Shut down after 2 seconds?

Hey!
I recently came back from holiday and, after leaving my MacBook off for about a week, went to turn it back on. Pressed the button, optical drive made its noise, and then the whole thing shut down (with the HDD making that whistling sound as it slows down). It then refused to power up, with or without mains/battery in any combination.
I've attempted a P-RAM reset and SMC reset, but to no avail. Weirdly, though, if I leave it alone for a while, and then attempt to start it again, it may run for 3 or 5 seconds, but inevitably shuts down again even before the chime.
Has anyone else had such an issue, or does anyone have any idea as to what it may be? I fear my logic board may be dead, but I can't understand how that could have happened by not using it...
Any feedback greatly appreciated =]

because battery or no battery an issue with your power adapter could cause your issue.
Also when you try to turn it on dose the sleep light blink, and or do you hear a series of beeps? if so how many beeps?
if you do hear a series of beeps/ sleep light blinks. you might want to check out http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1547
let me know if this helps; or if you have any questions. the results of these trouble shooting steps could say allot about your issue.

  • MacBook Retina shuts down after a few seconds after every boot

    Hi there
My retina macbook keeps shutting down after booting and rebooting by its own a minute later. No error message is displayed or anything like it, it just magically shuts down.
It had been working fine until now but it seems to be going crazy for whatever reason...
When it shuts down by itself, I can't turn it on myself. It does it on its own even if the lid is closed and then shuts down again after about 30 seconds.
This only happens when it's connected to a power source (it doesn't even start when it's not).
I have tried to reset the PRAM without success.
The only time the issue doesn't happen is when I do a Safe Boot.
Can anybody tell me what is up with my Macbook (I really need it for work AND school).
    Thanks

  • Pse trial v12 installed but when opening the editor it shuts down after 2 seconds, what can be the problem? I have windows 8.1 64 bit with the latest video drivers installed. Thanks

PSE trial 12 installed just fine but when i start the editor it opens and shuts down after about 2 seconds without an error, the only thing that appears is a message with 'continue trial'.
I have windows 8.1 64 bit and i already installed the latest video drivers, intel hd 4000 and nvidia geforce 710M.
I also installed premiere elements version 12 with the same problem.
What can be the problem here, please help?
    Thanks.
    Wim.

    Hi roberto-
Yes, its a shame. I have also contacted lenovo support hoping that they can sort out this problem. However, first response from them was 'contact your internet service provider since internet connectivity goes down'! :-/ I am hoping I have been able to get through to them now at least about where the problem lies. I wonder if anyone has tried using the laptop with the same broadcom wireless adapter with some other version of OS (linux, windows 7 etc.) and whether they still face the same problem. I haven't tried that yet. If this is just an OS / driver issue I hope someone somewhere is working on a fix! If not, I guess the only other solution would be to get an external USB wifi adapter but that is not something one would want to do when you buy a brand new Lenovo laptop. This was a big let down for me.

  • AFTER UPDATE GREY SCREEN NO SOUND THEN SHUTS DOWN AFTER 30  SECONDS PLEASE HELP

AFTER UPDATE GREY SCREEN APPEARS WHEN POWER BUTTON PRESSED NO START UP SOUND THEN SHUTS DOWN AFTER 30  SECONDS AND REPEATS ITS SELF PLEASE HELP

As for now, only thing that helped was an archive and install with preserve user settings. Seems after the reinstall of 10.4. everything that was weird has become normal again. I hope very much this state stays on for a while - or ever!
A comment to everybody: with problems that are common you get a lot of help from friendly users in here, but if like in my situation things get a bit more uncommon than the usual querks and troubles your bound to go through a whole workflow of tests and algorithms - i did learn some new things but eventually I had to go for the ultimate - the reinstall (of course, erase and install would have been more work.) and it's frustrating not to find out how it came to this problem. I wish I could nail it down to something I did mistakenly - i guess I'll find out next time.
THANKS THOUGH to those who replied.

  • On starting up, my macbook pro shuts down after 25 seconds of booting up.

