Shuffling songs in playlists - again

I must be missing something. I select Settings/Shuffle and set Shuffle to 'Songs'. But when I select Music/Playlists/ 'My playlist' it just presents me with as list of songs for me to select. How do I get the automatic random selection to occur?
Thanks

Thanks, Jeff. I had seen the article but i couldn't figure out why I still couldn't get the shuffle to work. And then I realised that having selected the playlist I needed to press Play and not Select. I felt pretty silly...

Storage space on the iPod would not affect shuffled playlists or playlist shuffling, though substantially full iPods may wind up skipping songs on larger playlists after a while, and require a restart.  As for compressing the files themselves, you can automatically re-encode files to a lower bitrate by checking the box on the summary page when your iPod is connected to your PC/Mac.
As for the shuffle problem, after restarting your iPod (hold the center button and Menu for a few seconds, until the Apple logo appears), make sure you're telling the iPod to shuffle the songs in a playlist by repeatedly clicking the center button until the Suffle Menu comes up, then scroll to the right to turn it on.  From that song forward, the playlists' contents should be shuffled every time the playlist ends, or is accessed from a new song.
Shuffle does sometimes turn itself off, I've found, so double-check the setting is still on.  Also, iPods shuffle by randomly assigning a playlist order for your songs, which is different from traditional shuffle (on, say, iTunes or Windows Media Player, where the new song is determined at random upon the current track ending.  The iPod only chooses a random order of songs when you shuffle, to conserve battery life and queue up songs coming up on the playlist in the event of a shock).

  • How do I shuffle songs within Playlists?

I'm new at this. How do I shuffle songs within each individual playlist?
So far I only know how to shuffle when I'm not using a playlist.

    lol
Don't worry about it. I have read original posts wrong and have tried troubleshooting a different issue than the person was having. After about the 5th or 6th reply, I'll read something that doesn't make sense (in relation to the problem), go back, and realize my BIG mistake!

  • Shuffle songs from playlist only

Is is possible to only shuffle from a playlist and not the complete ipod library ?
    Thanks

To turn on shuffle in settings, go to Settings-->Shuffle and set it to Songs.
Then, as Wesler said, go to the main menu, go to Music-->Playlists, scroll to the playlist you want to shuffle, and click Play.

  • Shuffle songs on playlists!

How do I get my indivdual playlists to shuffle? The only option I seem to have under shuffling songs is the entire library.... help!

    Right.
    Select songs. (settings-->shuffle-->songs)
Now go back to the main menu and go to music-->playlists. Scroll to the playlist you want and hit play. That playlist will now shuffle.
Know that the shuffle on the main menu will always shuffle everything.

  • Shuffling songs in playlists

I have an iPod mini and I am wondering whether I can shuffle the songs in a playlist. If it is possible, can someone tell me how?

Go to settings/shuffle and set it so "songs". Now select a playlist and hit play. All the songs with in that playlist will be shuffled.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Go to settings-->shuffle and set it to songs.
Then go to music-->playlists. When the playlist you
want to shuffle is highlighted, hit play.

btabz: Thank you thank you thank you. I searched through most of the Apple tutorials for clarification on this issue; they sometimes are quite poorly written. You saved me a lot of headache.

  • Problem with shuffling tracks within playlists

I'm having trouble shuffling songs within playlists.  I have an iPhone 5s with iOS 8.1.2.
If I open a playlist and press 'Shuffle' (or the Shuffle icon) above the first song, nothing happens--the playlist will not play, and I'm unable to play any of the individual songs within the playlist (the songs in the list will gray-out briefly when clicking on them).
If I start a playlist and try shuffling from the 'Now Playing' screen, only the current song will play.  For example, I hit 'Shuffle'--"Shuffle All' is highlighted but '1 of 41' becomes '1 of 1.'  If I then hit 'Shuffle All," '1 of 1' becomes '0 of 0.'
Thus far, the only way I can shuffle a playlist is to ask Siri to do it (and she doesn't always understand the playlist names).
Am I doing something wrong, or is there a bug here?
    Thanks.

It seems to occur more frequently lately. You can still add songs by right-click < Add to Playlist, although this is not as convenient as drag-n-drop. Hopefully it will get fixed soon.

  • Ipod classic only shuffling some songs in playlist

i have 655 songs in a playlist but ipod only shuffles 165 of the songs. i've set ipod to shuffle under settings and then once the playlist is highlighted i hit play. only 165 songs are listed and only 165 will shuffle. if i turn off the shuffle feature ipod will play all 655 songs by album, but i'd like the ipod to skip around and not play the albums sequentially. any ideas?

Check the songs in your library. Under *File/Get Info/Options* is a tick-box called *Skip when shuffling.* Is there a tick in the box? If so, turn it off.
Check this for one song. If that is the problem, you can then highlight all the songs in the playlist and go to the *File/Get Info/Options* (iTunes will ask if you wish to edit multiple entries - yes, you do!). When editing multiple items, for some reason the *Skip when shuffling* tick-box will also have a drop-down menu box. Even if it says No, (which it did when I tested this) select Yes, _then change it back_ to No and click OK.
Sync your iPod and try the playlist again. When you play the first song in the playlist (on shuffle) does the display now say 1 of 655? It should.

  • My ipod starts voicing song data, artist data, and playlist data while I am listening to music.  Is this a feature or a defect?  I do not know why it occurs, but the only way to stop it is to stop the music then play the playlist again.

To make sure voiceover is off, you need to go to summary screen then click the "Configure Universal Access" button. Then you will get a dialog where you can make sure voiceover is off. All of the boxes in the dialog should be unchecked.

  • I updated my iPod/iTunes software and now I can't get it to shuffle songs in a playlist; it either shuffles albums in a playlist or songs on the whole iPod

I updated my iPod/iTunes software and now I can't get it to shuffle songs in a playlist; it either shuffles albums in a playlist or songs on the whole iPod, neither of which is what I want to do.  How do I get it to shuffle songs in just one playlist?

The shuffle setting in the main menu will shuffle through the entire library as you have found out.
You need to go to settings>shuffle this will toggle through off/song/album. Once you have set this it will stay the same until you change the setting.
Now when you start playing a song in a playlist the iPod will shuffle through that playlist (or if you select your song through artist then it will shuffle through all the songs for that artist etc)

  • How can you shuffle songs in a playlist in itunes 11?

You used to be able to create a playlist, shuffle it, then synch it to your ipod.  This was done easily with a shuffle button in the library.  In 11 that button is no longer there.  How can you do this now?

Your question is clear, but you then go on to say something completely different. I've answered your question "how can (you) shuffle songs in a Playlist in iTunes 11".
In Playlists, click on the "start playing in shuffle mode" icon (that I've ringed). And...
In this next shot (the space you need to watch), you can see the Shuffle icon (ringed in larey lime) is blue, so it's "on", and I've also clicked on the "show me what's coming up next" icon (ringed in red).  Study the list of upcoming songs. It's the Playlist we're in, but shuffled:
    Hey presto!
Now - if you actually mean something else, such as: "create the Playlist, adjust the order of the songs and then Sync it to the iPod"; then as before, you can drag songs within a Playlist to whatever order you want and Sync the Playlist - as before. I've no idea what the "button" you refer to, looked like. Can you explain?
