now see if the drives appear. If not, shut down then cold start with the drive connected. If the drives are still missing, leave one connected, then open the Apple System Profiler under the Apple menu and see if the drive is present.
Troubleshooting peripherals is pretty much the same in 9.x and 10.x.

  • Won't mount but get "ok to remove" checkmark

i did a quick search and couldn't find this exact problem so sorry if it's a repeat. . .
so, i plug in my 1G ipod and, rather than mounting and displaying the "do not disconnect" sign on the ipod screen, i get the "ok to disconnect" checkmark and it continues to charge (as if i'd just ejected it)--it's not displayed on itunes or as a drive on the desktop. i've run the diagnostic mode (all seems to be in order) and did a soft reset (pressing play and menu) a couple times. help!
if it helps, this just started happening after an auto software update last night (os10.4.8 among other things).
    thanks.

    Chris,
I have the same problem. I HAVE discovered that you need to have iTunes running (7.0.1), and switch the HOLD button off so the iPod controls are active. I am still running OS X 10.4.7 though. When you plug in the FW cable you will briefly see the Apple startup screen on the iPod (is the iPod restarting itself?) then the OK the disconnect checkmark screen apprears, then after a few seconds the Do not disconnect screen apprears.
All of this is happening for me on my iBook G4 1GHz.
I too would like an explanation from Apple on this mystery. It all started to happen after I upgraded to iTunes 7.

  • ComboDrive - CDs suddenly won't mount but DVDs will, after updates

I have a 15" 1.5Ghz Powerbook, have had it for a year and a half and still have Applecare on it. All was working fine and dandy until I made the big mistake of doing a small software update - which updated Safari to 1.3.2 i think, iTunes from 6.0.1 to 6.0.2, and another thing called "Powerbook Aluminium" which apparently had something to do with the battery life counter. Anyway, subsequently to that (today), every CD that I put in the drive either gets spat out again, fails to eject or just doesn't mount. Not music not data not nothing. DVDs still work fine however, i've watched a film and inserted the Apple DVDs.
So now I'm confused... if DVDs still work is the drive broken? Or do I need to put in new drivers or what. This is just frustrating as I listen to all of my CDs on my powerbook. I had an Audio CD in during the update which then could not be seen afterwards. Any clues?
    Thanks

CDs and DVDs use 2 different optical subsystem: It may happen that the CD part dies while the DVD part keeps working fine.
If you dare to, you might try to clean the drive's lenses with compressed air - standard lens cleaner disks can't be used on slot in drives.

  • Contribute CS4 suddenly won't connect, but it did before...

I just re-designed and launched a website for my client, who used Contribute CS4 to edit the old site, and now for some reason when they open Contribute and click on "connect", they get this error:
"This error (HTTP 404 Not Found) means that this program was able to connect to the website, but the page you wanted was not found. It's possible that the webpage is temporarily unavailable. Alternatively, the website might have changed or removed the webpage."
For the life of me, I cannot figure out why they could connect to their server before, and not now.  When I try to make a connection to their website in Contribute CS5, I enter in the FTP info and I get the error:
"Unknown host. Contribute can not find the server "ftp.spenardroadhouse.com" Please check your connection information or contact your administrator."
I know there isn't anything wrong with the web pages themselves, because I'm able to use Contribute to edit them when they are on my server instead of the client's server.  Also, I have no trouble connecting to the client's server using FTP in Dreamweaver.
Does anyone know why this is happening?  Help!

Hi, we are currently experiencing this issue while maintaining a list of +75 connections in Contribute. We are using a CPS server to maintain user/connection information.
Reinstalling is not really a good option since it takes about 3 hours before all the connections are back up.
How can you explain that for on connection it's working fine, while for some others not, while using EXACTLY the same FTP information??

  • Movie DVDs won't mount but game, etc, DVDs will

I have two eMacs that are virtually identical and were purchased on the same day at the same location. One of them has no problem with any DVDs, of any kind be they movie, game or system. The other eMac accesses game and system DVDs but when a movie DVD is inserted, I get a message that "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer". Just what do I need to do to get the "idiot" eMac to read movie DVDs?

Try clicking your Apple and then choose System Preferences and then choose CD-DVD and when this opens up see what you have selected when inserting a Commercial DVD Movie. it should open the DVD Player.
You might also try to download VLC and see if it will play it.

  • .DMG files won't mount on desktop nor will my iPods

My iPod classic won't mount on my desktop, nor can I get the iTunes .dmg file (or any .dmg file for that matter) to mount on my desktop. My iPod has worked fine for years. Now it won't mount on my desktop but it'll charge just fine. It used to automatically launch iTunes when I plugged it into the USB port, but now it won't. And when I launch iTunes, iTunes doesn't recognize it at all so I can't sync. I've tried restarting my computer, upgrading iTunes, switching USB ports and restoring my iPod. Still nothing. I don't think the problem is with my iPod, I think it's my computer. Because I just bought a brand new iPod Shuffle yesterday (because I thought my old iPod was dead) and the brand new Shuffle won't mount on my desktop either and won't automatically launch iTunes and iTunes doesn't recognize it at all to sync it. (I checked and my iTunes is up-to-date.)

Well, now I can't get it to safe boot. I've done it before, no problem but it won't work, now. I restarted, holding the Shift key, and it never would start after 10 minutes or so but the fan just kept getting louder and louder. I tried it 3 times. Then I tried booting from the Disk Warrior CD and it took 3 tries before it finally booted off the CD—I would hold the C key and it would just sit there and not start up and all of the sudden the restart gong would go off, I'd still hold the C key and it did this 3 times before it finally started from the Disk Warrior CD.
Did you want me to try moving those files off to the desktop even though I can't restart in safe boot or run disk utility?
I'm gonna call it a night for now. Maybe I can try the safe boot again tomorrow. How long do you think I should hold down the shift key before I give up?
    Thanks again!
