Shufflilng by genre

I have a 20GB Ipod. I listen to many different kinds of music and would like to be able to pick a genre then shuffle the songs. As it is now, if I pick shuffle songs it shuffles all the songs on the Ipod. In the settings it looks like I can sort by artist or song, but I would like to sort by genre. Is this possible?
Thanks
Dell Dimension 4600   Windows XP

go to settings and put the shuffle is for songs, then go to the genre you want to play the go into it and press the play/ pause button on the all category and it should shuffle the songs in that genre

  • How can multiple files for the same genre be consolidated

I organize my iTunes files in genre folders for easy access. ITunes creates multiple folders for some genres and allows a single (preferred) genre file for other much larger files. How can I consolidate multiple files with the same genre?

Thanks. I've done what you selected. The problem is that despite all files being identified with the same genre, iTunes groups some genres in two separate folders. Thus, I have two "Country" folders, for example. More perplexing is that iTunes groups my largest genre folder, "Jazz", in a single folder.

  • Renaming and/or adding genres in iTunes

I am organizing my albums in the recently updated iTunes and wish to (1) add some new genres and (2) rename some of the genres currently listed.
    Is either possible?
    Thanks!

There are a number of predefined genres, the rest are those entered in the tags of your files. Open the songs view with column browser and turn on the Genres column. Find a genre you want to remove or merge with another. Click on it to show all the files with that genre. Select all & Get info. Type in the updated value for the Genre. Click OK. Repeat until finished....
If you want to edit the list of available genres still left after clearing any that are stored in your tags, see this article.

  • Same genre appears twice in my iPhone 5s.

Why does the same genre (Alternative) appear twice in my iPhone 5s. Both Genre listings in the phone show the same # of songs and minutes.
    What I've done thus far:
    1. removed "Alternative" genre from all songs in music library
    2. synced iPhone and both Alternative Genre we removed on iPhone under Genres
    3. made sure the Genre spelling on all songs is correct and the same in iTunes
    4. re-synced iPhone and again both Genres Alternative appear.
    Then tried this:
    2. connected iPhone to iTunes, went to iTunes / iPnone > settings > music and verified under "Genres" that Alternative only appears once in the Genres section
    3. on the iPhone settings > music > insured "Show All Music" was turned off
    4. on the iPhone settings > iTunes & App Store insured "Show All" > music was turned off
    5. unchecked Sync Music and selected remove all music then synced iPhone, verified all music and all Genres on the iPhone were removed
    6. ejected iPhone did a hard reset on iPhone verified both "Alternative" Genres were deleted.
    7. connected iPhone to iTunes, went to iTunes / iPnone > settings > music and re-selected Sync Music and synced
    8. STILL TWO LISTINGS OF ALTERNATIVE GENRE ON IPHONE AND HAS THE SAME # OF SONGS AND MINUTES.
    * note no other Genres have duplicate listings and there are a total of 9 other Genres. Of those 3 are custom names.
    Help please...
    Thank you in advance.

Is the phone unlocked and available to you? Have you notified your carrier of this change?

  • How to add MP3's and choose Genre, album, artist?

    Hello,
the way I have been adding MP3's is by adding the folder but then it does not offer me a choice as to which genres, album or artist it is going under? Example. I have bought some books on cd in the mp3 format, And I would like to be able to edit the info just like I would on a audio cd before it is imported.
Wonder what I need to do?
    Best Regards, Dan

  • Multiple Artist, Genre... Separator (Semi-Colon) instead of Smart Playlists

In my opinion, one of the greatest features of ID3 tags is the ability to use semi-colons to differentiate between multiple artists, genres, albums, etc... for any given field. This feature has been available since ID3 tags for MP3's were first implemented over a decade ago.
With Windows Media Player 10, it's database was finally able to parse the information separated by semi-colons correctly. What this means is that if I have a song like "Picture" by Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock, in the ID3 tag, I type "Sheryl Crow; Kid Rock", and in WMP, if I click on Artist | Sheryl Crow, "Picture" appears. And if I click on Artist | Kid Rock, "Picture" appears. In fact, when I rip songs using WMP, it places semi-colons in numerous ID3 fields from the album description.
In iTunes, however, when I import a song with a semi-colon in an ID3 tag field, the database reads the artist as "Sheryl Crow; Kid Rock", or essentially, it treats "Sheryl Crow; Kid Rock" as a THIRD artist. The same is true if I have a song that I feel crosses two genres--like "Picture". In WMP, if I put in the Genre field "Pop; Country", when I choose Genres | Pop, "Picture" appears, and when I choose Genres | Country, "Picture" appears.
Does anyone know if a bug fix for this is in the works for iTunes? It seems Apple and iTunes have been trying to push Smart Playlists for this kind of organization, but that's the poor man's way of organizing songs and not nearly as efficient. I don't want to have to create Smart Playlist for all songs with "Sheryl Crow" in the artist field. It should be inherent based on the semi-colon.
Does anyone know if anything smarter than Smart Playlists is in the works that matches the intuitiveness of Windows Media Player's database?
    Thanks,
    Bill