Hi there. On starting up, my macbook pro shuts down after 25 seconds of booting up. The time bar comes on for a while before it simply goes blank and switches off without any notification. Battery iappears charged. Could it be a virus? Help please!! O

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Toshiba Satellite A300-20T shuts down after 5 seconds!!

my laptop satellite A300-20T shuts down after 5 seconds of booting , i dont know why ?? and i searched for support in the website and didn't find it in the model list, also i don't know why ???!!
i want to know why it shuts down , and how can i communicate with support

Yours would not appear to be a US model. We need the Part Number for your laptop, like PSAG8U-05K02C. You can find this on the Toshiba label on the bottom of your laptop. As well, what country was it originally purchased in. In addition, what is your operating system version, like Windows Vista 32bit?

  • Mac mini shuts down after 10 seconds..

At first today, the CDs and discs kept automatically ejecting and wouldn't read (obviously). So I keep putting them back in hoping it would read or hold something. Then I restarted and the Mac Mini shuts down after 10 seconds of the seeing the desktop. Did I fry it? I did hear a weird sizzling when I put my hand on top of the mini. And is this under any warranty - I bought it Feb. 07? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Any thoughts on that?
One or two come to mind, not least that if the unit is under warranty now (as it clearly is) and they aren't taking this fault seriously, then buying AppleCare so it remains under warranty longer isn't the right solution - having them examine it and resolve the problem is.
There's no doubt at all that in the event there is a system with a suspected fault, extending the warranty long enough that the system ceases to function and can be repaired is a good thing, but it shouldn't be necessary to go to that extreme in order to get a problem resolved now!
I would simply take this elsewhere and have it looked at. While odd noises are sometimes hard to hear in an environment where there are people and other activities going on, and thus it is reasonable to expect diagnosis of them to prove difficult, a system that shuts down of its own accord after a few seconds is clearly not working correctly. To be sure, if it is overheating, then testing it when it's cold is likely to miss the problem, but the description of the fault from the user ought to give enough clues to put the system on test long enough to see what happens when it warms up. If the fault can't then be replicated with a system that is at normal running temperature and under load, then giving it a clean bill of health is reasonable.
Thus, in your place I would ask them if they did, in fact, test it in that way. Alternatively, write a description of the fault, specifically identifying the premature shutdowns and the circumstances in which they happen (if they still do) and the noises and the circumstances in which they occur (if they still do) and take the system and description to an approved service provider and let them look at it.
If the shutdowns are no longer occurring, and the noise is absent, then whether you buy AppleCare or not is really a matter of how confident you are that the problem has gone. If you have doubts that the system is running correctly, AppleCare is expensive but at least extends the warranty sufficiently that you can stop worrying too much. Alternatively, if the problem(s) still persist, rather than AppleCare, have the system examined and repaired right now.

  • Re: Satellite A105 shuts down after 60 seconds (NOT a thermal problem)

Satellite A105-s4344 shuts down after EXACTLY 60 seconds. The mobo has been removed from bezels and all un-needed devices removed (DVD, HDD, WiFI etc.). Swapped CPU and RAM with known good ones. Swapped AC adapter and battery with known good. Does the same on AC or DC only inputs.
I have not yet flashed the BIOS (with 60 seconds this would be foolish). But, I am looking into replacing or reflashing with an EEPROM burner. Currently has V 2.0
I am not sure what genration heat detecting this system uses, but it is a possible cause if it is one of the later generations (visit http://www.topbits.com/how-to-monitor-cpu-temperature.html if you do not know that I am refering to).
Prior to reballing the north and south bridge, and flashing I figured I would get some input from you folks. Just to cover all bases ;)
P.S. the first person to ask what OS I am using will get an instant ticket to the bottom of my respect list.

