Shuffle Won't Shuffle and Only Plays Sometimes

Help! I received a Shuffle for my birthday last month. I've charged it and loaded it, but it only plays once in a while and won't play at all when on the shuffle model. I've tried updating and upgrading, but it still only works every once in a while! I have a road race on sunday and desperately need to have music!
Thanks.
Penny

Hi Anne! Thanks alot. I've been meaning to send mine back too, but just haven't gotten the chance yet. I've been able to get it to play more often than not, but the songs will only play in order and the shuffle often stops for no reason and starts at the beginning of my play list again. I was so happy to get the shuffle so am really bummed it isn't working.
Good luck and please do keep me posted!

  • HT203167 I pre-ordered and downloaded Justin Timberlake's 20/20 Experience album through iTunes, but the only file I see is an LP which opens up a special screen and only plays 1 song (Mirrors). Where can I find the rest of my album?!

How do I find the rest of the songs from Justin Timberlake's new album? I preordred it-it is listed in my purchases on itunes, but the only thing listed on my "music" is the album title that opens a special screen and only plays mirrors!

Step by step, how did you arrive at seeing this agreement?

  • I have a new 160GB iPod Classic. I often listen to it for many hours at a time. Even with Itunes and the Classic set on shuffle it repeats songs often and only plays a small fraction of my songs. Help!            of my

When listening for hours to my new Clasic 160 with several thousand songs and both itunes and the Classic set to shuffle all songs it only plays a small fraction of my library and plays many songs several times over that period. It also seems to pick a small different group of songs to repeat without touching many of most of my songs each time I start listening. Over 98% of the music is legally owned in my CD collection. A few are down loads which play! There should be no issues with ownership. Please help. As much as I like all my tunes I want to actually hear them all. There are many many albums that have never been played.

Okay, well we've eliminated a couple of things.
One thing I have noticed about the iPod Classic: I suspect that "shuffle" is actually a Playlist, not a real shuffle. The Classic is not as powerful as iTunes or a desktop/computer, so it cannot truely "shuffle songs". I suspect what happens is that every Sync of the Classic with its iTunes Library causes a revised "shuffle playlist" to be put on the iPod and then, when you choose Shuffle play, it actually uses that special hidden "shuffle playlist".
So one trick is to Sync your iPod with iTunes frequently. This would change the "shuffle playlist". Another trick would be to create your own Playlists, either by adding what you want to a Regular Playlist or by creating a Smart Playlist which adds and removes songs by itself.
Smart Playlists: for example, you can create a Smart Playlist (in iTunes) which contains a random selection of all songs, or a random selection of a particular group of songs, provided the song has not been played for a period of time, say six months, or 300 days. Every Sync of the iPod with iTunes would remove any song from that Smart Playlist if it has been played. That same song cannot go back into the Playlist for a period of six months, or whatever you choose.
This way, you can reduce the likelyhood of hearing the same songs too often. This brings me to another point. If you have the same song, on different albums, then it's possible that you are hearing that same song but from both albums.
Try this: in your iTunes Library,
look for and click on the big + button and choose New Smart Playlist..., if you do not have the Sidebar displayed, switch to the Playlists view where you will find it in the bottom left corner,
Set it up to look like this:
It creates a list of songs that have not been played for fifteen weeks. It excludes videos and in my iTunes Library, it has 527 songs in it. If you would like a smaller list than that, click on the Limit to and fill in the number of songs you want.
Having set it up, play some songs from it (in shuffle mode if you wish) and watch how it changes . The song must play through to the end of the track before it is classed as "played". If you like it, let it go onto your iPod. You could set up a few Playlists, each with their own rules. Even if a song appears in two different Smart Playlists, if you have the "last played is not in the last" rule in both lists, then playing the song will eliminate it from both lists. None of this removes songs from the iPod (unless you use Sync selected Playlists...).

  • Ipod shuffle syncs all music but only plays-back MPEG audio

My iPod shuffle syncs all the music I specify but will not play-back AAC files!!  It will only play-back MPEG audio files. Is anyone else having the same issue?  Have restored it numerous times and tried fewer files / more files but no joy.  The voiceover just says "please sync with iTunes"

  • My iPhone 4 will not play music. It shuffles through album artwork and a play symbol icon appears by my battery percentage icon. How do I fix this?

