Shut down after low battery warning

Hi
After I get the low battery warning on my iBook G4 (about 30 seconds) my iBook unexpectedly shuts down, I have tried recalibrating the battery several times, including shutting the lid to put it to sleep after the warning then plugging it in and waking it (to recalibrate you are supposed to wait until the machine sleeps) and letting it charge right up.
I have also tried resetting the PMU, although I dont think this is working as I hit shift-ctrl-apple/option-and the power button, and all that happens is the machine starts up as usual, according to the documentation, I should have to then power up the machine.
Is itr just that my battery hasd had it? I have notice it only takes an hour/hour and a half to run the battery down, and only about 30mins or so to charge.
Thanks for any help in advance.
Mike

That definitely sounds like a battery that wants to be replaced.
My iBook behaved in a similar manner--except the "low battery" warning wouldn't even show up!
I think it's time for you to pick up a new battery--they run about $100.

  • MacBook shuts down after low battery warning

    Hi,
up until recently my macbook's battery has been working just fine. but then lately i noticed that a few minutes after it displays the low battery warning it shuts down by itself.
before, when the low battery warning would display i could still continue working on my macbook for several minutes until it goes to sleep -- only then would i connect it to the power cord.
unlike the other posts (concerning batteries) that i've read, i have no problems turning my macbook on/off before or after this event has occured. neither does it shut itself down when the battery is halfway. my problem really only happens after the low battery warning has been displayed.
i wanted to calibrate my battery but then that would require my macbook to go to sleep once it reaches a battery level of less than 5%-10% -- mine just shuts down completely.
is this shutting down thing a substitution mechanism to save the laptop's memory -- instead of going to sleep, it'd just shut down?? how can i fix this?
thanks in advance for the help.
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   512MB, 2GHz Intel Core Duo

For what it is worth, I now have the same issue. Only I don't even see the low battery warning, it gets to 15% or 10% and bang, no power. This is not good, by the way and is bound to corrupt something in the system as OSX requires some house keeping when you shut down the computer properly. This instant off is not a proper shut down. I took my MacBook in and they wouldnt simply replace the battery, they want to keep the computer and give it back to me in a few days. I rely on this puter for work 5 days a week, so I was trying to avoid this.
Oh well I guess a trip to the Apple store is unavoidable.

  • 2009 MacBook Pro shuts off after low battery warning.

Today I got the warning at 10% and about a minute later, the computer just zapped off. I only had internet (Facebook and email) and iTunes open. This has happened before, more often recently, where it shuts off shortly after the warning. I've been wondering if I have a bad battery because sometimes the computer has drained all the way to 0% and then zaps off.
Is this fixable with the current battery? Or is it just old and likely needs replacement?
    Any input is appreciated. Thanks!!

Apple actually has a section of their website dedicated to explaining how recharge-able batteries work these days.  It includes some tips on how to maximize your battery life.

  • Macbook no longer "sleeps" after 'low battery' warning, just suddenly dies

My macbook (just over a year old) used to give me a warning with 10 minutes left that it would sleep so as my data was not lost, if I didn't plug it in. However, recently, it has stopped doing this - instead of sleeping, if I don't get to a power source in time within 10 minutes, it simply cuts out, with the sound of the hard drive stopping - like if you shut down a frozen macbook with the power button.
This is REALLY irritating - what's going on? Why does it not sleep anymore, and is there any way to fix it?
I'm on Tiger 10.4.11, with an intel macbook...

Same Problem here. Tried several calibrations, smc and pram zap (well i guess there is no pram any longer so it zaps something else). Now I found another post where they talk about the battry 1.2 update. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1449128&tstart=60
I remember when trying to do an battery update to 1.3 manually the update told me that it is not for my macbook. But - I found the 1.3 update Bundle in /System/Library/Configuration/BatteryUpdater.bundle
    1. I Removed /System/Library/Configuration/BatteryUpdater.bundle from my system
    2. rebooted
    3. Emptied trash
    4. Installed update 1.2 by Softwarupdate.
I will now do an SMC reset an then let the battery run low and watch what happens.
    Then do a calibration.
I have the problem here in different ways. Sometimes Macbook shuts down suddenly after low battery warning, sometimes it sleep, almost never it hibernates.