Whereas in WMP & the ID3 spec. you would use a semi-colon to separate items you will find that iTunes & the Music store use a slash instead. However as you so rightly say iTunes takes the information and construes a new artist entity rather than two artists connected to the same track. (WMP might also respond to slash - I recall AC/DC always presenting issues so they exist as AC-DC in my library.)
If you'd like to make feature request go to: iTunes Feedback.
Working on the assumption that such ideas are unlikely to implemented any time soon however you might like to see my post on Grouping Tracks Into Albums which covers workarounds for this & other quirks.

  • MediaSource sub-windows for Album/Artist/Genre have gone

My wife's Zen Micro (2--02) doesn't seem able to have its music organised by Creative MediaSource Explorer.
I'm sure that MediaSource used to display not only the tracks but had little sub-windows where you could select Album, Artist or Genre and get all the tracks associated with your choice.
However, all that I get now is a list of filenames. OK, I can click on these to get the next folder level which seems to be the album name, then further click to get to the track(s).
What I can't do is get the thing to list all tracks or all albums or all genres. It's just hopeless.
MediaSource, as I say, used to show little sub-windows when I had my Zen Xtra but now my wife's Zen Micro's been added and everything upgraded, these sub-windows for Album and Artist do not appear as they do in the illustration with the blurb...not even with my Zen Xtra.
Further, the Zen Micro doesn't seem to have a list of selected tracks like my Xtra does. The help files seem to refer to one but I'm blowed if I can find it, either via my PC or via the player's own display.
How do you see what's coming up next to play?
Everything's upgraded to the latest using Auto update and I re-loaded the f/w.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, please?

In the bar above the list of tracks there should be a Find box. Next to this is a View button, next to that is a small downward triangle which, when clicked, allows you to select Genre, Album, Artist. Play around with those 2 buttons and you should be able to get back the view you want.
To view the selected tracks click on View in the menu bar and then choose Now Playing Window.

  • ITunes 6.0.1.3 and Genre changes

I have read through a bunch of threads but did not see a response to the following (hence the new post).
I just went through my libary in iTunes and changes genres across all of my music to what i felt was proper. Now, every time I play a song in iTunes, it changes it back to what it thinks it should be. I have changed the genre back many many times and iTunes continues to change it back. I have confirmed that I have full access to the file.
Am I doing something wrong when using the 'Get Info' dialog ad changing the Genre of a music file? Is iTunes actually changing it at the file level or just in memory? I cannot tell you how irritating this is. Just for an example, I changes a Madonna song from Blues (which iTunes keeps labelling it as) to 'Club', but each time I play that song, or any other in that album, it reverts back to 'Blues'.
    Arghhhhhh !
Any help and guidance would be appreciated, including advice to dump using iTunes as a player and just using it to sync my iPod.
    Thanks.

an update in case someone can help me figure out iTunes and this issue. I looked at the file directly, and (in the case of the Madonna MP3), confirmed at that level that the Genre was marked as 'Blues'. I went into iTunes, changed it to 'Club', closed iTunes and looked at the file again. Seems that iTunes did not update the tag.
Thinking this may be a fie issue, I open up Media Player, grab the same some, change the tag to 'Club', close the player and check the file. Low and behold, Media Player was able to change it.
So to further narrow the scope of my question, does anyone know why iTunes can't push the change at the file level?

  • Ios 6 music app on ios 7 (to fix genre issue)

I am no longer able to drill down from genre to artists songs in the genre and their albums with songs in that genre.  Apple has told me that is by design.  So I have lost that ability and some others here have said the same thing.
Is there a way to find and use the ios 6 music app under ios 7 somehow?  Else, I need to find a 3rd party app that will play the existing music (I don't want to download anything outside of itunes) and allow me to drill down from genre as ios 6's music app allowed me to do.
Any suggestions (incl. possible apps if I can't use ios 6 music app)?