I have just had this problem recently and I thought it worked itself out but would only play one song this morning. All help is greatly appreciated, Thanks.

While the music app is on, press and hold the sleep/wake button until the red slide to power off things comes. Without sliding the bar, press and hold the home button until the app quits.
Also clear the music app from multitasking-bar too. You may then try playing music.

  • I have just updated to iTunes 11. Now ALL my downloaded music has gone, and only plays when I'm connected to the internet.

NOT HAPPY.  I've Just upgraded to iTunes 11 on a MBP 15" 2009 model, OS 10.8.2 I use my computer all over the place with NO internet and cannot access the HUNDREDS of tracks I've purchased and downloaded and been playing for years. How can I access them WITHOUT having to download the all again, using up my internet for HOURS and gobbling up my BANDWIDTH again! Also, I am NOT INTERESTED in streaming my music, as most places I use my computer, I have very limited, or no internet. Not Happy!!!
PLEASE someone give me an easy low-cost answer to getting access to my music again.
Alternatively, is there a way to go back to the previous iTunes?
    Steve

Is the music actualy gone from your hard drive ?
If it is still there then under Preferences, Advanced Preferences is the iTunes Media folder location pointed in the right place? If not click on Change and repoint it to your files.
To Stop seeing all the icloud streaming versions again in Preferences, Store and uncheck the Show iTunes in the cloud purchases.
    Hope this helps

  • I exported a .mp4 in Premiere Pro CS4. It's 1 hr 40 min long and only plays properly for a half hour

    Hello,
I exported a video I edited in Premiere Pro which is 1 hour 40 mins long. It has some After Effects graphics, but they're imported as .movs. It plays fine for the first 1/2 hour, then after that it plays the appropriate sound while the picture stays the same. I tried restarting my computer, it still glitches. It's edited from two movs shot from the same camera. And it plays the last 10 minutes fine. I guess I should tell you that the source files I have (the movs) are 'corrupt,' I can't save them onto my external. I drag and drop them and a dialogue box says "unexpected error code 0" or something. Please let me know what info I should give you. Thank you for your time and replies.

  • New Shuffle makes loud pop and stops playing

My IPod shuffle will make a loud pop and then stop playing entirely. It always during the same song, and I'm not sure what's causing it. It seems to happen after syncing to recharge. Any advice is great. I was hoping this was a known problem, but I haven't seen anything about this yet.

  • Won't charge in Mini Cooper (Car) and only plays songs in alpha order

Yeah - this is lame. I got a nano for Christmas and replaced my old one (broke).
    1) It won't charge in my 2005 Mini Cooper (Car)
    2) It only plans songs in alpha order
I skip all over the place trying to listen to music. I've been all over chat rooms looking for a solution and can't find one.
Anyway - I read GeoChip is the answer to the charging problem. Any try it who doesn't work for GeoChip?
Also - anyone have a solution to the alpha order problem? I've tried ordering the songs (far left column), Apply Sort Field option, created a "Mini" folder with songs in it several times...

My Nano has issues with my 09 Cooper using the iPod/USB interface.
What are you using as an interface?
    What iTunes version ?

  • I pod classic 160gb skips tracks and will only play sometimes, i pod classic 160gb skips tracks and will only play sometimes

my i pod classic 160gb is reluctant to play stored tracks and then just keeps skipping tracks. have tried restoring settings and then syncing i tunes twice but still the same.