  • Macbook shuts down on low battery

    Hi!
My macbook powers off on low battery several minutes after low-battery alert. So nothing gets saved if macbook was left without power for a long period of time.
About first 3 month when it was new it went to sleep on low battery. But what happened now and how can I fix such a behaviour?

I believe I have found the problem...
If your battery is 0102 or 0102a firmware (check in System Profiler), then I believe it is the culprit; I have been through 4 batteries, and the only two that worked were 0110 firmware.
Another thing....if you have Secure Virtual Memory on, turn it off. I've noticed that Safe Sleep on low-battery doesn't seem to function if SVM is turned on; however, if I have SVM off and a battery with firmware 0110, it works dandy every time. I've tried SVM both OFF and with it ON with a firmware 0102 battery, and it still gives the same result--shuts down instead of hibernates.
I don't know if that will fix it for everyone, but it certainly fixed it for my last-gen Blackbook! (knock on wood)

  • M70 freezes when connecting AC Adapter after low battery warning

When I get the low battery warning, I connect the AC adapter but when I switch the power on, the laptop screen goes blank. The DC in LED lights up, the Power LED stays on and the Battery LED comes on but I cannot use any keys on the keyboard, the laptop has frozen. Any ideas?

Does this happen when you connect the small plug directly to your laptop or the mains plug?
I noticed similar problems (usually shutdown) when connecting/disconnecting the mains plug. This does not occur when the power adaptor is plugged in and I plug the power connector at the laptop in/out. I guess there is a problem with the transient behaviour of the power adaptor & the power detection in the laptop.
This applies to Satellite M60. I recall no similar issues with an older Sat 3000.

  • TS4002 iPad shut down duet low battery after recharge email is now missing, any way to retrieve it?

I was in the middle of composing or replying to an important email, gmail, battery shut down and now I cannot retreive the very lengthy important email. I have tried contacting google and troubleshooting by looking in archives, deleted spam, all mail etc, 'sent' also, in case it maybe sent through a default, but not there either, archive either!  Please help!

You can save any mail you want to keep on your mac, by dragging it to the 'On My Mac' Filder in Mail.
You can then delete anything left in iCloud you don't want.
If you want to use an alternate service for mail to iCloud, you need to set it up at system preferences > Internet accounts.

  • Macbook shuts down when low battery instead of going to sleep

    Hi
Well basically my laptop shuts itself down instead of going to sleep when my battery gets low. I also do not get the low battery message. My macbook will usually shut down when it gets to approximately 6% of battery life. What should I do?
    Thanks
    Sarah.

Have you done the battery update? You might also try to reset the SMC and/or PRAM.
If it doesn't work you may need a new battery. The original core duo batteries have had an extra year added to their warranty so even if your computer is not covered the battery is. My MacBook was doing the same thing except at 28%. Apple replaced my battery and it works fine now.
If you call Apple be polite but firm some people have had trouble from some of the reps. Mine went smoothly I had a new battery in 3 days.

  • Macbook - Shuts down with low battery and doesn't go to sleep

I have a Black MacBook 2.16 core duo and have been dealing with this same issue for about 6 months.
At first, the MB (macbook) worked perfectly. battery would get to 5% or so, warn me then go to sleep, then write a safe sleep image, then shutdown. I would turn it back on and it would restore the image to where I left off.
After about 2 months this stopped working properly. When running solely off the battery, the MB would get to about 20% and just shutdown. ppbbbbllltt!
I've spent endless hours on the phone with people in the Phillipines and sitting at Genius Bars. I've gone through all the things mentioned in Apple's support thread: calibrated the battery, reset PRAM, reset SMC / PMU, updated the battery uupdater to 1.1 then 1.2 (I think that 1.3 is only for MB Pros)
I'm on my THIRD BATTERY..it's happening again...at least with the first 2 it worked for a couple of months. With this battery, it bombed out on the first cycle that I went through.
Is this the logic board or the motherboard or something else??
Any other ideas on what to try?
Is this a hardware issue (IE motherboard, logic board...) ?
Is this a software issue (IE - OSX) ?
Is it a firware issue (IE - battery firware) ?
    I'm at a loss....