I use, by the way, the windows app Tag & Rename.  Have been using it for years and highly recommend it if you are on the windows platform.  In order to get things to work properly I had to change tags in two ways for ios 7: (1) copy all my artist fields to album artists fields and (2) (unfortunately) pull out the data in the year field (which I moved to the comment field) since ios 7 now sorts by the year field as well.
That got the ios 7 music player to final list the stuff properly - at least as I drilled down from genre.  Still, the interface was at a minimum "wanting".  I found an inexpensive (not free) app - I think it was something like $3.99.  It was written and supported by two programmers - a 18 and 21 year old.  Still the interface is relatively clean and the gestures once learned make things easy to find out and change with a single finger - check it out: "Ecoute".  It does the job for me much better then ios 7's.
My only complaint is since I do not have album art or any other art associated with music as I am a composer and write my own material - I end up with 5 rows and 3 columns of icons with default icons.  But even that has an 'option' as you can get a textual list by taping on the top.  If you are at genres and the artist is showing, tapping on the top will list all the tracks in alphabetical order with times for that artist. If the albums are showing in the screen - tapping on the artist on the top will display all the tracks in alphabetical order with a line below them describing the album name.  And when you tap just on the album icon, you get just a list of the tracks.
Some other cool tapping and swiping actions....  easy to learn...

I clicked on FILE>DISPLAY DUPLICATES, Just to see what this feaure was. it changed my page to something that i did not like. I am trying to figure out how to get my itunes VIEW to what it was BEFORE i clicked on the DISPLAY DUPLICATES. My page before looked like: as follows (columns from LEFT TO RIGHT) showed:

Now the screen: COLUMN 1) JUST LISTS THE ALBUMNS NAME (EACH ALBUMN ONCE, ALL THE WAY DOWN THE COLUMN. The large text size makes your post almost impossible to read.
Excessive use of bold or capitals (also) makes posts difficult to read.
You can drag most of the column headings left or right, or right-click on the header to turn columns on or off.
Once you've used File > Display Duplicates or Shift > File > Display Exact Duplicates you can use File > Display All or the Display All button at the bottom of the list to restore the display.

  • Custom Genre Not Showing Up In Apple's Music App [02/20/2015]

    Hello, I have the iPad mini 2 Model: A1489 16GB @ iOS 8.1.3
I have made 2 custom genres that show up just fine in the Genres tab with every song belonging to these respectable genres. I also have 'Instrumental' and 'Piano' genres that I'm not sure if qualifies as custom genres, but they work well too.
However, my latest custom genre 'A Cappella' is not showing up with the rest of the genres. The 1 album that I have for this genre shows up in the Albums tab and the songs show up in the Songs tab. The album also shows up after selecting the artist in the Artists tab, but does not show up in Genres.
There are 2 songs in this genre, but they are my favorite and I want to be able to get to them quickly. ^.^
The genre does show up in iTunes, Windows Media Player, and the Meta Data is all there when I look at the properties of the files. I can't seem to find out what other differences the working genres' and the non-working genre's songs have except that they have different genres.
Every song on my Ipad has the same Artist. <<<<(If that helps....)
Thank you for your help, whoever helps.

This may be an issue with the ID3 tag format standards and Apple can't change those. But you can ask:

  • Find Remix Jam Pack loops not labeled by Genre in loop browser?

I've got all four Apple Jam Packs installed.
The World and Symphony jam packs are great, as I can locate the loops in the loop browser by Genre.
But the Rhythym and Remix jam packs don't seem to be labeled by Genre.
How can I identify them? There are way too many to just look and see what seems to be new or find them by trial and error.
Even the EXS24 instruments had to be moved to separate folders by hand to separate them from the other Garage Band instruments (but I could separate them from the others by date, so I figured out a way).
Frustrating to have installed a new product, and be unable to find it!

    Hi Les,
I haven't used the loop browser much in Logic, but I know that it is very similar to the one in Garageband. If it's pretty much the same browser, then there will be a way to filter your search by "packages." For example, you can select the Remix jam pack and select loops just from it's collection.
I'm not on my Logic computer, so I'll test this later...

  • How do I stop i-tunes from changing the genres for my songs without my consent?

Lately, itunes has been taking the genres I've set for my songs and changing them without my consent or say so.  I change them back to what I want, i-tunes changes it back to what it wants, etc..
For example, I might list something as "Rock", but i-tunes decides it's "Pop" or "Alternate Rock" and edits my file's meta-data unilaterally.  I might decide I want a category called "Christmas Music", but i-tunes decides the genre is "Holiday Music".  I even have a few songs labeled "Urban", and i-tunes tries to change them to "Hip-Hop/Rap" or "Rap/Hip-hope".  I took a lot of time with my large music collection to get this stuff exactly the way I wanted it- simplified.  I-tunes is screwing it up.
This is *my* music.  I even bought it all legally on a limited budget.  I get to decide what genre I want it listed as.
Is there a setting or something I can change to get i-tunes to stop messing my music genre data?  Or do I have to find a new music player?
I've got a long suffering ipod classic I was thinking of replacing at some point, but I may leave the i-tunes ecosystem entirely over this instead.  To make things worse, my ipod with it's troubled syncing and broken buttons now has to deal with constantly recopying files with new genres every time I sync and itunes or I have changed something in our constant man versus machine battle- just try have hundreds of songs recopied each time without an error on something that barely can handle normal syncing after reconnecting 10 times or so every sync because it doesn't take the first 9 times.
I don't want to fight my music player.  I just want the thing to work and do what I instruct it to do.  Either that or I'm going to have to rename it "HAL" and start calling myself "Dave" ala 2001: A Space Odessy.  Because this thing seems to be turning on me.