That is a different issue; the hard drive on your iPod is probably fine.
I seem to recall another post a while back in this forum, where the poster said that there seems to be a limit for the length of a single item on the iPod, and it is 24 hours.  Is that the "exact point in each book" that you observe?  If true (I have not confirmed), that may be a limitation of the software on the iPod.
If it is possible to purchase audiobooks that are broken into shorter segments (as an option), that may be a work-around.  iTunes will still treat it as one book, for syncing, but the segments would be like songs in an album.
If you would like to continue discussing your different problem, it would be best to create a new topic instead of posting in this topic.  You can do so by going to the forum category

  • My Iphone 4s says connected to TV and will not let me watch any videos on Safari, and only plays sound through the device. I have not messed with the settings, and have not connected it to anything bluetooth either. It's update is IOS 6.1.3

I have an Iphone 4S and It won't let me watch videos on my safari, which I do everyday. It says that I am connectef to a tv, yet I have not connected it to a tv during the entire time i've owned this product. I have not connected it to anything bluetooth either. It plays the sound through the device, but it will not play the video at all. the update is IOS 6.1.3

Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.
    - Next try the manual install method of:
iDevice Troubleshooting 101 :: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Place the iPod in recovery mode after the firmware download is complete and then restore using the instructions in the article. Sometimes recovery mode timeouts and returns to disabled before the firmware download is complete.
    - Then try on another computer

  • Shuffle won't shuffle

I have a Shuffle that has stopped shuffling.
When I move the switch to the shuffle position, it plays in order.
My shuffle is over a year old, so I can't return it.
I have reloaded the OS but the problem persists.
Anyone else have this problem and come up with a resolution?
I think it's a problem with the switch.
    Terry
    Shuffle   Windows XP

Seeing as how it's out of warranty and you think it's a switch problem, then you might consider trying some of the following.
Try, as a first step, cleaning the switch itself:
    A. With the switch in SHUFFLE, press PAUSE and wait for the unit to power down/sleep. This takes about a minute.
    B. Now pop off the switch cover. You can do that by gentle prying with the tip of a sharp knife blade (X-Acto works nicely).
    C. Look at the orientation of everything, then try a few gentle spritzes of CRC or some other electronic cleaner into the opening there.
    D. Replace the switch cover and work everything back and forth a few times. You should have come out of sleep mode in the middle of all this, so see if the switch is working better now.
If it isn't, you could try repeating the process or you can get more aggressive. Short of actual disassembly and working on the switch (not recommended for most), and assuming you're not willing to just live with the situation and do your shuffling in iTunes before loading the Shuffle, then just give it a few moderately sharp raps against a tabletop or some such, trying a variety of angles/orientations. You're basically just hoping to knock that little bit of snarth out of the Shuffle's felvin and, hey, it might work ....

  • My Shuffle Won't Shuffle

I have a Shuffle that will play just fine in the "play in order" position, but when I switch to the "shuffle songs" position, nothing happens (no light, no sound). I tried restoring it, but I got the same results. Does anyone have any suggestions? Of course, it is out of warranty!

Restoring will fix firmware faults, but not hardware ones. You may simply have a defective slide switch and, if so, replacement is your best option.
Note that when I say 'defective' I'm not automatically assuming a manufacturing defect; it's equally likely that this is due to some liquid getting in, some other foreign object, a result of being dropped ..... whatever. We aren't talking about a pre-existing fault on a brand-new machine here.
As it's out of warranty, though, you have limited options. A good solution is to simply not use that mode and decide not to worry about it. Try that for a while first and see if you can live with it.
If you can't, then you can always get more aggressive with it. I'd pop the slide switch off (easy to do with the point of a sharp cutting blade) and then try a small suction tip applied right there, maybe with a bit of shaking and gentle rapping going on. Maybe I'd also give it the barest spritz of CRC or equivalent before replacing the switch cover plate, after which I'd exercise the switch a few times.
Or maybe you could just give it a few short, sharp raps against something sort of hard. Just on the sides, though, not on the front face. That might get the snarth out of your felvin. You'll know if you've done this one too hard, though.

  • Ipod shuffle won't shuffle

My Ipod shuffle plays on regular mode, but simply cuts off and refuses to play on shuffle mode. I tried to clear it and update it but it still doesn't play at all on shuffle mode. Any ideas?

    a) If under warranty, just replace it. If not, then either
    b) Learn to live with it, do all of your track shuffling in iTunes or use it more for podcasts or use it more as a flash drive, or
    c) Fix it yourself, but that's a bad idea for almost everyone, so
    d) Replace it with a new one, or maybe a refurb from Apple, or maybe a 'broken' one off of eBay if you can confirm that the one you're interested in is coming from a Windozer and is exhibiting the "dread A/G blinkies of death".