    >P.S. the first person to ask what OS I am using will get an instant ticket to the bottom of my respect list.
:) :) :) Best thing I saw in this forum.
    Back to your problem.
I am not technician but here just my opinion about all this. The fact is that after switching your notebook ON CPU in just few seconds reaches very high temperature. You can switch your notebook ON and just enter BIOS settings and the same should happen again.
I cannot say for sure if this is 100% thermal issue or not but what else can be responsible for switching off? CPU will be hot in few seconds only. Material change structure with temperature change and I can just imagine some contact will be interrupted.
On this forum we had many similar reports like when cold notebook starts and runs well but after short time switches off for no reason. Maybe I am wrong but for me it sounds like thermal or bad contacts issue. Lets see what other people have to say about it.

  • G4 MDD FW800 starts up and shuts down after several seconds

    Hi all,
My G4 MDD FW800 DP.1,48 starts up and shuts down after about 20 seconds. I Have reset PMU and checked battery voltage, witch was OK. (also had it out for 30 minutes with no power connected etc.) I have video and also tried with NOTHING connected. But still it just powers down and failes to enter start up procedure.
Last time I had it running I pulled my iPod, beacause the computer did't see it, the next thing I saw on screen was the message to hold the power button for 5 to restart, after that I got the problem described above.
    Anybody?
    Thanks,

  • Starting up and shuts down after 30 seconds

My powerbook started doing this. It's starting up, you hear the chime , then the spinning thing with the gray screen, then it shuts down after about 30 seconds.
I did try a few things that I've read in different threads. I can do the single user mode and the black screen comes I can type the things from this thread but it doesn't look it works.. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1801027?threadID=1801027 . I did type those commands w/wo the "+" signs.
    Please help

The plus signs were remnant discussion formatting keys and are not part of the commands.
OK, here goes on what to do.  Boot into single user mode.  Then try the following  command
    /sbin/mount   -uw   / <enter>
which mounts the boot volume as write-enabled (it normally comes up read-only to begin with) then this command:
    /sbin/fsck   -fy   / <enter>
And let it attempt the repair of the boot volume.  It will either report that the volume is OK or that it has been repaired.  If it has been repaired, then repeat the second command until it just says things are OK.  Please post the results.
Note that usually, in single-user mode, those commands will appear as an advisory just before the first terminal prompt.

  • Hello my ps 2014 can not open it shuts down after 10-15 seconds. the old version run fine

    Hello
my ps 2014 can not open it shuts down after 10-15 seconds. the old version run fine

There are several things you can do I understand.
    1) Check the battery condition using a program like the widget iStatPro (free). If the battery health is less than 80% then Apple have a free replacement program for this.
    2) Switch the machine off and disconnect the power supply. Remove the battery and leave out for several minutes - to allow complete discharge of all electronic components, I think. Then re-instal the battery, etc and restart. I'm not 100% clear on all steps in this procedure but it provides a reset which sometimes resolves problems at least temporarily.
    3) Disconnect all peripherals and see how it works. One of these might be calling for more power than it should.

  • My hp dv6700 shuts down after 1 second. i recently upgraded the processor to intel t7500.

I recently tried to upgrade the processor of my HP dv6700. I upgraded to an Intel T7500 and after reassembling the laptop and trying to power it up, the laptop shuts down after 1 second. The computer turns on, the fan makes a brief noise, and then the machine shuts down. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hey, did you apply thermal paste to the new CPU? It may be shutting down because none of the heat it getting blown out by the fan. The thermal paste is a conductor of heat to allow it to be transferred to the copper which will get blown out of the laptop by the fan.
I also have a DV6700. May I ask how a motherboard melts down? I have had absolutely no problems with my laptop, and I've had it for 5-6 years.

My new 6th generation ipod nano keeps shutting down after 30 seconds. It has been registered with itunes and has about 200+ songs on it. I have not tried to reset it because i was not sure what this would do. Please help!

This is usually a sign that your headphones are not plugged all the way in.  Make sure you cannot see any silver still showing from the headphone's plug.  It may require a little extra force to get the headphones to become fully inserted.  You should hear a sort of clicking noise indicating that they have been fully seated.
Also check the headphone port from a damage or debris.