Ugh.  I thought I was exagerating when I said song name changes were next.  Apparently, I was literally correct.  I haven't seen it yet personally, but Tooltomus says he has.
I thought the genre changes had stopped, only to see that they'd started up again a few minutes ago.  This is getting really old really fast.
Again, why does Apple seem to think it can do whatever it wants to our bought and paid for music without our permission?  This isn't about interface changes or whatever, which are all well within their rights, but to actually alter our files themselves without asking or even notifying us.  They've got to be kidding...  Isn't there some way to turn this off?
Why are they doing this?  What's the point of it?  Is it intentional or some kind of bug?  Is anyone from Apple going to bother to even tell us?
I feel like I had some great music software and a great music player.  I've used them for hours every day for years.  I really love smart playlists and a whole bunch of features.  It's very upsetting to see them go in this direction.
You know, record companies and music sellers have been pushing the idea of legally purchased files for years, saying it's just the same as CDs or whatever.  And I've been dutifully buying my files this whole time from various legal sellers instead of pirating them.  And now they're basically doing the equivalent of breaking into my home and messing around with my CDs- scrobbling all over the covers and album booklets, etc..
Why even have a genre setting the user can change if the program is going to keep overriding it and change genres?  Why even have a song setting the user can change if the program is going to keep overriding it and change song titles?  What happens when the program gets something wrong?
Anyone know how to turn this off?  Would going back to itunes 10 help or is this coming from the server to every version of itunes?  Is there other music player software that will leave my music alone that will preserve my playcounts, ratings, playlists, last played, and so on and so forth, and support syncing to my ipod?  Can I somehow cut itunes off from contacting apple's servers to look up information and make these changes?

  • Itunes match; a) if incorrect genre etc data has been uploaded to icloud, cannot delete it or replace the track/ data b) now have 9k tracks "stuck" in icloud and cannot delete them no matter what I do. eh?

    Hi
I;m having so itunes match issues.
I ran itunes match. I';ve since foumd, I think:
    a) if incorrect genre etc data has been uploaded to icloud, I cannot find how to delete it and reupload correct song and data. I am presently assuming that once songs are matched, the meta-data, genre, etc etc thats uploaded is now treated as 'the master' by itunes.
Question: if I want to change the genre on a track, whats the correct way to overwrite the data held in the icloud? if I delete the track i just bring down the old incorrect genres again!
    b) I've deleted from the icloud all my music tracks (select all, delete, Y to delete tracks from icloud). I have turned off itunes match on my ipad, iphone, appletv mac and windows pc. I've deleted the itunes library files too from mac and pc in desperation. But hours /days later, when I turn on itunes match on mac or pc, it tells me i still have 9k tracks in icloud. All with the old, wrong meta-data ready to mess up my [now-corrected]  files back on my pc!
I cannot delete them no matter what I do. The number of tracks in the cloud was 12k, now 9k so its reducing, by about 1500 tracks a day.
does it really take itunes servers that long to delete the tracks I've asked it to delete, or am i seeing garbage data?
is there a quicker way of deleting all my itunes match library, songs and data?

    Thanks for the helpful replies.
My original intention was to 'upgrade' some of my tracks. In those cases, I'd iTunes matched, and the process was completed.
I later downloaded those new tracks but found during that process, the tracks I was downloading had the old metadata.
I guess the idea there is to update the local genres, 'update iTunes match' and wait. How long, I don't know but that's the current solution, yes ?
Thing is I was trying to get my local library updated and, as I thought it, back in order, but was finding my local genre updates were being overwritten. I had a lot of tracks that kept on stating they could be downloaded so I thought the new files hadn't been copied down...
I think I was trying to get match to do too many things at once.
Deleting my tracks in the cloud? Was an act of desperation to start over with all known good genres locally and to re- upload, start over. I'd read in some forum or other to do that, I guess that was wrong,
    Ok so I will.. Err,
A  wait and see how long it takes to delete my tracks in the cloud ie let it complete the process I'd already started.
B  Correct my local tracks genres
C  Wait til those changes propagate up to the iCloud ( or whatever the right term is)
Q1: How long should I wait for A and C to complete?
Q2: Is it 100% definite that local genre changes will get copied up to the cloud, when I 'update iTunes match'?
I don't see any animated cloud icon, but I will watch for it!
    Thanks again
    Iain