If it's your third battery you need to have Apple look at the computer itself. As you know now switching batteries is not fixing it. I would guess it is in the power control circuit which is on the motherboard. You need to call and get it checked out.

  • No low battery warning and shut down

My MacBook is no longer showing the "low battery" warning and even with the batery status showing charge suddenly shuts down. If I check manually pressing the button of the bettery flashes 2 or 3 lights.
I have calibrated the battery several times but i am having problems doing it again because after the shut down there is still charge in the battery.
I have OS X 10.5.8 and all the software updates done.
    Thanks.

  • HT1446 No low battery warning before it shuts-down

Under MAvericks OS-X, our MBP isn't giving a low battery warning before it shuts-down. And yes the battery status icon is active in the status bar..  So why no warning??

Read this earlier non-Mavericks discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11218017#11218017

  • MBP shuts down after sleep when 2% battery left

Sorry guys if u find it irritating to see the similar question again n again but i couldnt stop myself from asking this...
i have my mbp just 3 weeks old and i tried to callibrate the battery just few hrs ago...i continuously used my mbp until the battery level reached to 2% (the warning message showed when it was 6%)...just then i had to received a phone call. When i was busy talking, i noticed that the mbp has gone to sleep mode...but when i returned (2-3 mins later), i found it shut down...
well, i think it should have remained to sleep mode but it didnt...then after an hour i connected the power cord and switched on and noticed a progress bar which i saw for the first time....i have been charging it for 40-50 mins, now...
also the health of my battery keeps fluctuating between 95-100 %...istat shows this...is this normal???
So what i want to know is, Is this normal for mbp to shut down when the battery reach that low?? OR there is some problem in my MBP???
if there is should i be going to my mbp reseller shop for service or it is something i can handle myself????
    thanks in advance..

then how am i supposed to callibrate if it shuts down before completely draining the battery???
and what about the battery health % being fluctuating? my battery have completed only 9 cycles and the health shown at the moment is 97%

  • Pavillion dv5 shuts down after ~5-10min on battery power?

11mo old laptop simply shuts down when running on battery power after only 5-10min after unplugging.
    - Battery gauge shows fully-chaged when I unplug it
    - No "low battery" warning or advice to plug in is given; it simply shuts off
If I try to turn it back on after it shuts down it will not power back on unless I plug the laptop back into the charger.
This never happens when plugged in to charger.
I know battery life can diminsh over time, but this came on all of a sudden; battery life was good (several hours) up until very recently. Now it just shuts down after a few minutes.
Appreciate any thoughts or advice - Thanks!

Laptop batteries can and do suddenly go bad. If one or two cells die, they can actually leach power from the other cells. The Smart chip inside the battery can actually go bad and shut the battery down even if the cells have power. The warranty on the battery is (usually) one year and if yours is 11 months old you can likely get HP to ship a new battery to you without returning the whole machine to them.

  • Low Battery Warning and Screen Shut Off

A couple of months ago I stopped receiving the Low Battery/Reserve Power/Connect to AC warning. The computer would just shut down then. This is probably explained by my battery being on a 350 cycle count.
However, a new problem has arisen which I am not sure if it would be connected to the same issue. When running basic software (firefox, excel, etc) the computer works fine, but as soon as I attempt to run something more complex (Google Earth, iPhoto, sometimes iTunes) the screen goes black and becomes unresponsive. This happens whether I'm connected to AC Power or not. When I close the computer, the LED light at the front comes on steadily (not pulsating). I don't think the computer shuts down as the battery seems to continue to run down. The only thing I have been able to do is shut the computer down by holding the power button down.
I have tried taking out the battery and holding the power button for 10 seconds/tone as well as holding the power button (with the battery in) for 5 seconds/tone.
While I am fairly sure I'll need to get a new battery, I'm not sure if that will solve the second problem as well. Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

I'm going out on a limb here....
First, have you run Disk Utility to fix permissions, etc?
Secondly, do you only have issues when you run CPU intensive applications? If so, there are two things I can think of off hand. 1 is that maybe your CPU heatsink is coming loose. The other is, I seem to recall reading somewhere that if the CPU is pulling pretty close to 100%, it may pull extra power from the battery... maybe your battery being so low can not supply the needed power? Again.. this is just out in a limb, I don't know this to be fact.
